On tonight’s Travelin’ Music, Justin Bieber … NOT!

When I heard that some unknown jazz newcomer had beaten out the hyperpopular Justin Bieber as Best New Artist at the Grammys last weekend, I was intrigued.

When I learned that the artist in question, Esperanza Spalding, played a stand-up bass — my favorite jazz instrument — and also sang — I love female vocalists — well, it wasn’t hard to pick this week’s kickoff tune for Travelin’ Music.

Here is Miss Spalding performing in a recent tribute to Stevie Wonder at the White House. (I don’t believe I’ve ever featured Stevie, which is a terrible injustice to the man that I’ll have to correct soon.)

Jay, it was getting ugly downstairs!

Just kidding, but that godless heathen was talking sedition in regards to no music! (And I dutifully joined in!)

Nice, nice selection.

Back in the day, Stevie, along with Sir Paul and TR, was one of a tiny handful who could play all of the instruments on any given record.

A true genius and an American treasure.

I foresee many good things ahead for Ms. Spalding…

Just one of many Stevie Wonder favorites…

Oh yes, the Israeli’s could sink them both via submarine or air in about 5 minutes.

I think it’s just the issue of Egypt allowing them access to Israel via the Med.

They could always go around the tip of Africa and in through Gibraltar but they would probably be lost at sea before then.

Iranian Navy sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Where everything was exactly how it seemed
Where there never any mystery on who shot john f kennedy
It was just a man with something to prove
Slightly bored and severely confused
He steadied his rifle with his target in the center
And became famous on that day in november

Dont wake me i plan on sleeping in

And then last night i had that strange dream
Where everything was exactly how it seemed
Where concerns about the world getting warmer
The people thought they were just being rewarded
For treating others as they like to be treated
For obeying stop signs and curing diseases
For mailing letters with the address of the sender
Now we can swim any day in november

When they ask, “Can I talk to you about God?” Reply, “Sure, what would you like to know?”

Answer the door with a bloody knife and say, “I’m sorry, could you come back in a half hour? We’re not done with the virgin yet.”

Answer the door with an automatic weapon and say ‘Allah be Praised!

Ask them for their address. When they ask why you want it, claim that you want to appear on their doorstop univited so that you can peddle your own beliefs.

Look smug and tell them that your God can beat up their God.

Tell them you already have your own religion. When they ask what it is, wince a little before confessing, “er, I’m not sure if it’s legal in this country

A chalk outline of a human body on the pavement, and a few copies of “The Watchtower” scattered around…

Answer every one of their questions with “What do you mean by that?” This might take a while, but you and your loved ones can have fun placing bets on how long it takes for them to leave.

Ask them to explain the story of Elisha and the Forty-two children.

Invite them in to see your fine collection of dinosaur fossils.

the same thing happen in 2012. Voters won’t put up with extremism. The Democrats learned that in 2010, and the Republicans will re-learn it in 2012.

Something for the powers-that-be in WI to ponder: what happened when Mubarek ordered the military to crush the protests–

Last night [Feb 10], a military officer guarding the tens of thousands celebrating in Cairo threw down his rifle and joined the demonstrators, yet another sign of the ordinary Egyptian soldier’s growing sympathy for the democracy demonstrators. We had witnessed many similar sentiments from the army over the past two weeks. But the critical moment came on the evening of 30 January when, it is now clear, Mubarak ordered the Egyptian Third Army to crush the demonstrators in Tahrir Square with their tanks after flying F-16 fighter bombers at low level over the protesters.

Many of the senior tank commanders could be seen tearing off their headsets – over which they had received the fatal orders – to use their mobile phones. They were, it now transpires, calling their own military families for advice. Fathers who had spent their lives serving the Egyptian army told their sons to disobey, that they must never kill their own people.

Thus when General Hassan al-Rawani told the massive crowds yesterday evening that “everything you want will be realised – all your demands will be met”, the people cried back: “The army and the people stand together – the army and the people are united. The army and the people belong to one hand.”

I hate to tell you this but while their “brothers” were dying overseas, unions went on strike “DURING” World War Two for higher wages, etc.

Dispicable.

Firstly, he hates to say it? I call BS.He LOVES to say it. The fact is that he is a non-stop basher of all union men and women.

And that is not even the biggest misrepresentation.

Nearly all the unions that belonged to the CIO were fully supportive of both the war effort and of the Roosevelt administration. The CIO, in particular the United Auto Workers (UAW), supported a wartime no-strike pledge that aimed to eliminate not only major strikes for new contracts, but also the innumerable small strikes called by shop stewards and local union leadership to protest particular grievances.

The CIO did not, on the other hand, strike over wages during the war. In return for labor’s no-strike pledge, the government offered arbitration to determine the wages and other terms of new contracts. Those procedures produced modest wage increases during the first few years of the war but not enough to keep up with inflation, particularly when combined with the slowness of the arbitration machinery.

Even though the complaints from union members about the no-strike pledge became louder and more bitter, the CIO did not abandon it. The Mine Workers, by contrast, who did not belong to either the AFL or the CIO for much of the war, engaged in a successful twelve-day strike in 1943.

Maybe our paragon of truth can provide some damning details.

So who and what is dispicable here? (And for gawd sakes buy a friggin dictionary!”)

More like Dipsh*table.

@ 9:43 — That’s why I’m asking. Those two things will go a long way towards breaking up the union. I don’t argue that. However, Gov Walker is claiming his bill is necessary to balance their budget. They (Democrats) don’t have the numbers to do anything besides watch those things get signed into law. Gov. Walker and the legislators have not denied that they intend to strip the unions of much of their power. Those extraneous things do exactly that. Walker has also said that the bill was needed to balance the budget.

My only thing is that if I were affected, I just want honesty. If you’re gonna take me out, then just say so. Don’t try to deceive me of your true intentions. Be a man and own up to your actions.

As I said yesterday, if Walker wanted true concessions from the union, all he has to do is offer them the same deal that fed unions have. My pension is tied to Social Security and my 401k equivalent. I pay about 40% of my medical costs, which is much higer than what Walker is asking for. My 401k equivalent has a match up to 5%, but it’s not dollar for dollar for the entire 5. I pay most of the cost for my supplimental insurance too (life, short & long term disability). If he put that on the table, I think it’s hard to counter as those numbers are already in effect for public unions, and the fed gov’t isn’t staring down the barrel at pension problems from fed workers anymore.

In a rare early morning weekend vote, the House approved an aggressive plan Saturday to eliminate dozens of federal programs and offices while slashing agency budgets by as much as 40 percent, drawing out more than $60 billion in deficit savings.

Setting up a showdown early next month with President Obama and Senate Democrats, House Republicans pushed the legislation through after a marathon debate capped off by an all-night session Friday that spilled into Saturday morning. During the bleary-eyed final roll call at 4:35 a.m., 235 Republicans were joined by no Democrats in support of dramatic spending reductions that they said were needed to address a soaring annual deficit of $1.6 trillion; 189 Democrats — as well as three Republicans — opposed it, accusing Republicans of writing the bill with a “double meat ax.”

The three Republicans voting against the measure were Reps. Jeff Flake (Ariz.), Walter Jones (N.C.) and John Campbell (Calif.).

Have the cut-n-run Wisconsin Democrats been found yet? Buncha children. Hey Dems: the people voted. You lost. Now get over it and sit in the back! Note the liberal media is not upset at regressive liberal Democrats shutting down government (that only happens when Cons attempt to do it). The Gov should fire all the teachers ala Reagan. But he won’t do it. $90k in wages and benefits sounds well above “fair” to me for a teacher, especially considering that’s about 50% above the national average for a state government service employee. Anyone seen the DNC media put it that way? Get your kids out of public schools and put them in private schools. Rapidly. Better yet, just move the hell out of the state. Show them who the REAL boss is with a for sale sign in the yard…

…Like they’ve been doing in Chicago. Can we say The Community Organizer is needed again?

“CHICAGO—A larger-than-expected exodus over the past 10 years reduced the population of Chicago to a level not seen in nearly a century. The U.S. Census Bureau reported Tuesday that during the decade ended in 2010, Chicago’s population fell 6.9% to 2,695,598 people, fewer than the 2.7 million reported back in 1920.”

Another Gov makes a wise choice, this time over that farce of high speed rail that liberals for whatever reason like to deep throat:

“Gov. Rick Scott, citing concerns over potential cost overruns, rejected $2.4 billion in federal dollars to pay for construction of a high-speed rail line connecting Tampa and Orlando.”

Yaaaay! The first fight against scaremongering UN Global Walarminsts. Thanks Republicans!

“The Defund IPCC ‘amendment was sponsored by Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Missouri), who read aloud on the floor from the 2009 U.S. Senate Report of more than 700 dissenting scientists! (Written by Climate Depot’s Morano) — Luetkemeyer: Americans ’should not have to continue to foot the bill for an (IPPC) organization to keep producing corrupt findings’”

Maybe Jimmy Carter is just trying to remind us that he’s as clueless and incompetent now regarding the Middle East as he was in 1978, among other things……is he still whining about Fox News?

“Carter says Egyptian military likely to obey will of people”

And then you have to love this meltdown of a Dallas County Commissioner – one can only imagine the uproar had the races been reversed…….Democrat, naturally…

“DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Tuesday’s Dallas County Commissioner’s Court meeting erupted into an argument between Commissioner John Wiley Price and a citizen, ending with Price repeatedly telling several citizens to ‘go to hell.’…..As Price stood to leave, he looked at Turner and the five other citizens who addressed the court. Price said to them, “All of you are white. Go to hell!”

And Terence Jeffrey has a way to put Obama’s budget and government spending in general into perspective….

“Anyone who doubts that the trend toward socialism is pushing America toward ruin should examine the historical tables President Obama published Monday along with his $3.7 trillion budget.
In fiscal 2011, according to these tables, the Department of Health and Human Services will spend $909.7 billion. In fiscal 1965, the entire federal government spent $118.228 billion. What about inflation? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ inflation calculator, $118.228 billion in 1965 dollars equals $822.6 billion in 2010 dollars. In real terms, the $909.7 billion HHS is spending this year is about $87.1 billion more than the entire federal government spent in 1965.”

The great unwashed masses think government is the answer to everything. Maybe others are right: Costa Rica is starting to sound damn good. We’ll know for sure which way the nation is headed permanently after 2012.

Though I’m not 031, nor does the topic hold much interest for me, I (just because it’s AmVet) thought I’d offer some assistance.

schnirt

Lunch break’s over but some quick research found these little details:

Jerome Scott and George Homans of Harvard University studied wildcat strikes during WWII.

During the forty-four months from Pearl Harbor to V-J Day, there were 14,471 strikes involving 6,774,000 strikers: more than during any period of comparable length in United States history.29 In 1944 alone, 369,000 steel and iron workers, 389,000 auto workers, 363,000 other transportation equipment workers, and 278,000 miners were involved in strikes.30 In many cases, the “quickie” tactics were extremely effective in improving working conditions and easing the burden of company discipline. Workers virtually made extra holidays for themselves around Christmas and New Year’s, holding illicit plant parties and cutting production to a trickle. Workers often created free time for themselves on the job by other means. On one occasion, workers in an aircraft plant staged a necktie-cutting party in the middle of working hours, roaming through the plant snipping off ties of fellow workers, supervisors, and managers. The wildcat tradition and organization gave workers a direct counter-power over such management decisions as the speed of work, number of workers per task, assignment of foremen, and organization of work While the effects are impossible to measure, industry representatives claimed a decrease of “labor efficiency” of 20 to 50 percent during the war period.”

In many cases, the strikes were directed against decisions of the War Labor Board. For example, in October 1943, the union representing workers at the National Malleable and Steel Castings Company in Cleveland requested a wage increase from the board. After nine months, the board granted an increase of only two and one-half cents an hour; in late July, 1,100 workers struck against the decision. Similarly, maintenance workers in twenty Detroit-area auto plants struck in October 1944, idling 50,000, when their request for an eleven-cent increase in hourly wages sat before the board for nine months without action.

Indeed, most union leaders would have preferred to avoid the strikes of 1946 altogether. They led them only because the rank and file were determined to strike anyway, and only by leading the strikes could the unions retain control of them. In a widely cited Collier’s article, business analyst Peter F. Drucker pointed out that in the major strikes of 1945 and 1946, “it was on the whole not the leadership which forced the workers into a strike but worker pressure that forced a strike upon the reluctant leadership; most of the leaders knew very well that they could have gained as much by negotiations as they finally gained by striking. And again and again the rank and file of the union membership refused to go back to work.

Why “Grand Bargains” always suck.

Villagers love the idea of a couple octogenarian senators – one conservative Republican, one conservative Democrat – hashing things out in some back room in the middle of the night, forging some “compromise” which can be quickly rushed through Congress without anyone having to put their fingerprints on it. They believe there are “tough choices” which involve additional misery for the most desperate and vulnerable, and that the voters can’t be trusted to support those choices. So we must have the grand bargain, the compromise blessed by everyone who matters without worrying the beautiful minds of voters.

He crumpled up his prepared remarks and threw them on the floor. He told them, “Here’s the deal: I understand you’re angry, and I understand you’re frustrated, and I understand you feel deceived and betrayed.” And, he said, they were right: “For 20 years, governors have come into this room and lied to you, promised you benefits that they had no way of paying for, making promises they knew they couldn’t keep, and just hoping that they wouldn’t be the man or women left holding the bag. I understand why you feel angry and betrayed and deceived by those people. Here’s what I don’t understand. Why are you booing the first guy who came in here and told you the truth?”

He told them there was no political advantage in being truthful: “The way we used to think about politics and, unfortunately, the way I fear they’re thinking about politics still in Washington” involves “the old playbook [which] says, ‘lie, deceive, obfuscate and make it to the next election.’” He’d seen a study that said New Jersey’s pensions may go bankrupt by 2020. A friend told him not to worry, he won’t be governor then. “That’s the way politics has been practiced in our country for too long. . . . So I said to those firefighters, ‘You may hate me now, but 15 years from now, when you have a pension to collect because of what I did, you’ll be looking for my address on the Internet so you can send me a thank-you note.’”–Peggy Noonan

http://www.ajc.com/news/nation-world/states-ignored-warnings-on-845625.html

States ignored warnings on unemployment insurance

WASHINGTON — State officials had plenty of warning. Over the past three decades, two national commissions and a series of government audits sounded alarms about the dwindling amount of money states were setting aside to pay unemployment insurance to laid-off workers.

[...]

In Georgia, lawmakers gave employers a four-year tax holiday from 1999-2003. Employers saved more than $1 billion, but trust fund reserves fell about 40 percent, to $700 million. The state gradually has raised its unemployment insurance taxes since then, but not nearly enough to restore the trust fund to previous levels. The state began borrowing in December 2009. Now it owes Washington about $588 million.

Republican Mark Butler, Georgia’s labor commissioner, said his state had one of the lowest unemployment insurance tax rates in the nation when the tax holiday was enacted.

“The decision to do this was not really based upon any practical reason. It was based on a political decision, which I think, by all accounts now, we can look back on and say it was the wrong decision,” Butler said. “Now we find ourselves in a situation where we’ve had to borrow money and that puts everyone in a tight situation.”

I’m not sure about the demise, but wreck definitely. That is exactly what it did take in 1929 and the ensuing depression to enact safeguards and regulations protecting us from the “free market” predators and it took 70 years to forget what happened back then and roll back those regulations. Until we feel the pain that our grandparents felt, we are destined to believe that financial institutions can self regulate or act in the best interest of the country.

I think we’re going to get a taste of that over the next 2-4 years. Imagine what will happen to our bond rating if it even appears that we won’t be able to meet our debt obligations. People are talking about Wisconsin, but the governor of Alabama pulled the same thing on the teachers right after the elections in November with barely a whisper outside the state’s boundaries. Look at how many states have GOP dominated and majority governments.

I’m not going to say it’s all the GOP’s fault. However, I do forsee a grand experiment in supply side economics, fair tax, and everything they’ve preached over the past 30 years. Some of the younger politicians have heard nothing but that rhetoric over their lifetimes, so while the older GOPers say it but don’t mean it, the young ones believe in it like Scout believes in the Bible.

I just hope they’re right, and we don’t wreck this country beyond repair. The realist in me, however, knows most of that stuff is campaign rhetoric.

I’m not sure about those two particular banks but some of the banks have been taken over and are operating under the same names and others were completely closed and taken over by out of state banks. I wasn’t speaking of chain banks like SunTrust, etc. They are still around. I prefer to deal with locally owned banks, rather than chain banks, but I can’t find one now, since all the ones anywhere near me went under.

A lot of the natives are pretty restless up here about some of things that went on in the banks. I’d like to see a few people swinging from the yardarm but I understand that’s not legal in modern society. ;-)

Cut is ok. I agree that we need to cut back on government spending. The method of doing it is where I see the problem. We have an economy that is slowly recovering from near total collapse. With an economy that’s based on spending, if the government cuts too much too fast, who’s going to pick up the slack in spending? Do you expect businesses and corporations to suddenly start hiring, spending and expanding like crazy? I don’t. There’s not enough people employed to pick up the slack either. Anything that’s done has to be done methodically and strategically.

Officers stopped the vehicle and reported the driver refused to cooperate. After a brief struggle, Ralph was arrested.

Does it not bother anyone that a sitting president of the US would help foment political disruption in one of the State’s (Wisconsin) of the American Union by supplying operatives out of the Whitehouse and the DNC to further his unionists/socialist beliefs? And he only does this because the unions have given him 10’s of millions of their members hard-earned dollars for his campaigns. I am now convinced that Obama is a hard-core socialist and proto-communist with fascist leanings. He certainly is willing to enact fascists tactics to further his cause.

The thing that bothers me most is, for the life of me I can not understand the blindness that seems to be indemnic of the Obama zombies. He displays every quality of fascist/progressive dictator but yet his liberal followers choose to ignore this and continue to march on towards the inevetible and perhaps pre-ordained end of this counry. It is little wonder that Hitler and so many other ruthless dictators were so successful. It seems that an ever increasing number of members of the “public” worldwide want to be led around by a ring in their nose and that ring is made up of promises that their governments will take care of them no matter the cost to their own freedoms. What a bunch of idiots. The time of reckoning is about be upon us and I don’t say that with any religious inference. And oh will there be squealing when the people suddenly realize that their progressive government “saviours” have lied and things are not going to be OK. Just keep an eye on world food and energy prices in the next 10-12 months and you will see where we are about to be; hungry and scared with no saviour but the increased servitude to China through more and more borrowing to cover the interest on our debt. And that is your opinion as you see it. However, how do you know that’s exactly what he means?

From your statement you just said, I could infer that you have zero respect for Gov. Walker. I know you like and appreciate what he’s doing, and you have no problem with it. However, I think he’s being less than truthful trying to use the budget deficit excuse to try to decimate public unions in WI. When he says that the bill needs to pass to ensure a balanced budget, is it not possible to balance a budget without wiping the unions off the face of the planet? Did those unions not exist when the state previously had balanced budgets?

I personally agree with your statement about no respect for people who don’t try to tell the truth. That’s why I don’t respect Walker. If he had came out and said, “I will bust up the unions so no future governor has to debate contracts with them in the future. After that, I will balance our budget for this coming cycle”, I’d have nothing but respect for him for being honest about his intentions. However, to just say the bill needs to pass, without revealing his true intentions, he’s lower than a rattlesnake’s belly to me.

Now that it’s gotten blown out for all to see, no, it’s not a secret. However, the governor of Alabama did the same thing right after the elections, and there was not a peep from either side. If his PRIMARY goal is to balance the budget, why is he adamant about not meeting with union reps? What if the unions caved to every fiscal demand he asked for to balance the budget? Would that not meet his primary goal without destroying the organizations that he and others despise so much? Unions are just as much a business as Exxon or Apple Computers or any other large business. They have their executives and these people want to live large. If Obama is so serious about unions, why doesn’t he insist that Apple computers and GE turbine and electrical components be manufactured by union labor in the US instead of in Indonesia or China or wherever they are built? The right to assemble is the right to meet in more than a group of one, Adam. It was placed in the Constitution so that the government would not interfere in a group or groups wanting to get together in opposition to a government policy. There is NO other right to assemble.

Freedom of assembly and freedom of association may be used to distinguish between the freedom to assemble in public places and the freedom of joining an association. Freedom of assembly is often used in the context of the right to protest, while freedom of association is used in the context of labor rights and the right to collective bargaining, for example by joining a trade union. Freedom of assembly, as guaranteed in the Canadian Constitution and the Constitution of the United States, is interpreted to mean both the freedom to assemble and the freedom to join an association.

That is from our constitution, so what the Wisconsin Governor , along with all these other Repub governors are wanting to do , is unconstitutional. End of story.

How about that you can’t be forced to join a union if you don’t want to and still perform the work? Would THAT be Constitutional, leg-humper?

How about re-certifying the union every year? That requires a mutual respect for the law from everyone, or even most people. Traditional mob rule hasn’t happened in a while, but instead it can be said that mob rule is being replaced by more of a mob mentality, where the polarized sides make consistent and calculated efforts to change the laws to be what they want, in an effort to force everyone else into de facto agreement.

This thing you keep saying about you using facts and me not using facts is simply not true. I have used facts, and you have often used them poorly (for example, to make an unrelated point or a conclusion that cannot reasonably be drawn from said facts). Not that I’ll say I have never done the same but you do it so OFTEN that I have to wonder what’s going on in that brain of yours. You also do plenty of emotional argument and belief yourself. It’s not WRONG to do that. However, it is incorrect to assume that when I disagree with you it is ONLY based on belief or emotion. Sure, I get passionate, but when I feel I HAVE to, I do back up my statements with facts.

You have a really funny way of talking about facts though. You call CNN a biased source, basically, but only in the sense that it supports an argument that is counter to yours. You still, as you say, watch CNN to get part of your news and you don’t immediately believe it. But your indication at first was that because I got my facts from CNN, and the argument was counter to yours, then it must be wrong. And that’s a BIG problem in a serious debate. You also seem to believe only your facts matter, and that they always prove the point you’re trying to make. You are wrong 100% on the former, and usually wrong on the latter.

I’m not sure why, but you often draw conclusions from things that don’t support your conclusion. I suppose it’s possible that all you do is go later to find some data that appears to back you up after a cursory examination, and then post it without really making sure it backs you up first.

I don’t have a problem with a well made argument borne of facts and beliefs at all, but you really are applying a double standard here to prop yourself up.

Funerals! Discretion prohibits telling just whose it was, but in my collection of great tales from the South is one told by one of the participants. She says there they were at the funeral and one of the relatives “come back from Detroit” went to wailing, “oh, Mama, you’re gone and we won’t see you again in this life.” She says before she could stop herself (or any of her folks!) she jumped up and yelled at her sister, “not that you ever saw her here, Miss ‘You Take Care of Her,” and you might want to take a good look at her in the coffin, ’cause you won’t be seeing her in the afterlife either where you’re goin’” Broke down into a fracas “right there in the church” :-)

As to funerals, most of the ones I attend are at Lutheran Churches. And Lutherans love to eat! You can’t have a funeral or a memorial service without a reception afterwards. So you balance a plate of cookies cake, candy and a paper cup of ice tea, while holding a “program” and hanging on to your pocketbook and chatting solemnly with the bereaved in a suitable manner. The flowers are beautiful but not plentiful. Everybody gives to a “memorial”. No more caskets. Just a little box of ashes. It just isn’t quite the same as the old ways.. But I admit, sometimes I still cry.

Not for me. I want one of them old time funerals that lasts for hours, lots of music, 2 or 3 preachers and the walk by at the end, then take me out and plant me in the churchyard, with a real tombstone. No perpetual care stuff for me; I want somebody out there pulling weeds and cutting grass. I want to be as a big a burden in death, as I was in life.

I did see the Appalachians show and thought it was pretty good. We got rich, poor, smart, stupid, good, lazy no-count, and all the rest, like any other place. Just show the truth is all I ask but as you say, that doesn’t usually fit the narrative they’re trying to portray.

One thing I notice about some of those shows though, all the people they usually talk to, are people who moved here from somewhere else. Of course, most natives aren’t going to get on camera and “tote tales” but still, it’s always interesting that documentary makers always seem to find people to fit whatever narrative they’re telling. And that applies to a lot of subjects besides the Appalachians.

As to Ishmael, guess I don’t feel like the UrGenesis sweep is forgotten. We just had a long Bible study at church on Genesis. In the Baptist churches I grew up in, we did our eating before the funeral. I guess everybody would’ve been famished if you’d waited ’til the funeral was over. It is fading out but used to be, when somebody died, everybody around would immediately start cooking and taking food to the funeral home (or home if that’s where the body was). There was always a room full of food with tables in the back of the funeral home and people just passed in and out as they wished.

Methodist funerals I’ve been to, they tended to do their eating afterwards. Other than that they were similar, except the service was a lot shorter and more low key.

I must say that some funeral customs are absurd. In some religions, viewing the corpse is regarded as an obligatory part. Why? For proof that the guy really did die? Then there those viewers who feel obligated to say, “He looks so natural!” What’s so natural about a dead body? The funeral service I recall most vididly was for my father-in-law a couple of decades ago. I’ll skip over the part about needing to pay the synagogue dues as a condition of the rabbi, a very prominent Atlanta, performing the service. One of the viewers even came up to me to complain that the body was missing the customary eyeglasses! Said the viewer, “He just doesn’t look natural without them.”

Curious Observer,

I think that most funeral plans are made by the family. Whatever they want. It is a goodbye service of course. So I don’t mind whatever the family desires. One funeral service I attended was held at a large beautiful and classical auditorium of a funeral home. Everything was serious and solemn, even the music. UNTIL, at the conclusion, loud New Orleans jazz filled the worship center. We could have danced right out the white columned room.. But it was what the dying man had requested and that is what we got. Fine with me. Maybe he died happier thinking about music he loved.

Taking food to a funeral has GOT to be a Southern tradition. We didn’t do it in California. A mutual friend’s Mom died coupl’a years ago. Funeral was in Sylacauga, AL. Everybody made a coupl’a dishes and headed out. Took the food to a house with a 14 ft family dining table.

A bunch of women all bickering over how the table should be arranged. I conceded to a little ol’ lady who was proud of her local standing in the community. Meats here, vegetables there….blah blah blah. Who cares?

There were murmurings of a family squabble brewing. I kept wondering why we were lingering ’cause it was a long trip back. Found out the friends wanted to hang around for the brawl. I got my hands on the car keys and told ‘em to get their asses in the car or I’d leave without ‘em.

Reading back through some mid 1800’s diaries, I think a next day funeral was more customary in our area, than what we have now. Basically, as soon as they could get a casket built and a hole dug, and the body ready (which usually took a day), they put them away. And often it was leave the funeral and head right back to work. Well, apparently ONE Democrat “profile in courage” is willing to come back into town this morning if the Governor puts collective bargaining back into the bill. However, the Senate President isn’t willing to compromise just yet.

How about this: You can have collective bargaining and ONLY collective bargaining for all aspects of your pay and benefits back, but you still have to re-certify each year and you can’t be forced to join a union of you don’t want to. And if they don’t come back, I think the Governor should withhold payment to these clowns until they do come back into town.

You should really spend some time with members of NTEU, which represents federal workers. We don’t have to re-certify every year, but you don’t have to pay dues if you don’t want to join. Even if you don’t pay dues, you’re covered under the collective bargaining agreement. That agreement covers job placement, schedules, and other minor things, but it does not cover anything related to national security. We can’t strike. We can’t call a slow down. Most of all, contrary to popular opinion, if you fu*k up, you still get fired. There are procedures in place to ensure you’re not just targeted because someone doesn’t like you.

He doesn’t have to be labeled a “profile in courage”. Why not just call him someone who wants to deal with common sense? I don’t like what the Democratic legislators did, as that sets up a precedent for others to do that instead of negotiating and debating like civilized people.

Somehow the term “compromise” has become one of the 7 words you can never say on tv. I doubt very seriously Thomas Jefferson or any other drafters of the Constitution came into Philadelphia and said, “This is what the Constitution will say. If you don’t like it, oh well.” The document is a testament to compromise as it took many who had many different ideas to come up with something that has lasted for so long. Maybe there will be a mass campaign to dejackassify (if that’s a word) all elected offices and put statesmen back to where they need to be.

Actions have consequences. If the Democrat “leadership” in the House and Senate hadn’t bulled through bill after bill the American people didn’t want, they might not have lost so many House seats, Governors and legislatures across the country last November.

I find it laughable that you paint with such a wide brush. It must really be easy to live your life. You talk as if you’ve never been wrong about anything in your God given life. Have you heard me say “You lost, we won”? I seriously doubt it.

I guess its not compromise if the ideas your party preached years ago are included in legislation, but then they’re against them. I guess it’s like the “I was for it before I was against it” disease that permeates both parties. If you don’t own up to it being one of your positions, you don’t have to clami it. Compromise doesn’t mean that everything you want gets put in the legislation. Neither party has done much for compromise, and contrary to your opinion, it goes far and beyond the last 2 years. I agree. I don’t think any legislators should get paid if they’re not doing their job. I don’t think they’ll have a problem paying their hotel bills, as I’ve never met a broke legislator in my entire life.

They shouldn’t cave to the Democrats. However, someone has to become the grown up. If we go back and forth with the “you didn’t do it, so I’m not going to do it either”, we’ll keep doing this stupid sh*t until we really screw up something serious. I don’t agree that raising taxes solves problems anymore than cutting them does.

I’d, for once, like to see effective legislation. Quit all the special legislation crap targeting one group over another. Simplify tax codes and make everyone put their ass on the line. I don’t want small government, and I don’t want big government. What I want is EFFECTIVE government.

I understand what you’re saying about them doing what they said they would do. I don’t agree with either party, or independent, legislating without input or consideration from the minority party. I’ve been the minority with little input before. That experience did not make me want to become the majority to run over everyone else though. I’m not gonna lay my opinion on that at the feet of legislators. I fault the voting public. We get what we elect, and yes, Wisconsin got what they elected. At some point, the mind of the fickle will turn, and other dipsh*ts will get elected to do their “mandate”. What elected officials fail to realize is that, they represent their districts or voters who elected them, but they also represent EVERYONE who’s affected by their legislation.

I would have preferred to see less shouting and name calling over the previous 10 years, but we can’t change the past. We can only affect the future.

In Beijing’s Wangfujing shopping district, a stone’s throw from Tiananmen Square which was the epicentre of protests in 1989, a few hundred people gathered in front of the McDonald’s restaurant that had been appointed as the place of protest.

They were comfortably outnumbered by journalists, police officers and large numbers of undercover officers, according to those present. No slogans were chanted and no placards were raised, leading one online commentator to describe the event as the “revolution that never was”.

China has just “tried” to raise taxes on Tobacco. Their dollar investments are melting like snow in Los angeles.
Their only option is what moocher statists do worldwide………….take money from the poor.
Sometimes, the poor worldwide fight back.

Egypt, New York, Wisconsin,Greece,…on China’s new policy of slave-labor tobacco farming…………..

“One thing, however, is clear: Such coercion could be explained by China’s addiction to tobacco tax revenues, at all levels of the government.

“A few years back, most of China’s rural agricultural taxes were ended. One of the few exemptions, though, is the tobacco tax,” says Stanford’s Kohrman. “County officials are keen to see tobacco grown, because it’s the only way that they — in terms of agricultural production — can finance themselves.”

That system seems unlikely to change. Here’s one other reason why: the deputy director of the State Tobacco Monopoly is Li Keming; he’s the brother of the man tipped to be China’s next premier, Li Keqiang.’

At least these guys don’t try to lie about the tobacco taxes being a public health issue.

CAIRO – CAIRO (AP) — Egyptian smokers saw prices surge Thursday by as much as 100 percent as the government slapped new taxes on tobacco products in a bid to curb smoking and raise money for public health programs in the Arab world’s most populous nation.

As part of a new law passed in May but only being implemented now, the taxes raise the price of cigarettes by as much as 40 percent, while the tobacco used in Egypt’s ubquitous water pipes, known locally as shisha, now costs twice as much.

The law is part of government efforts to curb smoking, which many Egyptians maintain is one of the few remaining affordable pleasures in a country where rising prices have sparked protests over the past few months.

In WI there are many things to be considered other than the state employees wanting job security. Wi has extremely high taxes and a very low wage scale (including the private sector) in addition home prices, utilities etc are out of sight. With most people barely getting by the state needs to address all these issues as well as reassure the state employees that they are not being targeted as being part of the problem, but by letting them know they can be part of the solution.

From Yemen, where your likely hood of being murdered by a drone is almost as much as dying of cnacer———————————-milking the poor here too. …but the poor are fighting back,

Cigarettes prices increased by YR 40 per pack, following the conclusion of the Regional Conference for Combating Cancer, last Tuesday.

Many companies and businessmen have donated to programs aimed at combating cancer. Among the donors was the Haeel Saeed group, which donated YR 50 million. Ali Mahdi Saleh, a smoker who smokes one of the brands produced by the Haeel Saeed group, said this was a small gesture, as the YR 50 million donated by the group could be recouped from consumers as a result of the new price in one day alone.

Radman al-Qubati, a smoker of the same brand said he would continue smoking cigarettes in spite of the higher price.

Meanwhile, President Saleh attended the closing ceremony of the conference, and instructed the responsible authorities to purchase new equipment which will aid the detection of cancer in its early stages, and for this equipment to be provided to all cancer clinics.

He instructed the passing of new laws imposing special taxes on cigarettes and mobile bills, with the proceeds going to cancer treatment programs.

Ahmad Hussein complained about the increase in the price of cigarettes, saying cigarette companies have been donating money for cancer treatment with the right hand, while getting their money back three-times with the left hand.

He questioned how the head of one of the biggest cigarette producers in Yemen could be the same person who heads the association for combating cancer.

“How could this association raise cases in court against tobacco companies in favor of cancer victims while being headed by the owner of a tobacco company,” asked Hussein.

Meanwhile following his meeting with the participants of the 4th conference of the Gulf Union for Combating Cancer, President Saleh called for the need to ban smoking in public places, especially in Universities and schools and on public transportation. He has also issued directives banning the use of certain pesticides and poisons, which are a danger to public health as they are also believed to cause a number of cancer related diseases.

My point to posting some of this, if you couldn’t tell, is you’re still doing the same stuff. You are telling us that you provide facts, when you sometimes don’t. You occasionbally provide data, which often doesn’t support your conclusion. And then you say stuff like the above, with no facts at all to back it up because the facts actually show the opposite in many cases. And then you deflect by saying stuff like “facts as they are, not as you wish them to be” which is an accusation essentially saying I’m distorting the facts and you never do.

“Exactly how many times did they compromise?”

Wrong question, Mick. The question you SHOULD be asking is how many times the Democrats TRIED to compromise (a lot), vs. how many times they were shut down (a lot).

As for unions, no people should not be forced to join unions. You seem to be focusing on that one point when that’s not even the part that has caused the protest. As for re-certify every year, I ask you: Why should they be FORCED to do that? Why not 2 years? or 4? Why does it have to be 1?

I’ve seen firsthand where our union has been a jobsaver for someone who was wrongfully accused, and at the same time, I’ve seen them agree that others needed to go. From my perspective, I just don’t see what’s so inherently evil about unions.

can any of you libs out there make a case why someone should be COMPELLED to join a union if they do not wish to? Or require a union to re-certify every year?

Don’t consider myself a lib, but since we’ve been debating the union thing, I’ll answer.

1) Nobody should be compelled to join a union if they do not wish to join. As md points out, there are always choices involved. If the job is in a “union shop” where membership is mandatory, just don’t take the job if you do not wish to be part of the union. I think anytime that’s done, its done by majority vote of the workers anyway.

2) Why should a union have to re-certify every year? Does the American Bar Association or the American Medical Association have to re-certify every year? Unions are a blue collar organization of people working in the same profession just as the ABA or the AMA. Unions should have to recertify every year when ALL professional organizations are required to do likewise.

I was going to save this bit for our resident concern-troll extraordinaire and all around corporate skank-ho “jm” when he returns tomorrow for another “work” day, but what the hey.

Here ’tis, another in an ongoing series: Why Alan Simpson Needs to be Kicked Repeatedly in the Balls.

This image of prosperous geezers and crones is just not accurate. The notion of an aging population well prepared to take care of itself — not only in its relatively healthy 60s and 70s, classified by sociologists as the “young old,” but throughout the “old old” 80s and 90s — is a delusion that threatens to undo 75 years of social progress that began when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935.

No generation stands to lose more from this fantasy than baby boomers, whose oldest members turn 65 this year. Because of financial losses in what will surely be known to history as the Crash of 2008, many boomers — especially older ones with less time to recover — may enter retirement in a worse financial position than their parents. According to a report by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a liberal Washington think tank, households headed by boomers between the ages of 55 and 65 lost about half of their wealth between 2004 and 2009 as a result of the real estate collapse and the shrinkage of 401(k) retirement accounts. Americans at the lower end of the socioeconomic scale were the hardest hit, because for most lower- and middle-income families, their homes were their only assets.

Furthermore, only half of working Americans — the wealthier half with employers that match contributions — even have tax-sheltered retirement accounts. The average value of these accounts, by the way, was only about $45,500 before the crash — hardly a lavish retirement nest egg for boomers expected to live beyond 85 in unprecedented numbers. In just 20 years, the over-85 population is expected to number more than 8.5 million.

The archetype of the greedy geezer is based partly on a misconception about today’s oldest Americans: the World War II generation. The frequently repeated statistic that 75% of all assets are owned by people over 65 is utterly misleading, because those assets are held in a minority of very rich hands. Nearly half of older Americans receive no income — none — from assets such as stocks and savings accounts. Of those who do, half receive less than $2,000 a year.

That was wrong on so many levels. Agreeing or disagreeing on Pentagon policy is one thing. They could have shown him some respect for putting his life on the line. That soldier didn’t make the decision to go to war, all he did was follow orders.

Rachel Maddow says Wisconsin is on track to have a budget surplus this year

There is fierce debate over the approach Walker took to address the short-term budget deficit. But there should be no debate on whether or not there is a shortfall. While not historically large, the shortfall in the current budget needed to be addressed in some fashion. Walker’s tax cuts will boost the size of the projected deficit in the next budget, but they’re not part of this problem and did not create it.

We rate Maddow’s take False.

What’s that? there could be a downside to trashing the US economy for the sake of your precious tax-cut fairy belief system? Why that’s crazy talk.

In a New York Times/CBS News poll in January, 43 percent of respondents said job creation was the most important issue for Congress; 14 percent cited reducing the federal deficit.

Michael Dimock, the associate director of research for the Pew Research Center, said its polling had found that while voters were eager to reduce the deficit, they also supported increases in spending on Social Security and Medicare and believed that tax increases would be needed to balance the budget.

“The spending-deficit issue is the trickiest issue for Republicans,” Mr. Dimock said. “It’s clear that the public is with them in principle — smaller government doing less — but it’s unclear whether they’re with them in practice.”

thanks for mentioning that Neck……………on our Presidents day…………………….

The Lincoln regime destroyed the system of federalism, or states’ rights, that was established by the founding fathers. After the war, the union was no longer voluntary, and all states, North and South, became mere appendages of Washington, DC. Lincoln illegally suspended the writ of habeas corpus and imprisoned tens of thousands of political dissenters without due process; waged total war with the bombing, plundering, and mass murder of some 50,000 of his own citizens; signed ten tariff-raising bills; imposed heavy “sin taxes” on alcohol and tobacco; introduced the first federal income-tax and military-conscription laws; introduced an internal-revenue bureaucracy for the first time; executed thousands of accused deserters from the army; shut down hundreds of opposition newspapers in the Northern states; went off the gold standard and nationalized the money supply; introduced massive corporate-welfare schemes; deported an opposition member of Congress; and exploded the public debt, among other sins.

It must NOT be forgotten, also, that the Emancipation Proclamation was “limited and provisional” in that “slavery was to be abolished only in the seceded states [where the government had no power to free anyone] and only if they did not return to the Union.

Happy Presidential Tyranny Day.

what-evah, jt.

A spirited case for regarding Lincoln’s immediate predecessor as the Worst President Evah, here:

http://www.salon.com/books/history/index.html?story=/politics/war_room/2011/02/21/worst_president_buchanan

“Secession is neither more nor less than revolution. It may or may not be a justifiable revolution; but still it is revolution.” By inserting the word “justifiable” in this last sentence, one could detect Buchanan faltering, his knees buckling like a boxer who’s about to collapse to the mat. Sure enough, Buchanan also declared in his message that he and Congress lacked the authority to force any seceded state back into the Union. “The power to make war against a State,” he contended, “is at variance with the whole spirit and intent of the Constitution … Our Union rests upon public opinion, and can never be cemented by the blood of its citizens shed in civil war.”

But he said this 17 days before South Carolina or any other Southern state had left the Union. He was, in other words, providing the South with a handy justification for secession and letting them know the federal government would do nothing to stop the disintegration of the nation. No longer did Buchanan rattle sabers, as he had done in Utah or had threatened to do in acquiring Cuba or invading Mexico. When it came to the South and secession, the president professed to be powerless. In the North, his professed impotence seemed inexcusable, especially among those anti-slavery Democrats who remembered how Andrew Jackson had effectively handled the Nullification Crisis of 1832, when South Carolina tried to void a federal tariff law. Jackson had responded by threatening to use military force against South Carolina, which wisely had backed down. Stephen Douglas was right, though: Jackson was dead, and Buchanan was nothing like him.

Buchanan’s lack of resolve, once South Carolina and the other states of the Deep South did abandon the Union, opened the door for those rebellious states to take possession of federal property — forts, armories, post offices, customs houses — without hindrance. Fort Sumter in South Carolina, which sat on a small island in the middle of Charleston’s harbor, was among the few federal military installations that remained in the hands of the U.S. government. The fate of Fort Sumter threw Buchanan into a fit of indecision. Always something of a sponge who absorbed the ideas and strength of others around him, like W did under the mesmerizing influence of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, Buchanan continued to listen to his Southern advisors who told him to tread carefully or not at all. Throughout the month of December 1860, Buchanan nearly suffered a complete breakdown: He cursed aloud, he wept, his hands trembled, he could not remember orders he had given or documents he had read. Some mornings he found it difficult to get out of bed. Observers noticed that there was a constant twitching in his cheek, an indication that he might have suffered a minor stroke as the crisis mounted. Finally, he decided not to give up the fort, and the Southern members of his Cabinet resigned in protest. Buchanan replaced them with Cabinet officials who were more decisively Unionist in their sentiments.

He wanted someone — anyone but himself — to find a solution to the nation’s problems. Nevertheless, by the end of December Buchanan ordered a supply ship to Fort Sumter; the effort failed, however, when the ship was forced to abandon Charleston harbor when it came under heavy fire from batteries along the shore. Buchanan decided to do nothing else about the fort and the troops who defended it. In fact, it became clear that he intended to take no action against the South for the remaining eight weeks of his term. When he shared a carriage with Lincoln back to the White House after the new president’s inauguration, Buchanan said, “If you are as happy in entering the White House as I shall feel on returning to Wheatland [his private estate in Pennsylvania] you are a happy man.” Lincoln’s reply, if any, is not recorded.

More “truth” in history:

“Washington: the ‘blackest name’ in America

George Washington’s name is inseparable from America, and not only from the nation’s history. It identifies countless streets, buildings, mountains, bridges, monuments, cities — and people.

In a puzzling twist, most of these people are black. The 2000 U.S. Census counted 163,036 people with the surname Washington. Ninety percent of them were African-American, a far higher black percentage than for any other common name.

The story of how Washington became the “blackest name” begins with slavery and takes a sharp turn after the Civil War, when all blacks were allowed the dignity of a surname.

Even before Emancipation, many enslaved black people chose their own surnames to establish their identities. Afterward, some historians theorize, large numbers of blacks chose the name Washington in the process of asserting their freedom.

Today there are black Washingtons, like this writer, who are often identified as African-American by people they have never met. There are white Washingtons who are sometimes misidentified and have felt discrimination. There are Washingtons of both races who view the name as a special — if complicated — gift.

Always loved the Lincoln Memorial….never understood the Washington Memorial…it looks like one BIG Pr*ck…you’d a thought the Brits designed it since he was their biggest pr*ck at the time…

Keep up the good fight!

I’d have to go with Lincoln as very moving. FDR is well designed, but I find the entire mall area to be inspiring. The Washington Memorial is probably my least favorite.
