When the Tea Party wave crashes into D.C. wall

When last we checked in with the Tea Party movement, it had claimed victories throughout the nation in the midterm elections and served notice on Republicans and Democrats alike that things in Washington were going to change. No more earmarks. No more secret negotiations. No more deficit spending. No more lobbyists running Congress.

So where are we now?

Dana Milbank of the Washington Post reports on the education of Tea Party darling Kristi Noem:

“When the good people of South Dakota voted last month to send Republican Kristi Noem to Congress, they probably believed that she would give no quarter to the lobbyists and special interest groups who enjoyed, as she put it, “throwing money at the feet of a member of Congress.”

But since she defeated Democratic Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (in part by making an issue of Herseth Sandlin’s marriage to a lobbyist), Noem has hired as her new chief of staff . . . a lobbyist! And on Tuesday afternoon, she was the guest of honor at a “Meet & Greet” with Washington high-rollers at the powerhouse lobbying firm Barbour Griffiths Rogers. Once these boys start throwing money at Noem’s feet, she’ll soon be chin deep in lobbyist greenbacks.”

Closer to home, the folks over at Peachpundit note that anti-earmark fervor already seems to be waning among some:

Here is Senator Saxby Chambliss precisely one month ago:

“I have consistently voted for the elimination of earmarks in the past and will support the earmark-moratorium resolution today.”

And here he is today:

“I recently voted in support of an earmark moratorium to help reduce federal spending in the next Congress. As I have previously stated, while this is not the answer to our budget woes, it is a good start.”

Why, then, Senator, do you personally have 42 earmarks in the Omnibus Spending Bill?”

Johnny Isakson, for the record, requested 24 earmarks in the bill. Among other things, the two sought $5 million to support dredging in the Savannah River, $1.25 million for a “biofuels, biopower and biomaterials initiative,” $2 million for “Atlanta environmental infrastructure” and $300,000 for “meth prevention and awareness.” They were joined in many of those requests by Democrats in the Georgia House delegation.

The Financial Times
notes that no more 30 House Republicans are expected to oppose the tax-cut compromise with Obama, even though the deal reinstates the estate tax, adds to the deficit and maintains unemployment benefits at the 99-week maximum, items that have angered Tea Party activists.

(Oh, and the deal was also negotiated secretly behind closed doors by the White House and the very same Republican congressional leaders who had campaigned on openness and transparency, and had howled about “backroom deals” on health-care reform.)

“The idea that this massive tax and spend bill has not yet even been written but may be voted on by the Senate . . . is appalling, and has rightfully drawn the anger of Tea Party activists, an anger that will not be diminished,” said a blog posting by the Tea Party Patriots group.

RedState.com, another conservative blog, blasted the inclusion of – and Republican support for – ethanol subsidies in the tax bill. “If Republicans lack the will to strike out at the heart of the dependency and welfare state after a stunning electoral victory, then when will they?” it said.

However, the FT also quotes Adam Brandon, spokesman for FreedomWorks, the corporate astroturf “handler” of much of the Tea Party, as claiming that the deal is good, that “we – the small government conservatives – rolled the president. Let’s take our victory.”

I think that’s the most telling comment of all. Having helped to gin up the Tea Party movement, FreedomWorks is now selling it out in defense of the Republican establishment. After all, you can describe the tax compromise in many ways, but calling it a victory for small-government conservatives takes some fancy spinning indeed.

Kyle, the “Tea Party” is a fake group drummed up by organizations like FreedomWorks so that FreedomWorks could gain political power. So they could get money. Now that they’ve won you won’t hear from them on this.

I won’t be surprised if the “Tea Party” dies off now that things like FreedomWorks have what they wanted all along.

Let’s wait until all those people the Tea Party helped elect are actually in office before we start busting them. Personally, I’m not happy with the bill, and I look forward to the Congress ending that nonsense. And if they don’t, I will be on the streets protesting.

TH- The tax cuts created a ton of jobs until the mortgage mess (which the GOP tried to reign in before being stopped by the Dems) killed the economy. The recession and recent job losses have nothing to do with the tax rates, or have you forgotten the sub prime mess already, in favor of just blaming Bush for everything, even things that he had nothing to do with?

This is a perfect example of why the tea partiers look so pitifully ignorant. You can’t separate the terms “politics” and “compromise” unless you have a dictatorship.

You want to see what no compromise looks like? Look at Republicans for the past two years. Until someone starts compromising, ain’t nothing going to happen.

Because your tea party candidate said all the right things on the campaign trail doesn’t mean he/she will be able do one damn thing in Washington without compromising. It just doesn’t happen cause it’ the nature of the beast. In the house alone you have 435 competing interests.

So, grow up tea-partiers and come back to reality.

I’m not sure which is more noteworthy, the fact that the GOP is overflowing with lying pigs at the trough, or that the silly, naive TPers actually thought they could change them.

Talk about astro-turfed guppies…

Washington (CNN) – Tea Party leaders have “fire coming out of their ears” over the massive $1.1 trillion dollars Omnibus spending bill pending before Congress. Tucked into the legislation that would keep the government running for the next fiscal year are more than $8 billion dollars in earmarks, requested by lawmakers in both parties.

It sounds like “hyporkrisy” to Tea Party Express Chairman Amy Kremer. Her group backed GOP candidates in the 2010 election who promised to root out wasteful pork-barrel spending in Washington. She warns any republican who supports the measure risks a primary challenge in the next election cycle.

“We will go after them. We’re not going to accept it. We are absolutely not going to accept it. I mean there are all kinds of pork in there,” Kremer told CNN.

Several top republicans in Congress, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, have asked for millions of dollars worth of earmarks in the Omnibus bill. According to the spending watchdog Taxpayers for Common Sense, Cornyn has 51 earmarks in the legislation totaling $93 million dollars. The group says McConnell’s 42 earmarks add up to $86 million.

Tea Partiers, here’s the plan. What you want to start doing RIGHT NOW is keeping track of all the pork and earmarks those up for election in 2012 are putting in over the next two years.

Keep a database so you and your buds don’t forget when the next election rolls around.

I believe this is a case where the republicans still don’t get it. They are hoping and praying that the tea party fervor will die away and they can go back to business as usual. I believe they are wrong. I’d bet that 2012 sees many of these republicans. I just wish Chambliss was up for re-election.

I wonder what costs the tax payers more. Letting the tax cuts expire or paying for the pork required to bribe all the democrats and republicans to vote for it.

What the rise (and fall?) of the Tea Party illustrates more than anything is the increasing need on the part of the right wing to employ a politics of pure theater to keep the masses narcotized and impose a continuation of its failed economic status quo, which has brought utter disaster in the 2008 financial collapse.

The question is, was the Tea Party ever anything independent of the right at all, did it ever have anything genuinely independent and new to offer, or was it spawned from within the right simply as a cynical ploy to provide an ingenious diversion from the fact that the American right wing emperor has no clothes, a diabolical effort to convert its moment of absolute defeat into its greatest triumph by masking once and for all the terminal stage of American capitalism.

I perceive, in the absence of comment about democrats, that our host’s message today is that “even if all democrats are thieves, and at least a few republicans are both democrat-like thieves and hypocrites.” No news there. It is a simple tautology – those who compromise with democrats are thus compromised, no better than the worst of our society. There will always be weak-brained moderate republicans, people with no principles or standards. That is a cost of democracy.

Poll finds voters not impressed with Republicans’ House takeover that hasn’t happened yet

“With Republicans still 20 days away from taking control of one chamber of Congress, the House of Representatives, the Washington Post could no longer resist delivering the polling news that Americans are not yet convinced the GOP is the party for them.

The bold headline: “Public is not yet sold on GOP”

Imagine, waiting for the 63 new House Republicans to actually take the oath on Jan. 4 and perhaps find their seats before polling on what dismal failures they are. With Democrats controlling merely the presidency and the Senate, the newly elected Republicans have yet to accomplish a single meaningful thing. And clearly the public knows it.

As a result, “just 41%” of those polled by the Post-ABC News survey regard the GOP takeover as a “good thing,” 30% say it doesn’t matter and 27% have already decided it’s a “bad thing.”

Next week’s media poll: How pathetic the 2012 Republican presidential nominee already is.”

Wrong. Tea Party Patriots are angry and watching. Oversight Offices are being set up to watch both the Socialist-Democrat Party and the Republicans.

While I love your Senator Chambliss, he is just plain wrong on the earmarks, but I’ll forgive him. Why? Because the Honorable Senator Chambliss and rightful Republicans only want to do what’s best for a pro-growth/pro-business agenda. They just kind of lose their way sometimes and that’s OK.

It’s far different with a Socialist-Democrat who hasn’t met an earmark that she hasn’t fallen in love with. A Socialist Democrat always wants earmarks for handout purposes that only expand the dependent welfare state.

Calculations from the Congressional Budget Office say last week’s tax deal will cost the Treasury $858 billion over the next decade in lost revenues and extra spending.

But the CBO was already forecasting $6.3 trillion in deficits over that period. The latest deal will take that to $7.1 billion. And it will take the national debt to about $17 trillion — not even counting the money owed to government trust funds, such as Social Security.

Furthermore, the CBO is only counting two years of tax relief. What will happen in 2013? Do you really think the Republicans will then agree to let all the Bush tax cuts expire? Hardly. And if those cuts persist beyond 2012, the CBO warns they could add another $4 trillion or so to the debt by 2020. It’s possible the national debt would hit 100% of GDP.

Paul – the tax used to “pay” for medicare was increased for income over $200k.

Under the Health Care Act, beginning January 1, 2013, for individuals earning more than $200,000 per year ($250,000 for per year for married couples filing jointly), the Employee’s Medicare Tax rate will increase by 0.9% on wages earned in excess of those threshold amounts. As a result, those affected will have their Employee’s Medicare Tax increase from 1.45% to 2.35%. There is no increase to the Employer’s Medicare Tax. Self-employed individuals are subject to a similar increase, resulting in an increase from 2.9% to 3.8% on all self-employment income earned over the threshold amounts. However, the amount that may be deducted by a self-employed individual remains at only half of the 2.9% — stated differently, self-employed individuals may not deduct any portion of the additional 0.9% tax.

Yes you can! (count on one hand the regular conservative commenters here on the Bookman blog). On the other hand, they’ve got one cross-fingered hand in their pocket and the other is flashing a peace sign. But they Kid Obama. Health Care? The conservatives are checking their list twice, but there’s only one item on that list: Kill the Bill. Why save lives when their god, Pure Capitalism, teaches them how to pray with kinder gentler ways of euphemising collateral damage which is as Kind and Gentle as the five point palm exploding dong technique. The country has finally completed all of the five steps from grief to acceptance since 911. The conservatives have shown their sticky, viral hands like surprise kitten porn.

Hey, we finally know what their doing with the hand in their pocket.

ken R… See AmVet’s 10:48 post.

In other Tea Party news…

They are indeed upset over the pork-ladden bill. They’ve even said as much…

In related news, Tea Party Express Chairman Amy Kremer revealed to CNN that her group is nothing more than a subset of the GOP further invalidating the claim of the Tea Party not being GOP in a different dress.

One’s attitude towards the rich per se is beside the point. The problem is the system that perpetuates an imbalance of advantage and power and concentrates it in the hands of those who own the means of production and who, when they can’t buy politicians outright, can use their money to buy the message (see Citizens United decision, e.g.).

“here are certainly a good number of folks here that have a very Greek mentality and just outright have class envy.”

What is “class envy” exactly? Where did this phrase come from?

Tell me how this term which is thrown around so freely is anything other than an Orwellian right wing attempt to mask class predation behind a seemingly innocuous term (I mean, who wouldn’t want to be free of something so petty and unattractive as envy?) ?

True, but the topic wasn’t the amount of the increase. The topic was the rich never receiving the benefit or use from taxes paid.

Your statement was the rich would never receive the benefit of the taxes they paid. Did you not mean they would not receive the benefit because they’d not be able to take part in the Medicare program they’re helping to fund?

If not, what did you mean by ‘which they will never receive the benefit for or use. “

I remember having to argue with someone here that even if you increased the taxes on the rich to 100% (and they didn’t quit working miraculously), there still wouldn’t be enough revenue to close the fiscal deficit.

That kind of silly, inane, discussion is only necessary with someone inclined to believe the best solution is stick it to the rich. It displays an appalling lack of understanding of economics, incentives, and ignorance about the federal budget and deficit.

Let’s see what jay had to say in his piece:

Ted Kennedy was a spoiled rich kid whose mischief ended up killing a girl one night, and only his family’s wealth and connections saved him from prison.

That’s one way to tell the story, and as far as it goes, it’s tragically accurate.

DAMN YOU, jay!!!!

[snip]

In a strange way, the accident on Chappaquiddick may even have magnified Kennedy’s place in the history books.

The most convincing testament to Kennedy’s aura, however, comes from his fellow senators. They’re an egotistical bunch, 100 would-be presidents in waiting, and they’re not easily impressed with each other. But over the past couple of decades, even Kennedy’s most conservative colleagues would speak of him with respect, even reverence. Given enough time, he had grown into himself, and he left a legacy that far outweighs those of the brothers in whose shadow he struggled.

Teddy’s fellow senators (conservatives included) thought a lot of Kennedy. Problem is Americans don’t hold those senators in high esteem these days. Not sure their opinion amounts to much.

Teddy’s gone and that’s that.

The Tea Party isn’t going away. It will evolve to some extent, but the supporters aren’t going anywhere. It’s wishful thinking on the part of Dems and liberal Republicans to think these people won’t be extremely vocal and active up to and through the 2012 election cycle.

The Republicans and Obama can make the Tea Party fade away. They can repeal Obamacare, stop the cap-and-trade nonsense, control the borders and enforce immigration law, reform the tax system (for real, not just band-aiding what we’ve got), downsize government and spending significantly, reform the baseline budgeting process, and clamp down on corporate/institutional welfare programs. For starters. Then start working on Social Security reform.

They start doing those things seriously and in earnest and you’d be surprised how quiet the Tea Partiers would be and how quickly our economy would pick up.

I’m always amazed when people trot out their professional qualifications, make an absolute remark such as 10:34 “They’re getting that Medicare tax hike, which they will never receive the benefit for or use” then qualify their remark (11:09 “If you think someone who makes $1million per year… especially when said individual is likely to go use a private non-medicare doctor anyway for any really life threatening issue) with no data to back it up, then at 11:20 resort to “averages, buddy.”

Fact is, you asserted rich will NEVER get back or use the program. Then you said they could, but wouldn’t. At 11:20 you began speaking of averages. Which is it? The rich will NEVER use Medicare, or they will NEVER get back what they contributed, or the AVERAGE cost per rich person will not equal contributions?

Your last paragraph at 11:20 isn’t on topic – just an attempt to illustrate “I’m smart and you can’t be helped.”

DawgDad: They can repeal Obamacare,…., control the borders and enforce immigration law

That’s a bad start. There’s no point to repealing ACA when you can just implement fixes. Enforcing immigration law will require money we don’t have, and we can’t get any new money from spending cuts alone. At least, not enough to implement any one single major initiative. And since most of the initiatives being suggested are major, any leftover money will have to be somehow split across this. The bottom line is, unless we cut spending and let the tax cuts all expire (eventually if not now), then the deficit will just get higher and higher. At some point maybe all we can do is just maintain government laws at their current level minus some funding.

It will be interesting to see if a GOP controlled house truly does refuse to appropriate funds for things, and what things they decide on. My bet is on anything entitlement based, and that any “leftover” funds they think they have saved get re-injected into defense and war. Anyone want to take my bet?

Never known anybody to choose to get cancer (actually, some smokers do), or get laid off.

I invited you to engage in a serious discussion of what this notion of class warfare actually is, but you seem to prefer repeating assertions that what this or that political player is doing amounts to class warfare. But that begs the question of what class warfare really is. To my mind, a system that rewards crony capitalism and reckless financial speculation is engaging in class warfare.

Btw your assertion at 11:17 that corporate tax rates are an urgent remedy to our tax woes is misguided. As I said yesterday on Wingfield’s blog, this obsession with the nominal corporate tax rate ignores the effective tax rate, which is the amount that corporations actually pay after all their myriad loopholes and schemes.

The right is fond of throwing around the assertion that a whole class of American individuals pay no income taxes. But how silent they fall when it comes to pointing out how many corporations do not pay corporate income taxes. Ironic – don’t you think? – considering that since the Citizens United decision the principle has been enshrined that corporations can now be treated just like an individual for legal purposes. Funny how that works.

Left wing management:
Well said. The real class warfare that has been going on for the past two decades is the elimination of the middle class as the disparity between rich and poor has grown. Take this for example:
• 83 percent of all U.S. stocks are in the hands of 1 percent of the people.
• 61 percent of Americans “always or usually” live paycheck to paycheck, which was up from 49 percent in 2008 and 43 percent in 2007.
• 66 percent of the income growth between 2001 and 2007 went to the top 1% of all Americans.
• 36 percent of Americans say that they don’t contribute anything to retirement savings.
• A staggering 43 percent of Americans have less than $10,000 saved up for retirement.

Paul – I was trying to say, among other things, that I’m not trying to be adversarial. But the average end of life costs max out at $100k per person (on average), while the revenue from the additional taxes will be far, far in excess of that amount, ignoring all the other amounts the rich are already paying to Medicare. Point is, the tax increase had nothing to do with covering the healthcare costs for the rich. It was all about covering healthcare costs for everyone else. In other words, it was about income redistribution. And about increasing the taxes on the rich. Back to my original point, the rich have already gotten a tax increase of 0.9%, although that’s not as much as differential in tax rates during the Clinton Era.

We’ve discussed that before – all the stats about % of health care costs associated with last few months… AND those who say “if I’m in that situation I’ll say ‘pull the plug.’ But when the time comes it’s “okay doc, anything else we can try?”

Earlier posts – I’ve a thing about absolutes and generalizations to include a majority, especially when comments come from people who say they’re in professions where accuracy in detail is paramount. I’ve known a number of people in that category you reference and they generally will use Medicare IF their current doc is in the program. I’ve also looked at the numbers, been a while, not the tweaking from the new law, and my impression was, regardless of what was paid in over the years, it doesn’t take long for a significant number of elderly to blow past those numbers.

Also had a similar discussion with a very rich, very successful, very hard-working, smarter than nearly everybody else, financial genius (his words) Clint Eastwood fictional character wannabe who took the same position with Social Security – that the ‘rich’ would never get back what they paid in. Trouble was, he made the going-in case that SS is an investment club, not an insurance program. And I don’t think he ever got the concept of ‘discounting’ or ‘present/future values.’

Good to see national Republicans finally coming around. You will love the Georgia Republican model. Wait ’till you get in on some Georgia Republican style ethics!!!

In Georgia a short-skirted utility lobbyist is important. We have Sonny land deals, Sonny Loans, Sonny Highways, Sonny tax breaks. We just voted in a bankrupt-ex-Democrat-career politician-corrupt US congressman as our next Governor. We will honor his no-bid government contracts with honor. We watched our State School Superintendent get a face lift with stolen deaf school funds. We watched Oxendine make a mockery of his office. We notice the mysterious exile forced on Cagle. We have crooked Georgia Power legislation. We have no problem with the FDIC picking up the tab for all of our failed banks. We love, love love lobby pork.

We don’t need a Tea Party in Georgia. Now that Republicans have some more power the national Tea Party can stop pretending. The buck don’t stop here, move along.

I think you’ve been here a while. Using the term ‘income redistribution’ loosely, happens both ways. There has to be another reason, for the repubs/teapers anger, and I don’t think it has nothing to do with the spending or the deficit. What I will say to all repubs/teapers, to thine own self be true!!!! Get rid of the HATE & RACISM before you cause our country to become a 6 world (because we already are a 3rd world) with a poverty level well below the working class of China where workers consider 22cents an hour an increase in pay. GET SOME LOVE IN YOUR HEARTS & LOOK PAST THE SKIN COLOR & LET’S WORK TOGETHER. Unless all of you are filthy rich, 22cents an hour is where all working class will be in the future, especially if your repubs age given the opportunity to complete their last mission! For starters, do some research on Mitch McConnell (he has investments in CHINA); research Cantor (he has placed shorts or bets aganist the success of the American Bonds, etc). You’re right Two Cents. But even to bring up such facts these days is shot down as fomenting ‘class envy’. And meanwhile Robert Rubin plants time bombs that blow up our economy and turn around and collect paychecks that could pay the medical expenses for the whole populations of mid-sized towns.

Don’t really get the “income redistribution” angst by some. Altho data would be hard to come by, I’d guess there’s a fair number of extremely financially successful people who got where they are in part because of ‘income redistribution.”

Whose parents may have been on welfare or received other aid, so they survived by using programs that relied on income redistribution from others

Came from poor or modest means families, lived in a very small home. Whose property taxes didn’t come anywhere close to covering their K-12 education costs, so they relied on income redistribution from others to get them thru school.

Who got income-related grants or subsidized low-interest loans to get thru college, so they relied on income redistribution from others to cover the costs.

Who began businesses or went to work in businesses that were built, in part, with huge tax forgiveness incentives or special write-offs or ongoing low-cost loans or subsidies, which costs were covered by redistributing income from others.

And in many cases, the costs were borne by poor to moderate-income households.

So their success in life is because others redistributed income to their mom, their dad, or to them.

Where to begin RB?

Yes those same people are still in office. But no, they don’t have JUST the healthcare bill to hang their hats on, and it’s not the bill in its entirety that is challenged. I’ve paid attention more than enough to know that. But you still didn’t answer what CAUSED the the landslide losses. Am I to understand though that the only people you call “the same people” are Barack Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi?

Enough with teddy! Why can’t you just let sleeping pigs lie.

It wasn’t my idea to dwell on the topic, ty but it serves a purpose.

The first fool asked for an example. (as though it didn’t exist?) Actually asked is the wrong verb and he didn’t even use the magic word. But I accommodated him nonetheless. The second, ballerina-ed around his eating a crow breakfast and tacitly excused him.

By feeding these disbelievers but a taste of that vast venom, you apologists and enabling naysayers here have the opportunity to learn what you pretend to not know.

Call it tough love. You’ll be better people for it…

RB from Gwinnett,

“But like everything else in the mind of a liberal, the person who listens to the lobbyist couldn’t posssible be responsible for his/her own actions.”

~ “When the good people of South Dakota voted last month to send Republican Kristi Noem to Congress, they probably believed that she would give no quarter to the lobbyists and special interest groups who enjoyed, as she put it, “throwing money at the feet of a member of Congress.”

So liberals elected a Republican to Congress…interesting.

Ted Kennedy was bad news – period. Teddy was the drunken, immature college kid who remained just that for most of his life.

After John and Bobby were murdered, Teddy was proclaimed the “patriarch” of the Kennedy clan. The nasty deeds of his sons and nephews speak volumes of his influence on the family and the legacy created by his father.

Teddy Kennedy was an example of the nasty result that can come from a life of money and privilege – giving one a sense of entitlement. I guess you could substitute “Congress is” for “Teddy Kennedy was” and still be accurate.

The legacy of Kennedy still resides in Congress, one election will not change the culture, but time can cure the disease either by altering the behavior of those who remain or by throwing them out until there is a responsible Congress.

Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. The first bill President Obama signed into law, on January 29, 2009, was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which expands the rights of workers to sue employers over wage discrimination claims.

SCHIP expansion. On February 5, 2009, Obama signed a bill expanding the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to cover 4 million more lower-income children.

Public lands bill. On March 30, Obama signed an omnibus public lands bill, which The New York Times reported “allows for 2 million more acres to be declared wilderness… [with] more than 1,000 miles designated as scenic rivers, and adds land for national trails.”

(Already noted but an expanded description) Credit card reform. On May 21, 2009, Obama signed into law a bill providing what USA Today called the “most sweeping changes to the credit card industry in 40 years,” adding restrictions on interest rate increases and fees and restricting the marketing of credit cards to college student.

Tobacco regulation. On June 22, 2009, Obama signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which, for the first time, gave the U.S. Food & Drug Administration the authority to regulate the manufacturing, marketing, and sale of tobacco.

Protected more than 2 million acres of wilderness land and several rivers with the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009..

Restored critical protections under the Endangered Species Act, which had been removed by a last-minute rule change in the final days of the Bush administration.

Reversed the Bush rule that opened the door to mountaintop removal coal mining and canceled several individual mountaintop mining permits.

The Republicans have 2 years. If they do not work hard to cut spending in Washington and change the way business is done, then they will be voted out a the Democrats will be voted back in. The See-Saw will continue until one of these groups gets it right.

The Independants decide who wins. Not the Republican or Democratic base – The Independants.

md: you’ve mischaracterized my points. I am not suggesting someone chooses to be poor or rich, but that the choices they make don’t lead them down one path or another in anywhere close to a guaranteed or statistically significant way. If we take your number of 1/3 of students dropping out, and assume somehow this is the only relevant figure or even a very relevant figure, then it logically follows that somewhere within a statistically significant margin of error, 1/3 of people would be poor and the rest would be at least in a very good situation with a good percentage of the remaining 2/3 being rich. Since that’s not actually the case, you’re missing a LOT of the variables.

The amount of people that make choices leading them to be poor and choices leading them to be rich is very very small. Much of the poor has a high school education, a fair amount have college degrees. A good amount of the rich are entrepreneurs, but so are a good amount of the poor through failing businesses.

As for being a doctor, doctors aren’t the only people who make money. I decided to go into IT, another “guaranteed” money making field, but guess what? I’m not rich. I made all the right choices to get there, have a degree and a lot of experience, but I am still not rich.

md – it’s not all about good choices. Wouldn’t it be a good choice to major in Comp. SCience in the 70’s, I did.

Wouldn’t it be considered a good choice to keep your skills in IT current, I did.

Wouldn’t it be considered a good choice to go to work for IBM, I did.

Those were the bad choices you were referring to when you spoke about bad career choices, as the government has enabled the corporations to offshored countless IT jobs in the late 1990’s through the present time.

As and added bad choice the government has allowed H1b visa holders to continue to come to the US to take jobs from highly qualified CS graduates, BAD CHOICES I think NOT. Except maybe in the PRESIDENTS WE ELECTED.

And would you call someone who graduated in 2000 with a CS degree someone who made a bad choice? Sounds like a long DAMN career to me.

Shouldn’t he have said borrow and spend? Both sides got what they wanted. The only losers were the American people. We’ll have this same fight in two years with the same devastating uncertainty on the economy. That is if they ever get it passed. There are a few hardcore Tea Party members still fighting the good fight. “Knee” was certainly never one of them. Earmarks are just an easier and quicker way to get funds appropriated. Why go to all the time and hassle to go through normal channels?

Why not a doctor or lawyer….etc etc. Probably would have been even better choices. The point is, you made a choice……it doesn’t always work out, but you made the choice…………

That is the main point…….we make the choices…..all of them…..whether to pursue education, have a family, provide things for ourselves and family, etc etc………..nobody is making any choices for us, only ourselves…………………since that is the case, we are responsible for our position in life no matter how many excuses one wants to dream up to the contrary………for every excuse, I can show you a corresponding choice.

Hey Finn,
“So, grow up tea-partiers and come back to reality”
The reality is that these elected officials are not even ‘official’ yet. The reality is the overwhelming referendum on Obama and the dems that happened on Nov. 2nd. The reality is that things are going to change with these incoming representatives and the far left is frightened. The reality is the dems are trying to use the same disgusting tactics they have been using the last two years to force through numerous legislation at the LAST MINUTE b/c they didn’t have the courage to do it before the elections took place. The reality is that this is just another far left liberal piece on repubs. The reality is that the current leadership in Washington which is run and has been run for 4 years,by far left democrats, has a 13% favorable rating. The reality is that all the negative opinion about the tea party is based on absolutely nothing tangible. The reality is that this is total conjecture from people who are losing power based on their way of thinking and are completely frustrated and mad that a majority of people don’t agree with their socialist/social justice/redistribution ideas. The reality is that this is just the beginning……

same for you Adam…….you made that choice when you decided to go IT. Pretty simple actually…….it was you that put yourself on that particular road and you that will determine where you go next……………….but, the odds of you being poor are greatly diminished with an education………….other variables?? Absolutely…..tons of them.

Odds is the key once again. Playing the odds with choices………………

I didn’t want to assume that you had elevated being a doctor or a lawyer to the ridiculous status of being some of the only jobs for rich people, but you just proved it.

I didn’t put myself in the position of NOT currently being in IT. Despite my experience and expertise, I am employed outside of my field, and it took forever to do just that since I put a lot of effort and energy into IT. Since I am still technically below the poverty line, I am poor. So regardless of the odds, that’s where I am. Not rich, poor. Odds didn’t help me. My choices didn’t help me. And I am not where I am through any fault of my own. Does that help you understand that choices do not make your life in terms of money?

Is this how you reason?? Making assumptions beyond what is listed? Those are just 2 of many, but they should be sufficient to get the point across………they are both fields with historically high pay…..but no guarantees either.

“My choices didn’t help me. And I am not where I am through any fault of my own. ”

And who’s fault would it be?? You made the choice to pursue IT……..right?? You had other choices available at the time you made that particular choice yet you didn’t choose them……….so yes, it is through fault of yourself.

Don’t get me wrong Adam, I’m nowhere near “rich”, but I understand that I made ALL the choices leading up to the present……..every single one of them. Hindsight is 20/20, so I won’t go there, but I put myself here……..warts and all.

Say tomorrow an H1b contractor came in and was given your job making 1/3 what you are making and since you are in IT you look for a job elsewhere.

You can’t find one for what you were making so you can’t pay your mortgage and possibly lose your home.

The only job that can get is 1000 miles away and the contract doesn’t pay expenses and is at 1/3 what you were making.

Would you be upset at the gov’t for allowing all the CHEAP h1b visa holders into the country so that they can take your livelihood? Even though you know that they can’t do your job as well as you can and can’t communicate as well as you can.

AND someone tells you WELL you made the wrong CHOICE somewhere. Yep that choice would be to not see the trend 20 years before it occured.

Well as someone stated GROW A PAIR.

This isn’t about choices this is about UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES.

For g0ds sake they even allow Dentists in the US under the existing H1b rules.

You can’t legislate ‘fairness’, unless you prescribe to the socialist doctrine. In the act of being fair to one person, you always have another who is harmed. Fairness can exist in opportunities, but never in outcome. I’ll take individual liberties and personal responsibility over ‘fairness’ any day, it’s called freedom.

Choices………..

Adam

Choices are not the end all be all as you are trying to portray md. At least, your choices are not the only choices that are factors in what happens in your life. So you see, even though I made choices to pursue IT, I didn’t choose to make all that effort and not get a job in the field somewhere down the line. I didn’t choose to have to work in a different field just to make ends meet. A mortgage situation isn’t comparable, but even if it was, the risk wouldn’t have been something you could have foreseen as taking a hit like it did. Your choices were good, mine were good, but we’re both screwed. Other people’s choices led to that, not ours.

To get to your point about self employment, first of all that’s awfully convenient. Have you tried it? I have. I am currently part owner of a business that really isn’t bringing home the bacon like it was supposed to. Luckily for me I had to do all the work for funding it myself since banks aren’t lending, so I’m not screwed on payments. But I am also working full time at another job. So I am working full time in two places, with all my intelligence, education, experience, and yes CHOICES, and I’m still below the poverty line. My choices are not the only choices that affect my life.

I can only assume your continued belief that personal choices mean everything is based either in a religious/ideological context and/or you think anyone opposed to your position is so because they want someone to blame. I don’t agree with placing blame anywhere BUT myself, but I also recognize that I don’t control my entire fate through my own choices. Since I don’t believe in placing blame somewhere for everything that I can think of, I also don’t blame myself when I know I’ve done everything right. I don’t have to place the blame somewhere else when I recognize that either.

Anyway the point is that personal choices don’t make a life. They can help, they can hurt, or they can have no net effect on a given subject. That is my point. My consistent point. You can use all the anecdotes and references you want and this will still be true.

don’t like having to play by anothers rules, then make your own.

Okay I make my own rules ALL H1b visa holders for the IT industry have to go back home. WHAT? THE GOVERNMENT SAYS THEY DON’T HAVE TO? LOL, hows that for a rule.

IF, you were self employed you wouldn’t have to worry about another taking your job…..right??

There are very very few self employed IT personell in this country, Most CORPORATIONS have RULES AGAINST hiring INDEPENDANT CONTRACTORS.

You chose to play that particular game.

I chose the IT field because it was interesting and still is, but how many industries have been ATTACKED by their own government?

Do you recall there ever being any guarantees that the job would be yours for ever and ever??

It’s not a job it’s a flippin CAREER, and no a single job is for ever and ever. I have worked in many IT shops in the Atlanta area since the late 70’s. The IT industry is not making buggy whips for goodness sakes as you seem to be implying.

Choices………..
———————–

The CHOICES have been made by others to attack the IT industry, why? because the corporations have never seen IT as a value add position.

The next time your bank statement comes, thank an AMERICAN IT WORKER.

The next time you pay your electric bill thank an AMERICAN IT WORKER that it’s posted to your account correctly.

Your phone, cellphone, your internet connection, and many other aspects of your everyday life have been brought to you by the AMERICAN IT WORKER.

From here on out if its forked up blame the corporations for offshoring or bringing in H1b visa holders to do the IT work. Try calling the help desk and TRY to understand the call center worker who doesn’t speak English as their first or maybe even second language.

To use these companies is YOUR CHOICE and good luck with it.

I choose freedom, freedom from Democrats and freedom from Republicans, but mostly freedom from arrogant politicians such as our current POTUS and the three who preceded him.

Add the Congress to that list of arrogant politicians who have decided my money is their money to spend to buy votes.

The choices we make may define a path but the path itself contains many more choices and I opt to have the freedom to make those choices whether I fail or succeed. I have lifelong friends who have more money than they or their children could ever spend – money earned by making good choices.

I also have friends who struggle, not necessarily from bad choices, but yet they struggle. All we can ask is to have the opportunity to determine our fate and accept the consequences.

Evil people succeed and good people fail, that is simply the way of life. A life should not be judged by the good or bad things that happen to a person but by the manner in which the person deals with those good and bad events.
