I’ve been wanting to post something by Rosie Ledet and the Zydeco Playboys for a long time, but I’ve had a hard time finding a video of suitable quality. The videos posted on Youtube are all taken by amateurs from live performances, and the sound and image quality are often lacking.
This one, though, comes closer than any other to capturing her voice, musicianship and personality, an authentic taste of Louisiana and Americana. (If you buy her CDs, you’ll also find she has a hilariously bawdy sense of humor.)

didn’t mean to send his thing across the pond. back to message. no question this music puts one on the mood for some boiled crawfish, hush puppies and maybe a mufalatta (sp?), all washed down with some Abita Turbo Dog or Dixie lager, but somebody slap an injunction on those sill old white NYers tryin to keep time to the zydeco beat. god bless ‘em, I can think of worse ways to spend an evening – and I back in the 90’s I did my share of white man boogie at Blind Willie’s. so, josef, how do you say “Mulligan” in cajun (Budreaux or Tibbedeaux)?

paleo, there is no drummer, either alive or dead, like Keith Moon. He was one of a kind and he was much better than all the rest (either resperating or not). Moon created his own music, which just so happened to coincide with what the rest of the Who was doing. I have listened to all kinds of music for many, many years and I have never heard anything like Moon in the percussion department. He was a “sloppy” drummer indeed.

Pogo, I can’t remember where I saw the bit, maybe VH-1 or some Who documentary, but either Townsend or Daltrey was commenting on how Moon played the “leads” and Townsend and Entwistle were “the rhythm section”. as I said, I was more of a Beatlers, Stones and Zeppelin guy, but the Overture from Tommy is on my iPod forever.

This song pretty much fits any theme.
Well, we live in a trailer
at the edge of town
You never see us
’cause we don’t come around.
We got twenty five rifles
just to keep
the population down.
But we need you now,
and that’s why
I’m hangin’ ’round.
So you be good to me
and I’ll be good to you,
And in this land of conditions
I’m not above suspicion
I won’t attack you,
but I won’t back you.
Well, it’s so good to be here,
asleep on your lawn.
Remember your guard dog?
Well, I’m afraid
that he’s gone.
It was such a drag
to hear him
whining all night long.
Yes, that was me with the doves,
setting them free
near the factory
Where you built your computer,
love.
I hope you get the connection,
’cause I can’t take
the rejection
I won’t deceive you,
I just don’t believe you.
Well, I’m a barrel of laughs,
with my carbine on
I keep ‘em hoppin’,
till my ammunition’s gone.
But I’m still not happy,
I feel like
there’s something wrong.
I got the revolution blues,
I see bloody fountains,
And ten million dune buggies
comin’ down the mountains.
Well, I hear that Laurel Canyon
is full of famous stars,
But I hate them worse than lepers
and I’ll kill them
in their cars.

But now he’s preachin’
Just to buy jellyroll
Well, he calls that religion
Yes, he calls that religion
Well, he calls that religion
But I know he’s goin’ to hell when he dies
It was at a church last night
Had desire to be
The old preacher
Was tryin’ to take my wife from me
Oh, he call that religion
Yes, he call that religion
Well, he called that religion
I know he’s goin’ to hell when he dies
Preacher always
He was a mighty true man
He gives his commence
And he couldn’t understand
Well, he calls that religion
Yes, he called that religion
Well, he called that religion
I know he goin’ to hell when he dies
(guitar & fiddle)
‘Oh yes, he calls that religion’
He will swear he’s keepin’
God’s command
Have women fussin’ ‘n fightin’
All over land
And then he call that religion
Well, he calls that religion
Well, he called that religion
But I know he’s goin’ to hell when he dies
Therein the people
Stopped goin’ to church
They know that preacher
Was tryin-a do too much
But still he called that religion
Still, he called that religion
Well, he called that religion
But I know he’s goin’ to hell when he dies
Old Deacon Jones
He was a preachin’ King
They caught him ’round the house
Tryin-a shake that thing
Oh, he called that religion
Yes, he called that religion
Well, he called that religion
But I know he goin’ to hell when he dies
‘Oh yeah, he calls that religion’.
