Obama’s supposed ‘$200 million-a-day trip to India’ a case study in pathological lunacy

UPDATE, from ABC NEWS:

The Pentagon did not mince words in dismissing as “absolutely absurd” and “comical” media reports from Indian news outlets that the US Navy was sending 34 warships off the coast of Mumbai as part of the security preparations for President Obama’s upcoming trip to India.

Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell … told reporters he was making an exception to the practice of not discussing presidential security details to shoot down the reports.

“I will take the liberty this time of dismissing as absolutely absurd this notion that somehow we were deploying 10 percent of the Navy — some 34 ships and an aircraft carrier — in support of the president’s trip to Asia,” said Morrell at today’s Pentagon briefing. “That’s just comical. Nothing close to that is being done.”

—————————–

Credibility no longer matters. Truth no longer matters.

And shame? Shame at being caught selling ridiculous falsehoods and lies? Hah!

Right-wing bloggers, media and politicians have seized on a report on an Indian Internet site, supposedly based on an anonymous estimate from an Indian government official, that President Obama will be spending $200 million a day on his India trip.

Now think about the impossibility of that. Two hundred million bucks a day? As Factcheck.org points out, the entire U.S. war effort in Afghanistan — where we have to arm, equip and provision roughly 100,000 troops in a hostile, barren environment — costs us $190 million a day. The claim is simply too ridiculous to be contemplated, let alone believed.

Yet as the clip above from Fox Business News demonstrates, the absurdity quickly became fuel for the vast right-wing outrage machine. (My favorite part above is where the outraged host, the genius Eric Bolling, insists: “I will tell you unequivocably, I am not making this up, this has been reported, go to the Internet, go take a look.” Really, they gave this guy a microphone and TV time?)

Drudge picked it up. Sean Hannity jumped in on it. Rush Limbaugh has been spreading the meme. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann went on CNN to condemn the expenditure. And the blogosphere? Oh the lunacy!

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. If you’re willing to believe that Obama is a Kenyan Marxist-fascist-anticolonialist black racist who hates America and plots its destruction, what won’t you believe.

But seriously people….

The troops in the wars are not renting the Taj-Majal for accomodations, and they are not eating lavish breakfast lunch and dinner. They are not using AFOne to transport them, and dont have 100 secret service agents, and dont have to pay the Indian govt for security. So for you to say that this is not possible is uneducated and just as bad as the right assuming anything else. The bottom line is that the President should disclose the expense and let the American people make a judgement, the problem is that as everything else there is ZERO transparency in what goes on in there. He wasn’t called a Kenyan marxist. I can’t believe how people seize upon the race card just because they are uniformed. Perhaps you are intentionally trying to stir up racial hatred by reporting things that you know to be false. President Obama was called a KEYNESIAN marxist. This is in regards to his ECONOMIC policy, not his RACE. John Maynard Keyes was a British economist who published his theories in a book entitled “The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money” in 1936. Please research some “facts” first before trying to stir up racial unrest. If I don’t see my comment, I won’t be surprised. People have a hard time dealing with facts these days.

In light of the just released unemployment data is it really appropriate for our president to take such a trip no matter what the cost? People are suffering and cutting back and our president who claims he shares our pain takes a trip to see a festival of lights into a very unstable area which will definately cost just for his protection alone. I for one am not taking extavagant trips because of the economic situation. Should he? And please spare me what Bush did. I do believe he spent way too much but even still, Barack does not get a free pass just because former Presidents spent way to much money. haha – peadawg calling someone else hard-headed… hahaha

If, as you say, the GOP was elected to not compromise, then didn’t you just vote to shut down government for 2 yrs.

Jay B,

Since you’re the supposed newsman around here perhaps you’d like to provide us some facts.

“Really, they gave this guy a microphone and TV time?”

They give you the keys to this blog to spew your one sided garbage every day, Jay. What’s the difference?

Jay,

“Because the only place I’ve seen those numbers is that same Indian website reporting the $200 million a day number.”

I’ve posted links to both Bush’s trip to London in 2003m and Obama’s in 2009, which put their entourages at 700 and 500 respectively.

To say that this trip has 6 times the number appears patently false.

How much did it cost? Please find out and confirm the number was less than $200 million before ranting. US pres contrasts with UK PM David Cameron who files coach.

And even the Daily Mail story uses as its sole source that Indian website.

Of course, it doesn’t mean the numbers are wrong. Maybe they’re right. But I’d just feel a lot better about using them if they could be confirmed through these newspaper accounts that RW has read.

” the GOP was voted in on the economy – people just want it fixed.” – Exactly. They don’t think Obama’s doing a good job so we’re giving a GOP another shot. If the Dems block everything the GOP passes and nothing gets better…good luck in 2012.

“From your posts, it seems to me that you are one that demands personal responsibility” – and making everyones’s premiums go up so you’re covered it personal responsibility??? Really?
