The Obama administration has decided to abandon construction of a high-tech “virtual fence” along the Mexico-U.S. border, proclaiming it an expensive failure.
Just as most people expected it to be.
When the so-called Secure Border Initiative was announced back in 2006, President Bush called it “the most technologically advanced border security initiative in American history.”
“The American people are rightfully insistent on the fact that we solve this 30-year-old problem,” Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said. “And this is about a solution which we believe is going to do the job.”
Even at the time, though, most of those paying attention understood the project to be a purely political gesture by the Bush administration, which was eager to tamp down criticism of its immigration policy.
”We’ve been presented with expensive proposals for elaborate border technology that eventually have proven to be ineffective and wasteful,” U.S. Rep. Harold Rogers, R-Kentucky, warned in one 2006 congressional hearing. ”How is the SBI not just another three-letter acronym for failure?”
Eight hundred and fifty million dollars later, Rogers and others have been proved right. Last week, the Governmental Accountability Office released a scathing report on the 53-mile fence project and the performance of its lead contractor. Boeing. The report was the latest in a series of GAO reports dating back to 2007 that pointed out what investigators call “its well-chronicled history of not delivering promised capabilities and benefits on time and within budget.”
“Although some of the individual components perform acceptably, SBInet has failed to deliver on the promise of an integrated system that detects and simultaneously identifies intruders, and then quickly and accurately directs resources to intercept them,” said T.J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council.
“This is due to unrealistic expectations about the capabilities of current technology, as well as a flawed underlying concept. In their quest to automate border security, the system’s proponents appear to have lost sight of the fact that surveillance technology is incapable of apprehending anything; well-trained and highly-skilled law enforcement officers are necessary to accomplish that task.”

Your intellect astounds me daily.
Take a drive through your neighborhood sometime. Notice the large, rectangular shapes outlining the property of many people’s yards. Those, my mentally-challenged friend, are called ‘fences.’ People build them to keep people out, and pets and kids in. For more information, consult your local library.

Doggie, from below, you and I both know what the dictionary definition of socialism is, but only one of us is paying attention to how a nation gets there. None of the nations mired in it’s failed policies woke up one morning and said, “hey, today lets start being a socialist country”. They got there through the exactl same “compromise” this nations Democrats want every time there is an issue to debate. In reality, it’s just another step toward the definition you’ll find in the dictionary.
It would be foolish to wait until we fit the dictionary definition to start calling you what you are at the core, socialists. By that time it’ll be a little too late.

But tell me this Doggone. Of course you can get a 26 ft ladder for a 25 ft fence, but what will you do when you get down the other side? If anything, a fence will deter many from attempting it, and it will stop all automobile traffic through it. No more jeeps laden with a couple hundred pounds of coke slugging its way through the desert. I’m sure you can at least admit that a wall will have an effect on border crossings by making it significantly tougher.

Dig a moat from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the Pacific. 60 feet wide and 6-10 feet deep. Fill it with water, gators and crocodiles. Take the dirt from digging the moat and use it to fill in New Orleans. Solves three problems at once.
1- Gives us a more secure border. Not completely secure but better than it is now.
2- Raises the level of New Orleans to help prevent flooding.
3- Creates a habitat for gators and crocodiles.

The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385) passed on June 18, 1878, after the end of Reconstruction, with the intention (in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807) of substantially limiting the powers of the federal government to use the military for law enforcement. The Act prohibits most members of the federal uniformed services (today the Army, Navy, Air Force, and State National Guard forces when such are called into federal service) from exercising nominally state law enforcement, police, or peace officer powers that maintain “law and order” on non-federal property (states and their counties and municipal divisions) within the United States.
The statute generally prohibits federal military personnel and units of the National Guard under federal authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States, except where expressly authorized by the Constitution or Congress. The Coast Guard is exempt from the Act.

But then they were so spectacularly wrong about GWB I, that it is not in the least surprising.
Had BushCorp not stupidly implemented these serial failures, his half-black nephew could not have furthered them. His mistake is the one most spineless Dems make now. They are so intimidated into being Republican-lites that they come across as equally incompetent.

People have been building walls and fences for thousands of years for a reason. It works.
Doesn’t work for Israel on the West Bank……and it’s not working here……
How do you cross a heavily guarded border? By going underneath it.
That’s the lesson of the Gaza tunnels, which we explored in January and February. It’s the key to undersea drug smuggling and terrorism via submarines. And it’s happening along the U.S.-Mexico land border, too. William Booth of the Washington Post, who brought us the latest on drug-running submersibles, has an update from U.S. Border Patrol agents in Arizona:
In the past nine months, they have discovered 16 new tunnels dug by smugglers in Nogales to move drugs, migrants, cash and weapons between Mexico and the United States. The number of tunnels sets a new record. … The digging has become so extensive beneath Nogales that the southbound traffic lane through the international port of entry collapsed. “Before that, the parking lot at the customs office caved in,” Howells said. “They collapse all the time.”

The key is we found them. It takes more effort to build a tunnel than to walk across a ‘no fence’ border. Building more fence costs money! Well, it would if we hired illegals and financed by the Chinese companies. I thought someone said liberals thought about stuff before they said it.

Simple solution. We have around 2000 miles of southern border with Mexico. We put troops there, lets say 50,000 along the entire thing. 90% of Illegal immigration ceases immediately. Suspend to Posse Comitatus Act for this particular circumstance. Do it by executive order. Forget Congress. Just do it. Suspend all legal immigration for five years. Another executive order. During this time round up the criminal immigrants and send them home. Don’t have the troops? Implement a Special Draft for border security. The first politician who has the stones to say he’ll do this wins election to office by landslide .

They are built to SLOW down the attackers, cause them to use resources to overcome them, and to make them slower moving targets. I don’t believe a fence high tech virtual or physical would ever be sufficiently effective. I think we need to mount a military operation into Mexico and establish a buffer zone of 50 to 100 miles inside the Mexican border. Clear the border towns of drug cartel operations, mine the remote egress / regress routs, establish multiple military check points on all roads going to and from the U.S. border . Employ both high technology and boots on the ground surveillance 24/7. After we have that in place and operational we can then incept an orderly guest worker program. All illegal aliens would be required to return to their countries of origin and apply for guest worker status. All illegal’s failing to comply who’re apprehended would automatically be deported and permanently band from ever entering the United States. All employers who hire illegals would be heavily fined and those employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens would be charged with a criminal felony offense. The Mexican government and its citizens would be warned that all entry into the United States must take place through approved roads and check points to and from the American border. Armed military patrols both on the ground and in the air will have shoot to kill orders and anyone observed attempting to enter the United States in a manner other than through the approved roads and check points will be subject to those orders. All those who have applied for immigration into the United States and who’ve been on the waiting list would have first consideration for guest worker status in the United States while their visas are still in process.

porno scanning??? First, it’s gender on gender screening. Second, everyone who undergoes screening DOES NOT go thru a full body scan. Also, if you do not like the screening process, you do not have to fly. As far as I can recall, flying is not a right guaranteed by law, it is a privilege paid for by the person who chooses to fly. You’re free to talk about anybody or everybody you feel like. If you think the process is so friggin’ bad, then why don’t you come up with a better process to screen 100% of persons flying that works. Free interprise at work, dude!!

From your article:
Senate filibusters were once reserved for the most divisive issues — race, conspicuously. Now filibusters are routine. From 1919 to 1960, cloture (the decision to end debate, now requiring 60 votes) was filed 27 times. From 2003 to 2006, when Republicans controlled the Senate, they filed cloture 130 times to break Democratic filibusters. Since 2007, when Democrats took charge, they’ve filed 257 cloture motions, Davis reports.

Molly Ivins: we held The Fence climbing contest. See, people talked about building The Fence back then, too. The Fence along the Mexican border. To keep Them out.
At the time, the proposal was quite specific — a 17-foot cyclone fence with bob wire at the top. So a test fence was built at Terlingua, and the First-Ever Terlingua Memorial Over, Under or Through Mexican Fence Climbing Contest took place. Prize: a case of Lone Star beer. Winning time: 30 seconds.
I tell this story to make the one single point about the border and immigration we know to be true: The Fence will not work. No fence will work. The Great darn Wall of China will not work. Do not build a fence. It will not work. They will come anyway. Over, under or through.

I am not the scholar many of you are, nor am I an engineer. However, to my memory the Berlin Wall was pretty successful. Of course it was short. But having guards with weapons went a long way toward discouraging any fence-jumpers.
We have massive unemployment. People with good or marginal skills need jobs. People with poor skills need training and discipline. This sounds like the perfect fit. Train ‘em and let ‘er rip. With consistency we COULD do something about this!
I teach the children of illegal immigrants. The kids I teach are generally hard-working and well-behaved and their parents want them to do well. However, there are too many of them born here and able to garner American services immediately. The companies that hire their (mostly) fathers have no problem passing the expenses of these new Americans off on the rest of us and fattening the bottom line for themselves.
I believe we need to be identifying and repartriating the foreign nationals here illegally. It would be wise to identify those with skills we need, and devise a way to citizenship for them. This would include showing proficiency in English, having a marketable skill, having their children in school and out of trouble, and paying fines and penalties immediately. Failing that, back they go, and to the end of the line! Charge a per person fee for the repatriation, coming out of US aid to the sending countries.
We should also be concerned about those coming here on student visas, having children, and outstaying the visas. It isn’t just the Latinos taking advantage of the American people.
We need not only significant fines but also significant jail time for employers allowing this.
That which we do not defend we do not have. Surely, to most of us, our citizenship is one of the most important, significant, valuable things we have. It is imperative that we defend it, both for ourselves and the rest of the world.

That is the stated goal of the TSA. It takes time to fully impliment.
And that time could be used to find an alternative method that is effective and not as intrusive.
I get my rights from my creator. Rights are not guaranteed by law, only denied.
Ummm… The Bill of Rights guarantees rights by law. Care to try again??? I understand your point, but if everyone thought like that, then there would be no countries or divisions of land. We’d all be one community living under the laws of the Creator. How would you differentiate between the rights of your Creator versus Ahmed’s Creator or Chen’s Creator…
Comman sense. The israelites do a pretty good job.
The Israelites also profile. Are you suggesting the government profile. If you’ve ever been thru security in Israel, it can take 4-5 hours to get thru their security sometime. How would you sell that to the American traveling public? People already complain about waiting an hour for security.
I mean really SoCo, do you feel right rummaging through the purse of a sweet ole lady from Alabama? How much time are you wasting? Why does a pilot have to be scanned when he is IN CONTROL of the biggest weapon? What is the security scanning for baggage handlers?
I guess you haven’t heard of the Chechen Black Widows? An old lady might be innocent, but she could also be naive. Somebody could put things in her bag without her knowledge just because nobody expects grandma to pack explosives. It’s a waste of time if nobody’s trying to attack us. Once you can prove that, then it’s all a waste of time.
A pilot is scanned BECAUSE he is in control of the biggest weapon. There’s more to their screening other than going thru a metal detector. Baggage handlers go thru screening too. You just can’t get hired off the street and start working the next day.
If you have all the answers, as you appear to, why don’t you do an internship with DHS. I’m sure you can change things and make it 100% effective without intruding into people’s personal lives or property. People like you have all the answers for what’s wrong, but have no clue as to what’s right. Keep trying though, and eventually you’ll be right. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

However, unions caused that with labor costs.
Now this is a new theory for me.
If I understand it correctly, American businesses by the tens of thousands, most by far non-unionized, were forced to break numerous US and state laws and illegally hire and employ illegals because of labor unions.

I think the answer to all has been given by the posters. It is just spread out amongst many posts. Part of the answer that I have been able to assemble is to build a transparent wall (glass, I presume) so that people attempting to cross the border will bump their heads on it and knock themselves out each time they try. To save money, the wall should be short and on wheels so it can be moved as needed based on observed piles of bones from attempted border crossings that failed. I wonder if anyone has considered erecting mirrors instead of glass walls. That could be interesting. Or maybe piles of bones could be scattered out along the border and people would get that message — anyone coming this way must eat spare ribs. They would not be able to afford it and would turn around and go back home.

What happens to all of us “terrorist suspects” (innocent fliers) after something is smuggled up their you know what?
Has there been a visible change in security screening since August 2009?
Pull my finger: Jihadist who blew himself up on Saudi prince’s private jet hid explosives in his anus
Al Qaeda Bombers Learn from Drug Smugglers
New Technique of Storing Bomb Materials Inside Body Cavity Nearly Kills a Saudi Prince
To get his bomb into this room, Abdullah Asieri, one of Saudi Arabia’s most wanted men, avoided detection by two sets of airport security including metal detectors and palace security. He spent 30 hours in the close company of the prince’s own secret service agents – all without anyone suspecting a thing.
How did he do it?
Taking a trick from the narcotics trade – which has long smuggled drugs in body cavities – Asieri had a pound of high explosives, plus a detonator inserted in his rectum.
It’s already been tried. I’m guessing since the visible screening process has not changed much, the innocen fliers don’t have much to be fearful of. As a flyer myself, I wouldn’t mind knowing that nobody on board my flight has the capability to send me plummeting 36,000 feet, but that’s just me.
The attempts on US flagged carriers that you referred to have all originated OUTSIDE of the US. They were not screened by US officials, so I don’t think it’s fair to say that our screening failed when it was not us that did the screening.

The problem with Clinton’s position, is that Obama is nothing like Clinton. Obama’s further left. He doesn’t know how to foster job creation. He doesn’t have any business people in his administration.
I’m not a huge fan of Republicans. But we need continual regime change until we can get someone that has their act together. Like Bloomberg, or Mitch Daniels, or Tim Kaine, etc. etc.

BHO is a loser. Period. And so are his supporting cast in congress. It is terrible to see people pin their hopes on an ideologue with no real redeeming quality other than his being black and his being a member of the political party of their choice. He has done nothing to either stymy illegal immigration nor to help those that have already come across other than to maintain the status quo left by the weakminded Bush (and those before him)who also did nothing but let it continue.
Immigration is a good thing if it is done in a controlled fashion. But immigration into this country is out of control and we are going to pay both financially and culturally for that. And these very same poor immigrants are going to learn very quickly how to play the system.

The scene: The border town of Práxedis Guadalupe Guerrero, Mexico, where the threats from drug cartels run people out of their homes and the unforgiving, unchecked street law—complete with beheadings—has every family living in terror.
The conflict: No experienced lawman has the guts to take the job of police chief.
The twist: But one young woman, an attractive 20-year-old criminology student with an infant son, does. Enter Marisol Valles, the police chief now being hailed as the bravest woman in Mexico.

Well, I’ve been holding off, but I got a fix for that worthless fence. It comes from old Vernon Lilly up in Dawson County. He stopped his cows from getting thru his fence by hooking it up to the electric line that runs thru his property. One cow tried, and she was laid out deader than 3 a.m. in the morning. I read somewhere where about a quarter of the electricity we make in the U.S. of A. just disappears and never gets used. We could use that for the border fence and it wouldn’t cost hardly nothing. The smell of fried Mexican in the morning is just like chicken in a frying pan, or so I hear. I expect the first time somebody tried to climb over the fence or cut it would be the last time. Anyhow, no charge for the advise.

If one were to hook a power line to their fence, assuming they somehow lived through the process, it is at least 12.5KV after all, it would immediately kick a breaker or recloser, up the line and the power would go out. The cow would have few worries, unless it was trying to help with the hook-up.

The global economic crisis arose as a result of decades of global imperialism – known recently as ‘globalization’ – and the reckless growth of– speculation, derivatives and an explosion of debt. As the economic crisis spread, nations of the world, particularly the United States, bailed out the major banks (which should have been made to fail and crumble under their own corruption and greed), and now the West has essentially privatized profits for the banks, and socialized the risk. In other words, the nations bought the debt from the banks, and now the people have to pay for it. The people, however, are immersed in their own personal debt to such degrees that today, the average Canadian is $39,000 in debt, and students are graduating into a jobless market with tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars of student debt that they will never repay. Hence, we are now faced with a global debt crisis.
Here is a great article for those who spend “some” part of their day “reading” instead of posting on this inane blog. You might enjoy reading. It can be enlightening.

America and Europe, in the midst of the worst jobs crisis since the Great Depression, face an “explosion of social unrest.” Just yesterday, Europe experienced a wave of mass protests and social unrest in opposition to ‘austerity measures’, with a general strike in Spain involving millions of people, and a march on the EU headquarters in Brussels of nearly 100,000 people. As social unrest spreads, governments will likely react – as we saw in the case of the G20 in Toronto – with oppressive police state measures. Here, we see the true relevance of the emergence of ‘Homeland Security States’, designed not to protect people from terrorists, but to protect the powerful from the people.

So while things have never seemed quite so bleak, there is a dim and growing beacon of hope, in what Zbigniew Brzezinski has termed as the greatest threat to elite interests everywhere – the ‘global political awakening’. The global political awakening is representative of the fact that for the first time in all of human history, mankind is politically awakened and stirring, activated and aware, and that generally – as Zbigniew Brzezinski explains – generally is aware of global inequalities, exploitation, and disrespect. This awakening is largely the result of the information revolution – thus revealing the contradictory nature of the globalization project – as while it globalizes power and oppression, so too does it globalize awareness and opposition. This awakening is the greatest threat to entrenched elite interests everywhere. The awakening, while having taken root in the global south – already long subjected to exploitation and devastation – is now stirring in the west, and will grow as the economy crumbles. As the middle classes realize their consumption was an illusion of wealth, they will seek answers and demand true change, not the Wall Street packaged ‘brand-name’ change of Obama Inc., but true, inspired, and empowering change.

While American liberals tremble at the idea of sending an angry email to congress for fear that their name will appear on the State Department’s list of terrorists, French workers are on the front lines choking on tear gas and fending off billyclubs in hand-to-hand combat with Sarkozy’s Gendarmerie. That’s because the French haven’t forgotten their class roots. When the government gets too big for its britches, people pour out onto to the streets and Paris becomes a warzone replete with overturned Mercedes Benzs, smashed storefront windows, and stacks of smoldering tires issuing pillars of black smoke. This is what democracy looks like when it hasn’t been emasculated by decades of propaganda and consumerism.

There is one parallel that fits most every society. No matter the system or form of government, a small percentage always control most of the power and most of the money. They can stay that way, as long as the rest of the people are relatively content. The masses will put up with a lot, for a long time but every society has a tipping point. If that point is ever reached, things change and it’s usually not pretty. The trick is to let the masses have enough of the pie, to keep that from happening.

Many people don’t realize the rioting and upheaval that took place during the Great Depression. In fact, many aspects of the New Deal were a direct result of that rioting and upheaval. There was real fear that the country could go Com mu nist (I don’t want to show up on NSA computers). Think about the benefits afforded the working class after WWII and the Depression. Many of those benefits are the direct result of the unrest and upheaval during the 30s and 40s.

While the number of Americans earning more than $50 million fell from 131 in 2008 to 74 in 2009, those that remained at the top increased their income from an average of $91.2 million in 2008 to almost $519 million.

CNN) — A disturbingly graphic political ad is airing on local stations in Washington this week — and stations are telling viewers there’s nothing they can do to prevent it.
The ad, calling for an end to abortion, apparently shows bloody and dismembered fetuses, and has been airing over the past few days in the nation’s capital, including during afternoon and early-evening time slots, when children are likely to be watching.
But according to spokespersons for several of the broadcasters, they are required by law to carry the ads unaltered.
There’s a way to get your message across. Airing things like this so that children can and will see it is not one of them. I don’t care what your opinion or feeling is about a subject, you should not be able to pull a stunt like this. This country has sunk to an all time low for sure…

OK, Scout and the gang of faketriots, dupes, rubes, guppies and delusionists believe their prayers are going to be answered in one week.
And if they are right, and they gain majorities in both chambers, perhaps the round ups can begin in earnest. Hopefully with a great deal of violence and bloodshed, right cons?
Perhaps the wholesale destruction of the environment and planet can resume again in earnest.
Perhaps the nearing of the completion of the American plutocracy can continue unimpeded.
In spite of a plethora of reasons to not vote for modern day Joe McCarthys who are stuck in the 1950s, for me there is one issue that is paramount and is the measure by which I grade these men in Washington. And that is their support for the troops. (Or shocking lack thereof)
No, not that mindless slogan that the BushCorp neo-cons and cowardly chickenhawks contrived to justify doing the very opposite, but the real thing – helping active duty members and veterans, in a wide range of issues such as unemployment, homelessness, cutting claims backlogs, Invisible injuries, help for female veterans, streamlining the GI Bill and many others.
And not in the lest bit surprisingly guess who gets failing scores? Predominantly it is the Republican members of congress. Yet their ability to utterly fool the more ignorant in their die-hard base is very effective.
Here is a link to the votes on the major issues affecting GIs and veterans and how each member of congress voted. I encourage you to look at it very closely – even you cons who don’t want to know about the issues affecting members, present and past, of the US military.
For example in Georgia, the grades are as follows:
Kingston – C
Bishop – B
Westmoreland – D
Johnson – A
Lewis – F
Price – D

from SoCo’s CNN link…
“Legitimate candidate? They’ve gotta run the ad,” said Howard Kurtz, host of CNN’s “Reliable Sources.”
Does this mean I can force my local Fox affiliate to run interracial gay porn clips should I become a “legitimate candidate” against, say, some otherwise uncontested school board position, and pay for the political advertising myself?
hmm…

It would be an interesting experiment, wouldn’t it?

I am so sick of hearing about that stupid wall and keeping folks out. How do we know that Obamaniac din’t put up that fence to keep us in? How do we know Obama, who’s name reads “Osama” (if’n you’re playing the name game, or using Pig Latin), doesn’t want Christine Odonell to win her seat because he needs a fellow wiccan in his underworldly realm? How do we know? I’ll tell you: We Dont!
Why don’t we just accept that we had no business in Texas and Arizona in the first place. Hello. It were Mexico Proper then. The Mexicans, who invented the breakfast burrito, (which we also stole) should have built a fence to keep the Davy Crocketts and Ronald McDonalds out.
M
Mexico was established with borders, and it was Northern MExico. But no, that weren’t good enough for slave traders, who needed more land for slave owners, so they invaded Mexico with slavery, for which Mexico fought to destroy, as the Northern USA did just a scant generation later in a little thing called the Civil War.
THose who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Those who ignore FDA recommendations about their lunch are doomed to repeat it, too. (main FDA recommendation: no breakfast burritos)

How is it we can spend billions on two usless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but not be able to secure our own borders? Has anyone in our government noticed the drug wars in Mexico that are getting closer to us every day? Must we wait for a large number of American deaths from these drug wars before we get our troops out of Irag and Afghanistan and put them on the border where they belong?

The way they explained the law, I’d say you have a good shot at getting those campaign ads aired.

Actually in pig latin, it’s “Obamaway” which sounds like something Wayne and Garth would say, and the guy who played Wayne stood next to a guy who said that “George Bush doesn’t like black people”, which indisputably proves Obama is a racist.

Good Morning all y’all,
AmVet, your 8:17 is very good and very pointed.
I’m just keeping my mouth shut for a while. I want to see what the outcome of Novemer brings and to see if the American people are really that duped. Here in Georgia it’s pretty much a done deal, but in the other races accross the nation, I hope that the voters really wake up. But…if not, I’ll keep my mouth shut until June, 2011 (give ‘em six months to fix everything like they gave Obama), and then I’ll start pointing out things. I do agree that, in the long run, Scout and his ilk are going to be very dissappointed in the end.

“before we get our troops out of Irag and Afghanistan and put them on the border where they belong?”
US troops cannot be used for domestic law enforcement. They can only protect our borders from a MILIITARY invasion.

Just another example of George Bush and Republican failed policies. The problem with conservatives is they don’t think out problems because they are full of hate and want a fast, easy, costly solution.

The cheapest and most effective way to deal with this problem is to enforce the law against hiring them.

Yes, we have the technology, manpower and money to round them all up, send them back! Those who voluntarily turn themselves in, have no criminal record, have valid job available where they can be taxed appropriately, can pay or their employer pay for their health care, have no drug use or sale problem, and, agree that they have no right to US citizenship except through current rules, can be allowed a “guest worker” permit under the conditions that they must return to their home country every year for 30 to 60 days, and, any children that they have born here are not citizens of the US, but, are citizens of their home country!

The federal stimulus spending has kept a whole lot of people employed, who would otherwise have been jobless, and without taking a dime from taxpayers since the money was borrowed. Time will tell if it was worth it, but it’s foolish to say the stimulus failed now.
