Anita Hill, Mrs. Thomas wants to chat … not really

Well isn’t this special?

From the Wall Street Journal:

Nearly 20 years after sexual harassment allegations almost derailed Clarence Thomas’s Supreme Court nomination, the justice’s wife telephoned Anita Hill, his principal accuser, to seek an apology.

Virginia Thomas

Virginia Thomas

“I did place a call to Ms. Hill at her office extending an olive branch to her after all these years, in hopes that we could ultimately get past what happened so long ago,” Virginia Thomas said through a spokesman. Mrs. Thomas, a longtime conservative activist, has lately taken a more visible role by founding a tea-party group called Liberty Central.

Ms. Hill, now a professor at Brandeis University, said she didn’t take Mrs. Thomas’s Oct. 9 voicemail as conciliatory.

“I certainly thought the call was inappropriate,” Ms. Hill said through a Brandeis spokesman. “I have no intention of apologizing because I testified truthfully about my experience and I stand by that testimony.”

Ms. Hill said she initially assumed the call, which a Brandeis spokesman said came in at 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday, was a prank. She notified campus security, Brandeis spokesman Charles Radin said, which in a routine procedure alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation….

“Good morning, Anita Hill, it’s Ginni Thomas,” the message went. “I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. So give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. Okay have a good day.”

In the first place, if that’s an olive branch in the hands of Virginia Thomas, it’s an olive branch about two inches in diameter, trimmed of leaves and twigs and suitable for use as a cudgel.

Second, it’s a pretty spineless way of approaching things. If you call someone at her office at 7:30 on a Saturday morning, you clearly don’t want a conversation. You’re hoping to plant your little timebomb and scurry away.

Third, the phone call is probably an exercise in crass publicity-seeking. According to Mrs. Thomas, her group, Liberty Central, was created to fight the tyranny of Barack Obama and “will be bigger than the Tea Party movement.” On the Liberty Central site, she describes herself as “a fan of Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham and other talk radio hosts. She is intrigued by Glenn Beck and listening carefully. She also enjoys motor homing and watching ‘24′.”

The organization is funded through anonymous donations, made possible by the Citizens United decision in which Mrs. Thomas’ husband, Clarence, cast one of the five majority votes.

So you ‘know’ that she doesn’t really want to extend an olive branch? What if she does and she’s just not good at it?

Typical conservative “olive branch”. Ms. Hill should just say no to Mrs. Thomas’ unsolicited advances. Perhaps send her a hair sample suitable for DNA analysis as a consolation prize.

Well, I got no dog in this fight. On one hand this Judge Thomas is a strong Conservative. On the other hand he’s one of Those People—blacker than the ace of spades. It’s sort of like watching your mother-in-law drive over a cliff in your new Cadillac. All I know is I might could call somebody at 7:30 in the a.m. on Saturday if I never had much use for them and wanted to keep them from sleeping in.

Maybe other people can figure it out. Me, I got hauling to do. Have a good day everybody.

The level of immaturity and shallowness Mrs. Thomas displays by this action is stunning. Here she is a spouse of a sitting Supreme Court Justice, supposedly carrying a torch for freedom and the constitution and she is demanding that a person “retroactively” be denied freedom of speech. Her entire message could be summed up in three words “take it back”! Ms. Hill, as has been her history, responded with the class she has always displayed. Has anybody seen her lately? I have, she has gotten fine like a good wine!

My health insurance premiums have increased every year for at least the last ten years. Just last year, before your so-called “Obamacare”, my insurance premiums jumped over thirty percent even though I have not even been to a doctor for five years and then it was only for an allergic reaction to poison ivy. I did reach the ripe old age of 55 last year though. Now I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens when I hit sixty. (Not really. I’ve already plotted some numbers and found that health insurance premiums have tended to rise in a rather predictable pattern — they experience a step increase every five years with a slower linear increase each year between the step increases. How else can a insurance company CEO justify his compensation if not through a steadily increasing YOY return that covers actual annual cost increases plus twenty percent.)

“he does not have an R after his name.”

And you can blame Obama, Pelosi, and Reid for that one. It seems that most people don’t want to have anything to do w/ Democrats.

Night Train – “Nothing on Roy Barns and his trying cases in front of judges he appointed yet, eh Jay?”

Is attacking the messenger the best you can do?

There is plenty of ammo in the column and the WSJ article if you take the time to think.

There is the appropriateness of the spouse of a Supreme Court Justice leading a political action committee. There is the constitutional right of the spouse to do so. And, there is still, after all these years, the question of whether the Senate Judiciary Committee should allowed “she said, he said” testimony into the confirmation hearing.

For years I have believed that the way Supreme Court nominees are treated is a disgrace to the nation. Bork, Thomas and the more recent Miers, Sotomayor and Kagan nominations are just a reflection of the deterioration of the nomination process.

Dang, too bad Mrs. Thomas does this on a week when Colbert and Stewart are on vacation!

I bet they would have us rolling in the aisles on this.

“Almost all of the largest U.S. banks are either already making free checking much more difficult to get or expected to do so soon, with fees on even basic banking services.

It’s happening because a raft of new laws enacted in the past year, including the financial overhaul package, have led to an acute shrinking of revenue for the banks. So they are scraping together money however they can.

“I’ve seen more regulation in last 30 months than in last 30 years,” said Robert Hammer, CEO of RK Hammer, a bank advisory firm.”

Thanks, Obama…..
