A little travelin’ music that’s done some travelin’

Bluegrass, in its purest form and in various mutations, seems to be seeping its way into a lot of popular music these days. I think it’s great, both because I love the music itself and because it helps to ensure that an important strain of American culture and the instruments and players that helped create it survive for at least another generation or two.

In fact, listening to Mumford and Sons, I think its preservation is pretty much guaranteed, given that these boys are from London. No, not London, Kentucky. The one in England, with the queen and the prince about to marry his princess and all that.

This CD helped me through my ‘04 post-election suicidal urges, along with the scathing anger (and horrificly accurate perspectives) of Trent Reznor.

Jay, gotta say, you’ve been on a roll today….

Among the things that make this country so fantastic.

Democracy. Not necessarily invented here, but a damn good model for all its flaws.

Work Ethic. Despite a few bad apples, most people around this country want to work hard. Sometimes they don’t know how, or where to go to do so. But they want to work smart, and work hard.

Our Military. Smartest, bravest, tough souls around. Yeah, there’s wasteful spending in the budget. But the people are fantastic.

Our Companies. Small and large. Sometimes led astray by errant managers. But innovative, creative, competitive, and helping build our prosperity.

Discourse. People will argue. But it stays mostly civil. And when tempers flare, we still remember we’re all Americans.

And damn good, I mean really good, music. Jazz, bluegrass, rock and roll.

God I love this country.

Can’t wait to hit my Thanksgiving trail through New Orleans to Austin. Weeehaaa!

Back in the 80s I’d record the programs onto cassette and mail them to my dad, who shared a love of Celtic/Bluegrass with me. Lo, he has been gone for 22 years now.

So I must confess, it has bittersweet memories for me. But sometimes the pain and heartache feels good. At least it makes me feel alive.

It’s too bad that the Friday afternoon karma that is created on this blog by the music can’t overcome all the other trash that we all think is SO important in our lives that it consumes the other 166 hours of our existance on this planet. If it did, then maybe this world would be a saner place. There IS room for rational thought because none of us are right all the time but we have all come to live in a world that is so ideologically divided upon who IS right and who is wrong which is delineated upon political lines by the media that we are destroying ourselves. And our leaders and the media are letting us do it to their benefit adn our detriment. Perhaps it is naieve and utopian to think that the people (us) have the answer to our problems but one thing is for sure; our leaders andour media have failed us. It doesn’t matter which party one subscribes to, they have let us down. Can we ever come together? That answer lies within all of us. But, at least we agree upon the music.

Our Irish tour guide was incredible. Began study of Irish (none of the Irish with whom we spoke referred to it as Gaelic and corrected those who did) while a youngster in school, then took the advanced courses and regularly switched between English and Irish. At times seemed to pause while he considered a good English translation. Said revised curriculums (I refuse to do the Latin nominative plural thingie for select words) mean few kids will grow to adulthood speaking Irish. What a shame for a nation.

Anyhow, wondered about some of the words used by Enya and came across this:

On her latest album, Amarantine, Enya sings in Japanese and Loxian, a language invented by Roma Ryan. A number of Enya’s songs are sung entirely in Irish or Latin, while most of her songs are sung in English. Enya has also sung songs written entirely or partially in Welsh, Spanish, French and even languages created by J. R. R. Tolkien. Enya has performed songs relating to J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, including 1991’s “Lothlórien” (instrumental), 2001’s “May It Be” (sung in English and Quenya), and “Aníron” (in Sindarin)—the last two which she composed appearing on the soundtrack of Peter Jackson’s movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Fred’s AC/DC brought a smile to my face. I was taking care of my three-year old niece yesterday and today. She brought her little toy guitar.

I had her emulating Angus Young’s on-stage antics. She was pretty good with the foot movement, head movement, closed eyes, mouth opened. Couldn’t master the duck walk no matter how many times I showed her. She tried though.

Too cute!

Marines are about the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever witnessed. They treat their service as if it was a cult, plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making themselves up to look like insane fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths, worshiping their Commandant almost as if he was a God, and making weird noises like a band of savages. They’ll fight like rabid dogs at the drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action, and are the cockiest SOBs I have ever known. Most have the foulest mouths and drink well beyond man’s normal limits, but their high spirits and sense of brotherhood set them apart and, generally speaking, the United States Marines I’ve come in contact with are the most professional soldiers and finest men I have had the pleasure to meet.

Meanwhile, the question of who is conducting the security screening has generated some attention. U.S. Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., ranking Republican on the House transportation committee, wrote a memo to airports earlier this month asking them to consider converting their security screening from TSA screeners to a certified private screening program.

A city councilor in Macon, Erick Erickson, said he has asked the Macon city attorney to begin looking into privatization of airport security at Macon’s Middle Georgia Regional Airport, “to get beyond the stigma of what the TSA is presently doing and frankly, in competition with Hartsfield-Jackson (International) Airport, it’s a unique selling point to be able to tell people you can bypass TSA by flying out of Macon.”

Ok, people are angry about the screening procedures, and the option offered by someone on the House Committee that oversees that kind of stuff is to opt out of TSA??

[...]TSA spokesman Allen noted that all commercial airports are regulated by TSA, “whether the actual screening is performed by TSA officers or private companies. TSA sets the security standards that must be followed, including the use of enhanced pat-downs and imaging technology, if installed at the airport.”

Even if airports opt out of having federal screeners, the private companies that replace them will still have to follow TSA protocol. What kind of solution would that be? I guess you can advertise it as a non-federal groping and the traveling public will approve. The things that pass as logical thinking nowadays.

Have you seen this site yet?

We are writing to urge you to stand firm against those who would put politics ahead of their country.

For the fiscal health of our nation and the well-being of our fellow citizens, we ask that you allow tax cuts on incomes over $1,000,000 to expire at the end of this year as scheduled.

We make this request as loyal citizens who now or in the past earned an income of $1,000,000 per year or more.

We have done very well over the last several years. Now, during our nation’s moment of need, we are eager to do our fair share. We don’t need more tax cuts, and we understand that cutting our taxes will increase the deficit and the debt burden carried by other taxpayers. The country needs to meet its financial obligations in a just and responsible way.

Letting tax cuts for incomes over $1,000,000 expire, is an important step in that direction.

Sincerely,

Signed by 45 millionaires…

Do you think for one moment that most of the inventions of the past 200 years would have happened if the people inventing them didn’t think they’d be getting rich off them? ‘Intactivists’ to San Francisco: Ban circumcision

Schofield and like-minded advocates who call themselves “intactivists” seek to make it “unlawful to circumcise, excise, cut, or mutilate the whole or any part of the foreskin, testicles, or penis” of anyone 17 or younger in San Francisco.

“It’s up to the choice of the individual — not the parents, society or religion,” Schofield said. “This is a choice for body integrity. Just as females are protected from having a drop of blood drawn from their genitals, baby boys deserve the same protection.”

Intactivists also say:

– Circumcisions are not medically necessary and violate the child’s body.

– It requires a medical procedure, which carries risk of complications and pain.

– Foreskins are part of the natural body to help protect the penis.

People in Frisco have wa-a-ay too much idle time on their hands.

It makes me wonder, though, why you would refer to them as “pikers”? Why not just refer to them as millionaires, or even Americans? I’m glad to see that some of this nation’s wealthy appreciate the fact that they would not have that wealth without this nation in the form that it was in when they made their money and are therefore willing to pay a little to make sure it has a chance of staying that way. Of course, they could always set up shop in some place like Venezuela, etc., and have a go at it if they choose. By the way, that was also great work by our US government in getting all those crooks with their accounts at UBS to pay up. I saw that the IRS averaged about $200,000 from each of the thousands that came forward to settle up their past due tax bills. Now, I wish the FBI success in going after those on Wall Street that don’t like playing by the rules to get rich and then have the nerve to whine about paying taxes to boot. SoCo,

I might take that group’s letter a little more seriously if they weren’t so dishonest in the “things you should know” section. Anytime somebody spouts off those marginal tax rates without also giving you the effective tax rates it’s a deliberate effort to mislead.

Jay

I don’t know, RW. As I posted the other day, the effective tax rate for the top 0.1 percent of taxpayers — roughly those with annual incomes of 6 million or above — averaged 22 percent. And of course, most of that income — in some cases all of it — isn’t subject to payroll taxes.

I don’t know about you, but MY effective tax rate — payroll taxes included — is higher than that.

SoCo, you need new glasses. CA, NY, MA, DC, WA, OR. Those are NOT left leaning to right leaning states. They are as blue as blue can be. Have you ever looked at an electoral map?

No sir, you need to be complete in your assertion. You listed 5 states and DC, when there are 12 states and DC represented on that list. NY and CA make up the majority of that list, but you forgot OH, PA, WY, TX, and UT. That’s why I said, ” If you look at the places where most of them reside, they represent everything from left-leaning to right-leaning states.” The list is not all left leaning states, nor is it all right-leaning states. It’s a mixture of the two. And if you check the latest electoral map, it’s almost all red, as many of your conservative colleagues like to point out.

I can understand your point. For someone like me, I wouldn’t know my effective tax rate from a hole in the ground. :)

Maybe it’s a ploy… Maybe it’s something to start a conversation… I just see it as a message different from what you hear from people who seem to know what the top 2% want or think. I’m not sure if those on the list would be top 2%, 5% or 10%, but I find it interesting.

Well, you’d have to compare today’s effective rates to the earlier effective tax rates, and I’m not sure what those were or how to find them. But looking at the tax tables, I don’t think they’re as low as you might suspect.

Tax increases would be a whole lot easier to accept if those that think that tax rates must be raised would also acknowledge that very painful spending cuts must occur. But there is never even discussion of this. Just raising taxes will not save this country and our way of life even if we modify our way of life to a much more modest level. Quite frankly we plain don’t have the tax base to support our wants anymore. The real tax base for supporting this country comes from the middle class and the middle class is dying. The trifecta of “Sacred Cows” (Medicare, SSN and Defense) must be addressed and they must be cut. The Obama Healthcare bill only increased the deficit spending and did nothing to alleviate the spending from medicare (except to make his cronies in the insurance industry richer). From my own personnal experience, we have a severe problem when a person can come into an emergency room with a medicaid card (state provided) who wants her son’s finger looked at because he is having trouble playing an electronic game (even while he is playing the game in the waiting room and his mother is talking on an I-Phone). We have lost control of the programs that we are spending trillions on and we must reign them in or we are finished. The government has proven again and again that it is not an efffective administrative organization. It is an excellent creator of programs but it cannot handle them once they are in existance and waste and abuse is rampant. If you want to see evidence of abuse of programs, go to the grocery and observe what people with foodstamps buy. It will make you sick.

I agree with you on that. I don’t think any of the regulars here have said they wanted taxes to go up and not have any cuts in spending. I think there’s a consensus that it will take both of those to happen for us to gain solid fiscal footing. I’m just tired of the back and forth and wish congress would act now. Had they acted years ago along that path, our debt probably wouldn’t be nearly as high as it is now.

Yes, food is right there with music. Too bad I can’t enjoy food like I used to, unless I cared to weigh 200 lbs. Nevertheless, I remember it well! No problem with music though – thank God!

I want to recommend two movies to you – what is it with movies between us? :-)

Anyway, one is a sleeper – a little avant garde – made in 1996 and starring Isabella Rossellini and Stanley Tucci called “Big Night.” The gist of the movie is that Louis Primer is coming to a dinner in a restaurant – to spur on business – and so an elaborate meal, of many courses, is cooked for him. The preparation itself was an act of love – not for Primer – but for the food itself and what it could be created to be – and I am sure for the communion possibilities with others through the food. (My dear Frenchborn husband exhibited a love in cooking when he sometimes created a dish at home. It was in his blood, I do believe.)

The other film is a recent Italian film starring Tilda Swinton, called “Lo sono l’amore” or “I am love.” Swinton’s character, long repressed, falls in love with the food dishes a man she is falling in love with prepares. It is an exquisitely filmed movie. Very little dialogue. Mostly images and some of pure delight. Including the food.

Well, goodbye for now – I want to watch my favorite British comedy on the telly.

For those interested in reading more on this, there’s an excellent review in the New York Law School Journal of Human Rights by DU Rosenthal called “When K-9s Cause Chaos” (volume 11, pp. 279-310, 1994).

Besides racial concerns, the main area in which law enforcement’s use of K-9 dogs has been subject to scrutiny is allegations of excessive and unreasonable use of force. A review of the literature reveals only one suspect killed by a K-9 dog. In this case the courts concluded that because the K-9 dog was used appropriately, the incident did not constitute excessive, unreasonable, or deadly use of force.” Remember, if you are a black man getting mauled by a K-9, DO NOT fight back. HEY! Something for the left-wingers to celebrate.

Worldwide emissions of carbon dioxide, widely blamed as the chief cause of global warming, dropped from 2008 to 2009, largely because of the global economic slowdown, according to a study released Sunday. It was the first decline since the late 1990s.–USAToday

Sonny might get a little more benefit of the doubt, if not for Oakey Woods, the $100K personal tax break, etc.

If someone with no experience takes over a new job that had been vacated by someone that had been in that job for say twenty years before retiring, then proclaiming that the new person is making less than the retired person is not exactly a revelation. Also, if that vacated job was proclaimed to be left vacated due to attrition and to save money for us taxpayers only to be filled by the good old boys, I don’t see that as falling in line with the Republican mantra of smaller government. Looks more like back scratching at the taxpayer’s expense to me. It also looks a little hypocritical. Or perhaps that should be a lot hypocritical given that folks like teachers have been called on over and over to bite the bullet and do without at the expense of our children’s educations. So, blah blah blah. Make more excuses for the Republicans. I’m certainly used to hearing it.

(I’ve been to the sixth floor in Dallas. I think Oswald certainly could have performed the deed from there, and likely was the only shooter. But was he part of something much bigger? Given what happened during his perp walk, we’ll never really know for certain, I guess.)

Stands,
I’ll be going to Dallas sometime after the first of the year and I’m going to check out the Plaza myself. Given that the trees have had 47 years to grow I might not be able to see much, but as an old Navy shooter, I want to check it out. I agree that Oswald could have done it, but a downhill target moving away from you is a hard target to hit and something you really couldn’t calibrate your scope for or practice shoot. Oswald was either a true Daniea Boone, or he wasn’t the only shooter.
But I will admit that with all of the theories out there, none seem to fit.

Did you see the “Manchurian Candidate” theory about Sirhan Sirhan being brained washed to perform the assassination? Pretty good…

But again, we will never know….
