U.S. Rep. John Boehner
John Boehner, who is likely to become the next speaker of the House, went on Sean Hannity’s radio show Wednesday to offer a preview of what to expect:
“This is not a time for compromise, and I can tell you that we will not compromise on our principles,” Boehner said….
As for Obama’s own agenda, Boehner promised, “We’re going to do everything – and I mean everything we can do – to kill it, stop it, slow it down, whatever we can.”
Meanwhile, according to a newly released Bloomberg poll:

Four out of five Americans want compromise. The Republicans don’t dare even entertain compromise. This is playing right to Obama’s strength. He will come across as calm, rational and reasonable. The Republicans will either come across as angry and aggressive, or they will deeply disappoint their own base.
Obama will also have history on his side. As National Journal points out, presidents who lose control of Congress in their first midterms tend to gain a political advantage:
“It’s occurred three times in the past 100 years, and in each case the minority party that took control watched the supposedly vanquished president win reelection just two years later. First, Harry Truman in 1948 (after losing 55 House and 13 Senate seats in 1946); second, Dwight Eisenhower in 1956 (after losing 18 House and two Senate seats in 1954, creating Democratic majorities that would last in the Senate until 1980 and in the House until 1994); and finally, Bill Clinton in 1996 (after losing 54 House and eight Senate seats in 1994).”

Did anyone expect a different result from a Bloomberg poll?
“Compromise” is much easier when you don’t have principles.

You Lefties are soooo entertaining. Face it, your party is just like mine. Alone, you don’t not have enough votes to win. It takes the rational middle to produce the winner. They see what Obama has done. They will make their voices heard next week. They are not stupid, they don’t need your or my guidance. They like the Right are willing to stop Obama now, then put him out to pasture in 2012. Geez, you guys are sore losers and the results aren’t even in yet! But, I do like the way you gave up so soon.

jm: “left wing – I didn’t say our culture was drifting leftward. But our government is.”
Ok, I see. Leaving aside that though there does seem to be a certain natural progression towards collectivization historically, as you say, for which certain qualifications need to be made, how can you argue that the US government has drifted leftward over the past 50 years? Or the UK for that matter? That’s simply ludicrous. During the Kennedy administration, for ex., we had top tax rates that more closely resembled Sweden at the time, or the UK, than the much lower rates we have today. And look at the philosophies of the Democratic administrations themselves. Clinton and Obama have had to bend over backward to prove their market-friendly, laissez-faire bona fides.

Things are beginning to look better for the Dems in 2010.
All the hype and bluster about the tidal wave of Repub economic gain appears to be overdone.
The Dems will win/retain Senate seats in CT, DE, NC, KY, WI, IL, NV, CA, WA, CO, WV. Mr. Crist will win in FL and Lisa Murkowski, both independets thrown out of the Republican party will win their states.
The House is a more uncertain, but appears to be going to Dems in that they will maintain a slight majority.

left wing 11:21 – over the long arc of history, the government has drifted leftward and bigger (which in my mind is a bit redundant, but whatever). There were obviously periods where conservatives fought back (Reagan). And yes, tax rates have varied a lot over the years. But spending hasn’t. It has only headed in one direction, drastically upward. And spending is what counts at the end of the day.

I believe the argument is that the gov. does not have to worry about profits or even going out of business..

jm, medicare does pay less than private but private uses that to keep reimbursment down. Doctors don’t set prices unless it’s something like cosmetic surgery. They take what is offered by medicare and the insurance companies. Reimbursement is often more difficult from private insurers as well, driving up the cost of healthcare as nurses are forced to wait on the phone “on hold” waiting to talk to the insurance co and seemingly endless “prior authorization” paperwork the ins co’s require.
I would agree that people would be more price sensitive if they paid more for what they got but that is, by definition, a reduction in benefits. You don’t need to go “private” to do that so I still don’t see the benefit of privatizing medicare.
While I agree that those who aren’t destitute should pay more, that’s called “means testing” and the right has been adamently opposed to it.

A new poll conducted by Hays Research confirms what we already intuitively know. Alaska U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller’s candidacy is in big trouble.
The percentage of Alaskans who feel either “somewhat negative” or “very negative” about Miller has skyrocketed in recent weeks to an astronomical 68 percent. Only 8 percent feel “somewhat negative” and the remainder, a jaw-dropping 60 percent, feel “very negative” about Miller as a candidate.

Regulated, but inter-state (cross-border) commerce in health insurance
Nonsense, jm, and if you knew anything about insurance, you wouldn’t be touting such a meaningless proposal. First of all, the only way to have “inter-state (cross-border) commerce in health insurance” is to have the federal government do the regulating. Is that what you Repubs reall want? Secondly, most major health insurance companies doing business in Georgia are also doing business in the other 49 states. Have you heard of some really, really cheap health insurance policies being offered in other states but not in Georgia? There are none.
It’s nonsense, and I sincerely hope for you sake and the sake of your family that you’re intelligent enough to know that, jm. Sounds good, smells awful.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/weigel/archive/2010/10/28/the-incredible-shrinking-joe-miller.aspx
Here in Georgia, however, when confronted with evidence of Republican Nathan Deal’s lies and misdeeds, support for Deal only grows stronger.
I’m beginning to think that Alaskans are made of sterner stuff than Georgians; that morality and honesty mean more to Alaskans than they mean to the people of Georgia.
Please, Georgia: Let’s follow the example set by Alaska. When a candidate has demonstrated that he is liar and a crook, we need to put principle over party and choose the better alternative. Alaskans know that they need to choose the best leader for Alaska – one who doesn’t lie to taxpayers or use his government position for self-enrichment.
Alaskans are saying NO to Joe Miller, now that they know what a liar he is. Alaskans are NOT just “holding their noses” and voting for Joe Miller anyway.
Do Georgians have the moral fortitude to say NO to Nathan Deal? For the sake of Georgia, I pray that we do.

I support means testing too. Another area significant waste is end of life care when the patient hasn’t made their wishes known to the family and ends up getting a ton of expensive, futile and unwanted care that deprives a person a natural death. I have seen this many times. This is a touchy subject but the original bill had a provision allowing a consultation with a patient’s physician regarding options at the end of life. Unfortunately, Sarah Palin labeled this physician consultation a “death panel” for political gain (two sentence’s after telling reporters to “stop making stuff up”). The provision was eventually dropped after frightening millions of elderly people and the lack of such a provision will deny the elderly an important discussion every older person should have with a medical professional and cost taxpayers billions. For this reason, I think Sarah Palin is despicable.

It depends on what is meant by “compromise.”
The republicans are where they are almost exclusively due to their opposition to Obama (and Pelosi and Reid) and his policies. Why mess with a good thing? A significant majority of Americans–perhaps and unprecedented majority–are behind the GOP because of its opposition to Obama. In other words, AMERICA opposes Obama and his policies, not just the GOP. If Obama continues to be true to himself–and I hope he does–this will do him no good in 2012.

Mick,
I don’t have time to read that here at work. All I need to see is the 13 trillion in debt continuing to grow.

They all say what the audience at the time wants to hear to get elected or re-elected. Ignore it.
And no, you can’t make predictions 2 years out. That would be like grabbing your raincoat for a weather forecase 2 weeks out.

this is 1994 all over. what the bomb-throwers and the Socialism-screamers can’t seem to understand is; if the GOP has a chance in 2012 it will be because it met Obama on the playing field and performed at a higher level. the “take the marbles an go home” or “no compromise” does not produce a victor, so much as it produces gridlock and greater public disdain. to wit (and I know this is about as useful as writing a letter to Santa Claus); the GOP needs to tell America what is “right” about it’s policies and agenda, as opposed to telling America (often emotionally) what is “wrong” with Obama and the liberal agenda. and it needs to back-up it’s “pitch” with performance/results. Obama was elected for a reason (and not because he is black, or a socialist). Obama was elected for the same reason Clinton was re-elected in ‘96. Obama (and Clinton in ‘96) didn’t fool anyone. Obama was elected because he was not Bush, and if the GOP takes control of the House next week, and makes the issue substance over form; dare I say, Americans will embrace the lesser of two evils (Obama) in 2012.

Now, whatever folks may think abour Barnes not being in the Obama camp they know he is a Democrat and Democrats are in the Obama
camp and Obama is NOT white!!!
Although this explains what we’re seeing in Georgia, I would hope we can rise above it. Is there something in the (ice) water up there in AK that allows folks to understand that Obama is not running for office in AK? That they don’t have to shoot their own state in the foot just to “send a message’ to Obama?

Big D, I encourage you to read Karl Rove’s very dispassionate opinon of Sarah Palin. again, you can hang your hopes in 2012 on “community organizer” soundbites, or you (and the GOP) can present cold hard facts about why your guy/gal would make a better POTUS. and as I said, if you offer that the GOP stands for ’small government’ lower deficits, etc., you’d better back it up, as opposed to Bush et al who peed on our backs and told us it was raining.

No problem but it is a very short article. The point is this: Jay has stated the facts, shown charts and graphs to back up what he is saying but the people who down right hate obama will not listen to reason and that is this; He has not raised taxes on anyone, and the trillion dollar deficit was handed to him by bush. The stimulus spending belongs to him and thats it, everything else was previous yet the myth go’s on and on………

USinUK – “the reason private insurance in going through the roof is because bond yields are at historic lows” – Actually, it is much more simple than that. Rates are going up and will continue to go up because of runaway greed on the part of the Medical Insurance Industry.

Funny to see the liberals on here ignoring the fact that some of the blue states that Obama won will be losing electoral votes after completion of the 2010 census.

4 out 5 Americans want compromise? On WHAT? Going broke? Sounds like that poll was conducted in downtown Chicago. The Lefties weren’t too worried about compromise when Obamcare was shoved up our behinds, only now when they are losing ground do you hear the OBama media mouthpieces scream compromise or non-partisan.

Jay, you’ve simply stopped even making attempts at being objective.
10/13/10. Mr Obama says, “Republicans will have to learn to get along with me.”
Odd. I didn’t see you comment on that.
Enjoy next Tuesday.

Hey Mick, I guess he didnt raise the debt by 2 trillion either?
CNSNews.com) – In the first 19 months of the Obama administration, the federal debt held by the public increased by $2.5260 trillion, which is more than the cumulative total of the national debt held by the public that was amassed by all U.S. presidents from George Washington through Ronald Reagan.

JB needs to take off his rose colored glasses…as long as BO is president, Dems have small chance of winning any election. America is on destination cruise control. First, get the Dems out of control of both houses, Next, get Dem our of the white house. Can’t wait to see your first post on Wednesday after the landslide loss for the Dems.
