Nazi hobbyist as congressional candidate? And it’s OK?

Rich Iott is the Republican candidate to represent Ohio’s Ninth Congressional District, a seat now held by Democrat Marcy Kaptur. But as Josh Green of the Atlantic points out, Iott has had a rather unusual hobby for someone with ambitions of serving his country in Congress.

He likes to dress up in the uniform of the Waffen SS.

GOP congressional candidate Rich Iott, second from right, in the uniform of a Waffen SS officer.

GOP congressional candidate Rich Iott, second from right, in the uniform of a Waffen SS officer.

For several years, in fact, Iott was a member of a group calling itself the Wikings, created to honor those who fought in World War II in the 5th SS Panzer Division. The division comprised volunteers to the Nazi cause drawn from outside Germany. As the Wiking site explains:

Nazi Germany had no problem in recruiting the multitudes of volunteers willing to lay down their lives to ensure a “New and Free Europe”, free of the threat of Communism. National Socialism was seen by many in Holland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and other eastern European and Balkan countries as the protector of personal freedom and their very way of life, despite the true underlying totalitarian (and quite twisted, in most cases) nature of the movement. Regardless, thousands upon thousands of valiant men died defending their respective countries in the name of a better tomorrow. We salute these idealists; no matter how unsavory the Nazi government was, the front-line soldiers of the Waffen-SS (in particular the foreign volunteers) gave their lives for their loved ones and a basic desire to be free.

5-1

Idealists, in the name of a better tomorrow, motivated by a basic desire to be free. Lovely.

As the Wiking site goes on to explain, “It is our aim to bring you a bit of actual history behind the men who fought against the “Bolshevik scourge”; volunteers who came from the various Northern European countries allied with Hitler’s Germany who only had a desire to see an end to Soviet Communism.”

Iott explains his former hobby by likening it to Civil War re-enacters, noting that “you couldn’t do Civil War re-enacting if somebody didn’t play the role of the Confederates.”

“I’ve always been fascinated by the fact that here was a relatively small country that from a strictly military point of view accomplished incredible things,” Iott told Green. “I mean, they took over most of Europe and Russia, and it really took the combined effort of the free world to defeat them. From a purely historical military point of view, that’s incredible.”

Iott’s explanation, strained as it is, might be slightly more convincing if he and his friends had chosen to emulate a standard unit of the German Army, or Wehrmacht. The moral culpability of draftees conscripted into the German military is at least arguable.

Instead, they chose to emulate a division of the Waffen SS, a volunteer arm of the Nazi Party that played a prominent role in the wholesale slaughter of 6 million Jews and millions of other “undesirables.” In fact. the infamous Josef Mengele served in the 5th division early in the war, and it was directly implicated in several mass murders of Jewish captives.

Armed with this information, the people of the Ohio Ninth will no doubt cast their own judgment on Iott at the ballot box this November. But what I find fascinating is the reaction to the discovery. Here we’ve got a congressional candidate as a member of a group touting Nazi SS volunteers as idealists fighting for freedom, yet prominent right-wing blogs (here and here and here, for example) are defending Iott as a victim of liberal smears.

Green is creating an issue where one really doesn’t exist, we’re told, because dressing like the Waffen SS is “basically like the reenactors who play the Red Coats in American Revolution reenactments.” This is just another example of “shoddy political hackery” by liberal journalists, a “pathetic attack” by leftists ready to “smear anyone for anything if they think it might help them hold onto power.”

In other words, they’re all right with this behavior, and are willing to defend it.

Sooooo …Bookman goes all the way to Ohio to blast a Republican candidate. Musta been next on the list. True, that the man has an unusual hobby but is it illegal? NO. Does it sound good ? No. You can even impersonate the devil and it isn’t illegal.

I don’t plan to vote in Ohio . Maybe Bookman will. . He’s mighty torn up about a strange hobby especially if it is a Republican’s strange hobby. Bookman’’s hobby is running down Republicans. Is that illegal? No. Does it sound good? NO. I guess there will always be a few strange people in this world. .Sooo what’s new???

OK, I’ll cut this guy some slack because I was once Jesus for Halloween, but let’s be clear, I never understood the “re-enactment” mentality. we’re talking about WAR, folks. as Scout points out, the NVA was regarded as one of military history’s most dedicated, professional armies. hey, I have an idea; let’s get John McCain and some of his Navy buddies and we can “re-enact” the Hanoi Hilton? if this clown “admires” the sacrifice and dedication of the Waffen SS, write a freaking book, or produce a special for the History Channel. as a previous post notes, this isn’t really even news. did we not discss Newt Gingrich’s revisionist history? Germany invaded and occupied most of Western Europe and the Soviet Union, but it was unsuccessful “from a strictly military objective”. this is the same type of semantic cherry-picking. maybe somebody should ask this fool about the deadication of the 18 al Qeada terrorists who murdered 3,000 Americans on 9/11? does he not think (generous word, it would appear he is not capable of actual “thought” – he’s more rote behavior) radical Islam is as “concerned” about American capitalism/Christianity, as the Nazi’s were concerned about Bolsheviks and Communism?

-The nation’s payrolls dropped for the fourth straight month, shedding a more-than-expected net
-total of 95,000 jobs.

The only reason unemployment did not go up is fewer people are looking for work.

Right now Attila the Hun could beat a Democrat.

Kamchak, I suspect the candidate’s association with that group is a political maneuver, and it says a lot about his judgement. I’m just saying I’m tired of the the way it gets dissected in blogs… people making meaningless generalizations about groups, when each one of those generalizations can be further broken down until we’re left with a world full of individuals

Well, I am Jewish and Jay is not. Both Bookman and Nix are fine, old Anglo-Saxon surnames. You need to get a new scorecard.

Liberals painting conservatives/republicans as Nazis…

This was more of a self-portrait.

But don’t let that get in the way of your poutrage.
++++++++
So would the left complaining about the right labeling Obama a Socialist or a Communist be a self portrait.

Always be careful of the argument you make because they can be used against you. Iot-Nazi(even though the group has a disclaimer against) Obama-Wright (even though he condemn Wright).

You’re comparing altered pictures (where a person did not appear as portrayed) with an incident where a person willingly donned the uniform of one of the most vilified armed forces of the twentieth century?

Like I said earlier—rationalizing, not rational.

Please show me a picture where Obama willing dressed himself as a prominent socialist or communist.

Thanks in advance.

I’ll bet this candidate is being intensely questioned about his strange hobby. The voters in Ohio will decide if his explanation is satisfactory enough to deserve their vote. Strange hobbies aren’t a disqualifier for public office. This could be a valid concern or it could be a smear job in an attempt to turn the election. Jay’s commentary doesn’t prove anything one way or the other.

Ohhh BADA BING

You will be right next door to the Chiliean miners. That is the most breath taking wondrous disaster I have experienced in many a day. Just to think about those miners, trapped so far underground, waiting so long, and yet to experience the dangerous ascent to sunlight. If ever I wished well for a group, this is one of them.

But anyway, have a “high” time in the Andes. Your head will be in the clouds. You won’t even miss us groundlings!!

Hi Jay,
I respect the fact that you dig out little known facts to bring
attention to issues such as this candidates background. I wonder
though, do you look as hard for ‘truth’ such as this with
Democratic candidates? Can you cite some examples?

thanks,
kendall loper

He was right in saying that it was incredible how one small country almost took all of Europe and Russia. It is also incredible how England resisted for so long, and how the Jews survived their torment, and how a bunch of farm boys from America came together to form the best fighting force the World has ever seen. WW2 was like that. It will always be remembered as the best and the worst that human behavior has to offer.
