Mere presence of a gay group enough to make some conservatives flee

Conservative opposition to gay rights is certainly nothing new. In the minds of many on the right, a call for equal rights for gay Americans gets translated into an appeal for “special rights” that ought to be rejected, and it’s been that way since the days of Anita Bryant and before.

But I’m honestly dismayed and surprised to learn just how deep that antipathy still runs.

Earlier this year, organizers of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference agreed to open its doors to GOProud,  a group of gay Republicans billing itself as a conservative alternative to the Log Cabin Republicans. The CPAC event is a highlight of the conservative political year, with thousands of activists from around the country traveling to Washington to meet and network.

GOProud is not exactly loud and proud. The group’s home page contains not a word about gay rights. Click on “About GOProud,” and there’s still no mention of a single gay-rights issue. Instead, you read that “GOProud is committed to a traditional conservative agenda that emphasizes limited government, individual liberty, free markets and a confident foreign policy. GOProud promotes our traditional conservative agenda by influencing politics and policy at the federal level.”

In other words, these are not people likely to be making out in the convention hall or waving rainbow flags.

Nonetheless, their mere presence at this year’s CPAC is causing a serious rift in conservative circles. Longtime stalwarts of the movement and the conference, including the Family Research Council, Jerry Falwall’s Liberty University and even the mainstream conservative Heritage Foundation are refusing to participate this year. Sen. Jim DeMint has also made it clear that he will not attend. As The New York Times reports, “Former Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska has not responded to an invitation to speak. Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, has in the past criticized CPAC for being too “libertarian.” He declined to comment for this article but will also not attend.”

“Conservatives and homosexuals cannot coexist in a movement predicated on social values,” Family Research Council President Tony Perkins wrote last year in an e-mail to supporters. “Organizations whose whole reason for existence is to promote the forced public affirmation of homosexual conduct should not be welcomed at CPAC.”

To its credit, the American Conservative Union, which sponsors CPAC, is sticking by its decision despite the risk that attendees might be infected by gay cooties. Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, among others, still plan to attend. Mary Matalin is hosting a GOProud fundraiser at her Alexandria home.

Observer: I can get being gay and republican, or black and republican. The problem comes when you say that the policies are ALL good on the republican side for those groups, and saying anything non-Republican is ALL bad for those groups. I would think they would be all “everything is good, EXCEPT for these couple of small things that we plan to change their minds about.” But the whole argument within the party thing isn’t exactly in the GOP DNA.

The problem with conservatism is that it is being espoused by too many people who have absolutely no idea what conservatism is all about. They want to banish gays — i.e., destroy personal liberty — and cling to a one-size-fits all religiosity that should be no part of government policy. They believe in freedoms only for certain people, not all.

1. Make the BOE powerless but keep them around to provide approval of the mayor’s choice for Supe.
2. Provide approval right of Mayor’s supe choice to the State Superintendent.
3. Approval rights with Governor’s office.
4. Approval rights vested with City Council.

A variety of ways to protect us against a Campbell administration exist. Which alternative is better, I don’t know. I do know we don’t need the BOE and their shenanigans.

Observer and Adam…I dont always understand how someone can be gay and Republican if it is a single issue. But I do understand that politics is about a mix of issues, although many groups like to make elections seem a single issue. What confuses me is that if you are gay, you have a party whose stated official platform is to keep you from having equal non-religious rights. How that cannot be one of those issues at the top of your core principles to reject the Republicans is definitely confusing.

Good morning all. I suspect our homosexual friends have more reason than most to oppose government control of our lives. The few homosexuals I know seem to prefer freedom to rights.

Once did an economic research project, on employment discrimination and homosexuals. Never would have crossed my mind, but a homosexual friend urged me to explore whether homosexuals “benefit disproportionately” from homosexual relations. And indeed, the striking finding in the research was that almost all of the homosexuals interviewed identified specific instances where their homosexuality was a benefit in obtaining a job – sort of a “linked-in” with benefits I guess – and almost none identified an instance where they suffered an adverse job action due to sexual preference. Our ultimate finding – which admittedly had irreconcilable survey flaws – was that employment discrimination against homosexuals is a rare event. Seemingly, outside government, results matter more than “who you are.”

There are two complaints here. First, homosexuals don’t have the same legal liberties heterosexuals have. Second, homosexual couples don’t have the same legal benefits as married couples.

The first charge is simply false. Any homosexual can marry in any state of the Union and receive every one of the privileges and benefits of state-sanctioned matrimony. He just cannot marry someone of the same sex. These are rights and restrictions all citizens share equally.

I realize that for homosexuals this is a profoundly unsatisfying response, but it is a legitimate one, nonetheless.

The second complaint is more substantial. It’s true that homosexual couples do not have the same legal benefits as married heterosexuals regarding taxation, family leave, health care, hospital visitation, inheritance, etc. However, no other non-marital relationships between individuals–non-gay brothers, a pair of spinsters, college roommates, fraternity brothers–share those benefits, either. Why should they?

If homosexual couples face “unequal protection” in this area, so does every other pair of unmarried citizens who have deep, loving commitments to each other. Why should gays get preferential treatment just because they are sexually involved?

The government gives special benefits to marriages and not to others for good reason. It’s not because they involve long-term, loving, committed relationships. Many others qualify there. It’s because they involve children. Inheritance rights flow naturally to progeny. Tax relief for families eases the financial burden children make on paychecks. Insurance policies reflect the unique relationship between a wage earner and his or her dependents (if Mom stays home to care for kids, she–and they–are still covered).

These circumstances, inherent to families, simply are not intrinsic to other relationships, as a rule, including homosexual ones. There is no obligation for government to give every human coupling the same entitlements simply to “stabilize” the relationship. The unique benefits of marriage fit its unique purpose. Marriage is not meant to be a shortcut to group insurance rates or tax relief. It’s meant to build families.

Everyone knows that I’m not politically correct, but I have to say my part here. It’s well known that the homosexual lifestyle is one of the many sins included in the Bible. With that written, we must move beyond that fact and accept these sinners with a whole heart. In the case of the GOProud folk, there about 75 percent there so those of us in the conservative movement have to find ways to work on that 25 percent. We failed for many years on that account because we have fallen into the incorrect mindset that the gay lifestyle is not a psychological problem wrought with scores of health concerns and unlimited debauchery. One needs to only look at 1970s New York City and 70s and 80s bathhouses in San Francisco.

OK, what do we in the conservative movement do? The answer is in the church. All churches need to have programs to help sexual sinners on all levels whether homosexual or heterosexual deviants.

I have no idea why you secular progressives on this board say that sexual deviancy and minorities are the same thing. What? WE THE PEOPLE in the Republican Party welcome minorities of all stripes. Look at Condy Rice, Alan Keyes and Herman Cain. I could go on and on.

It’s a fact that you liberals are misinformed beyond capacity. We do not hate homosexuals at all. We welcome them into our fold. It’s just their unhealthy lifestyle that we disagree with and it’s a fact that they can get help in the churches. We became such a spineless society that has given in to quacks like Dr. Spock, Dr. Sears and many others who spoon fed us progressive psychological rooted in emotion rather than cold hard logic. This why I praise Dr. Laura who isn’t afraid to tell the truth.

The Democrat party relies on victims. They have dangled the carrots in front of the gay community (and many other groups) for years, and the gay community follows right along with only the promise of a better day. And nothing ever happens. Shoot, even Barney Frank was apprehensive about repealing DADT! Meanwhile, our country is going down the tubes with debt, taxes, unemployment, unchecked illegal immigration and more intrusive regulations. If you want to march off that cliff with your single-issue view, then enjoy the trip. I rather have a prosperous safe, secure country FIRST with less intrusion into my life and my bank account, then I’ll worry whether or not my relationship is validated by the government. I won’t be a single issue victim; my country is more important.

It is unfortunate that “conservative” implies “socially conservative” or “Christian conservative”. Being fiscally conservative or Constitutionally conservative is much more important. It is also unfortunate that “liberal” implies “Socialist”, because socialism is unAmerican.

That’s FALSE; there are 5 states and the District of Columbia where same-sex marriage IS legal. Since it is legal in those states, by the US CONSTITUTION, those marriages must be recognized in ALL 50 states!! When my pet goat and I talked it over, we decided waving a flag in a Republican convention wasn’t a very good idea. Somehow, we didn’t think that that would make him more accepted, especially by the Republicans. Since his retirement from the military, he has gotten a lot more aware of our future. He says that when he inherits my 401K, he wants to donate it to Sister Sarah’s campaign for President. I think that he might be straying a bit. He keeps watching Discovering Alaska over and over and I think that his obsession about our relationship is taking a back seat. Must be when Sister Sarah reveals her backside. That might make most anyone have second thoughts.

What’s wrong with America is that we’re so damned focused on pointing out other people’s flaws, that you don’t recognize your own. Whether you believe in Jesus, Allah, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster (Bless his Noodly Appendages)… I don’t know of any single religion where you can die yourself and save someone else’s soul. There’s one guy who’s already done that, and unless you’re his return, you should worry more about your personal salvation than anyone else’s. I don’t think St. Peter or anyone else declares you guilty by association. I thought that in the afterlife, you’re judged on YOUR OWN deeds.

We’re all American. Whether we’re short or tall, black or white, male or female, straight or gay, or any other friggin’ label you want to put on yourself. People need to give up the judging lest ye are willing to be judged yourself. The problem with stories like this is how ignorance and fear is used to deny a group equal rights. Who would choose to be hated, marginalized, cast aside by some members of society, etc.? I don’t think any person would want to sit in that seat. Science will ultimately give an answer and it has already started to do so. However, as long as ignorance and fear is running unchecked, this is one group of people that will unfortunately continue to be marginalized and mistreated. The sad part is, that is history repeating itself in another form.

@Matti: You’re right- and that’s the problem. What is driving that hate? When it boils down to it, there’s two ways to feel about something- love something or hate it. The level at which you love or hate something falls under those two categories. However, that hate is driven by the lack of understanding, compassion, empathy, etc. The lack of understanding leads to fear which ultimately leads to varying levels of hate. The progression of hate needs to be stopped and reversed.

Having known a few addicts (including being formerly married to one), if it wasn’t drugs it would have been something else (alcohol, sex, shopping, whatever). It’s chemical and scientists are working out how to counter it now that they understand the parts of the brain that light up both before and after getting the “drug” that an addict craves.

Rags…the point too many FAIL to note is the 14th Amendment:

“1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the EQUAL PROTECTION of the laws.”

Application of the 14th Amendment insures that ALL enjoy equal protection of the law; how can equal protections be applied if one group (gay people) can not be afforded the rights obtaned by marriage??

Also: Article 4, Section 1:

“Article IV – The States
Section 1 – Each State to Honor all others

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.”

If you want to take it even further:

“Article VI – Debts, Supremacy, Oaths
All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.”

The key here is ALL treaties made; for whatever nations that have made…or WILL MAKE…treaties with the United States, those laws and contracts are to be recognized. If a nation (Canada, Netherlands) allows gay marriage, it MUST be recognized by the United States!!

Check the application of the law…..that’s what it means!!

Whenever the rabid right can’t logically defend their views logically or even religiously they just start foaming at the mouth about liberals. So called conservatives who are constantly using the Bible to excuse their hate need to go back and read it. We are advised there that what we do to our fellow man we also do to Christ, we’re told to feed the poor, to judge not lest we be judged, etc. Christ himself even hung out with a prostitute. How they can talk about family values while they ignore the very book they so often wave around defies me. How can a gay person can be republican after being denied a place at the table and used to get hate votes and venom like we can see above is total disrespect for oneself.

There’s nothing conservative about the bunch who use that label now. The movement has been taken over by ignorant spoiled brats who think if they shout loud enough and repeat their lies they become true.

Many here wish to argue the moral issues pertaining to gay marriage; because of the plentitudes of positions of humans, every moral opinion would be argued by another moral opinion….and either or none could be considered correct; LEGALLY, however, is another persuasion. To deny a group the LEGAL protection of the law is more than unConstitutional…it is ALSO immoral!! To correct a wrong, a RIGHT must be invoked…or protected; that’s the Constitution…and the equal application therein!! THAT’S my point!!

Why would a gay person be a Republican? Lower taxes and a more limited government (if a large percentage of those espousing limited government didn’t wish to have same government involved in our private lives) would obviously appeal to the gay population. As a group, they tend to be high income earners. To me, it’s beyond foolish when Republicans will espouse limited government and, in the same breath, want to pass laws based on religious morality.
I and my marriage are not “threatened” by the gay lifestyle. To my fellow Republicans, we took the House because of the economy and an overreaching Federal government. It was not a mandate on “conservative, social” values. Start that and we will sadly be hearing “Four more years!” in a year and a half.

Why minorities and gays want to be associated with the Republican party baffles me. Republican voting block is white straight males. There is no inclusive tent because they win elections based on who votes. The only thing I can determine when an African American or a gay votes Republican, is that they will get noticed. They are different.

Well the last time I checked, “Groups” are not protected by the constitution. Individual’s are protected by the constitution. A gay person has full protection under the constitution that a non-gay person has. All the gay’s seek now is a political solution to a social issue.

I consider myself a moderate, which I wish more people were, as I don’t think that any one side has all the answers, I’ll repeat that, no one side has all the answers.

I believe that everyone in our country should have the same rights, period. If somebody beats me up I consider it a hate crime, not a love crime, I want the same justice that anyone else gets in our country.

No group of peolpe, no mater who you are should have special rights. We are either in this all together or we lose.

I am a liberal democrat now and a Christian because Jesus was all about people and not about rules and regulations. “For God sent His son into the world, not to CONDEMN the world, but that through Him, it might be saved.” Most “christians” spend a whole lot of time condemning and not saving. The Bible also talks about judging…guess what it is not YOUR place to decide who is a Christian and who is not. Get over yourself already.

The Republican party, I think, is about to have a major schism (I remember a great number of Handel supporters who refused to vote for Deal). When that split finally happens, you will have a Social Conservative group (who might even call themselves the “Christian Republican Party”) and a Moderate group with conservative fiscal policy. This latter and larger group will likely attract most Tea Party members, the Libertarians, and moderate Democrats (causing a schism in that camp, too). I think a three-party system is better than two, anyway.

Yes, some will continue to support liberals and their spending (but as I recall, George W. was no penny-pincher when it came to military spending). A lot of this current frustration is based on taxation with no tangible benefit. Some will also continue to spout their beliefs of a theocratic government akin to a Christian Iran (I believe such illustrious nations as Uganda are trying that, too). When you demand to legislate morality and silence other voices, you are in essence, supporting a theocracy.

However, at this time in history, people need jobs and an improved economy (just wait until gas hits $4 a gallon this summer…or egads, what if this rebellion in the Arab world shuts down production).
Whoever can help us out of this situation will win the day and the vote, and quite honestly, very few straight people will take notice when gays are allowed full citizenship in their own country — when that day comes (and it will be soon, I think), the next generation will wonder what the big deal was.

I really find it funny when conservatives can talk so easily in talking points but simply throw around questions when they are faced with a question that causes SYSTEM FAILURE. Like asking why someone can be Republican and gay, and being met with stuff like “Why can you have a brain and be a democrat OH DER HER HER ZING.” That shows nothing more than an elementary school behavior and lack of rational thought.

As for the liberals and their spending, I find that funny too. Since when the GOP was in power, they ran up the deficit a lot more. Let’s also not forget that the amount added to the deficit last year was increased substantially by allowing the GOP to have their holy grail of tax cuts for the rich.

And as for liberals needing a victim and carrots and all that, you’re being elementary school again! Liberals don’t need victims to survive. Just because your stereotype is that Republicans are strong and Democrats are not doesn’t make it true. Repeated lies are still lies.

I’m going to take a shot now for every Republican talking point lie I see repeated on here now. I had better assign a designated driver.
