BuiltToLast, the “Right” does not make Presidents, the plutocracy does. as I said a few days back, in the words of the immortal Bruce Sprinsteen (via Bo Diddley), if the plutocrats think she’s the one, then “….whaoooooooooo, she’s the one…”. personally, as I noted yesterday, she’s a staking horse, and her “value” to the right is as a fundraiser and tomato lobber. she’ll get “15 minutes” of convention fame, but she’s not POTUS material and everybody knows it (maybe even Sarah Palin).

The Big Question that’s looming on the political horizon:
Is Grover Norquist right that REPUBLICANS can win a government shutdown this time around because unlike ‘95 they have an extremely powerful propaganda organ at its disposal in FOX News?
According to Norquist, the ‘95 shutdown was spun by a liberal media as a “Republican shutdown”. This time, he thinks, it will be different.

If anyone ever doubted the dumbing down of America, look no further than the possibility of Sarah Palin for president in 2012. Any candidate of her caliber running for this office many years ago would have been a next to impossible event. If any further proof of this dumbing down is needed, just look at the Tea Party lug nuts supporting her.

George was MAYBE qualified to be the Commissioner of MLB.
All of his previous failures, notwithstanding.
Granted he would have made the current boob, Bud Selig, look magnificent in comparison. But all he could have done in that role was to further screw up the National Pastime.
At least Dover AFB would have had a lot less activity. (If you catch my drift, chickenhawks…)

Biden has said at least twice as many completely ignorant, moronic comments than Palin has. His intelligence is not a bit higher than hers, and probably a good bit lower. But he’s also got a D by his name, so few people seem to care. He said JOBS is a three letter word, he said FDR got on TV to talk about the stock market crash (before FDR was elected and any President had appeared on TV), and innumerable others.

I agree—he seems remarkably BS-free most of the time.
Funny, my criticism of Biden has, generally, been from the left. As a senator he backed some pretty crummy, anti-consumer legislation. But I warmed up to him when he was running for president last time around, myself; and I share your personal fondness for his overall demeanor.
And I think the world owes him a debt of gratitude for his classic wisecrack at Rudy Giuliani’s expense (that being how every sentence out of rudy’s mouth can be summarized as “a noun, a verb, and 9/11.”) in doing so, Biden made it OK to poke fun at those who attempt to make 9/11 the all-purpose conversation stopper.

I’m old enough to remember all the quips making the rounds when a B-list former actor from California was making noises about a possible run for the presidency. The “Bedtime for Bonzo” jokes abounded. It wasn’t funny to those folks a couple of years later. I think it’s wise to take a Palin run seriously. The most recent election proved that there is an abundance of people who will vote for a candidate expressing extreme conservative values and that a candidate’s ignorance and even possible criminality is no bar to that.

I read that op-ed piece this morning. I didn’t see it quite as funny as you did. It was more of an insult to the people who do that job. In case you don’t remember, right after that Dec 25th incident, people wanted to drag DHS thru the mud over “security failures”. Now it’s supposed to be some kind of joke? Those people on that flight might not have a clue as to how close they came to meeting their maker that day.
DHS was castigated long and hard, and I even remember a former blogger here trying to poke fun at me about that situation by saying that TSA didn’t do their job. In all actuality, TSA had nothing to do with that guy’s screening, but they still got tarred and feathered anyway. I’d like to see Krauthammer, or anyone else who has a problem with TSA, perform that job for a few weeks and see how they really feel about it.

There’s been one attempt at detonating a bomb like that already. It would take too much explosives for someone to get thru without being detected to achieve that. They guy that tried it had, I think, a pound of explosives. When he detonated, he was the only one killed. I think there were some injured. His body absorbed most of the blast, and the rest of the blast was directed away from the intended target.

Dusty: Of your earlier comment re: MBA and National Guard. Fair point. I did find these to be actual truths about Bush that I was not aware of. So I retract the not qualified part. I still believe, however, that Obama and Biden are NOT the least qualified to ever be in office.
Bush spent all his time and energy on pro-business leanings, as well as a business MBA, and still came out believing tax cuts for the wealthy stimulates job growth. Seems he didn’t really learn economics very well. Qualification goes beyond an earned degree and military service.
In addition, an MBA is every bit as much a claim to success as a law degree. Based on that, I’m finding very little credibility to the idea that Obama is the least qualified president of all time.

“Some things might be overkill or unnecessary, but then again, seemingly unconnected incidents can be linked by the smallest of details. ”
Like doing full body scans and/or pat downs on the pilots who fly the planes? Oh wait…all of sudden that is now not necessary. Yesterday it was vital and today it is not…what happened? Did all of sudden the threat change or a new technology come into existence?
Of course not, pressure by pilots and airlines saying this was a waste and ineffective over ruled a silly and useless directive. What happens when the pressure to end it for passengers becomes to much? TSA will back off as well.
If these procedures are so effective why doesn’t Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport have even one full body scanner?

My take on the pilots is to screen them like everyone else. I think they’re trying to come up with some kind of verification system to authenticate their employment. Many people don’t remember the pilot who attacked his co-workers with a spear gun and ax in the cockpit. I think it was a FedEx crew or something like that.
If I were the one making the decisions, there would be a lot of people mad at me, because I’d screen everybody. The Ft. Hood incident, along with catching blond-haired and blue eyed terror suspects should let everyone know that profiling would be a moot point. AQ is trying to recruit Westerners for the fact that they would not be profiled. You have to remember, metal detectors only detect metal and not liquids or powders. If I could show you all pictures of some of the things I see, you’d understand the need for various searches.

Palin has narcissistic personality disorder. Google it, look at the symptom list, and you will see what I mean. As an independent, I voted against the GOP because she was on the ticket. I held my nose and voted for Obama, and I usually vote for GOP. Will do the same if she is on the ticket again. I hope the GOP gives me a hard choice to make in 2012. They did not in 2008. Us independents tend to look at candidates closely. Nothing has changed with palin she is hopelessly in over her head.

We can’t all be as smart as you, Jay. It takes a lot of mental horsepower to defend 10% unemployment for going on two years.

No, l’il Barry, all it takes is an honest glance at one little chart:

Adam, I’m just looking at the percentage of folks who don’t have jobs. Under the Idiot Messiah, that number has been near 10% for an excruciatingly long time. Under our President Bush it was much lower. You can keep citing the job creation number all you like, but for all your flailing, the unemployment rate stays the same. I guess the problem with your job-creation arm-waving is that you’re only looking at the jobs created, and ignoring the jobs destroyed.
Idiot Messiah: 10% unemployment.
President Bush: Lower than that for eight years.

Believe me, I would LOVE to see this economy turn around, and that’s why I am so strongly opposed to most everything Obama is doing. Growing the government, increasing regulation, expanding entitlements, and debasing the currency are most definitely NOT the route to increasing the living standards of anyone save government employees.

That’s a legitimate argument, l’il Barry. But when you stoop to defending it with illegitimate statistics, you weaken it significantly.

You’re going to have to explain why the unemployment rate is not a legitimate statistic. That’s the headline number for a reason. I already get that Obama has single-handedly created zillions of jobs, so there’s no need to repeat that. The fact remains that more people are unemployed on Obama’s watch than there ever were on Bush’s.

Furthermore, if you blame President Bush for today’s unemployment rate, shouldn’t you also be crediting him for the jobs created to this point? Seems like your side has a little problem with consistency.

Adam, I’m just looking at the percentage of folks who don’t have jobs.
That’s not what the number actually represents. It represents the number of people receiving unemployment insurance. The number of people underemployed, or unemployed but not receiving UI, or retiring, etc is not figured in. All that stuff except for maybe the retirees is important.
Aside from that, that “one little number” you have is also incorrect (it’s actually 9.6%), and hasn’t been going on for two years. It DID go above 10% earlier, and has dropped from that. You should also pay attention to actual jobs being created. These jobs aren’t just jobs that have appeared without any takers. They are FILLED jobs. And they are increasing now, as opposed to decreasing consistently under the last administration.
Perhaps people didn’t apply for UI before because they thought under Bush they would surely be denied for trying to “get a handout?”

The show has made headlines in recent days because of an outcry by some who believe that political supporters of Sarah Palin may be manipulating the voting system. Bristol Palin has remained on the show, despite consistently landing at the bottom of the judges’ leaderboard.

Yeah, I guess a net loss of “only” 311,000 jobs is an improvement! Hopefully you now understand why the Idiot Messiah’s 10% unemployment rate never gets any better–he’s destroying more jobs than he’s creating.

LLB – I am far from an Obama supporter. But if you were to have been in the construction or service industries during 2001-2010 you would have seen the number of illegal immigrant workers taking the jobs once held by American citizens.
If you were in the IT industry you would have seen the number of H1b visa holders taking jobs once held by American citizens.
If you or the company you work for employ either of these category of workers you should look to yourselves for being part of the problem with these unemployment numbers.
The number of unemployed or underemployed degreed workers in this country is way too high. The corporations are offshoring the middleclass rapidly.
What is the solution? I don’t have an easy answer either, but it cannot be blamed totally on either Bush or Obama.
I do know tax revenues are down partially from the fact that a lot of 1099s NEVER PAID TAXES.

Jay had a very interesting post a while back showing how over the last few decades, job growth has been slower to recover after a recession than in previous years, and it gets worse with each business cycle.
I blame the ever-expanding government. It takes more and more out of the productive part of the economy in taxes, it never stops adding new regulations, and it continues to sink its destructive tentacles into the education system. All this throws sand in the gears of innovation and entrepreneurship, which is where our growth comes from. Government also makes it easy for a large segment of our population to do nothing but collect entitlements paid for by people who work for a living.
The answer is to get government off the backs of our businesses and education system and kick the parasites in the ass.

We will eventually come out of this recession, after all there has never been a recession that we haven’t recovered from. However, it looks like job growth will be even slower than in the past, continuing the trend Jay pointed out. And no wonder–look at what’s happened with regulation and the additional burden of Obamacare that the Idiot Messiah has foisted onto Americans despite their very vocal and clear opposition.

LBB, you’ve just made it very clear that your opinion is that government is to blame for all of the problems that have occurred related to the recession, including being the base cause. You are wrong about that so we’ll just have to disagree, apparently.
Innovation and entrepreneurship are stifled primarily by other companies that are already in power creating a market whereby they get to be the top dog. They either actively seek out and destroy competition with their strong arm tactics, or they simply are so big that no one else can get any business. That’s hardly a free market. As for regulation, plenty of regulations were DROPPED under the Bush administration and that has led to more trouble over the past decade than in the previous 5. Obama and congress both haven’t even done much to reverse dropped regulations, and have barely added new ones except for the health care bill. Those regulations have not caused health care costs to go up any more than they would have otherwise, and only a handful of companies opposed the bill or got themselves exempted. The public, believing that the health care bill would force them to pay for something they can’t afford and/or exempt Muslims (both are not true), then expressed in opinion polls a dislike of the bill. Meanwhile the bill passed, and then on September 24 the public’s opinion changed when they realized what the bill actually DOES. Misinformation was far too powerful, and again that misinformation was coming from corporate interests.
It’s not the government that’s causing problems for the people right now, it’s corporations. They don’t have to, but they CHOSE to.

Greedy, profit-seeking corporations are holding down economic growth?
Does that make sense even to you?
Adam

LBB – Yes. Many are so greedy that they are deciding to NOT hire people even though they have plenty of money to do so. They are not producing as much as a result and if their bottom line is really to keep making profits, they need to both hire and produce. Otherwise where does the money go? You can’t survive, as a business, on “old money.” But many big businesses don’t seem to understand that and would rather “ride it out.” So much for taking risks, huh?

I don’t believe there are many companies who are forgoing sales. Companies are producing what they can sell. If they’re not hiring, it’s because they don’t need to. It ain’t charity, it’s business, and businesses are going to maximize their profits by increasing the revenue side and controlling the cost side.
