Eight days to go, time for election predictions

538

Source: http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com

With the midterm election now just eight days away, it’s time to show your stuff. Break out your crystal balls and predict — in hard numbers — how many seats the Republicans will occupy in both the House and Senate by the time the smoke lifts off the battlefield and the polls close in Alaska and Hawaii.

Democrats are claiming that their voters are finally awakening to the challenge ahead, while Republican scoff at the notion and predict great things ahead.  As of Sunday, Nate Silver, the statistician behind the fivethirtyeight blog, was predicting that the Democrats will still hold a four-vote margin in the Senate, while Republicans would have a 25-vote margin in the House.

But what’s YOUR call?

I’ll take the winner out to lunch at Manuel’s, at my expense.  For you conservatives, that’s not only a free lunch, it’s a chance to tell me face to face just how wrong I am about everything (but we’ll only have an hour or so.)

The rules are easy:

– How many seats in the House will Republicans hold?

– How many seats in the Senate will Republicans hold? (For scoring purposes, each Senate seat will be valued at four House seats).

– For the tie-breaker, please predict the percentage of the popular vote that Nathan Deal wins in the Georgia governor’s race.

– All entries must be posted in this blog item, and they close at midnight Tuesday, Oct. 26.

But what’s YOUR call?

my call is the rather cowardly, but statistically sensible, “whatever Nate says it’s going to be.”

Which at this point has the GOP taking about fifty House seats (so it changes hands), six Senate seats (so it doesn’t change hands), and Barnes loses to Deal by 5.5 points.

Kinda thing you expect when the economy continues to be, as we used to say back in the day, teh suxorz.

So Jay, how’s the fambly? anything you care to relate here?

Guess I should’ve given actual numbers, so I’ll try again. Based on what Nate Silver’s number chugging:

Senate winds up 50 Dems plus Bernie and Joementum = 52 to 48.
House winds up 228 Reps to 207 Dems.
Deal wins with 51.2% of vote.

Take my word for it, Nathan will look good in a tailored prison jumpsuit that one of his cos. makes and sells to the guvmint.

And I’m picking June 15 as the federal guvmint shutdown date when the Tea Party people find out their SS checks and Medicare are handled by federal employees that ain’t getting paid to work any more.

that is a shame–you and Jon really seem to be somewhat kindred spirits and an on-the-ground report would’ve been a nice treat for us.

By the way, Fresh Air’s Terri Gross did a wonderful interview with Jon Stewart a couple weeks back. I found it illuminating mostly for the shop-talk (if you ever wondered how they put The Daily Show together, you’ll know after you hear it) but also for his own heartfelt belief that we Americans are, basically, a lot better than we tend to be portrayed, especially of late, and that this country has weathered a lot worse than what we’re dealing with now.

Without NPR, we would soon be left with very little on the radio that doesn’t conform to the debased worldview of Rupert Murdoch, or that fails to make money for the likes of him.

The Williams affair happens to have occurred at a moment when many NPR stations are in the midst of seasonal fundraising. With that coincidence comes an unusual opportunity. I’ve been a regularly contributing member of my local NPR station for many years; but this week, I’m going to give a few dollars more. Personally, I think this is what the Dems plan from the start. And to be honest, I don’t have a problem with it. For years the health insurance has been supported on the backs of other industries paying outrageous health premiums, and because of that have had to cut their employees wages.

So, drop the coverage, pay your employees better wages, and invest in your own business instead of the health insurance crooks. Sounds like a plan.

Bosch – “Is it such a lie when the GOP keeps saying they want to repeal the health care law which includes children with pre-existing conditions not being denied coverage”

Let’s go ahead and get this one straight. From the onset, the Right was conceding that healthcare was not perfect in its current state and that something needed to be done, re: pre-existing conditions, children coverage, etc. What they did not want then and do not want now, is a huge, overhaul, government chest pounding legislation. You don’t have to boil the ocean to cook macaroni and cheese.

As for your practicing, I’d say you don’t need any more practice, you’re a natural.

get ready for increased gas prices starting at the beginning of the year, by two years it will be close to $4 and within 4 years we will have outrageous gas prices and manipulated shortages again.
the republicans will probably win this election and the next presidential election. doubt it if you want to, but we’re struggling now, it’s going to be very difficult when gas prices shoot up again and it’s reported that every quarter the oil companies have set a new record for profits. this just happened not too long ago and you just watch as it happens again.

Dems not willing to compromise??? That’s a laugher. Obama’s biggest mistake was assuming that the R’s would approve of any of his proposals even if they were originally republican ideas. The stimulus was 1/3 tax cuts but they claim it didn’t create a SINGLE job. They proposed the mandated insurance coverage in 1993 but now say it’s unconstitutional. Part of Walmart’s marketing strategy was to take a patriotic stand to “buy American”. They abandoned that once they had destroyed the mom and pop competition. They were still able to make a profit on American products but not as large a profit margin as with Chinese products so they didn’t carry them. They are a textbook example of how monopoly can thwart free market forces.

About the compromises made by democrats……

Didn’t the democrats make most of the compromises to appease other democrats who were reluctant to vote for the bill? Like Sestak for example.

Seems many more were made in an effort to avoid embarrassment that it was members of their own party who held them up.

But odd how people forget about that and those deals made for Democrats…

must be a purely honest mistake and a lapse in memory to not include the majority of compromises were called for by a democrat.

Ever heard of a RINO??? The right wing base detests compromise but without compromise we would never have even had a constitution. There were bitter disputes and some of the founding fathers loathed each other but they worked together for the good of the people. That is the nature of democracy.

I listened to one of the candidates talking in one breath about stopping spending, shrinking government or anything else that made the debt worse. I could go along with that line of thought. Then, then next breath was about cutting taxes to put more money in the hands of citizens. Once again, I thought that was reasonable. I listened to the rest of the speech and waited for the part about spending cuts to offset the tax relief, but that never happened. That’s the rude awakening that awaits the GOP/Tea Party faithful after Nov. 2nd.

The referendum on the Amendment #2?

From an email from my state rep:

Helpful Guide to the Ballot Questions

Amendment 2: “Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to impose an annual $10.00 trauma charge on certain passenger motor vehicles in this state for the purposes of funding trauma care?” SR 277

If Amendment 2 is passed by the voters, an extra $10 charge would be assessed on your vehicle when you renew your tag each year. That $10 fee would be used to fund the state’s trauma system. Grady Hospital would receive some of the funds. In parts of Georgia, including portions of our Interstate highways, a catastrophic automobile accident is virtually guaranteed to be fatal because of the distance from a trauma center. Fixing this problem is why the General Assembly is giving you the chance to vote on Amendment 2.

By placing this provision in the Georgia Constitution, it ensures that the General Assembly will not be able to spend the funds for any purpose other than trauma care.

http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2009_10/pdf/sr277.pdf

Apparently some of the money will got to Grady. How much is unknown.

But to vote no based simply on this canard seems particularly myopic.

When the Republicans begin to screw over the country as they did during the Bush Administration…..people will see what they’re REALLY about!! People voting AGAINST their own interest to insure that the wealthy continue to squeeze the middle class and denigrate those in poverty!!

VERY INTERESTING!!!!

And what will change when the Republics assume control of the House? I anticipate nothing.

You see the Republics will not have a veto proof majority in the House and will likely not have a majority in the Senate. The Democrats are likely to take a page out of the Republican playbook and say no to everything the Republics propose. So the victory will be hollow.

The tone of no compromise was set by the Republics in this Congress in both Houses. As per my previous posting, politicians need to be able to compromise to get anything done. Politics is all about compromise.

The Republics will control the agenda in the House. That is it. None of their proposals will go anywhere. True, none of the Democratic proposals will either.

So who wins? You see the Republics set up game this session of Congress. Nothing they want to see pass will pass.

Alright, a contest!!

You’ll notice I shortened the name. Some seemed offended by it, though Juan Williams was okay with it. Guess that’ll show him. Anyway, I reserve the right to use the full name in the future, especially on Cynthia’s blog.

Now for the predictions:

48 Republican Senators
231 Republican Representatives
50.2% for Deal in the Gub. race.

I think a lot of conservatives are saying they haven’t decided, but when they go to the ballot box they’ll actually vote for the guy with the (R) beside his name. As I’ve said many times before, Georgia’s choices stink.

Jay, can the winner select a cash equivalent? :)

Here’s a prediction – Americans are going to lose so long as Republicans or Democrats get elected. By the way, that is not an endorcement of any current sitting “independant” politicians.

The two party system only exists to perpetuate the leviathan state and the american citizenry suffers for its existence.

Don’t vote. A 10% turnout would undermine all their authority and might give us a fighting chance. If you must vote, only vote for Libertarians or None of the Above (go ahead and write it in).

The political process is broken.

Okay….so the Republicans win, I have not heard one solution offered by the Republicans on how to “fix” the economy, all I hear is what is wrong, and that the Democrats and Obama do not “get” it, they are bad for America…so what genius is actually going to step and provide the LEADERSHIP for ALL Amercians ? , so we get back on track and regain our position as leader of the world…I just see more of the same, finger pointing, etc, bitching, moaning, etc…what is frustrating is I am a Republican, soon to be Liberatarian…love all of these predictions, what a bunch of BS

We Amercians deserve so much better, while we will continue to be stuck in political concrete, regardless of what happens next week, the rest of the world just blows right past us, laughing all the way…we used to LEAD the world, our greed for $ and the ability to use and depend on three letters–> OIL, have led us here, while other countries felt the sting of the Great Recession, most have bounced back, “retooled” fiscally and are moving ahead, we choose to finger point, blame, whine, etc and even some say bring back the “old” Amercia, well the world no longer is dependant on the US, the last three years have proven that…..we need LEADERSHIP, someone to build consensus, not blame the other, if anyone sees this person, please speak up.

And in Georgia, the choice for Gov is a TOTAL dork-Mr Barnes , or Nathan ” might be bankrupt, maybe?, trust me ” Deal….no wonder people do not vote, that is what we are presented.

All the Tea partying Repunklicans have their carts lined up in front of the horses. They’re counting the chicks before the eggs hatch. Many Repunklicans actually believe their own rhetorical propaganda. The Repunklicans release flawed, Luntz type polls and they actually believe the results. Governor Roy Barnes, the leader of the Conservative wing of the Democrat Party will win easily over Nathan Deal the criminal element who will either lose on election day or be indicted before election day. Nathan Deal went to the Federal Prosecutors and told them he wanted to “cop a plea”, make a deal. The prosecutors told him, no Deal. On election day the voters in Georgia will tell Nathan Deal, no Deal.

A warning of what Senator Harry Reid has in store for us, if he is reelected? An AMNESTY–for 13 to 20 million illegal aliens, with a price tag of 2.6 Trillion dollars to process each individual and subsidize their welfare programs, according to the Heritage Foundation. They send approximately $60 billion annually out of the country to their families, plus an estimate $113 billion dollars at the local level of government for public benefits. Harry Reid voted to continuously fund Sanctuary cities and States, so did Senator Barbara Boxer of California. Harry Reid and the majority of democrats crashed American-English as the recognized language of this country, and voted for illegal aliens to participate in our wilting Social Security System. Senator Reid, Boxer and the largest proportion of Lib-Democrats voted equally, to what top Democrats wanted every time. This is sheer madness when his Nevada has the largest proportion of jobless Americans, the highest rate of bankruptcies and home foreclosures. Another fact is that Reid voted yes, to continue public entitlements, including unemployment benefits to foreign nationals.

He must have turned senile when he states that there are no illegal aliens in Nevada, which is currently slipping into insolvency. In the last ten years Dem-Libs have failed to complete the real paired fence along the length of the border with Mexico, but sued Arizona for trying to defend its citizens from overflow of monetary illegal aliens, criminals and even foreign grown terrorists. Senator Reid, along with Barbara Boxer challenged E-Verify, the local policing law 287 (G) yet pushing to award tuition to children of illegal aliens for a college and state universities education, when American students cannot even afford the escalating fees. GOOGLE–”On the issues” website, and then decide your voting preference. In addition GOOGLE—illegal alien costs. I’m a Tea Party Blogger, Independent voter and will be watchful of organizations canvassers’ similar to ACORN, which registered illegal aliens to vote, as well as deceased people and even fictitious people living in vacant lots. GOOGLE–Voter fraud, it’s a crime against US citizens and naturalized Americans. Incidentally Tea Party people do not genuflect to either party and are strongly opposed to either ideologies.
