I’ve been hesitant to make too much of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s statement a few days ago that “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” It seemed over the top, like something McConnell said off the cuff, in the heat of battle, and probably regretted.
Surely it was more important to McConnell as a public servant to get millions of Americans working again, or to restore the nation’s financial health, or to stop Iran from getting the bomb. Surely working toward those and other national goals took priority over trying to defeat Obama, especially in difficult times such as these.
Silly, silly me.
“Over the past week, some have said it was indelicate of me to suggest that our top political priority over the next two years should be to deny President Obama a second term in office,” the Senate Republican leader plans to tell the conservative Heritage Foundation, according to excerpts of his speech provided to POLITICO.
“But the fact is, if our primary legislative goals are to repeal and replace the health spending bill; to end the bailouts; cut spending; and shrink the size and scope of government, the only way to do all these things is to put someone in the White House who won’t veto any of these things,” the Kentucky Republican will say. “We can hope the president will start listening to the electorate after Tuesday’s election. But we can’t plan on it.”
McConnell isn’t some talk-radio host trying to work his audience into a lather. He’s not a behind-the-scenes political operative or consultant plotting the next election. He’s the Senate minority leader, with an obligation to govern that ought to transcend partisan goals.
For that reason, it means something when a person in his position embraces partisan gain over all else, however he may try to justify it to himself and others. In fact, it’s hard to hear his statement as anything but a declaration of all-out partisan war, damn the consequences.
For example, given the choice of supporting something that was good for the country, but would also benefit Barack Obama politically, what would McConnell do? If you take him at his word — and I guess we have to, since he has chosen to repeat it for emphasis — you at least have to wonder.
I just can’t imagine such a bald assertion of partisan gain over policy at any other time from such a prominent source. Tom Daschle in 2002, saying “the single most important thing we want to achieve is beating George Bush?” Unthinkable, because then as now, the country had bigger things on its plate. Even Bob Dole and Newt Gingrich, at the height of political acrimony with Bill Clinton, didn’t publicly commit themselves to Clinton’s political destruction as their primary goal.
The good news is, at least we know where we stand.

“Dear JDW @ 9:06, you err. You assume that the Dow is like all leftists, “cult oriented” and that it believes people cause economies to prosper or collapse. In truth the Dow is logical, and it believes economic policies cause economies to prosper or collapse.”
Actually Roger, after 8 years as an investment banker, raising more than $50 million in VC funds and investing for over 30 years I am quite sure the DOW is no where near logical….
In fact the ONLY reason it moves on way or another is demand vs. supply and quite often that demand is based on illogical thoughts by those doing the buying and selling or outright manipulation by those with the ability to move the needle.
BTW I am not a Leftist…just smart enough to know that the BS the Republicans have been feeding us for 30 years is just that BS. But in all fairness I must admit I did not catch on until the mid 90’s so there is hope other will notice.

Such hypocrisy and grasping for straws. Of course McConnell wants Obama out of office and replaced with a Republican. He’s a Republican and its politics. “Supporting something that was good for the country, but would also benefit Obama politically.” The left can’t accept that the majority rejected Obama’s agenda and will continue to do so because the majority of Americans expect them to. “Elections have consequences”.

Today’s question from the Rhetorical Question of the Day file.
Why is mystery meat #217 so tormented by me?
“But the fact is, if our primary legislative goals are to repeal and replace the health spending bill; to end the bailouts; cut spending; and shrink the size and scope of government, the only way to do all these things is to put someone in the White House who won’t veto any of these things,”
SHRINK the size and scope of government???
If not such an inveterate liar, the man would be comedic.
Mr. McConnell needs to make such proclamations of April 1st and April 1st only.
The cons have EXPLODED the size and scope of government every chance they’ve had – from Ronnie to George. A thirty year unbroken track record of doing so and lying about it.
They are as incompetent and deadly a lot as is imaginable.
And they cloak it in one of their many moronic slogans – fiscal conservatives.
But the Republirubes continue to swallow it hook, line and sinker.
So welcome to the new paradigm of MORE Republican socialism and MORE Republican government spending and MORE Republican fiscal irresponsibility…

No problem. These sorts of things come up regularly – usually when one side wants to demonstrate how wasteful the other side’s person is. The costs that would have been incurred anyhow are tough to nail down, but the direct costs – lodging, entertainment, are easier.

Ken 9:36: “’m calling out the AJC and YOU JAY BOOKMAN. Why is it so hard for the media to accept that most of this country does NOT lean left and embrace a humanistic and relativistic world view?”
Ken, why do you speak such nonsense? Don’t you realize that it is YOUR side that is “relativistic” and “humanistic” in a dangerous, heretical way?
But sadly, our friend Ken here has a point, in a way. The Democrat party is terrified to embrace a radical critique of humanism and relativism and to incorporate it into its philosophy, even though that would be a revitalizing element. Instead, it timidly tries to defend an approach of “good sense” while it gets trounced by an ideology that knows how to marshal the romanticism of the counter-intuitive shrewdly combined with a demagogic appeal to the seemingly intuitive appeal of ‘the market’ as a shibboleth. To this the Democrats have no answer that they can be proud of, hence their misery.

It’s partisan gain if he’s saying he wants the GOP to win no matter what. But that’s not what he’s saying. Instead, he’s saying he wants conservative economic principles to win out, and Obama is directly in the way of that. So the guy is sticking to his principles. I think it says a lot about you and the left that you find it a horrible thing that he would rather stick to his principles than compromise them by agreeing to Obama’s principles (which the American people seem to disagree with, or did you not see the election results?).
The real question is will these guys truly stick with their principles, or will they fold when doing such might endanger their power and control?

A substantial portion of Crossroads GPS’ money came from a small circle of extremely wealthy Wall Street hedge fund and private equity moguls, according to GOP fundraising sources who spoke with NBC News on condition of anonymity. These donors have been bitterly opposed to a proposal by congressional Democrats — and endorsed by the Obama administration — to increase the tax rates on compensation that hedge funds pay their partners, the sources said.
I thought the so-called tea party was against these private equity moguls and hedge fund managers.

Hmm..Don;t know how to upload spreadsheets in blogs…Guess we could start by looking at the room rates The hotel he is staying at averages for “normal” rooms $275/night…x approx 800 rooms= $220,000/night x 3 = $660,000, food has got to AT least that…So we ‘re at $1,200,000. Cost to fly 3000 people at say $1000RT= $3,000,000, AND I have no clue what 34 warships, 40 cars, and all the advance team costs would be…So not even counting any of that…I have got a minimum cost of $4.2 million…ALL because Obama wants to go see India’s Festival of Lights Celebration. Heck of an expensive weekend trip when the country is so far in debt!

Um, Jay, this is kind of ridiculous. He’s right. They can’t pass their legislation as long as there’s a WH veto.
Of note, Jim Demint and Boehner have said it is not the top priority. But, if Obama is going to veto everything they pass, then what’s the point.
I suspect they will try to work on passing legislation together, but Obama is so liberal, there’s probably little overlap. So small ball for 2 years. Even though there are big things to be done. See El Erian’s column in WaPo the other day.

Number of posts questioning “why India” or implying the trip’s a boondoggle.
Okay, then –
Remember that hotel in India jihadists attacked and tortured and killed the guests? Pres Obama’s staying there. Talk about a cojone statement.
But now for question time:
Which countries in the region have nukes?
Of those, which countries have gone to war in the last few decades?
Of those, which countries have gone to war several times?
Which of those came close to launching their nukes at the other country?
Answer: India and Pakistan
And, if the nightmare scenario of a jihadist Taliban taking over Pakistan actually happened, would we maybe want another nuke country in the region as an ally? And if Pakistan and India did go to war again, and if it escalated, whose victory would serve our national interests?
Sorry if this sounds condescending, @@, but dang – you’d think the critics would be cheering his trip. Given those considerations, $200 million a day is a bargain.

According to the WSJ 45% of Americans receive government benefits, including social security, Medicare and other programs. That means that at least some people making comments here are probably on the dole. Republicans will not have enough political pull to repeal healthcare during this term. By 2012, many of you will be receiving benefits from the healthcare bill. I’m betting that by then you will be as eager to give up those benefits as people are to give up Medicare and social security now.
I receive no gov’t benefits and am in the highest tax bracket. I believe in many of Obama’s policies, including healthcare despite the fact it may cost me more. Unfortunately, while Repubs have been great about cutting taxes, they increased spending as much as the Dems. But instead of spending money fixing real problems like healthcare and education, they blew it on imaginary problems like the War in Iraq and programs that get votes like the prescription drug plan. So now will still have the same real problems but are in debt.
Have the decency to respect Obama for taking the unpopular road to fix real problems rather than kowtowing to capricious voters in order to keep his job. Face the facts. Our taxes will need to increase; we will need to cut programs until we balance the books. Unfortunately that takes long-term discipline, which few voters seem to have.

What is good for the country is to be rid of Obama, Pelosi, Reid and all liberal socialist morons in elected office! Socialism does not, has never worked anywhere! Ask Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, all the Euro Socialists, even China! In China it only gives the false look of success because they have begun to ingrain capitalism and private success into the system! CAPITALISM WORKS!

Amvet ..your not very bright…
Perhaps, but at least I have some mastery of standard, written English.
Not that I’m really curious, but I wonder what I wrote that got you to get your panties in a wad and caused you to lose all self-discipline and lash out with an unprovoked personal insult.
Stay classy, d…

Larry – who to believe, Deal’s Atty or the AJC news? I can’t apparently post the links and other stuff.

Hopefully, Obama has figured out how to level the playing field with India in order to stem the tide of American jobs being exported there and the Indian workers being imported here. If he isn’t prepared to address those issues his trip will be just a boondoggle that we can ill afford.

Bosch –
Here are graphs and tables… http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/100xx/doc10014/Chapter1.5.1.shtml
We’re looking at the largest percent of GDP as debt since World War Two thanks the recent fiscal policy under the Dems. (And no I’m not happy with the direction the GOP was headed with spending either).
P.S. Do your own homework next time.

Sid – 2012 is an eternity in politics. Who knows how things will shape up by then….. but there’s a decent chance Obama will lose. But not against Palin, and probably not against Huckabee.
I think he could lose against Romney or Mitch Daniels. Maybe Pawlenty too.

With 3000 people with him and 34 warships he should be able to bring all the jobs he demands back here. All he has to say is, “this is a stick up. Give me your jobs or 34 warships will fire”. Libs will love him.

Totally agree JM. I do not want Palin and Huckabee is to far right christian and would not get the independent vote. I like the others and keep an eye on Rubio. This poll does show that he has problems. The polls before had him beating anyone and everyone.

You Asked 10:02: “Boy I can just smell all the progressive love and tolerance following this election!”
Since when does wanting to smash the Tea Party’s dreams to bits have anything to do with “love and tolerance” ?
What if it comes from a militant fondness for the sword? Would you warm to it then?

Paul, The dollar has been devalued 25% since the Fed cranked up the printing presses to cover the bailouts. It costs more in American $ to do anything internationally today. (I only wish it was all sarcasm)

Unfortunately, politicians will sell their soul to obtain &/or retain power. Very few of them consider the long-term health of our nation. Whether you’re on the right, left, or middle, I hope that all of us w/ a brain can agree that very few members of our political class possess integrity. Look at Crist in Florida; as soon as his power was endangered, he jumped out of the Republican primary, changed his tune, an ran as an independent–a de facto Democrat. Look at Arlen Specter–started off as a Democrat–when the political winds shifted he became a Republican, and when the winds shifted again–walla! He’s a Democrat.
The reality is politicians w/ integrity are unelectable statewide or national elections b/c the electorate is short-sighted and stupid. These snake oil salesmen who tell people what they want to hear (which is not the truth) always trounce those who speak the truth.
Our only remedy for this is term limits. Is there any person out there who disagrees my comment?
