Federal judge killed in AZ; congresswoman shot; surgeon optimistic for her survival, shooter ID’d

UPDATE, 4 p.m. AP has identified the gunman as Jared Laughner. Someone by that name, identifiying themselves as a resident of Tucson’s Eighth Congressional District, posted this earlier. If this is indeed the shooter, his mental stability may be in question.

Further evidence of a troubled man here. The material is so deranged that it seems impossible to assign political motive of any sort.

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D- Ariz.

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D- Ariz.

U.S. District Court Judge John Roll was among those seriously wounded today in a shooting spree at a Tucson supermarket. Shortly after 4 pm., the Associated Press, quoting a federal source, reports that Roll has died. “U.S. Marshal for Arizona David Gonzales confirmed to the Associated Press that U.S. District Judge John Roll died in the attack Saturday,” AP says.

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat beginning her third term, was also shot in the head. She too had initially been reported dead.

UPDATE: As of 4:03, a physician at the hospital reported that he is “very optimistic” that GIffords can recover.

Six fatalities are reported, including Giffords’ district supervisor, with 12 total wounded.

The gunman is in custody, reportedly unharmed.

Other victims reportedly include a nine-year-old child.

Listening to an eyewitness report on CNN, I doubt the guy shot an automatic weapon. He may have had a semi-auto instead. The eyewitness said he heard 15-20 shots. Regardless of whether the gunman was acting politically or not, there are a few things we know for sure:

1) Glenn Beck said violence would come from the left
2) Giffords was on Palin’s “target list.”
3) The GOP won in large part in 2010, they should be happy.
4) Giffords was anti-violence
5) A well known Senatorial candidate said that the electorate should exercise “second amendment remedies” if they didn’t get their way in November 2010.

All this to me shows a disconnect between reality and what the general public buys the from the right wing political rhetoric. So much so, that it leads to VIOLENCE. Is it a coincidence that he targeted an event she was scheduled to be at?

Semi-automatic firearms are the most common forms of firearms in the US. Semi-automatic, in basic terms, means that the gun will load the next round in the chamber when you fire without you having to manually perform that action. And, yes, semi-automatic rifles are used for duck hunting. Semi-automatic does not automatically equate to assault rifle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_firearm
A semi-automatic firearm, or self-loading firearm is a firearm which performs all steps necessary to prepare the weapon to fire again after firing–assuming rounds remain in the weapon’s feed device or magazine. Typically, this includes extracting the spent cartridge case from the weapon’s firing chamber, ejecting spent cartridge cases from the weapon, re-cocking the firing meachnism, and loading a new cartridge into the firing chamber. Although automatic weapons and selective fire firearms do the same tasks, semi-automatic firearms do not automatically fire an additional round until the trigger is released and re-pressed by the person firing the weapon.

The only way to legally own an automatic firearm is to apply for a Class 3 firearm license from the ATF. You’ll end up spending a good sum of $$$ and have to pass the background check of your life. That license is one of, if not, the hardest firearms license to get.

If you know your way around weapons, there are ways to modify semi’s to fire like an automatic. Ask any former member of the military whether they prefer shooting an M4A1 on full auto or semi mode. A full auto is too hard to control unless it’s mounted on a fixed object.
