For Aretha, who’ll be travelin’ a hard road

There’s nobody like Aretha, the Queen of Soul. She rocks, she wails, she croons, she scolds and pleads and she sings praises to the Lord in a voice that He gave only to her.

She was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the top-rated vocalist in Rolling Stones magazine’s Greatest Singers of All Time. And this week, of course, we learned that she is struggling with pancreatic cancer.

My favorite Aretha song is probably “Call Me,” but the versions posted on Youtube don’t do it justice and in most cases are marred by some unfortunate work by her background singers. But this is probably her signature number.

Ladies and gentlemen, Aretha:

I also wanted to go old school on the clip if possible, Josef.

I saw her at the Fox a few years ago, and it wasn’t the same. The vocal power had disappeared, and she was grossly overweight.

HD, love the sentiment int hat song.

Even though we come in alone and we go out alone, we’re all in this crazy mess together. For me, there is no fear in that. Yet…I love the old line about “growing old being tough, but the alternative seems even worse”!

One thing always stands out in my mind about your chosen song Jay, and no disrespect intended towards Aretha who IS about the best damn singer ever………

I had the Jimi Hendrix/Otis Redding album, live at Monterey. Before he does the song Respect, Otis says something like, Here’s a song Aretha stole from me. Does anyone know anything about that? He died in a plane crash not too long after that ……………..

Otis did write that song, and recorded it first. When he said she stole it, I’m assuming he meant she took it and made it her own, which she certainly did.

And I’m also sure he enjoyed the songwriting royalty checks rolling in, until the plane crash that is.
