Ten or 15 years from now, when Latino-Americans are voting in greater numbers and voting consistently Democratic, Republicans will be wringing their hands at their inability to attract support from a community that in many ways might have been sympathetic to conservative causes.
The explanation will be the imagery in ads such as this one.

As far as what I would do to combat illegal immigration?
#1 I would sell hardware to the Mexican government so they could effectively fight and defeat the drug cartels.
#2 I would involve the business community who already have plants and operate in Mexico to help them develop their economy to the point that they have no need to come here to work for $5-$7 an hour.
#3 I would also involve the governments and businesses of other Central American countries to work on their economies and countries. Contrary to popular opinion, not all brown skinned border crossers are Mexican. There are Hondurans, Guatamalans, Salvadorian, etc… who travel THRU Mexico to come to the US.
Any solution to illegal immigration, regardless to what country or continent you’re talking about, has to involve economic solutions or else they will fail. People don’t come to live in the US just because the leaves are pretty in the fall or gas is relatively cheap. They come here to work.

Southern Comfort,
The people who are invading our borders are not scared enough. They know nothing will happen to them. They can try to cross with impunity. All of the border agents in the world will not fix the problem if they are not given the authority to keep them from crossing and make the consequences more important than the deed. They will push the envelope until we get tough. Try shooting some of them. Give them a message. Unless you make them scared enough, thousands more will be here every month and nothing is solved. This is a national security issue which is costing the taxpayer billions of dollars/yr. And no one is doing anything about it.

Why would you weigh their vote based on their tax return? Is one person more of a citizen because he earns more and pay more taxes? or are you trying to get cheats to pay their fair share in taxes because it would give them more votes? Either way, I’m a one citizen, one vote person. I don’t care if you’re a felon or not. Just because you’re a felon doesn’t automatically disquallify you from being a citizen. I understand the need for punishment for crimes, however, once you’ve done your time and paid the price, you should be able to actively participate in society.

You wanna know the truth about border security and national security? Actual terrorist have been caught trying to enter the US thru the Northern Border. Canada’s asylum laws are even more lax than the United States. Terrorist cells have been tracked near the border in Canada in places like Toronto. The Southern Border does not worry me at all when compared to the Northern Border. Even scarier is that the same people who harp on the South have no clue as to what’s to the North.

58% of all welfare payments go to illegals
83% of all warrants for murder in Phoenix go to illegals

These “official language” proponents would be surprised to find that until the hysteria of late, only two places had anything resembling “official” languages, New Mexico (Spanish and English) and Louisiana (French and English). Those guarantees were secured in the treaties incorporating the territories into the United States in order to protect the language and culture of the ESTABLISHED populations. There was the fear that these populations would leave and disrupt the infrastructure of the regions.

How’s this for a serious solution to the immigration “problem” if you want to call it that. Make it very simple to get into the US legally. Minimal financial requirement, easy visa documentation, clean criminal record required, not much else. You get a five year visa, after that you have to go home or apply for citizenship. while your here, you pay income tax,SSI, Medicare etc, but you’re not entitled to anything but education for the kiddies. We get the labor, they get the jobs, and we get to know who’s here and where they are.

A “weighted” vote means there are greater voters and lesser voters. It can’t mean anything else. I’m just saying it would be a WHOLE lot easier to just let people sell their votes. Much easier law to change, and no one would have to keep track of how much someone is worth. That would work out easily in how much they can afford to spend to buy votes.

Most Latinos are conservative. Most Latinos are Roman Catholic.
Six of the nine members of the Supreme Court are Roman Catholic. All five conservatives on the Court are Roman Catholic.
Most Latinos take exception to being ridiculed and called names by anyone. Most Latinos take exception to being labeled as someone close to non-human.
Latinos are the backbone of many local communities. Latinos are the primary employees of many industries. Latinos are the economic might of many local communities. Whether legal or illegal, take them out and the local community dies.
Maybe we need to adopt the Ronald Reagan Solution to illegals aliens, make them legal. Reagan signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which legalized 2.8 million undocumented workers.
Legalizing about 10 million illegals today would be about the same ratio of illegals to population as the 2.8 million Reagan legalized.
Do we want to honor the legacy of Reagan? Do we want to pretend that it never happened?

If the US put as much effort into nation building next door as we did across the world, do you think we would have an immigration issue from south of the border?
If you have an infestation problem, do you board up your house to try to fight it? or do you take away any and all sources of food to drive them away? If you want to do away with the problem, you have to deal with the source. It’s the economy…
If you go after the people who hire illegals here, you take away a money source. If you help their own government to provide work and a means of support at home, you take away incentive for them to risk their lives to come here. If you focus on the totality of immigration as opposed to one segment, you may actually achieve progress on stemming the flow of illegal immigrants.
You still haven’t said a peep about the North? That makes me really wonder if you’re as serious about national security as you say you are. That’s approximately 5000 miles of border there with fewer resources.

Anchor babies, no matter what label you try to apply to them, are US citizens. If they don’t have an incentive to come here to work for $5 an hour, they would not be here to have babies.

Billy Graham Crusades
“World-famous Billy Graham evangelist Billy Graham has held four crusades in Georgia—one in Augusta, in 1948, and three in Atlanta, in 1950, 1973, and 1994. Each of these large revivals drew thousands of people from across the South.
In 1966 Graham contacted local officials and clergymen in Americus to solicit their help in organizing an evangelistic outreach program for the city. Community members objected to Graham’s stipulation that the meetings be integrated, however, and none stepped forward to sponsor the program. Graham was prepared to cancel his plans when Jimmy Carter, then a state senator, volunteered to help. Because local churches refused to allow an integrated film screening, Carter arranged to host the program in the basement of an abandoned school building.
Carter and Graham According to Graham, Carter later reported that no less than 565 people attended the film screening.
In 1973 Graham returned to Atlanta for a six-night crusade at Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium, which drew nightly audiences of between 35,000 and 44,000 people. The civil rights leaders Ralph Abernathy and Hosea Williams urged blacks to boycott the Graham crusade, and picketers, charging Graham with racism because of his refusal to affirm the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1972 banning of the death penalty, protested at the stadium. But the Reverend Martin Luther King Sr. sat on the platform with Graham and led a prayer one night.”

Nice Marley cut! Thanks!
I do keep it in the back of my mind and as an option just in case. Generally in economic hard times it’s MOTs who bear the brunt…seems we’ve got Messicans taking the heat off…but you never know. I love America and I love the South. Both have been good places to be in the Diaspora. But then so were Spain, Germany, Hungary, Holland, Greece, Italy and some other places and, out of the blue and overnight…I’m a lukewarm zionist myself, Unmentionable (being an Indian) is a die hard and we have had a number of heated discussions on the matter…his refrain when things get too bad is always, “I’m going to plant trees on a kibbutz in Eretz Israel.”

GOP pushing Latinos to the Dems? Well the Dems have sure done a great job of pushing what is looking more and more like an unprecedented number of the rest of the country to the GOP.
Only once in 60 years has the Gallup generic ballot underestimated Democratic strength by a significant amount – by 2% in 2006. On average, it slightly overestimates the Democrats, by 0.7%.
Right now, the Gallup traditional model is showing the Democrats at 41% of the vote, and gives the Republicans an advantage of 14 points. That would point to a final result along the lines of 57-43. It’s hard for (me) to say how many seats that would yield, but it would be way more than 60. The Democrats have not sustained a share of the generic vote in the RealClearPolitics average higher than 43% since the early spring. With the amazingly unpopular Nancy Pelosi as the face of the party, congressional job approval now limited to legislative aides, and more voters than ever suggesting that their own member doesn’t deserve reelection, just how much higher than 43% should we really expect that final number to go?
This would mean that the current alignment of the House–255 Dem, 178 Rep., 2 Ind–would nearly reverse itself. Again: UNPRECEDENTED!

I’ve got my popcorn and soda sitting ready. I’m watching to see who it works out to be the final, one and only ,really really, TRUE “Republican”
Great idea for the small screen.
Roll it out for the 2012 Presidential election in a Survivor format.

Southern Comfort,
Do you think it is fair to grant citizenship to those who enter our country illegally? Do you think that illegals should be granted US citizenship for their children born here? Do you think that the crossing of our borders by illegals is something that we should be upset about? Do you feel that America is paying too much for this crowd of felons and what should we do about the problem? As far as the Northern borders are concerned, that segment of illegal immigration is a mere drop in the bucket compared to our southern border. Most of the illegal immigration coming from Canada is not due to Laninos, but to mules that help Pakistanis, Arabs, and other Middle Eastern people at 35K/per pop. If all we had to worry about was Canada, we could rest easy.

Forgive me if I veer into apples to oranges comparisons. However, I see the vote as a fundamental job for each and every citizen. That is what makes us who we are.
Life isn’t fair or equal and it shouldn’t be. Achievers rise above slackers. However, when it comes to the ballot box, I don’t think any one person’s voice should be any louder than the next.

I would have NO PROBLEM giving every citizen of the U.S. one vote for federal elections including a weighted vote based on your tax returns with a maximum of three full votes.

Thank you Neal Boortz. He espoused that idea at least ten years ago. I won’t say it is his as he rarely has any original thoughts (he freely admits this). You could at the very LEAST give credit.
Oh, and before he got bought by the Republican party with radio syndication he ALSO had admiration for the illegals. I remember one show after a Uhaul van packed like a sardine can full of illegals was stopped and they were arrested. His point then was that here in Atlanta folks won’t spend 50 cents to ride marta across town for a job while these illegals risk everything on a journey of 1000’s of miles to better them selves.

Seriously, though, the Dems have created a problem with this constituency and who knows what will happen at the polls, but the checkbook has been put in the lock box for the time being…Blanch du Bois ain’t buying it,,,

I’m 100% in agreement with jconservative on the immigration issue. Having grown up in their midst (California) there’s no way one can ignore the values inherent within the Latino community.
Having said that, I have friends who are leaving California for, among other reasons, the heavy burdens illegal migrants have put on the state’s economy. They feel like they’ve been overwhelmed. It’s nothing personal against Latinos….some of them ARE Latinos….immigrants from other countries too. They no longer see California as a viable option.
It’s sad. They’ve lived there for as long as I can remember.

josef, it is no secret that I am completely in love with America. And always have been. And I consider myself one of the luckiest people alive simply for having been born here. (And not in 1939 Germany.)
She has given me everything. And I have enjoyed her boundless bounty and beauty. And though at times, I have been exasperated at our government and capitalist system, I still adhere to the belief that it is the greatest and most noble experiment in human history.
With that said, I am not certain that I want to die here. Sometimes distant lands call to me and I would entertain the thought of emigrating elsewhere. But I must confess, Israel is nowhere near the top of the list…

Thanks Amvet and josef. I should have known that. Brain fart.
josef: You are paraphrasing something I have been saying for years. The “Mexican” illegals (I put that in quotes because there are illegals from all over the world) are the strongest and smartest their nation have. They prove that by crossing the border. America was founded on the strongest from every Country in the world. Those who were not aristocrats and would not have a chance to succeed in their original Country came here……….. and made us strong. The inbred blue bloods stayed in Europe where they could oppress those too weak to leave. It’s really quite simple……..

Nice Guy, don’t be such a drama queen. It does not bother me in the slightest. I find it rather amusing and merely made an observation. The crowd is 99% white ala the good old segregationist days. Don’t be afraid to confirm it. Just watch a video of the last three or four.
Fred, why would I believe that you even have two nickles to rub together, much less two dollars?
But you are the perfect modern day caricature of those stupid “America. Love It or Leave It” bumper stickers from the 70s…
