Have yourself a jingle bell rockin’ Christmas

Last week I pulled your leg a little bit about a Bookman holiday tradition, but this one’s a little more serious.

Well, as serious as you can be when talking about Pee Wee Herman.

Since its first broadcast in 1988, Pee Wee’s Christmas special has been an essential part of the holidays in the Bookman household. We know — and quote — every line in the show. With both of our daughters home for Christmas, we broke out the DVD again last night, and everyone had a grand time watching it again.

Grace Jones does a rockin’ “Little Drummer Boy” in the show, but the best musical number features kd lang singing “Jingle Bell Rock” in uniquely kd style.

“This used to make me so confused when I was a little kid, I couldn’t figure out what this person was,” the younger daughter laughed last night. I guess I hadn’t seen it through the eyes of a five-year-old before, but I see her point. At that age you’re busy trying to put things in their proper categories — “three of these things belong together, but one of these things just doesn’t belong,” as Kermit used to sing — and kd makes the task a bit complicated.

Then again, the same can be said for Pee Wee himself.

Anyway, I want to wish everyone a heartfelt Merry Christmas. I’ll be back to full-time posting come Monday, even though it promises to be a rather slow news week. In the meantime, enjoy yourselves, and enjoy your friends and families. It’s a great time to try to put things not in categories, but in perspective.

And now, as a reward for enduring that cheap bit of philosophizing:

Another lesson in why you can’t trust the antique media.

“What kids see as a fun toy, I now realize is a sophisticated, high-tech marketing scheme that’s designed to put McDonald’s between me and my daughters,” said Monet Parham, of Sacramento, Calif. “For the sake of other parents and their children, I want McDonald’s to stop interfering with my family.”

As the late great Paul Harvey would have said. The rest of the story

Sockpuppets..they aren’t just for bloggers anymore!

Well boyz and girlz, I got off to a roaring start on my Christmas shopping yesterday and today would be a good day to finish. Later!

There is even a tax break for people who buy race horses.
