NPR has fired senior news analyst Juan Williams, who also appears as a commentator on Fox News, for comments about Muslims that Williams made in an appearance with Bill O’Reilly.
“I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country,” Williams told host Bill O’Reilly during a discussion on the dilemma between fighting jihadists and fears about average Muslims.
“But when I get on a plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they’re identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous,” Williams said.
The truth is that as a commentator and analyst, Williams has been skating on his reputation for a long time, and the ice was getting thin. He had already given NPR cause for concern with previous statements on Fox, such as the time he inexplicably described Michelle Obama as “Stokely Carmichael in a designer dress.”
His denials of bigotry aside, Williams’ remarks this week validated a stereotype of all Muslims as terrorists just as a similar comment about black people — “When I get on a bus, if I see black people, I get worried, I get nervous” — validates a perception about black people as criminals.
There is no qualitative difference between the two stances. A very small percentage of black people are criminals, and a much much smaller percentage of Muslims are terrorists. But once you start defining the much larger group by the activities of that much smaller subset, you start down a very bad road.
NPR, in other words, acted appropriately.
Of course, that’s not how the incident is being taken by some on the right, where Williams is in the process of being sainted. At Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government site, the headline is “Screw Free Speech, NPR Fires Juan Williams for Muslim Remarks.” Williams’ fellow Fox News contributor, Sarah Palin, just tweeted to the effect that “NPR defends 1st Amendment Right, but will fire u if u exercise it. Juan Williams: u got taste of Left’s hypocrisy, they screwed up firing you.”
That’s nonsense. The First Amendment guarantees each of us the right to say whatever we wish, free of government interference. However, it does not guarantee us the right to be paid by NPR or anybody else to say whatever we wish. It certainly does not mean that we are free to make bigoted remarks on national television and be guaranteed a paycheck.
After James O’Keefe, the conservative guerrilla filmmaker and Breitbart’s one-time protege, launched a bizarre “seduction” of a CNN reporter recently, Breitbart cut him loose, calling O’Keefe’s antics “patently gross and offensive.” He wasn’t violating O’Keefe’s right to free speech by doing so, he was holding him accountable.
That’s all NPR has done with Williams.

Sorry, DebbieDoRight:
Your scenario is an attempt a humor (which is fine) just like my #3 scenario. All of the rest of my scenarios are actual events that happen all over this country everyday especially #5 (except the suspects are almost entirely of middle eastern descent).
No let’s discuss those and not your or my attempt at humor. Tell me what about any of those scenarios is racist. Those are nothing more than what Juan said …………. which is the REAL world instead of the politcally correct ivory tower crowd.

Well Scout I will admit I have a fear of males. I was almost raped while in college and ever since then I do not put myself in situations where I am the only female in a group or at an event — even if I know the men and believe that a few of them are my “friends”. I have come to learn that men in groups are like wild wolves in packs and can not be trusted, (Tailhook is a good example of this). So my scenario, although humorous, is my worst nightmare. So I guess I am in fact bigoted towards groups of men. But since the man who hired me and sent me back to college is male, AND my husband is male, etc. etc., I have better sense then to say that to THEM or to say it on national television.
If on television I will profess to having peni$ envy or something — anything to throw them offf the trail.

I hear you and certainly understand. I have always done my best to respect women but having been in the Marines, college and other occupations I realize there are some real, idiotic, male animals out there. And yes, animal is the correct word.
However, my point is if it’s true (which yours and Juans statements were) it shouldn’t matter whether you just think it OR say it on national television. Truth is truth even if it hurts. This whole event has really taken a hit at free speech.
It probably won’t be long (as is evidenced by the politician under trial in Holland) that what Juan said (or what I just posted) would be a considered a criminal offense. It’s also happening in Canada right now.

Comparing the pre-tax incomes of U.S. households in 2008 to those in 1979 provides an even starker contrast: while the bottom 90 percent of earners made almost $900 less in 2008 than in 1979, the top one percent brought in more than $700,000 more.

5) White male Irish terrorists have been attacking the United States for 20 years due to our support for Great Britain. They have become particularly adept at crashing airplanes into various buildings across the U.S. You are taking a business flight from Los Angeles to Japan. While you wait in the terminal area you hear four white males sitting behind you whispering to each other in a thick Irish brogue. Knowing that most Irish people are not terrorists, is it racist for me to be nervous and take another flight?
racism – –noun
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
No, it is not racist. Perhaps paranoid or prudent, but I think you are looking for another word.

Did NPR have a right to dump Juan Williams? Until someone takes a look at their contract, no one knows for sure. But for the sake of argument, let’s assume they did have the right to do so. Under the “actions have consequences” file, when a Republican majority comes into office in January of 2011 in the U.S. House, Congress has every right to cut funding for NPR (since such funding is un-Constitutional anyway) for not protecting 1st amendment rights of their employees.
Now, if they were a privately funded firm, they could get away with this, but as one who holds their hand out for Federal dollars each and every year, they should be careful where that hand goes when the people in charge of spending changes. And the incoming batch of Republicans are just looking for a reason to cut funding anywhere.

“For the third time in just over one month, President Obama has refused to include any mention of the “Creator” in his recitation of the Declaration of Independence.
Repeatedly now the president has simply said Americans are endowed with certain rights, but persistently refuses to acknowledge with the Founders that these rights are a gift from God.
He stripped God from our founding document on September 15 (video here) when speaking to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. He did it again on September 23 at a fundraiser in New York City. And he did it yet a third time on Monday night at in Rockville, Md. when speaking to Democratic Senate candidate donors.
This can no longer by any stretch of the imagination be considered unintentional or accidental. President Obama is deliberately stripping our Christian heritage from us right before our very eyes.”

I’d definitely vote for Herman…work for his campaign too.
We all know what the left would do though. They’d accuse conservatives of promoting a token. The same attack they launched when Michael Steele became Chairman of the RNC.
It’s what they do.

And Condoleeza Rice? According to left-wingers she was a “house mammy” or some such. Several derogatory names they applied to Dr. Rice. Can’t recall them all.

Karl Denninger, an original organizer of the Tea Party, is out with a livid blog post blasting leaders of the conservative movement and the apparent hypocrisy in their views of the economic issues that originally catalyzed its creation. According to Denninger, ”Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Bob Barr, and douxxhe-bag groups such as the Tea Party Patriots” are to blame for the baxtardization of a movement that now seems focused on ”guns, gays, god,” instead of the Tea Party’s original mission: to castigate the federal government for supporting the ”rampant theft” of taxpayers dollars that went toward ”propping up FAILED private businesses.”
In short, The Tea Party was and is about the corruption of American Politics and the blatant and outrageous theft from all Americans that has resulted. It is about personal responsibility and enforcement of the law against those who have robbed, financially xxxxd and pillaged the nation. Tea Party my xxx. This was nothing other than The Republican Party stealing the anger of a population that was fed up with The Republican Party’s own theft of their tax money at gunpoint to bail out the robbers of Wall Street and fraudulently redirecting it back toward electing the very people who stole all the xxxxing money!

Sarkozy wants to raise the retirement age to pay for tax cuts for the rich.
Both France and Germany are for kicking out immigrants and are cons destroying their countries like cons done here.

Condi Rice is extremely intelligent but soft spoken, however in a one on one debate the opposition would be foolish to take her lightly. Herman Cain on the other hand can be as aggressive as he needs to be, so a “token” label wouldn’t stick on him. It could be an interesting ticket. Do I think it or a variation with Cain in the lead will come to pass, I don’t know but I’d bet he could win.

Mr.Beck offered an entire hour, commercial-free, for an interview.
