I very much believe — and hope — that nothing is going to top this story in terms of pure strangeness. But the way things are going, that hope may prove to be false.
You may remember James O’Keefe, the conservative hero and “filmmaker” made famous by his ACORN work. Apparently, young Master O’Keefe wanted to find a way to “punk” and embarrass CNN, and to do so he set in motion a plan to lure a CNN reporter, Abbie Boudreau, onto a Maryland houseboat on the pretext of doing an interview.
The boat was to be outfitted with hidden cameras and other items, as detailed in the “equipment list” later acquired by CNN and republished below. O’Keefe then intended to try to seduce Boudreau, on hidden camera, and later release the video as some sort of triumph.
As CNN itself reports:
According to the document, O’Keefe was to record a video of the following script before Boudreau arrived: “My name is James. I work in video activism and journalism. I’ve been approached by CNN for an interview where I know what their angle is: they want to portray me and my friends as crazies, as non-journalists, as unprofessional and likely as homophobes, racists or bigots of some sort….
“Instead, I’ve decided to have a little fun. Instead of giving her a serious interview, I’m going to punk CNN. Abbie has been trying to seduce me to use me, in order to spin a lie about me. So, I’m going to seduce her, on camera, to use her for a video. This bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who comes on at five will get a taste of her own medicine, she’ll get seduced on camera and you’ll get to see the awkwardness and the aftermath.”
The plot was apparently foiled only at the last minute by a female colleague of O’Keefe’s, who intercepted Boudreau right before the meeting and confessed the scheme.
Go read CNN’s account. It has more details and weirdness than I can include here. I thought the Shirley Sherrod debacle was probably as low as this kind of thing could go, but clearly I had no idea.
There is something deeply sick, even depraved, about these people.

Mr. O’Keefe is following a sad but predictable arc. First it was fraud, then breaking and entering for illegal wiretapping, now conspiracy to rape. He is clearly acting out some psychosis and will increase the severity of his “punks” until he is caught, convicted, and achieves his ultimate goal: to be locked in a cell with a very large tattooed inmate with a life sentence and nothing to lose. Hope you kept some lube in your pocket, James. You’re gonna need it!

Thoughts:
Who cares?
Why is CNN considered a reliable source on a story which involves CNN? I wouldn’t trust BP to self report on issues involving their company.
Why would anybody trust this O’Keefe to meet him alone after this?

Mr. O’Keefe is on probation for his unathorized recording of an ACORN employee in California. Refer that matter to the judge and ask for the revocation of his probation. If you make these so-called conservatives stand up to their actions, stops the madness right in its tracks.

video activism…thats a new term that I’ve never heard before, but fits the bill in today’s media industry. There are very few “journalists” left. I ran into my old college journalism professor a few years ago before he passed away and the number one issue he had with his profession (not teaching) was the failure of reporters to remain neutral when reporting the news (Yes, Mr. Bookman, this definitely includes you and CT and most of the AJC). Today, all you get are slanted views based on politics and ideologies. Thank the Good Lord above I got out of this profession years ago.

Why was Abbie Boudreau pursuing and interview with O’Keefe?
What was she willing to do in order to obtain the interview?
Does Boudreau have a reputation for being easy?
If not then, other than her willingness to do anything to get the interview with him, why would O’Keefe think he had a chance to seduce her?
Unless the video showed that Boudreau was willing to do most anything for the interview, how would the video hurt CNN rather than Okeefe?

I think he is smart enough to know that this will keep him in the news much longer than the allotted 15 minutes. You played right into his hands.
Second, do you really think that there was ANY POSSIBILITY that this CNN reporter was naive enough to fall for something so sophomoric? Of Course NOT. Surely you don’t believe that James was that naive. This is undoubtedly the REAL punk. As I said, I’ve seen a survey of real economists; general consensus seemed to be in the 40-60% top rate. Plus, historically, we had a lot of real economic growth in the ’50s, when the top marginal rate was 91%. If I was guessing (and that’s all I’m doing) I’d like to see a new tax bracket at the $1 million level. And let’s peg the rate at 45%. But my point is that we could probably raise the top marginal rates and still be at the top of the Laffer curve.

1. It would devalue the outstanding foreign debt we have (including what we owe the Chinese).
2. It would make U.S. goods cheaper in the international market, with the effect of increasing our exports.

The right wing loves to speculate that our rich will “take their ball” and leave the country. And I say . . . good riddence. This country was built on creation of the wealthy. Because she is an investigative correspondent.
Her record stand on it own merits. She has received seven regional Emmys for investigative reporting, writing and enterprise journalism. She has been the correspondent for two documentaries, “Campus Rage” and “Joe Biden Revealed”. She also co-hosted a one-hour special called “Fall of the Fat Cats.” In a four-month investigation, she revealed how, over two years, FEMA had stored $85 million worth of new household supplies that were meant for Katrina victims, but ended up giving them away to various government agencies, such as prisons. The investigation, “Hurricane Giveaway”, prompted the return of many of those items to Louisiana, where victims still needed basic supplies. The series was nominated for a national Emmy award.
This year, she and Senior Investigative Producer Scott Zamost won a first place National Headliner Award for “Post Office Mansion,” which revealed how the U.S. Postal Service was losing millions by buying the expensive homes of relocating employees. She also won the Livingston Award for Young Journalists for the documentary “Killings At The Canal: The Army Tapes,” which aired in November 2009.

jm @ 4:03 – When we crashed 2 years ago, the treasury printed 3 Billion dollars and released that into the economy. There was no inflationary effect from it, which is proof that we’re up against what Keynesians call the “zero lower bound”. Having said that, they could devalue the dollar, which would have an inflationary effect.
And we know how to control things like inflation. First we have to start the engine, then we can tune it.

md, from the CNN story:
O’Keefe called Boudreau on August 10. During the conversation, he said he preferred that Boudreau meet him in person in Maryland and asked that she come alone.
“I just want to talk,” O’Keefe told Boudreau on the phone. “I just want to have a, you know, meeting with you, and talk to you face to face about this. Because, I don’t, I feel sort of, let’s just say reserved about, about letting people into my sort of inner sanctum, about letting, letting people sort of take a glimpse into, into, behind the scenes, so that’s why you know, I just feel more comfortable if it was just me and you and we just had a face-to-face meeting before I agree to, to let you guys come out and shoot the video shoot out there.”
The call had been taped by O’Keefe, without Boudreau’s knowledge. The transcript of the conversation was part of the material leaked to CNN, presumably by the same person who intervened to stop the madness.
The misogynism of the whole plot is pretty startling.

left wing 4:20 – there are two types of capital, which I think you’re alluding to. Financial capital and intellectual capital. Yes, intellectual capital will create new value. But new value isn’t necessarily filling a void, and when you chase of financial capital, there is a real, irreplaceable lost benefit.
I know this is a theoretical, but it is instructive. Take your idea to the extreme. Expropriate all capital from all rich people and redistribute it (ala Zimbabwe). Sure, intellectual capital will eventually recreate value. But lifetimes are lost in the interim. Financial capital is real, has real benefits, and should be treated with the same respect that intellectual capital is given.

The guy would be hailed and exalted as as a hero by the liberal media if his focus was on a conservative media organization or its members. His biggest problem is is that he isn’t targeting conservatives and that he is targeting the leftist media outlets like CNN and socialist organizations like ACORN so therefore, the liberals are “outraged” by everything he does. I don’t agree with this type of gotcha crap from anybody but the hypocrisy of the liberals faux sanctimonious reaction at the gentleman is sickening. It would have all been ok if it the target would have been a reporter from FOX, wouldn’t it?
I admit, in this case he made a mistake on his target. Boudreau is one of the best things on CNN and she has done some excellent work and has done a lot of good. Nothing Jay says here exonerates the ACORN people and what was captured on that tape though that is exactly what he is trying to do. Anyone that has read the history of ACORN and its finances knows that it is (I and said “IS”, because it is many little ACORNs now with different names) a corrupt organization that has done way more wrong than it has done right. Billions of dollars have been waste because of that organization.

There’s more to this story besides the “accoutrements d’amour” on the list (Viagara, dild** , posters and paintings of naked women, playboys and pornographic magazines, handcuffs, blindfold). Kinda makes you wonder for whose benefit the “posters and paintings of naked women, playboys and pornographic magazines” were stocked on the boat for, doesn’t it? But I digress.
This was the operational seduction plan that this genius had in mind:
“As the operation is going on, James [O'Keefe] will have to adapt and adjust to her mood and her reaction. If she is pulling away, withdraw and pull her back in. If she’s unsure, comfort her and reassure her. Vacillate between somewhat serious interview and the come-hither persona as needed in order to confuse her judgment and also keep her on the boat.”
Maybe this gawky kid has secret talents, but it’s really a stretch to believe he has the Cassanova chops to succeed with a 13-year veteran of CNN who has master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Bosch, all that needs to be said about ACORN is the Rathke brothers. These “founding fathers” of the organization were certainly “fine, upstanding citizens”, weren’t they? ACORN was never meant to be anything other than a way to funnel taxpayer dollars to further Democratic/Progressive candidates and that is exactly why Obama loved them so and even worked with them as a legal representative. They are still out there, spending our taxpayer dollars for political purposes, only now they are split up into other organizations with a variety of names and maybe that is why that the progressives such as Jay seem to want to attack their attackers. And because of this gentleman’s tape, they are not as powerful and free to fritter away taxpayer money as they once were. He may do only one good thing in his life but with the ACORN case he did the country a huge amount of good. With people like Jay calling for tax increases it is incomprehensible to me that they can defend organizations such as ACORN. Our taxpayer dollars need to be spent on helping our people and our nation, not on political hacks with political agendas.

In the grand scheme of things, this CNN thing is a non-story. As someone requested earlier: “can we have a return to adult topics”? Of course, the other day I requested a break from serious topics. So I guess I’m a flip-flopper.
Perhaps there are less serious adult topics out there. Like, “does science actually know what’s doing”? Or some such thing….

When all is said and done, and all the emotional stuff is over and history does its inspection of the Obama Presidency, it will go down as one of the most corrupt administrations in our nations history, and that is saying a lot. Obama’s selection of Holder as Attorney General will be worth chapters in the book.
Of course, who would have expected otherwise considering where Obama comes from and where his political views were formulated and nurtured? Afterall, he had a a communist/radical father and a socialist/radical mother and first and foremost, there is the Chicago political scene’s contribution which steared so much of his way of doing business. As for the arrogance and the sense of his own infalibility that he displays, even when all evidence points to that what he is doing is wrong and is contrary to what his nations people want him to do, that is all about him and his ego. And it will be his undoing. Obama cannot stand critism and he lashes out at anyone that dares to do it. Any leader without introspection is not a leader at all but a simple run-of-the-mill power hungry ego-maniac (these types make fine dictators, if there is such a thing) and Obama has no introspection at all. He simply cannot conceive that anything he does is wrong. And why should he after the idol worship that was the 2008 campaign?

You are aware most of those ’sources’ all pull the same stuff from the wire services – the news agencies – Associated Press, Reuters, UPI – for the basics, then embellish with a few words of their own? We may be saying the pretty much the same thing. There are a few services that provide the source material, some who even take that and do a bit of gruntwork on their own to provide new information. But I don’t believe the newspapers and website verify the information provided by the wire services. My understanding is they take it as good.
It may seem like splitting hairs, but I’d say there are, for these national stories, a few ’sources’ then a lot of follow-up commentary. Rather like a medical journal publishing an article about a medical breakthrough, then a gazillion news outlets publishing it and offering bits of commentary that will be of interest to their readership.
I understand much original reporting has to do with local or regional topics.

I’d imagine one of the points of the story has to do with the rise of independent ‘journalists’ – even those with some college training – others with a desire and a videocamera. In other words, are they really journalists? Do they have the same rights as recognized journalists to protect sources? Do they follow a code of professional conduct?
And there’s the lesson about what happens when one lets a little bit of fame go to one’s head. Stuff like this results.

For all you libs bashing Okeefe for the Acorn story, why exactly are you bashing him? He’s not the Acorn worker(s) who did the things they did. He didn’t make them do anything wrong. He simply video taped them acting like the low lifes they are.
Yes, with Sherrod, he did put out a story that didn’t contain the whole picture, but Jay does that on here every day and you don’t have a problem with it. And he’s not the person who fired her over it without looking into the matter. That would be your messiah who did that.
I’ll reserve judgement on this story until the rest of the story comes out. At this point, it’s obviously too far fetched to be the whole story. I’m guessing the joke is going to end up being on the Jay’s of the world who ran with this story. We’ll see.

Just a quick historical reference here, but Article 14 of the Carolina Charter gave “equal rights of citizenship to Jews, Heathens and Dissenters,” first place in Western Civilization to do so, while New England was dunking witches. You’re right to own and dispose of property under your own name as a woman (repeal of the Law of Couverture) was first established as an incorporation of Chickasaw Law in the Mississippi Constitution of 1839. O’Keefe currently works as a speaker and video producer. In addition, in a January 26, 2010 interview, Andrew Breitbart, editor of the Drudge Report and owner of Breitbart.com, BigGovernment.com, BigHollwood.com and BigJournalism.com, says he pays O’Keefe a salary for his “life rights”.[20]

Well the Democrats are rolling dice by having to go back and explain to their constituents why they didn’t vote on extending the Bush tax cuts. It will be difficult given the fact that Pelosi didn’t have the votes in the House nor Reid in the Senate to block the majority vote for extending cuts across the board for all. Mick, once again, I am not a Republican. I am a Constitutionalist, which is why you never get anything right when trying to debate me. I am a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. I usually vote third-party or “None of the Above” in most elections.
Paul Ryan has a very specific policy outlined. More Republicans and even more potentially newly-elected Republicans are buying into his plan.
And you’re about the only person on the planet that thinks that the GOP won’t take the House, especially considering that there are over 40 solidly favoring GOP districts already, and another 40 leaning GOP or too close to call. Even long-time Democrat strategists are giving up on the House and trying to save the Senate. Independents are breaking 70%-30% to the Tea Party or GOP candidates.
Why do you ignore what is staring you in the face?

Nesweek Magazine (1/31/90)
About a year ago, Charlie Rose, the nighttime talk-show host, was interviewing Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, the military adviser at the White House coordinating efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq. “We have never been beaten tactically in a fire fight in Afghanistan,” Lute said.
To even casual students of the Vietnam War, his statement has an eerie echo. One of the iconic exchanges of Vietnam came, some years after the war, between Col. Harry Summers, a military historian, and a counterpart in the North Vietnamese Army. As Summers recalled it, he said, “You never defeated us in the field.” To which the NVA officer replied: “That may be true. It is also irrelevant.”
Our military never was defeated. Our cowardly politicians gave it away.

The House of Reps finally got around the Repubs manuvers and obfuscation to pass a special health care bill for first responders to 9/11. 160 Repubs voted AGAINST the measure, even though they are the first ones to trot out a speak about “hollowed ground” and other such nonsense.
The story is not over because Sen. DeMint (R-SC) has indicated that he will oppose any and all bills that come to the Senate prior to the November election.
It is a pity the Dems did not have enough courage to force the Repubs to vote on the tax reduction bill before the election.

Even though you are wrong, you made my point to Margo that it was not a military defeat.
We took our football and went home.
Revisionist history is easy. I suggest you and Margo read “An American Anmensia (How the U.S. Congress Forced The Surrenders of South Vietnam and Cambodia)” by Bruce Herschensohn. It basically describes how America signed a treaty (to obtain a cease fire) stating they would use air power to help repel any North Vietnamese Invasion. We signed the treaty, a contract ……….. then shamefully walked away from it with no honor.
The American soldier can hold their head high. Some of the American People, Congress of that day and you cannot.
By the way, leaving as we did cost an estimated two million Cambodian lives as long as you are couinting bodies.
As far as your personally condesending, sacastic, unpatriotic remarks aimed at me, this quote fits you perfectly. It’s from another war that a huge portion of the American people were against and in fact fought for the other side:
“Contemplate the mangled bodies of your countrymen, and then say ‘what should be the reward of such sacrifices?’ … If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands, which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!” Samuel Adams
Oh, perfidious nation.

A Few Parting Thoughts for Jay:
1) Here’s the main reason I volunteered to fight in V.N.
Vietnam Magazine (2010)
“In late December, a 60 year-old former lieutenant colonel and proponent of democratic reforms in Vietnam, Tran Anh Kim, was convicted of subversion and sentenced to five years in prison. According to press reports, Kim’s trial was the first of a series of upcoming prosecutions of pro-democracy and human-rights activists. Kim, who faced a potential death sentence, stood accused of joining an organization promoting multiparty democracy, of posting pro-democracy articles on the Internet and being a member of an outlawed party.”
2) The second reason I volunteered for Vietnam is that “my country” (who betrayed me) called on a naive 18 year old kid to help enforce its foreign policy (since polticians, dipolmats and armchair warriors are not into that part of the messes they make).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AqESKOaeGk (Jim Reeves – “Distant Drums)
3) Our casualties during our War for Independence were probably per capita as much as Vietnam. In any case, thank goodness the French troops were not under control of an organization like the U.S. Congress or the British would have kicked our a** and General Washington, et al would have been hung as traitors.
4) “If there was immorality in the war in Vietnam, it was that a democratic nation called her citizens to war, had them killed by the tens of thousands, and then, like a faithless lover, turned and scorned the survivors.” David Donovan
5) Your words ……….. “Get over it.”
Let me just say, that anyone who has carried dead Americans from the field of battle never gets over it. It’s a lifetime price we pay for serving and protecting the ungrateful.
6) To all Marines out there ……….. we know don’t we !

Monday night at Pappas Bros. Steakhouse, Bryant took the offensive players out, then Williams invited the defensive players and when the night was over the bill came: $54,896.

If you check in here in the morning I went downstairs to see if there was any fallout from that snark Jay B took at me. All I found was our regular brown noser, but I scrolled up and realized the snark came in response to a comment you made. I think you might be reading those charts for effective tax rates wrong. The people who say X% don’t pay federal income tax is borne out, but you have to scroll to the second chart to see just income tax. When you do you’ll see that many not only don’t pay they have a negative effective rate meaning they get a “refund” of money they never paid in.

“There is something deeply sick, even depraved, about these people.”
There is something correspondingly sick about making the above statement with little to back it up. In fact, the backhanded comment is the modern stock-and-trade of liberal empty-heads. for all intents and purposes, it offers dismissal to understanding, as the way forward–similar to the way Obama “sold” healthcare to the nation.
The punk was jettisoned and no one was harmed or embarrassed, except perhaps O’Keefe, and then only slightly.
Maybe you could tell us all JAY, Who are “these people?” Would you lump O’Keefe in with say, Michael Moore? Or does Moore’s accolades–like your pullitzer or whatever you won–innoculate him against such gauche characterizations of his “serious work?”

throughout the 2008 election season, there was a concerted campaign to whip up hysteria about ACORN, and by November 2009, Public Policy Polling found that more than a quarter of Americans (and an outright majority of Republican voters) believed that ACORN had stolen the election for Obama.
This was, of course, after the classic bit of Nixonian “rat-f—ing” pulled off by a prankster named James O’Keefe.
O’Keefe, a veteran at creating videos to make blacks look greedy and stupid (look for “Taxpayers Clearing House” on YouTube), spent the summer driving around the country with his accomplice, Hannah Giles, making videos in ACORN offices asking for advice about avoiding tax troubles with prostitution money. You’ve no doubt seen the images of O’Keefe dressed as a ’70s pimp. But O’Keefe had carefully edited his tapes and left out, for example, that he was decked out in college preppie clothes, not pimp-wear. At least one ACORN office threw him out, and at least two knowingly played along with his ruse. (The San Diego office called the cops after he left, and the Philadelphia office filed a police report.)

There is often a nugget of truth buried in the generalization (ie, there are a lot of royally hacked off people, and most of them are white), but the tea party folks as a percentage of white americans is pretty small.
So, there is a core truth in the generalization, but the generalization itself is false.
Maybe would’ve been better to just write the headline “There are a lot of really angry white folks out there”, but it wouldn’t have been as catchy probably.
