Remember that old Pace Picante commercial?
“This stuff’s made in New York City?”
That’s how I think of the Felice Brothers. “They’re from New York City? Really? Because they sure don’t sound or play like New York City.”
I’ve never had the chance to see them in person, but they’re playing next Saturday at the Earl in East Atlanta.
If you like what you hear, you might want to stop on by. And if you don’t, well, don’t. Because I sure don’t want to make things complicated on a beautiful Friday afternoon like this….
An Atlanta blog with a little bit of opinion about a whole lot of things

This is John D’s version of Tobacco Road. His lyrics were changed, when it was recorded by others. His version is a bit harder hitting, lyrically.

There a very good reason you made that connection with Tony Joe White…and thanks for the song!
The name Redbone itself is a joking reference to a Cajun term for a mixed-race person (”half-breed”), the band’s members being of mixed blood ancestry.[1] The band referenced Cajun and New Orleans culture many times in their lyrics and performing style. Pat and Lolly had previously performed and recorded under the stage surname Vegas, in part to downplay the Latin American association of their birth surname, Vasquez. According to Patrick Vasquez, it was Jimi Hendrix – himself part Native American – who talked the musicians into forming an all-Native American rock group and so they signed as the band “Redbone” to Epic Records in 1969.[2] The band then consisted of Patrick Vasquez, Lolly Vasquez, Peter DePoe and Anthony “Tony” Bellamy. Their debut album “Redbone” was released in 1970.[2]

When I was in college there was a guy who had come up to the Northwest from Down Home to do a study of Sasquatch and the Loup Garou…we got a chuckle when we both told about having a rough and rowdy cousin that we nicknamede Loup Garou…! One of his findings was that the story is essentially the same in the Northwestern Indian and Choctaw-Chitimacha folk tales…another of our buddies was a Choctaw who had come to the Northwest to study languages of some of the Puget Sound nations which are closely related to Choctaw…
