O’Keefe targeted CNN reporter for depraved ‘prank’

I very much believe — and hope — that nothing is going to top this story in terms of pure strangeness. But the way things are going, that hope may prove to be false.

You may remember James O’Keefe, the conservative hero and “filmmaker” made famous by his ACORN work. Apparently, young Master O’Keefe wanted to find a way to “punk” and embarrass CNN, and to do so he set in motion a plan to lure a CNN reporter, Abbie Boudreau, onto a Maryland houseboat on the pretext of doing an interview.

The boat was to be outfitted with hidden cameras and other items, as detailed in the “equipment list” later acquired by CNN and republished below. O’Keefe then intended to try to seduce Boudreau, on hidden camera, and later release the video as some sort of triumph.

As CNN itself reports:

According to the document, O’Keefe was to record a video of the following script before Boudreau arrived: “My name is James. I work in video activism and journalism. I’ve been approached by CNN for an interview where I know what their angle is: they want to portray me and my friends as crazies, as non-journalists, as unprofessional and likely as homophobes, racists or bigots of some sort….

“Instead, I’ve decided to have a little fun. Instead of giving her a serious interview, I’m going to punk CNN. Abbie has been trying to seduce me to use me, in order to spin a lie about me. So, I’m going to seduce her, on camera, to use her for a video. This bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who comes on at five will get a taste of her own medicine, she’ll get seduced on camera and you’ll get to see the awkwardness and the aftermath.”

The plot was apparently foiled only at the last minute by a female colleague of O’Keefe’s, who intercepted Boudreau right before the meeting and confessed the scheme.

Go read CNN’s account. It has more details and weirdness than I can include here. I thought the Shirley Sherrod debacle was probably as low as this kind of thing could go, but clearly I had no idea.

There is something deeply sick, even depraved, about these people.

Are you making the assumption that she couldn’t handle the situation?

Not at all, but my original reading of Jay’s comment was that these were emails between the two of them in which case she wouldn’t or at least shouldn’t be surprised by this story. Obviously the clarification changes things.

Talking about dirty politics – check out the story on the Whitman housekeeper. This illegal individual has the nerve to provide a fake SS# for employment and then accuse Whitman of knowingly hiring her illegally. May be more believable had she not been sitting next to her attorney – long time Jerry brown friend Gloria Allred.

You are aware most of those ’sources’ all pull the same stuff from the wire services – the news agencies – Associated Press, Reuters, UPI – for the basics, then embellish with a few words of their own? Those ’sources’ aren’t really sources, doing their own investigation and writing. They’re pretty much ‘repeaters.’

The writers of these pieces have attached their names and the name of their organization to the written pieces. I contend, much of the information found about any source is reasonably independent. We may be saying the pretty much the same thing. There are a few services that provide the source material, some who even take that and do a bit of gruntwork on their own to provide new information. But I don’t believe the newspapers and website verify the information provided by the wire services. My understanding is they take it as good.

It may seem like splitting hairs, but I’d say there are, for these national stories, a few ’sources’ then a lot of follow-up commentary. Rather like a medical journal publishing an article about a medical breakthrough, then a gazillion news outlets publishing it and offering bits of commentary that will be of interest to their readership.

I understand much original reporting has to do with local or regional topics.

good evening, F. Sinkwich

I’d imagine one of the points of the story has to do with the rise of independent ‘journalists’ – even those with some college training – others with a desire and a videocamera. In other words, are they really journalists? Do they have the same rights as recognized journalists to protect sources? Do they follow a code of professional conduct?

And there’s the lesson about what happens when one lets a little bit of fame go to one’s head. Stuff like this results.

“I had not thought of that!”

I actually asked that same question once and “went to jail” was the answer I got back.

“he was taken to hospital” “No article. I’ve never been able to find out why.”

Me: “I had to take my wife to the hospital.”

Brit: “Which hospital?”

Me: “John Radcliffe in Oxford. But what difference does that make?”

Brit: “You said the hospital. Which one? If it wasn’t important, why did you say “the”? But evidently, it isn’t. So…. you took your wife to hospital. How is she?”

See now?

Just a quick historical reference here, but Article 14 of the Carolina Charter gave “equal rights of citizenship to Jews, Heathens and Dissenters,” first place in Western Civilization to do so, while New England was dunking witches. You’re right to own and dispose of property under your own name as a woman (repeal of the Law of Couverture) was first established as an incorporation of Chickasaw Law in the Mississippi Constitution of 1839. The South ain’t perfect by a long shot, but it has given us in the country a lot of progressive stuff, too…

RB,

I don’t think O’Keefe had anything to do with the Sherrod story.

A cane will be fine. You’ll also want to keep a handy supply of “foreign objects”, hidden away.

I don’t have any idea what would be correct but I think of “went to jail”, as arrested. If I “went to the jail”, then I was going to visit somebody.

RB, O’keefe gets bashed for the Acorn story because he spliced clips to make it appear much worse than it really was. A gotcha story is one thing, a hit job is another.

“What about “he went to jail”?”

All they care about in that case is, did he have to go directly to jail and did he collect $200?

Hospital and hospice are from the same source. And I have noted that someone “goes to hospice.”
I understand we brought the institution from England…did we bring the grammar with it?

A hot plate of gooey justice awaits all ya’ll neocon perverts when you check in to the gates of hell…

p.s. your marriott award points won’t get you a upgrade suite next to your lord and master Satan, maybe a hand-job from a Catholic priest or a tushee squeeze from Bishop Long….

I’m not aware of O’keefe having anything to do with the Sherrod story either but, apparently he’s on Brietbart’s payroll:

O’Keefe currently works as a speaker and video producer. In addition, in a January 26, 2010 interview, Andrew Breitbart, editor of the Drudge Report and owner of Breitbart.com, BigGovernment.com, BigHollwood.com and BigJournalism.com, says he pays O’Keefe a salary for his “life rights”.[20]
