Motorhead takes King of the Dittoheads to school

As you may have heard, Motor Trend magazine has named the Chevy Volt its “Car of the Year:”

“some of the most advanced engineering ever seen in a mainstream American automobile … Attention to detail is impressive … The front end graphic is outstanding — strong, confident, and tastefully upscale … Just counting the gas, the Volt returned 126.7 mpg. Converting the gas used to energy used (79.5 kW-hr) and adding that figure to the electrical energy used gave us a notional 72.9 mpg. … Moonshot. Game-changer. A car of the future that you can drive today, and every day.”

But Rush Limbaugh wasn’t impressed with the latest offering from the much-despised “Government Motors”:

“Folks, of all the cars, no offense, General Motors, please, but of all the cars in the world, the Chevrolet Volt is the Car of the Year? Motor Trend magazine, that’s the end of them. How in the world do they have any credibility? Not one has been sold. The Volt is the Car of the Year.”

Todd Lassa of Motor Trend then responded to Rush’s attack on his magazine’s credibility with a rebuttal that is, shall we say, a little pointed.

“Our credibility, Mr. Limbaugh, comes from actually driving and testing the car, and understanding its advanced technology. It comes from driving and testing virtually every new car sold, and from doing this once a year with all the all-new or significantly improved models all at the same time. We test, make judgments and write about things we understand….

“If you can stop shilling for your favorite political party long enough to go for a drive, you might really enjoy the Chevy Volt. I’m sure GM would be happy to lend you one for the weekend. Just remember: driving and Oxycontin don’t mix.”

“I love progress in technology and and conservation!”

I’ll agree the Volt is progress in terms of technology. It is questionable whether it represents progress in conservation. We really won’t know until the carbon payback analysis is published. If it turns out the Volt has negative net carbon payback, it will be detrimental to the environment.

That’s funny right there. The Chevy Volt is an excellent marvel of technology for sure but at a list of just over $40,000………not sure it is Car of the Year material. The Chevy Cruze would be a better choice and with the savings you could by over 4600 gallons of gas at $3 a gallon. The Buick Regal or new Hyundai Sonata Turbo would also make good choices.

My Car of the Year however….The Ferrari 458 Italia.

There are not a lot of electric/hybrids on the road. I cannot give you a chart like Jay, but this should help……If you lined up all the alternative energy cars up, they might reach across a small state. If you lined up all the gas powered cars up, they would reach across the US many, many times, at which point a BMW will pull out to pass.

You can make fun of Limbaugh all you want about the oxycontin but that guy has more knowledge in his left pinky about economics than our President does. Obama has never had a private sector job so what does he know about meeting payroll or better yet putting his money at risk like many of us do.
On the Volt thing, was government money used for that? I would love to have that luxury. BTW, what are these people going to use to charge this car? Oh that’s right we can’t build nuclear or electrical power plants.

No real surprise in the Volt being MT Car of the Year – MT goes for new-fangled.

Just look at some previous award winners: The list includes the 1960 Chevy Covair (unsafe at any speed), the ‘80 Chevy Citation (front-wheel drive – what an innovation), the Chevy Vega (what, no Ford Pinto?), the Chrysler K-Cars, and the ‘97 Chevy Malibu.

The Corvair’s rear-mounted air-cooled engine – cool. It may have been hard to keep these cars in the showroom, but, alas, harder to keep them on the road – handling problems put them in the ditch.

The Vega was likely named because of its revolutionary 2-year design/market cycle. Of course, if ended up being one of the worst reliable cars made by GM.

The K-Cars – so, Chrysler can manufacture no-frills automobiles that the government will buy by the fleet to ensure that we have 3 major car companies in the US.

The ‘97 Mailibu – still can’t figure that one out (neither could Car & Driver, who said in ‘99 that, in hindsight, the car was not award-worthy).

Personally, I wish the Volt success – but being MTCOTY does not really make it a special car.

Adam – how can a car not yet on the market, that won’t be sold in 44 states, requires a taxpayer funded rebate to put it near 40K, and at best is a tree huggers wet dream, be crowned car of the year? Answer – there is someone, somewhere pushing an agenda. Who and where? The same folks who are pushing carbon caps, wind mills, batteries, and other pie-in-the-sky alternative energy sources that without government social engineering have no chance. And, you ask how can one wonder if Motor Trend is becoming a mouthpiece for the Left?

williebkind: I dislike Rush because he is a lout, a druggie AND a hypocrite. His politics have nothing to do with it. I was an avid Boortz listener for probably 20 years or so until he sold out to the Republicans and started toting the mail for them. He’s lost his creativity and isn’t allowed to express his thinking any more. As to Rush? The first time I listened to him was right after the Republicans took control of Congress for the first time in 50 years. They were holding up some of Clinton’s appointments. Not because there was any reason for them to do so, but just because they COULD. How do I know this? It was the topic on Rush’s show that day and he was laughing gleefully about it. I was disgusted and never really paid him much mind after that.

I don’t watch Fox news either. Why you might ask because it’s not left wing? No I would have to reply, because they aren’t trustworthy or credible (never watch 60 minutes for the same reason). You see at the beginning of their existence, FOX news rushed to “report” something that just was true. I couldn’t trust them to give me the truth. They may have changed, I don’t know. they screwed me in the front end so I don’t trust them now.

You won’t see real Progress on electric cars till he’s finished. He’ll soup it up to go 80 mpg and travel 400 miles before a refill. We don’t have a real electric car now because nobody’s invited Rednecks to join the team. The nice part will be we can drive it to the course and right onto the cart paths.

And I agree with the guy that says some of these warning labels just keep dumb people alive. Why do we need to have “Do Not Drink” on all the anti-freeze containers? joe – You can make fun of Limbaugh all you want about the oxycontin but that guy has more knowledge in his left pinky about economics than our President does

That’s BS. First of all, private sector job doesn’t mean you know crap about payroll anyway. Private sector business owner or manager maybe. And he has plenty of people in his cabinet who do have that knowledge. At least you didn’t stoop to the falsehood of saying his cabinet doesn’t know anything either. Plus, running a business at all doesn’t mean you’re actually good at it, or that you work the numbers yourself at all. All Rush has to do is sit in a chair and speak. The rest of the work is done FOR him. He doesn’t know economics any more than a McDonald’s worker who just takes orders does.

JohnnyReb: how can a car not yet on the market, that won’t be sold in 44 states, requires a taxpayer funded rebate to put it near 40K, and at best is a tree huggers wet dream, be crowned car of the year?

Also, restaurants and stores will have charging areas available while you eat and shop, with a small fee for electricity used. They could put the recharging area right next to the Handicapped Parking, because that is what they will be, handicapped by the cost, the limited range, and the inconvienence of electric cars.

Obama Bolsters U.S. Hybrid Automobile Sales in Waning Consumer Market

“President Barack Obama’s administration has bought almost a fourth of the Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. hybrid vehicles sold since he took office, accelerating federal purchases as consumer demand wanes.

The U.S. General Services Administration, which runs the government fleet, bought at least 14,584 hybrid vehicles in the past two fiscal years, or about 10 percent of 145,473 vehicles the agency purchased in that period, according to sales data obtained by Bloomberg under a Freedom of Information Act request. In fiscal 2008, hybrids accounted for less than 1 percent of government purchases, the data showed.

[snip]

About 3,100 of the hybrids purchased by GSA were paid for out of $300 million that the agency received from the 2009 economic stimulus package, said Sara Merriam, a spokeswoman for the agency, in an interview. Another 5,600 were bought with proceeds from selling older cars in the government fleet, she said. A majority of fiscal 2009 hybrid sales came after Obama took office in January 2009.

Dave Dave Dave, you poor little mis guided fool. I see why he is your hero. you can’t think for yourself or do any research. Limbaugh frequently mentions the EIB (Excellence In Broadcasting) network, but this is a mythic construction, as he told the New York Times in 1990. I mean come on now, that’s 20 YEARS ago……… It’s just something he calls his show you knuckle head.

Once again, Rush gets the last laugh. As many of the comments above show, he is a past master at enticing liberals to foam at the mouth. I heard his comments on the radio. His main point was that the Obama administration in buying a lion’s share of the Volt’s thus insuring the success of this alleged advance in automobiles from Government Motors. Where I come from this is called robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Hillbilly:

The number one thing they look for in a vehicle is one that is easy to get in and out of. That’s why they don’t like small cars.

My car is small, but the seats go wa-a-a-y back and the head room is exceptional . It’s a Subaru Outback, so the trunk is REALLY big.

My husband is about 2 inches taller than me, but his legs aren’t as long. When he had his ‘58 Corvette, I literally had to fall out of the thing. I can sympathize with the older crowd.

I’m a bit claustrophobic so I refuse to ride in the backseat of anyone’s car. The only time I had no other option, it was summertime…there were three people in the backseat…got stuck in a traffic jam for two hours. I began shedding clothes because I couldn’t breathe.

Never again!

You tools can keep talking pill popping references but do you even realize that his had made it to the top of his profession & he is deaf. I thought you liberals were the sensitive lot.

But I’m not a liberal Hellboy. I despise fanatical mindless left wingers as much as I despise radical right wingers. I’m someone who actually HAS a brain and doesn’t need a Rush Limbaugh or a Michael Moore to tell me what I think.

Nice try tool. Keep rolling off the catch phrases you learned form your “betters.” What sad is that your “betters are dumber than dog squeeze, so what does that make you?

I had a Ranger that was extremely comfortable, once you were in it. It was hell to get in and out of, with my legs and feet and all. When the motor finally blew up, at 240,000+ miles, I moved up to an F150, extended cab. Greatest thing since sliced bread.

Mr. Limbaugh is PO’ed because a Bentley wasn’t the Car of the Year. From my limited experience with Mr. Limbaugh, he’s very negative about science and scientific advances and observations. He sort of reminds me of the mindset of the Catholic church in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Church felt it had all the answers — absolute power over the masses — and rejected scietific discoveries that made them look really stupid in the end.

But, in the end it’s hard to take Limbaugh seriously, he’s such a joke!

“The Chevy Volt is a disaster. It is extremely expensive…The only people who are going to buy it are going to be very rich people who are going to park it outside their townhouse for ostentatious show of how virtuous they are while they drive around in their Cadillac Escalade.”

“This is a classic example of what happens when the political and ideological desires of an administration are imposed on a private company…It’s not how many jobs you create or even save, it’s can you sell a product in the market that will make a profit? Otherwise, it’s a farce.”

Advertised as an all-electric car that could drive 50 miles on its lithium battery, GM addressed concerns about where you plug the thing in en route to grandma’s house by adding a small gasoline engine to help maintain the charge on the battery as it starts to run down. It was still an electric car, we were told, and not a hybrid on steroids.

That’s not quite true. The gasoline engine has been found to be more than a range-extender for the battery. Volt engineers are now admitting that when the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery pack runs down and at speeds near or above 70 mph, the Volt’s gasoline engine will directly drive the front wheels along with the electric motors. That’s not charging the battery — that’s driving the car.

So it’s not an all-electric car, but rather a pricey $41,000 hybrid that requires a taxpayer-funded $7,500 subsidy to get car shoppers to look at it. But gee, even despite the false advertising about the powertrain, isn’t a car that gets 230 miles per gallon of gas worth it?

We heard GM’s then-CEO Fritz Henderson claim the Volt would get 230 miles per gallon in city conditions. Popular Mechanics found the Volt to get about 37.5 mpg in city driving, and Motor Trend reports: “Without any plugging in, (a weeklong trip to Grandma’s house) should return fuel economy in the high 30s to low 40s.”

Car and Driver reported that “getting on the nearest highway and commuting with the 80-mph flow of traffic — basically the worst-case scenario — yielded 26 miles; a fairly spirited backroad loop netted 31; and a carefully modulated cruise below 60 mph pushed the figure into the upper 30s.”

1) Limbaugh slamming the car before he has driven it = stupid
2) response from Motor Trend = very wiity
3) Motor Trend voting a car that hardly anyone can buy based on availability = we don’t understand their criteria very well
4) People on this Blog slamming the car because it’s too “Liberal” = about as clueless as I’ve seen anyone be. (which I guess would include Rush)
5) People on this blog saying the Volt is the next best thing to sliced bread = not nearly as clueless, but you need to drive it to make this determination
6) The Volt doesn’t sell well because it’s too expensive compared to the Leaf or Prius = reality that wil soon come to pass.

For me, I’ll be in line for a 2012 hybrid of some sort unless there is an electric that has a range greater than 200 miles. (I’m looking at you TESLA MOTORS) Gas prices will continue to rise if we do not take major steps as a country to reduce our demand. Having an electric car that uses much more cheaply supplied plug-in power (and likely mostly free solar power), is what the future holds. There will be several steps until we get there. Just the same way there were several steps to move from horse & buggy to motorcar.

Prepare for it people, it’s coming!

First person to mention Oxycontin in this debate loses. No-really. The shills are all on the side of the electric crap. Just let a Volt or a Leaf shut down in the second from the right lane on 285 and receive an overdose of 18-wheeler tracks, and the federal subsidy to get people to buy these environmental nightmares will have to be 100%. As for Motor Trend, who gives a rat’s rear what they name as car of the year. I am sure it too is populated by candy-arses that keep a rag soaked in kerosene in their back pocket to keep the flies off their lilly white arses. Meanwhile, just what damage is done to ye old mother earth to manufacture all those batteries?

Our demand is barely a factor in the equation. The “problem’ is that China has finally joined the modern World and industrialized. They are taking all the oil that we used to get.

From GM’s website:
Range 25 to 50 miles, then you have to fire up a gas powered generator to go farther.
Charge time, 10 Hours. TEN HOURS.
After the initial 40 miles of battery power, the car gets 35 to 40 MPG. Like a Honda.
How much does the Volt cost? $48500.00.
GM has chosen LG Chem of Korea to supply the lithium-ion cells. Why?

I think I’ll just buy a Honda and use the left over money to buy 400,000 miles of GAS!

It looks to me like Rush is right again.

Todd Lassa of Motor Trend just removed any credibility his magazine ever had when he exposed his hostility toward the Republican Party and his LDS (Limbaugh Derangement Syndrome).

This is exactly the kind of BS that needs to stop. Someone loses credibility because they think unfavorably of the Republican Party or one of its operatives? So I have to follow all GOP things unquestioningly in order to be credible. No, STFU. Go crawl back into your made up land where everyone has the same exact thoughts, emotions, etc as everyone else. Go back to your “utopia” known as Fox News.

Plus add India to that, and there’s another billion people wanting to drive. (but they get the TaTa)

Taxpayer30189 says: “How much does the Volt cost? $48500.00.”

See my #6 above. Like I said, the Volt (~50K) is a good step, the same way the Tesla Roadster ~$110K) is a good step. But for mass-market, we’ll need the Leaf (~30K), the Prius(~25K), and the 2012 Tesla S-Type (their upcoming mid-size car ~ 60K) (and 2015-2018 Tesla small car -hopefully <40K).

My 2000 Saturn (when Saturn was “independent” of GM) is now at 200,000 miles. GM killed Saturn when it made Saturn just another GM brand and diluted the quality.

GM also killed the electric car when it had the chance to become the world leader of the future automotive revolution. But electric cars have so little maintenance that they don’t get much residual income that the usual clunkers give them.

the problem with electric cars is this: where will we get a secure supply of dilithium crystals? The Klingons are hoarding their supply and the Ferengi shoot prospectors on sight.

Electrical warp drive was a tremendous advance in the horseless carriage. And I applaud the Chinese for inventing it. But answer me this: why is it that a half hour after you charge the battery, you want to charge it again?
