Eight days to go, time for election predictions

538

Source: http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com

With the midterm election now just eight days away, it’s time to show your stuff. Break out your crystal balls and predict — in hard numbers — how many seats the Republicans will occupy in both the House and Senate by the time the smoke lifts off the battlefield and the polls close in Alaska and Hawaii.

Democrats are claiming that their voters are finally awakening to the challenge ahead, while Republican scoff at the notion and predict great things ahead.  As of Sunday, Nate Silver, the statistician behind the fivethirtyeight blog, was predicting that the Democrats will still hold a four-vote margin in the Senate, while Republicans would have a 25-vote margin in the House.

But what’s YOUR call?

I’ll take the winner out to lunch at Manuel’s, at my expense.  For you conservatives, that’s not only a free lunch, it’s a chance to tell me face to face just how wrong I am about everything (but we’ll only have an hour or so.)

The rules are easy:

– How many seats in the House will Republicans hold?

– How many seats in the Senate will Republicans hold? (For scoring purposes, each Senate seat will be valued at four House seats).

– For the tie-breaker, please predict the percentage of the popular vote that Nathan Deal wins in the Georgia governor’s race.

– All entries must be posted in this blog item, and they close at midnight Tuesday, Oct. 26.

I did not say “WalMart is the leading contributor to the death of small businesses in towns across the country ”….that was a quote from someone else….I was simply commenting on it.

The real question is not if the Republicans will make big gains (they will) but what will happen in the next two years. I’ll predict these Tea Party people will prove to be incredibly incompetent and the Democrats, including Obama, will sweep to election and re-election in 2012.

I really don’t know how this will turn out. I am skeptical to predict a route. There is only so much you can tell from polls. My sense is that either the Republicans will win bigger than they think or will not win near as much as they think. I don’t the current predictions holding true. There is a lot of sentiment that just isn’t recogniszed by these very mediocre polls.
I do hope at least on of the houses flip. There is much needed balance missing from the current arrangement in Washington.

Compromise with a progressive liberals is giving up your beliefs and accepting theirs. That is not compromise but tyranny. That is what the liberals have done in their short reign of power. Smoked filed backroom deals, extorting senators, and simple bribery. That is not politics we want.

Part of Walmart’s marketing strategy was to take a patriotic stand to “buy American”. They abandoned that once they had destroyed the mom and pop competition. They were still able to make a profit on American products but not as large a profit margin as with Chinese products so they didn’t carry them. They are a textbook example of how monopoly can thwart free market forces.

I love it when two cities that have never had a championship get a chance for it (yes I know the Giants won in NY, but does that matter to San Franciscans?) Just my Libertarian side coming out I guess!

Results 2010:
House of Reps: 240 GOP, 195 Dem
Senate: 50 GOP, 48 Dem, 2 independents caucusing with Dems, Biden tie-breaker, but new Majority leader as Harry goes down!
GA Goobers: 46.5% Deal, 45.9% Barnes, 6% Monds, runoff will be decided by less than 500 votes and will have several recounts before Deal is finally declared winner. Hopefully then we can then get rid of the stupid runoff rule! I will have had to vote in at least 6 elections this year…

whoops!

About the compromises made by democrats……

Didn’t the democrats make most of the compromises to appease other democrats who were reluctant to vote for the bill? Like Sestak for example.

Seems many more were made in an effort to avoid embarrassment that it was members of their own party who held them up.

But odd how people forget about that and those deals made for Democrats…

must be a purely honest mistake and a lapse in memory to not include the majority of compromises were called for by a democrat.

Willieb, the dems compromised on a number of their principles in the healthcare debate. Tyranny is an unwillingness to compromise on any of your principles and is what the R’s did. Ever heard of a RINO??? The right wing base detests compromise but without compromise we would never have even had a constitution. There were bitter disputes and some of the founding fathers loathed each other but they worked together for the good of the people. That is the nature of democracy.

I am looking forward to the GOP retaking the House. It will be a rude awakening for the politically naive. They will find out that all the bumper sticker rhetoric does absolutely nothing when it comes to governing.

I listened to one of the candidates talking in one breath about stopping spending, shrinking government or anything else that made the debt worse. I could go along with that line of thought. Then, then next breath was about cutting taxes to put more money in the hands of citizens. Once again, I thought that was reasonable. I listened to the rest of the speech and waited for the part about spending cuts to offset the tax relief, but that never happened. That’s the rude awakening that awaits the GOP/Tea Party faithful after Nov. 2nd.

Regardless to who is in control, the American people lose if the governing isn’t practical and sensible.

You are free to use the analogy of your choice i would offer that the choice yu used was just a smidge over-drammatic.

But you do understand that there were people over here, alot of people, who were completely fine with their inurance coverage and only wanted a few things tweaked…and most of that had to do with cost.

Odd thing cost has increased at a faster rate than before the bill’s passage and many experts predict it will actually be more expensive and sharper rate hikes.

The only thing that will happen after Nov. 2nd is that the people who were fleecing us will get back to business as usual without impediment.

I wonder if anyone has stopped to realize the total amount of money that has been spent on campaigning this year. Had that money been used by businesses to create jobs, I’m sure unemployment would be down a bit from where it is. Instead of pouring millions upon millions into campaigns, companies and people could have been pouring that money into decisions to help the economy.

The referendum on the Amendment #2?

From an email from my state rep:

Helpful Guide to the Ballot Questions

Amendment 2: “Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to impose an annual $10.00 trauma charge on certain passenger motor vehicles in this state for the purposes of funding trauma care?” SR 277

If Amendment 2 is passed by the voters, an extra $10 charge would be assessed on your vehicle when you renew your tag each year. That $10 fee would be used to fund the state’s trauma system. Grady Hospital would receive some of the funds. In parts of Georgia, including portions of our Interstate highways, a catastrophic automobile accident is virtually guaranteed to be fatal because of the distance from a trauma center. Fixing this problem is why the General Assembly is giving you the chance to vote on Amendment 2.

By placing this provision in the Georgia Constitution, it ensures that the General Assembly will not be able to spend the funds for any purpose other than trauma care.

http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2009_10/pdf/sr277.pdf

Apparently some of the money will got to Grady. How much is unknown.

But to vote no based simply on this canard seems particularly myopic.

But when it came to comparing Obama to congressional Republicans, voters chose the Republicans as better able to turn around the economy by 6 points; by 11 points on creating jobs; by 7 points on health care and by 8 points on Social Security. The Republican advantage over Obama on the deficit was about the same as it was over their Capitol Hill counterparts.

Only eight more days to join the WINNERS – The Republicans! mmm, mmm, mmm….

When the Republicans begin to screw over the country as they did during the Bush Administration…..people will see what they’re REALLY about!! People voting AGAINST their own interest to insure that the wealthy continue to squeeze the middle class and denigrate those in poverty!!

VERY INTERESTING!!!!

And what will change when the Republics assume control of the House? I anticipate nothing.

You see the Republics will not have a veto proof majority in the House and will likely not have a majority in the Senate. The Democrats are likely to take a page out of the Republican playbook and say no to everything the Republics propose. So the victory will be hollow.

The tone of no compromise was set by the Republics in this Congress in both Houses. As per my previous posting, politicians need to be able to compromise to get anything done. Politics is all about compromise.

What is a hammper?

The Republics will control the agenda in the House. That is it. None of their proposals will go anywhere. True, none of the Democratic proposals will either.

So who wins? You see the Republics set up game this session of Congress. Nothing they want to see pass will pass.

Alright, a contest!!

You’ll notice I shortened the name. Some seemed offended by it, though Juan Williams was okay with it. Guess that’ll show him. Anyway, I reserve the right to use the full name in the future, especially on Cynthia’s blog.

Now for the predictions:

48 Republican Senators
231 Republican Representatives
50.2% for Deal in the Gub. race.

I think a lot of conservatives are saying they haven’t decided, but when they go to the ballot box they’ll actually vote for the guy with the (R) beside his name. As I’ve said many times before, Georgia’s choices stink.

Jay, can the winner select a cash equivalent? :)

Here’s a prediction – Americans are going to lose so long as Republicans or Democrats get elected. By the way, that is not an endorcement of any current sitting “independant” politicians.

The two party system only exists to perpetuate the leviathan state and the american citizenry suffers for its existence.

Don’t vote. A 10% turnout would undermine all their authority and might give us a fighting chance. If you must vote, only vote for Libertarians or None of the Above (go ahead and write it in).

The political process is broken.

Okay….so the Republicans win, I have not heard one solution offered by the Republicans on how to “fix” the economy, all I hear is what is wrong, and that the Democrats and Obama do not “get” it, they are bad for America…so what genius is actually going to step and provide the LEADERSHIP for ALL Amercians ? , so we get back on track and regain our position as leader of the world…I just see more of the same, finger pointing, etc, bitching, moaning, etc…what is frustrating is I am a Republican, soon to be Liberatarian…love all of these predictions, what a bunch of BS
