Rich Iott is the Republican candidate to represent Ohio’s Ninth Congressional District, a seat now held by Democrat Marcy Kaptur. But as Josh Green of the Atlantic points out, Iott has had a rather unusual hobby for someone with ambitions of serving his country in Congress.
He likes to dress up in the uniform of the Waffen SS.

GOP congressional candidate Rich Iott, second from right, in the uniform of a Waffen SS officer.
For several years, in fact, Iott was a member of a group calling itself the Wikings, created to honor those who fought in World War II in the 5th SS Panzer Division. The division comprised volunteers to the Nazi cause drawn from outside Germany. As the Wiking site explains:
Nazi Germany had no problem in recruiting the multitudes of volunteers willing to lay down their lives to ensure a “New and Free Europe”, free of the threat of Communism. National Socialism was seen by many in Holland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and other eastern European and Balkan countries as the protector of personal freedom and their very way of life, despite the true underlying totalitarian (and quite twisted, in most cases) nature of the movement. Regardless, thousands upon thousands of valiant men died defending their respective countries in the name of a better tomorrow. We salute these idealists; no matter how unsavory the Nazi government was, the front-line soldiers of the Waffen-SS (in particular the foreign volunteers) gave their lives for their loved ones and a basic desire to be free.

Idealists, in the name of a better tomorrow, motivated by a basic desire to be free. Lovely.
As the Wiking site goes on to explain, “It is our aim to bring you a bit of actual history behind the men who fought against the “Bolshevik scourge”; volunteers who came from the various Northern European countries allied with Hitler’s Germany who only had a desire to see an end to Soviet Communism.”
Iott explains his former hobby by likening it to Civil War re-enacters, noting that “you couldn’t do Civil War re-enacting if somebody didn’t play the role of the Confederates.”
“I’ve always been fascinated by the fact that here was a relatively small country that from a strictly military point of view accomplished incredible things,” Iott told Green. “I mean, they took over most of Europe and Russia, and it really took the combined effort of the free world to defeat them. From a purely historical military point of view, that’s incredible.”
Iott’s explanation, strained as it is, might be slightly more convincing if he and his friends had chosen to emulate a standard unit of the German Army, or Wehrmacht. The moral culpability of draftees conscripted into the German military is at least arguable.
Instead, they chose to emulate a division of the Waffen SS, a volunteer arm of the Nazi Party that played a prominent role in the wholesale slaughter of 6 million Jews and millions of other “undesirables.” In fact. the infamous Josef Mengele served in the 5th division early in the war, and it was directly implicated in several mass murders of Jewish captives.
Armed with this information, the people of the Ohio Ninth will no doubt cast their own judgment on Iott at the ballot box this November. But what I find fascinating is the reaction to the discovery. Here we’ve got a congressional candidate as a member of a group touting Nazi SS volunteers as idealists fighting for freedom, yet prominent right-wing blogs (here and here and here, for example) are defending Iott as a victim of liberal smears.
Green is creating an issue where one really doesn’t exist, we’re told, because dressing like the Waffen SS is “basically like the reenactors who play the Red Coats in American Revolution reenactments.” This is just another example of “shoddy political hackery” by liberal journalists, a “pathetic attack” by leftists ready to “smear anyone for anything if they think it might help them hold onto power.”
In other words, they’re all right with this behavior, and are willing to defend it.

Funny you should bring up Squirrel. I was just watching two of ours at the birdfeeder. They took to chattering looking at us and Unmentionable says, “makes you wish you spoke Squirrel, doesn’t it? Wonder what it is they’re calling us?”

Now that’s a thought (you must be very lean). What will they actually do with the fat ones? Leave ‘em behind until they are thin, as you sugggested? The thought of getting stuck in a pipe half mile underground gives me acute claustrophobia.!!!!! But Chilian Miners diet? If necessary, I will stick with Jenny Craig (without the pipe)..

The squirrels are tired of my bird feeder and are now digging in anything green I put out side. I placed a pretty little plant on the patio table and the fox squirret dug a big hole right down to the roots. I’m sure it was ol’ foxy.
Then I went to a meeting and a few ladies were almost hysterical because a squirrel had chewed through the ceiling in an adjacent room and had surprised them when they opened the door. He was upset too. Obviously. Some things had to be thrown out. Anyway, the great broom brigade chased him out an open door and victory was declared. I must say it was the most interesting event in the meeting.

As to RW, step up and declare yourself: Would this information be enough to dissuade you from voting for Iott, if he was on your ballot?
Yes or no. I have given my answer; what’s yours?

First, you wouldn’t have voted for him anyway so that is pure baloney argument. Your really just trying to smear him.
I would have to say it would affect my vote but would not be a determining factor just like Obama association with Wright affected my vote but was not a determining factor. In fact now Obama association with Wright wouldn’t have any affect because I have see more of what Obama stands for which seems to contradict what Wright stated.
A more relevant factor for me is in the case of Deal where it seems he has done some unethical business deals with the state.

“In the early 1940s, (Senator) Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.
According to Byrd, a Klan official told him, “You have a talent for leadership, Bob … The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation.” Byrd later recalled, “suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities! I was only 23 or 24 years old, and the thought of a political career had never really hit me. But strike me that night, it did.” Byrd held the titles Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops. When it came time to elect the “Exalted Cyclops,” the top officer in the local Klan unit, Byrd won unanimously.
In 1944, Byrd wrote to segregationist Mississippi Senator Theodore Bilbo:
“ I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side … Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds. ”
— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944,
In 1946 or 1947 Byrd wrote a letter to a Grand Wizard stating, “The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the nation.”

Uh, the guy who is second from the left is wearing a Black Watch tartan kilt and a World War II-era Royal Air Force blouse.
Unfortunately, the AJC has mislabeled the photo, and the candidate in question is actually SECOND FROM THE RIGHT, and is wearing a Waffen SS officer’s field uniform.
IMHO, that’s a d@mn strange hobby for a conservative Republican . . .
but I guess that’s no stranger than our President associating with former terrorists who tried to kill members of our Armed Forces during the Vietnam War (Bill Ayres), advocates of democratic socialism and left-wing protest movements (Saul Alinsky), and Black Nationalist Liberation Theology (Rev. Jeremiah Wright).
As a Republican, a conservative and the son of a World War II veteran who fought the fascists and Nazis, I am only too happy to throw poor Mr. Iott under the bus because of his odd extracurricular activities. So, Jay, are you willing to do the same for our President and his collection of ant-American, anti-capitalist, antisemitic, and pro-socialism associates? Hmm?
Never mind. I know your answer already. Anything wacky done by a Democrat is completely excusable, right? The irony is that Iott apparently only dresses up as an SS officer. Obama has political friends who actually believe that capitalism is evil, the Jews are the origin of everything wrong with America and the world, that it’s okay to plant bombs in an attempt to kill U.S. military personnel as an acceptable form of political protest .
Ironic, huh?
So, save your feigned outrage. I’m still waiting for you to behave like an objective journalist, not a paid flack for the Democrat Party.

Nazis suck. Period. People that wear nazi uniforms also suck.
On another un-related note, I went to the grocery today to buy a chicken. In front of me in the checkout line was an EXTREMELY obese woman with weaves in her hair and painted finger-nails. I was watching the cash register read-out ringing up her bill and this is a list of what she bought;
$142.00 worth of New York Strip Steaks (at $4.99/lb).
$24.00 worth of hotdogs.
$15.00 worth of sodas.
$9.00 worth of hotdog buns.
$52.00 worth of center cut pork chops and barbecue sauce.
$10.00 dollars worth of potato chips.
No beans, no milk, no rice, no bread (other than the hotdog buns) and no vegetables, just these things.
When this woman went to pay for it, guess what? She pulled out a Georgia Foodstamp Credit Card (the one with the big peach on it).
The cashier asked her, “you must be going to have a cookout”.
And the response was, “Me and my friends are cooking out by the lake tonight”.
How long can we exist as a country with this mentality when we have 48 million people out there who are on foodstamps. The abuse must be incredible. I have seen some recipients that actually do spend their money wisely but by and large, the food types chosen by the food stamp recipients are usually the kind that deliver the least amount of nutrition for the most money. And they are the kind that make them and their children obese (processed frozen foods, chips and sodas).
If the government is going to have a food program it should administered in much in the same manner as the commodity program was administered in the 60’s and early 70’s. At least the recipients could only get food of nutrional value. Not sodas, frozen pizzas and steaks that most of us can’t afford.

I have read most of the articles and I have not seen a person who appear to be Nazi apologists. I do not believe it is a good thing to dress up as a NAZI. In fact I believe the guy has allot of explaining to do especially to vets and Jewish people. However, I also believe that people make mistakes in their lives many time without realizing the full ramifications of what they are doing. I had an Uncle who fought in the Pacific who would be greatly offended by someone who was a Japanese soldier reenactor but at the same time I believe what is more important is what the guy believes in and what he thinks.

Alright, to me this behavior seems strange but at the same time if we condemn everyone for strange behavior we would have to condemn everyone.
I personally believe the civil war was one of the greatest tragedies in American history. Why would we want to glorify it? But that is just my take on it.
In WWII 20 million Russians died at the hands of the Germans. Russian had the most loss of life than any other country. They were not fight for communism they were fighting for Russia. I think reenacting such a tragedy is sad. But again that is just my take on it.

Just substitute “Jewish” for “Bolshevik” and you have the key to unlock how this mentality operates.

Scroll down to Germany. I dare say that with that many groups, there’s bound to be participants who vote Democrat.
Now…about that stimulus money that’s gone missing. The 72,000 stimulus payments that were mailed to dead people? Didn’t the same thing happen last year?

I personally don’t care what anyone does in their personal life, as long as it doesn’t encroach on their professional life in public office.
Here’s a thought: Why don’t we just stick to the ISSUES of jobs, the economy, and getting government spending under control, shall we? All these other inane things Jay posts about are juvenile and nothing more than a distraction from the aforementioned issues.
And on the issue of atrocities, while the Confederates can’t hold a candle to the N a z i s or especially the Japanese during WWII (a story that hasn’t truly been told properly regarding our Eastern cousins), Andersonville prison wasn’t exactly a cakewalk. Yet you don’t hear anyone from the South (liberals or conservatives) complaining much about War of Northern Aggression re-enactments, do you?

“It is my understanding that Byrd began apologizing for his association with the KKK many years ago…”
It is my understanding that the Wiking site posts a pretty clear disclaimer (RW @ 2:42) condemning real Nazis and their supporters. It is also pretty clear that Lott participates in other reenactments (Steven @ 3:43). Yet you libs want to use this to gain political points–not only against Lott, but the GOP in general. (Given the many Nazi references directed towards the GOP by libs–some of which I’ve already referenced–this is the not-so-subtle attempt here.) Again: This is a lame and desperate attempt by a party facing dire political consequences in a matter of days.

Again, as long as it isn’t illegal to do so, what matters if he does engage in this in his free time, as long as he’s consistent in his beliefs on public issues that people who vote can agree on?
If you don’t like his stance on the issues, don’t support him or vote for him.
We’d be a lot better off if we just stayed out of others private lives.

Abortion illegal? Why shouldn’t it be Amvet?
How, in the name of all that is reasonable, can all of you who claim to be “champions for science” –standing fervently behind the flimsy “science” of man-made global warming and Darwinian evolution–while ignoring what science has revealed about the unborn?
Unlike the above mentioned pseudo-sciences, there is overwhelming real evidence supporting the pro-life position when it comes to a child in its mother’s womb. In fact, few things in science are as well documented as is the life in the womb for a baby. With ultrasound and Doppler machines, as well as other technology, one can monitor the life of a child in the womb from very near the beginning until birth. Yet foolish liberals ignore this clear evidence and scream about “choice” and a woman’s “right to control her body.”

Certainly there are many more. I have my own particular interests in Camp Douglass and Ft. Delaware.
I have never quite understood why Andersonville emerges as the iconic and symbolic when the death rates from outright murder, disease, and starvation were proportionately higher in a number of northern pow camps when there was plenty of food and medicine available.

Trouble with the Pro-Life faction is that they really aren’t. They are just pro fetus. They don’t give a wank about life. If they did, there would be no gripe from them about Social Security or Medicare for the elderly. They would demand programs and support for the betterment of the lives they say they are trying to save.
No sir, until that happens, spare me the emotional clap trap about abortion. I thought y’all wanted Government out of your lives, for chrissakes! Abortion is the woman’s right if she should want it, and then she can explain the reason to the Creator, if it comes to that, and I doubt it will. Quit acting so high and mighty, it makes you look silly!

As for the lamebrain with this otherwise revolting and exceptionally embarrassing habit, I agree that in and of itself, it is not the most important aspect of this candidate.
Having just looked at his website, What is, is that for the most part he is another garden variety far right wing nut job and Bush “Mission Accomplished” apologist…
Wow, TGT! I was simply looking for a simple yes or no. Not a two course supper of red herrings justifying the widely repudiated positions of the AGW deniers and a virtually universally accepted 150 year old theory.
So with your fervent desire to make abortion illegal again, I presume you would force women to have these babies, correct?
Would you imprison them if they don’t? Or exercise capital punishment, as they are murderers?
