O’Keefe targeted CNN reporter for depraved ‘prank’

I very much believe — and hope — that nothing is going to top this story in terms of pure strangeness. But the way things are going, that hope may prove to be false.

You may remember James O’Keefe, the conservative hero and “filmmaker” made famous by his ACORN work. Apparently, young Master O’Keefe wanted to find a way to “punk” and embarrass CNN, and to do so he set in motion a plan to lure a CNN reporter, Abbie Boudreau, onto a Maryland houseboat on the pretext of doing an interview.

The boat was to be outfitted with hidden cameras and other items, as detailed in the “equipment list” later acquired by CNN and republished below. O’Keefe then intended to try to seduce Boudreau, on hidden camera, and later release the video as some sort of triumph.

As CNN itself reports:

According to the document, O’Keefe was to record a video of the following script before Boudreau arrived: “My name is James. I work in video activism and journalism. I’ve been approached by CNN for an interview where I know what their angle is: they want to portray me and my friends as crazies, as non-journalists, as unprofessional and likely as homophobes, racists or bigots of some sort….

“Instead, I’ve decided to have a little fun. Instead of giving her a serious interview, I’m going to punk CNN. Abbie has been trying to seduce me to use me, in order to spin a lie about me. So, I’m going to seduce her, on camera, to use her for a video. This bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who comes on at five will get a taste of her own medicine, she’ll get seduced on camera and you’ll get to see the awkwardness and the aftermath.”

The plot was apparently foiled only at the last minute by a female colleague of O’Keefe’s, who intercepted Boudreau right before the meeting and confessed the scheme.

Go read CNN’s account. It has more details and weirdness than I can include here. I thought the Shirley Sherrod debacle was probably as low as this kind of thing could go, but clearly I had no idea.

There is something deeply sick, even depraved, about these people.

“I don’t have any idea what would be correct but I think of “went to jail”, as arrested.”

I was just illustrating that the British aren’t the only ones who use that construction (without an article) – but even so, taking a line through your ““went to jail”, as arrested” – then “went to hospital” would mean admitted. Just as “went to jail” could be “admitted”

“RB,

I don’t think O’Keefe had anything to do with the Sherrod story.”

That’s correct. It was O’Keefe’s daddy, Andrew Breitbart, who peddled that smear.

Well the Democrats are rolling dice by having to go back and explain to their constituents why they didn’t vote on extending the Bush tax cuts. It will be difficult given the fact that Pelosi didn’t have the votes in the House nor Reid in the Senate to block the majority vote for extending cuts across the board for all. The clear disunity among Dem’s could hurt them even more in November.

I believe just the opposite, people are wising up to the fact that the repubs are all for cutting the deficit but at the same time shielding the wealthy from that 3% increase at every turn. After reviewing the 13 page “CNN Caper” document that O’Keefe produced, I’m not sure he hasn’t violated his probation with an attempt at illegal wiretapping and recording.

This was a sick plan. That said, Abbie Boudreau would’ve gotten up and demanded to be allowed to leave had he commenced doing what he said he was going to do.

Paul Ryan has a very specific policy outlined. More Republicans and even more potentially newly-elected Republicans are buying into his plan.

And you’re about the only person on the planet that thinks that the GOP won’t take the House, especially considering that there are over 40 solidly favoring GOP districts already, and another 40 leaning GOP or too close to call. Even long-time Democrat strategists are giving up on the House and trying to save the Senate. Independents are breaking 70%-30% to the Tea Party or GOP candidates.

Nesweek Magazine (1/31/90)

About a year ago, Charlie Rose, the nighttime talk-show host, was interviewing Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, the military adviser at the White House coordinating efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq. “We have never been beaten tactically in a fire fight in Afghanistan,” Lute said.

To even casual students of the Vietnam War, his statement has an eerie echo. One of the iconic exchanges of Vietnam came, some years after the war, between Col. Harry Summers, a military historian, and a counterpart in the North Vietnamese Army. As Summers recalled it, he said, “You never defeated us in the field.” To which the NVA officer replied: “That may be true. It is also irrelevant.”

Our military never was defeated. Our cowardly politicians gave it away.

We took our football and went home.

Revisionist history is easy. I suggest you and Margo read “An American Anmensia (How the U.S. Congress Forced The Surrenders of South Vietnam and Cambodia)” by Bruce Herschensohn. It basically describes how America signed a treaty (to obtain a cease fire) stating they would use air power to help repel any North Vietnamese Invasion. We signed the treaty, a contract ……….. then shamefully walked away from it with no honor.

The American soldier can hold their head high. Some of the American People, Congress of that day and you cannot.

By the way, leaving as we did cost an estimated two million Cambodian lives as long as you are couinting bodies.

As far as your personally condesending, sacastic, unpatriotic remarks aimed at me, this quote fits you perfectly. It’s from another war that a huge portion of the American people were against and in fact fought for the other side:

“Contemplate the mangled bodies of your countrymen, and then say ‘what should be the reward of such sacrifices?’ … If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands, which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!” Samuel Adams

“It’s so important for repubs to believe that they will be the victors come november. After eight years of bush, if the country wants to go back for more, we will get what we deserve…”

I don’t see it that way Mick – I see a country that prefers to stay in the middle while 2 parties continue to try to pull it one way or the other. The voters are trying to send a message to both parties – check your agenda at the door and compromise……….

“The voters are trying to send a message to both parties – check your agenda at the door and compromise……….”

I think anyone who believes that in THIS election season has missed the entire point of the Tea Party movement.
