A travelin’ music salute to those who taught us how

The REAL Jay Bookman, the first and the best Jay Bookman, happens to be my father, who’s been dealing with some medical issues this week. So, by the time this shows up on the innertubes, I hope to be driving down the interstate to spend some time with him and his lovely bride of some 55 years and counting.

So tonight’s travelin’ music goes out to my pops, and to my father-in-law Larry, out in California, who’s dealing with his own medical challenges this week. They taught us the way, and they teach us still, and I hope they’ll keep doing so for many years to come, because Lord knows we could still use the help.

JB, as I said, sometimes the music sounds better when we listen my dad turned 80 this year; got an early gift last year (Parkinson’s) and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for his 80th. Good news, Parkinson’s is in check and as his Dr. observed; you don’t have to worry about the lymphoma for another 10-15 years, and with Parkinson’s you don’t have two worry about being around in 15 years. yep, I am as blessed as an agnostic can be to have known my dad for 50 of the 52 he’s spent with his bride, and as as Dewey Cox observed; medical issues, aside; being both a son and a father is “a beautiful ride”.

No problem. I felt like recently I got a chance to reconnect with my grandfather. Before his accident, he owned a white 1963 Impala. He purchased it in 1984 (I think), and it had 8k original miles on it. It still had the factory tires, and the a/c still worked. Last month, I came across a white 1963 Impala with a price tag of $8K. Without hesitating, I purchased that car, and it also is almost 100% original with 81k miles. Working on that car makes me feel closer to my grandfather now than I’ve felt in years. I know all about that feeling of losing your best friend. My sympathies on your loss as well.

I’ve got a feeling about these Texas Rangers. They play good, aggressive, fundamental baseball. They’re an AL team but they basically play NL baseball. It’s been said, and I agree, that any organization takes on the personality of its leader, be it a sports team, a church, business, or whatever. This team has Nolan Ryan written all over it. No pitch counts (Nolan threw 200 pitches in a game several times), starting pitchers who want the ball and go deep in the game, without looking for bullpen help, at the first sign of trouble, and guys who can lay down a bunt, make a productive out, or take that extra base. It’s good to see the influence of the steroid era decling and a return to playing real baseball.

It was fitting that A Rod made the last out. Past history and all.

And Republicans need to de-fund NPR and force those liberals to fend for themselves if they want to silence voices they don’t agree with – like Air America – let the market decide their fate. But here’s a little side note to ponder: NPR’s Tavis Smiley has said that Christians are the most murderous religious populate on the planet. He still has his job the last time I checked.
Government Motors (or UAW Motors) and its minder, Obama, has touted the Chevrolet Volt as an ALL-electric car. But like so many things out of that incompetent administration, it’s just not true. When the car’s lithium-ion battery pack runs down and at speeds near at or above 70 mph, the Volt’s gasoline engine will directly drive the front wheels along with the electric motors. That’s not charging the battery. That’s driving the car. So it’s not an all-electric car, but rather a $40k+ hybrid that requires a taxpayer-funded $7,500 subsidy to get car shoppers behind the wheel.
There are now 10 days to the mid term elections. Democrats are out in full fraud force. Over 6,000 students at Winston-Salem University received e-mails Monday to take advantage of early voting and help the Democrat Party. After complaints, the university officials acknowledged that the e-mail — sent from the student-affairs division — was improper. Did anyone see CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, or NPR report this? Thought not.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has recently stated “lmmigrants should learn to speak German.” This is after attempts to build a multicultural society – the so-called “multikulti” concept – in Germany have “utterly failed”, as Chancellor Angela Merkel said. Another liberal social Utopian experiment goes down in flames. When will Europe learn? Check out France these days and how great socialism is working. The French workers are rioting in the streets because they might have to work another two years before getting their retirement pension. Oh the humanity. Spoiled-assed frogs.
The Blago trial has been delayed until after next year’s Chicago mayor “election.” And I do use quotes there because everyone knows Chicago’s elections are rigged and corrupt. When Rahmbo gets “elected” we’ll see what happens. Yeah he was subpoenaed as a defense witness in the first trial but never called to testify (hmmmmm).

1) Shouldn’t she be called “Obamette” ?
No, she should be called Kamala Harris, Mrs. Harris, or Ms. Harris depending on whether she’s married or not.

2) Why is she black instead of Indian ?
That goes back to the old “one drop of blood” mentality. One drop of negro blood meant that you were black no matter what your parents were. Old habits die hard. Also, maybe she identifies with being Black more than Indian. Or maybe she does not appear Indian when you see her. Why does it matter?

3) My father was Irish and my mother was German. Does that make me special ?

Juan Williams needs to sue that liberal NPR wretch who fired him for slander when she accused him of needing a psychiatrist for speaking his mind.

Oh so, we can sue our employer because they fired us for speaking our mind. That’s hilarous. You can be fired for anything and the courts will back them up, even badmouthing the boss on your own time and your own computer. NPR was right to fire him. CNN was right to fire Rick Sanchez. Enough said. End of story.

And about that massive red tide, the more these republicans speak about privatizing SS, Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Ad. etc. etc. the more the Democrats move up in the polls. People are waking up to what these people are about. Just let the GOP keep talking.

I found this artice to be a good read.

What Could Cause the Next Recession

A “policy mistake.” If Republicans take over one or both houses of Congress in the midterm elections, as expected, it will probably spell an end to President Obama’s reformist agenda. The conventional wisdom is that such a change would be good for businesses because they’d have less reason to worry about higher taxes or new regulations. But there are also many unknowns that would come with a split government and the gridlock it’s likely to entail.

If a new regime in Washington were to impose some kind of austerity program in order to tackle the national debt, it could shock markets that aren’t expecting that to happen for a couple of years, at least. It would also shock investors if Congress were to let all the Bush tax cuts expire on schedule at the end of 2010, effectively raising everybody’s taxes, since it’s widely expected that a lame-duck Congress will temporarily extend those measure for most taxpayers, if not all. In fact, any kind of move that disrupted government spending, added unexpectedly to the debt or changed much at all could rattle investor confidence. The irony for Republicans who want to rewrite Washington’s agenda is that a continuation of the status quo—including the full spendout of the 2009 stimulus funds—might be what the economy needs most.

Just a little something to think about when casting that vote. If the country’s interest is at heart, who will do what’s best for the country as opposed for the party???

My view on the Constitutional Amendments is this, always beware. I’ve voted under this Constitution and the previous one. The Amendments are almost always worded obtusely and the ones that are ratified, usually have lots of unintended consequences. So if you feel you should vote for one, then that’s what you should do, but if you have any doubt in your mind that it’s a wise thing to do, I’d recommend voting against it. That’s what I do and I normally wind up voting against the overwhelming majority of them.

It looks like a big red muffin….when I plug it in, it growls then stops. How do I know the things not gonna blow up?

There’s a little metal…sticky-out thing with a red rubber sleeve on it, kinda like a lever that can be switched back and forth. I’ve watched my husband flip it after he plugs in it. Is that a safety valve somethin’ or other?

How do I know when it’s in the right position? It doesn’t say on or off.

Is it supposed to growl consistently or intermittently?

When you plug it in, it growls because it’s running; it stops because it’s gotten to the tank shutoff pressure. That’s normal.

The little sticky out thing with the red rubber sleeve, is the on/off switch. Evidently, you have it in the on position. If you change it to off, it won’t run, no matter how low your tank pressure gets.

When your pressure reaches a certain preset level, the compressor will kick back on and run until it reaches shut-off pressure again.

Your compressor should/most likely does have a pop-off valve. In the event that the shutoff doesn’t work and the compressor keeps running, this valve will release pressure to keep the tank from being over-pressurized, ie: keep it from blowing up.

Most of the time, this valve has a little metal ring on it. To test it, just pull the metal ring and it should release pressure from the tank. It’ll be sorta like letting air out of your tire, only with more force. That valve is most likely screwed into the top of the tank somewhere. Sounds to me like your compressor is working fine, from your description.

The little sticky out thing with the red rubber sleeve, is the on/off switch.

The on/off switch is there to protect the motor from the initial power surge that happens when the compressor is first plugged in, so make sure you turn it off when you are done. More than likely it will depressurize while not in use, so when you plug it back in the next time you use it, remember to turn the switch to the “on” position.

If you are using a pneumatic nail gun—I know this is a self-evident kinda thing but, always make sure that your finger(s) are as far away from the nozzle of the nail gun as the length of the nail you are shooting. For example, if you are using 2″ nails, make sure your fingers are at least 2″ from where the nail comes out of the nail gun.

And Another one…..

Just when you think this president can’t get any more stupid, he goes and re-words our countries founding document so as not to offend atheists. Twice! So you know it is on purpose

And finally……

if Obama uses the name of the Lord, or any title that we have for Him in English, he would have to recite the Arabic blessing that they say after it. This would show the world that he is a muslim. He wouldn’t want to prove to the millions of American Patriots, who’ve been claiming this all along, that they are right, would he? Obamma is a MUSLIM, that’s why he doesn’t utter the name of the Lord in public, and it’s why he doesn’t even place his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. It would be honoring and acknowledging the U.S. as a Christian Nation.

Wise advice. People often get careless and forget that. Plus if you’re nailing two things together and you’re holding one, don’t forget that nail can and often does turn as it comes through. About nail guns,

It’s pretty common practice amongst “pros” to disable part of the safety features on nail guns in order to speed up their nailing. One thing I see folks do is disable the safety trigger that is released when you press the nailer against the surface where you plan to drive the nail. Further, I have to disagree with Kamchak’s safety advice in that his advice does not go far enough. Never, ever point that thing at any part of your body. I’ve seen nails do damage from much farther than a few inches away.

I’ve learned that sometimes you need an excape. You can’t always control real life. When things get way out of control, sometimes it’s best to excape for a minute or two so that you can regroup.

As far as Afghanistan, unless we nuke it and wipe it off the map, it’s a lost cause. There’s no definition of a “win” anymore. Instead of sticking to the primary mission which was AQ, we jumped off on all kinds of tangents.

Had I been Sect of Defense, the Afghanistan campaign would have lasted a month at the longest. I would have obliterated any and all signs of training camps and left the rest of the country alone. We have enough technology where we could have Tomahawked those mountains down to plateaus. Between guided muntions and B-52’s, I would not have left a blade of grass standing where training camps stood.

That’s just me, though. I wasn’t the one drawing up battle plans and such.

I was born at the tail end of that engagement, so you’ll have to understand any and all opinions I have are based on what I’ve seen, heard, or read. I think we “lost”, if you want to call it that, for a few different reasons.

#1 That was one of those engagements where we should not have been. However, I know the US is the police force for the world, so getting involved would have eventually happened anyway.

#2 Our military force is not one that is trained to be “observers” or nation builders. To equate our military with that type of job is to allow a brain surgeon to perform surgery on you using a chainsaw. The plan may eventually work, but it’s not the best use of the best equipment.

#3 Finally, politicians can not dictate how to fight war. Decisions on strategy are best left to the people on the ground who see the daily happenings and are best to change policy based on what they see. Politicians are best left to fund the machine and stay out of the way.

Here’s some more bad news for planet earth. And more junk science to be dismissed out of hand…

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2010) — The Arctic region, also called the “planet’s refrigerator,” continues to heat up, affecting local populations and ecosystems as well as weather patterns in the most populated parts of the Northern Hemisphere, according to a team of 69 international scientists.

Among the 2010 highlights:

* Greenland is experiencing record-setting high temperatures, ice melt and glacier area loss;
* Summer sea ice continues to decline — the 2009-2010 summer sea ice cover extent was the third lowest since satellite monitoring began in 1979, and sea ice thickness continues to thin. The 2010 minimum is the third lowest recorded since 1979, surpassed only by 2008 and the record low of 2007; and
* Arctic snow cover duration was at a record minimum since record-keeping began in 1966.

There is also evidence that the effect of higher air temperatures in the Arctic atmosphere in fall is contributing to changes in the atmospheric circulation in both the Arctic and northern mid-latitudes. Winter 2009-2010 showed a link between mid-latitude extreme cold and snowy weather events and changes in the wind patterns of the Arctic, related to a phase of the Arctic Oscillation.

I’d pretty much agree with your 1:37. We have a different view of things now, looking back, with the benefit of hindsight. We have to remember that everybody’s view is always colored by what has happened in the past, especially the recent past. All our leaders of the time, were viewing things through a WWII era mindset, because that’s what they knew. They had a tendency to see things through a “world conquest view”, because that’s what they’d been up against. And when Eisenhower first sent in advisers, it was about 10 years or so after WWII. Not very long.

I’d agree that the military isn’t for nation building. IF that’s what we want to do, we need an entirely different group for that. You can’t have the same people doing the job of the military and the Peace Corps, for instance. The locals aren’t going to see the distinction and more than likely are going to view them through their military role.

I think we all believe in civilian control of the military but it’s the politicians view to set policy, not micro-manage. The Commander-in-Chief should say, “our objective is to take “territory X”, and then get out of the way and let the military people handle it. His role from there should be an oversight role, and if things aren’t going the way he thinks they should, then change commanders or whatever.

GEOGRAPHY

Korea is a peninsula with a “DMZ” approximately 250 miles wide. As a result the DMZ could be “sealed” and even after over 50 years the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division helps secure it. Compare the thriving free society of South Korea vs. the North.

Vietnam is NOT a peninsula but the “DMZ” is only 53 miles wide. If Vietnam had been bordered on the west by the “Sea of Laos” we would not even be having this exchange. The U.S. 25th Infantry Division (or some other unit) would be on that “sealed” DMZ (of the “Vietnam Peninsula”) helping to secure it and South Vietnam would have remained a free nation.

Laos and Cambodia allowed the North Vietnamese to circumvent the South Vietnamese DMZ and that sealed their fate.

“TEHRAN, Iran – Iran has imposed new restrictions on 12 university social sciences deemed to be based on Western schools of thought and therefore incompatible with Islamic teachings, state radio reported Sunday.

Ah, the wonderful world of Islam #402 !”

given that christian fundamentalists would JUMP at the chance to have any mention of Darwin’s theory of evolution removed from our schools in order to have creationism taught in its place, Scout’s criticism is mighty rich …

Awaiting any proof you have whatsoever that I judge anyone as being a better American over another.

Here’s Dave R., on his fellow citizens, over at Ms. Tucker’s…

“As always with the libs, this is about control and power at the ballot box. The more you can control the lives of Americans with programs they want (regardless of the Constitutionality of them), the more you can control their vote every other November.”

“So when some of the libs and Hope & Change say that our taxes haven’t gone up since he took office, they’re lying through their teeth. ”

“the limited thinking of the American Idol generation who elected the least qualified person ever to be President “

That’d be nice, although in my experience that’s not generally how things work.

Will U2 tag-team tincture-swabs stfu? This is not your private chatroom. Either stay on topic, which is music, in fact, I’d have to say that you both enrage me because you act like you think you’re bigger than the Stones or something.

Now that’s on topic.

I think the unofficial-official rule among Bookmaniacs is that it’s poor form to go political on Friday afternoon/evening. If Jay doesn’t have a new topic up during the weekend, though, we’re not really about the music, the next day. Unless we want to.

Good morning all.

Yes it was most rude of the corporal to come and dump all over the Friday night music scene. Apparently he just wants to make sure nobody has any fun whenever he deems so, and is as constantly miserable as he is. As if six and a half days a week isn’t enough?

Yep another scorching summer around the planet, with near record global temperatures. Yet again.

But, don’t be concerned. There are dozens of explanations, all scientifically superior to the near universally accepted theory of AGW. Just ask Rush Limbaugh!

(But, I did read where one of his favorite science-free explanations – cow flatulence – has been eliminated.)

“Drunk Gets Tasered… again and again”

“Obnoxious drunk doesn’t get the picture until about the 5th time he gets shocked. Also – to the “police brutality” crowd – are you watching the same video? This is a state trooper in a rural post, his backup could be anywhere from 10-30 minutes away and probably from a different agency. Would you really want to get in to a physical struggle with someone if you have a tool at your disposal that will take care of the problem? Should you roll around and fight with the guy on the ground while trying to retain your firearm? The reason the guy keeps getting shocked is simple – he refuses to comply and keeps attempting to stand up and get back in his vehicle. Please… get a clue already.”
