the tragedy here is not that someone “fell into temptation” (if the allegations are true) but the deep
and hurtful hypocrisy, and the continued linkage between homosexuality and sin. If Mr. Long committed
any sins, they are adultery, coercion, sexual harassment and perhaps a few others. Homosexuality is not a sin. Any more than heterosexuality.

We are not perfect and people fail. If the allegations are true, then he should be stripped of all power and required to perform services to the church at no charge. But I doubt that will happen…. He will say he has sinned and the people will forgive him and he will continue on his corrupt ways, if the allegations are true.
By the way, the Democrats are now the “Party of Gutless”. They were going to put a boot on the throats of Republicans and they did when they had the power, but now with the midterms, its “lets not do anything to make the voters madder”.. As in …..WASHINGTON — Senate Democratic leaders decided Thursday to delay a vote on preserving soon-to-expire middle class tax cuts until after congressional elections in November.
President Barack Obama has made extending the cuts a priority, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid tried to forge a consensus among fellow Democrats to pass a bill before voters choose their congressmen and senators on Nov. 2.
But Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, decided to delay any vote after a meeting with other Senate Democrats failed to produce an agreement on how to proceed.
They can’t decide on taxes, but they had time to push DADT and Dream Act….. “Political Priorities”…. Picking on the Dems here, but the Repubs are just as bad……….

This completely broke my heart too :’( and i went all emo on my husband when i saw the news on tv. But i can’t forget how it felt for the past four years without any spiritual direction. I may not share the same views about homosexuality that most preachers profess, but when i was down, and couldn’t hear the voice of God, I’d see Bishop Long on tv and instantly hear God’s voice through that man saying that God wasn’t through with me, and it kept me alive to get where i needed to be in my heart. So Bishop, right back at you…this is going to suck, worse than anything has ever sucked in the entire history of all that has sucked before, but you’ll get through it, and you will keep preaching to people like me.

It amazes me that some people can’t fathom that Bishop E. Long would engage in such behavior. This man is human just like the rest of us and we ALL fall short at some time or another. HE IS HUMAN too.
The mounting body of evidence is damning and all signs are pointing to GUILTY!
The most interesting thing about this whole “scandal” is that no one (the public) has heard from this guy. I mean, with a congregation of over 25,000 he has support and if he was truly innocent, why isn’t he trying to clear his name and allow these two young men to tear down this FINANCIAL EMPIRE that he has so diligently built. Now, that makes absolutely no sense! ATL (where I live) is full of media outlets for him to deliver his message(s).
Damn, maybe I should go to New Birth on Sunday to see what is going to be said… Hmph!

I am not a lawyer, but I have retained more than one. if such (non-testimony) evidence exists, Long and his lawyers are aware of it, and the case will be settled, Long will go on Oprah and do his best Jimmy Swaggart. some of his flock will leave, others will remain loyal (perhaps even his accusers). I fail to see how the formation of any Warren Commission or 9/11 Committee is going to reveal anything beyond what is contained in the lawsuit. as I said, such salacious, scandalous stories make for good Friday copy, but seriously, this is about as newsworthy as Real Housewives of Atlanta.

This is truly a sad story. What we must not forget about Eddie Long is his contributions to the lives of Christians and non-Christians everywhere. Yes, he has preached ignorance, but he has done so much more!!! Regardless of his fallings, he is a gifted messenger of God, and I hope he makes it through this. Nonetheless, I also hope that he doesn’t leave this situation unscathed. This has taught us all an important lesson: As much hatred as we direct at another group, we cannot “undo” who we are. God wants us to love ourselves the way that he made us, and he hates it when we do the complete opposite.

Tampa-Times, when you say, “We ougt to pray that God’s will be done,” are you not saying dictate to God that he/she/it does the right thing? Why you Christians never question what you say. You continually say you give God all the honor, glory; and he has all the power, but you Christians are constantly dictating to God via prayer. I use to be a firm believer who was at church evertime the doors flew open and worshipped fervently. Ah, the tumultuous relationship of religion and homosexuality. Religion, Christianity in this case, has perpetuated a hideous lie that homosexuality is a chosen perversion rather than a natural anomaly. The dichotomy of the success of our civilization and the ignorance about homosexuality is remarkable and sad. This speaks volumes about mankind’s willingness to blindly follow an outlandish doctrine while almost knowingly hammering common sense out of their head with a hammer. ANYONE can fall. That’s exactly why we are facing these circumstances today because people put their faith in man and not God. I too have watched Bishop preach and I must say he is a dynamic speaker and I believe he is Anointed by God, but that does not keep him from falling. David was the apple of God’s eye, but if you don’t know his story…read it. Yes he fell with Bathsheba and he had Bathsheba’s husband killed. This was a man that loved God and God LOVED David! But…he FELL
I am praying that Bishop has not fallen, but I’m not denying the fact that it can and may have happened. This Spirit is willing but the Flesh is WEAK! Bishop and every other man of God has no monopoly on this temptation. If the devil tempted Jesus, do you not know that he will temp man as well.
Let’s not be judgmental on either side, because someone here is the Victim, and frankly God is the one who knows the TRUTH! My prayers are for both!

Religion is a personal issue, whether you have a lot or none, it is personal.

I tend to agree with paleo-neo-Carlinist at 8:44 am – this is really not newsworthy. But people do love a good scandal. And this is a good scandal by any measure. There will be other Bookman columns on this and

But as far as the truth coming out in the trial, if it gets that far,
I doubt it. My experience in civil trials is that both sides lie and the “truth” rarely comes out.

We balcks are often an emotional people who all too often place logic on the shelf and latch on to theatrics as the gospel, no pun intended. Picture this: tens of slaves armed to help master push Creek Indians off their land and further up country in South Carolina in the 1700’s and not one thought to turn their guns on their master. The most important thing that NO ONE has really said anything about are the other young men who “might be” in danger at the Longfellow mentoring foundation. If my child were in the program, I think I would “error on the side of caution” and I would definitely question my child about the things that were occurring past and present.

However, I don’t believe that the allegations are a scam. I think B.J. Bernstein is a smart lady and would not have pursued such a high profile case without due diligence. I also find it hard to believe that three young men would put themselves out there for the world to see and not actually be telling the truth. It’s still very hard for a young black man to come out of the closet in 2010.

If true, I hope Bishop Eddie Long will admit it on Sunday, step down and move on with his life. It would be a very bad scenario for him to say that none of it occurred; only to have additional people come forward and tarnish his reputation further. The allegations are bigger than Bishop Eddie Long, because this involved a 25,000 plus congregation and other people who were in close contact with him.

If not, he should make a statement to clear his name and the church of responsibility for this huge mess. I wouldn’t want him to wait and let this play out in the media or in a court room. It’s an ugly situation and more than just his personal life is involved, because he is accused of putting young men on the payroll for unmentioned job descriptions, taking them around the world for no apparent valuable reasons and buying them lavish gifts. In my opinion, that is a waste of the churches valuable resources and should be investigated.

Otherwise, I will continue to pray for him (regardless of the situation), the young men, others who might be out there and his entire congregation. This is sad no matter what the outcome.

Part I: The vicious nature of some comments is as injurious as the activities we are discussing. Many of the members of New Birth are innocent victims as well (some are not) and we need to be careful that we are not making more victims as we exploit this tragedy to perpetuate our own private and personal agendas and vendettas against the church.

Some people who are commenting are exploiting this situation to perpetuate their dislike/hate of Christianity. The real issue is that when there are no basic moral or ethical standards where human sexuality is concerned we open the door for any and all type of sexual exploitation; crossing boundaries; pushing the limits of behavior, then blaming that behavior as genetically inspired, or otherwise out of our self-control (we can’t help it). Humans are not animals, we get to chose what we do and to whom we do it, sexually or otherwise. All sexual activity is a choice, good bad or ugly.

Secondly as these discussions go, we are not saying anything about the alleged victims in this case. Homosexuality and heterosexuality is not the issue in this case. Clergy (priest, Imam, Rev. Bishop, Rabbi, etc) sexual exploitation is. Clergy (especially pastoral clergy-put your religious equivalent in here) should under no circumstances be engaging in sexual activity with the sheep they pastor, even if the sheep consent or initiate the encounter. For that matter, choir directors, deacons, trustees, etc., should not be having sex (homosexually or heterosexually) with persons they council, lead, direct or have influence over. It is never morally or ethically acceptable. It can never be morally or ethically justified, ever. Unfortunately, we have not been trained to understand this, to know what it is and how to take steps to prevent it. So we (clergy and non clergy) have engaged in activities that are hurtful, not only to the clergy but to the church and the willing accomplices.

They cite witnesses who will be legally obligated to testify honestly in court to what they saw or risk charges of perjury.

People can and do lie in court every day. How many times have you seen anybody charged with perjury? Only in the few cases when they want to make an example out of somebody.

I don’t think their attorney would have bothered to release those photos if she did not already have some far more risque ones. She is a very smart woman and knows that those photos alone are not enough to condemn him. Cause questions yes, condemn no. It’s Friday afternoon folks, and I would guess by the end of today they are going to drop a doozie on us. As a christian, I pray these allegations aren’t true. While Long isn’t on of my favorite preachers, he does minister to others.

I think the larger question is how will he walk from now on? He left himeslf open to attack with the congressional ethics probe, his perchant for wearing prideful ‘muscle shirts’ and massive diamond rings (he even had a blood diamond). Will he tone it down and walk the path of humility our Lord walked? Will he admit his pride and arrogancy has helped put him in this position?

If this can change him for the better, then “all things work together for the good…”

As Jay wrote, Paulk chose to rebel and deny, and all was stripped from him. Jim Bakker went to prison, came out repentant and wrote a book “I was Wrong”. Whick path will the Bishop take?

@@, am not contesting or questioning your ethics or experience as a juror. I have never been charged in criminal court, but I have participated in the civil (Family Law) dog and pony show more times than I care to discuss. at the end of the day, it is not possible for the court to administer “justice” and it is not possible because people lie. as was noted, in civil court (especially family court), “perjury” (lies) is a legal tactic and not a sanctionable offense. politicians lie, ministers lie, attorneys murderers lie, and police officers lie. not all, but think about the weakest link in a chain. we “presume” the chain will support the weight, but for some reason we do not “presume” there is a weak link. ergo, I am not one to take such “leaps of faith”. oh, and about 15 years ago I was found to be in contempt and thrown off a jury in a civil case because I refused to listen to a married man and his mistress squabble over a wrongful termination.

Great, BALANCED, blog!

Honestly, I don’t have a single personal pic of him not dressed like that unless it was a formal setting. He’s been into body building since a cancer scare some years ago. If you go into the church gym, there are portraits of him and other dressed in the same manner. He’s known for the muscle shirt thing.

I wonder… Why is BJ already doing the media rounds? Doesn’t that compromise her clients? She also needs to advise them. Anthony still has his Facebook page going with some questionable photos of himself to say the least. They say, “A strong case is tried before the court. A weak case is tried before the media.”

I was with him a lot during the time this supposedly happened and none of these names ring a bell.

I haven’t attended New Birth in a couple of years, but my leaving have nothing to do with him. It was the members and SOME of the leadership. A great amount of this congregation is troubling. They do view and treat him as God, which as a result creates an unproductive atmosphere. They hang on every word, I guess, but his “I am not God” speeches. “The danger is that by elevating leaders in our eyes, we elevate them in their own eyes as well. To satisfy our own need to believe in someone better and stronger than we are, we turn mortals into demi-gods and then marvel when they start to act accordingly.” <- VERY well put!

I still tune to service online. And I will say that while I was trying to bring something to the table for the church unlike 80% that want to take, when I was hit with devastating news (and honestly tried to hide it) Bishop Long and New Birth went WAY out of their way for me.

One of these guys broke into the office and made off with $100+k. Apparently, that wasn’t enough.

The only things I can see him guilty of is an ego that has to be put in check occasionally, dressing poorly and a bad hair piece.

The two photos I found via Google don’t seem to be a big deal in and of themselves. A ripped guy, fully clothed, showing off his build…nothing particularly suggestive. Of course, I don’t know if they were sent attached to a lewd email or text.

I dislike a homophobic, religious hypocrite as much as anyone, but I need more evidence to “convict”.

The bottom line is that we yearn for things to talk about. We need things to talk about. We want things to talk about. Jay and folks like him help to fill that void for us. We should thank those that offer up blogs for our daily use. We should also give a moment of our time to the advertisements that help fund these blogs for without them, what would we have. Where would we go. What would we do.

By the way, Jay, might I suggest that you create a little more ambiance by introducing perhaps a coffee-shop screen background with persons sitting around tables and conversing. You could even let the regulars choose a character on screen to represent them, an avatar if you will. Their posts could show up in little bubbles. I’ve often contemplated a pool from whence we draw professional jurors. Highly educated people in possession of critical thinking skills. Only problem with that is, the defendant wouldn’t receive judgment from a jury of his peers. The majority of criminals are pretty stupid.

Equal rights advocates would be all over professional jury pools.

It ain’t perfect, but our present-day system is the best we’ve got. Among the best in the world as I understand it.

I was very shock about the pictures as well, but after careful thinking thought not to drop to conclussions 1 being that with my space, facebook and all these other social sites! if the privacy settings are not set right people can take your picture and down load them to there emails, phones, etc!! Well, this is the same kind of thing that happened to our Rev. Jim Bob Buice. He’s walking along one day and hears the voice of a young boy stuck in the bushes. He takes his nice clothes off so they won’t get messed up before he goes in to help the kid. When he gets in there, he finds the boy buck-nekkid! Well, he’s just about ready to get the kid out of there when along comes the cops and they slap handcuffs on the Rev. Jim Bob. Make a long story short, he’s off to prison for a couple years and now he can’t be around any kids anymore. That means giving up his preaching. Could happen to anybody.

Anyhow, this Bishop Long thing is a sad story. People shouldn’t hold it against him just because he has a few fancy cars and a big mansion and lots of money. The Lord rewards His servants. It says so right in the Bible and it never says the Streets of Gold need to be in the next life. And anybody could snap a photo of hisself in tight clothes and send it around. It looks bad, I got to admit that, but it ain’t Sinful.

Anyhow, I wonder what kind of Longfellow that Institute was named after.

Know nothing about this Man of God, his mission, his flock, or the validity of these charges. But I would like to know how he acquired the title Bishop. Did some ecumenical body bestow the title on him? Did he send $ 5 to a mail order title factory? Or did he just pick it like Lady Gaga? After all these years why hasn’t he made it to Arch Bishop? Was disappointed to see King Roy cancel his fund raising appearance with The Bishop. Always admired that Harry Truman stuck with his friend Tom Pendergast even after he was in prison. But Truman wasn’t a lawyer.

@@, yes and no. the judicial system is not a waste of time for lawyers, but it most certainly is a waste of time for the rest of us. after my jury experience I thought about the “professional juror” angle. in street crime and he said/she said civil cases, it is probably not a bad idea, but in high stakes civil or high profile criminal cases, do you not think someone can “get to the jury”? here’s my idea; number one, no trials for civil cases (divorce, property disputes, breech of contract). ALL civil matters are to be disposed of via arbitration or mediation. most civil cases are at best a pointless dog and pony show, at worst an unjust version of “Liar’s Poker”. on the criminal side, “profit” from justice. in the absence of pro se defense, ALL defendants have a public defender (court employee) as all prosecutors are court/state employees. is our judicial system the work of the Founding Fathers or Adam Smith? let’s take the “free market” out of it. if justice is a Constitutional right, then defendants (civil or criminal) should have access to the same level of representation. think of it as a “salary cap” for attorneys or better yet, a minimum wage (pay them and the judges what the jurors get paid; $25 per day. rememebr the video they show you when you report for jury duty? it tells you how “important” your role is; yeah, well then why am I getting $25 per day, but the attorneys are getting $400/hour? OR, pay me $400/hour to sit on a jury). so, to answer your question, no, the system doesn’t work. even when it “works” (a verdict is reached), it is more like flipping a coin than “justice”. the idea of vigilante justice is interesting, but still has the same “weak link” (people are dishonest).

It is amazingly ignorant for everyone to allow the main stream media to determine Eddie Long’s guilt based on accusations. How would you all feel if someone slandered your name and the verdict of “Guilty” was your judgement before due process. Get all the evidence before you get emotional and make false accusation when you don’t have all the evidence. The fact that the man is wealthy has no bearing on his guilt or innocence.

Why is okay for the rappers to flash bling and the movie stars to live lavishly, but a preacher cannot have a jet without being called a ‘false prophet.’

Money is not evil people–the love of money is– not having money is evil… and most of the ignorant comments I have read have come for so called Christians–where is the Love people.

I am not siding with anyone, as we are still awaiting more evidence. My question is, what if these were pictures that Long took after working out to send to his wife or to monitor his personal progress? What if his phone was stolen, as mentioned in another article, one of the accusers stole from his office. What if his phone was stolen and while gone, this gentleman decided to forward pics he found to his phone to have dirt on Bishop Long, or to frame him. I have no clue, but i have been thinking about the situation both ways, and its hard to form an opinion of what I think is true until its all said and done. I will continue to pray for both parties and that justice will prevail. We know that no evil thing can tarry in the sight of the Lord, and if this is true, this is God’s way of spitting Long out of his mouth and bringing him to a public shame. If it is not true, there is a huge lesson of long suffering that God wants to teach not only Long and New Birth, but the Christian community as a whole.

Every time one of these false prophets screw up (no matter how shameful it is), people want to bring out the “he’s human just like the rest of us” excuse. But most of us humans know how to steer clear of trouble of this nature. Besides, God didn’t mean for his humans to act this way, especially his church leaders. It’s clearly defined in the Bible. gen probably does not speak english as a first language. When on another blog that is predominantly portugese I will use the “translator”. Stephanie is absolutely right. God is alive in ALL of his children, and the church needs to learn this. I’m not saying that they should allow free reign for any act, but gay couples should be able to attend services without sweat, because the partner is not a cigarette. They can’t just take one and throw the other away. There are circumstances in this life that people are abused, born with hormonal imbalances and even transexuals (people born with both, or have become both already) and we as christians should accomidate these precious people also! I’m so tired of all the pick & choose that still molds around the doorposts of the church. Whatever happens in this case, i have a good feeling that it will cause the church to have a more open-arm outreach, and take their fears away. Cariller…. I completely agree with you. (on to another idea) Pastors, their children, choir members, ushers are people. As leaders of the church, they are always put on the forefront for attacks. I have read alot of the commints on this blog and disagree with things while agree with another. Many of you stated that Bishop Long help you get throught somethings or was you “favorite”. I will caution you to not give man so much credit. Bishop Long is simply a influentional speaker. If you are filled with the spirit of God, or you hear from God, simply by listing to what is suppose to be a man of God, then believe God has been there all along and that it only means you should work on relationship with God, who is always with, and stop putting so much confiedence in man. Bishop Long has done a lot of great things and he should be commended. He has brought alot of souls to Christ and that is wonderful, but let not forget, he is a servant and it is his job. His reward, if not ruined through sin, will be provided for in heaven. While we cant judge, because that is reserved for the Almighty, I just pray that these are alligation and that he has not used God’s name to gain fame and fillfil is sexual fantasies. Church people believe that the PASTORS/BISHOPS are being blessed by GOD because they have the jets, cars, clothes, houses, and lands. If a preacher does something terrible, it doesn’t mean that the person is terrible, it means that they DID something terrible, not ARE something terrible. When you die and go to Heaven, God isn’t going to point his finger at you and say “you are rotton to the core, get the hell out of my face”…He’s going to say, “you did something horrible, but i created you in my image and you are beautiful, not horrible, and Jesus say’s that you love Him so come on in and enter into rest” Don’t you people understand that we are ALL in the same boat? Weather it’s falling prey to the love of money, lust, eating too much, stealing, cheating or whatever…we all sin, the only difference between us and you is that we have said yes to The Spirit of Christ, to love Him and ask for Help when we do wrong things, but all you got is yourself, and that just makes life too hard. I can confess Jesus Christ in public, which means I’m a thousand times stronger than you.

I have been impressed with the range of discussion topics that emerged in response to this article, the multiple notions which motivated disparate readers of this article to respond to one another in such engaging ways. Please recall that this is not about religion; it is about a predator and his pattern of predation on teens and young adults.

Overall, there seems to be a strong desire to dialogue and to self express in words. Does the Internet create new spaces for voices that might otherwise not get entangled? Yet the arrangements are as fleeting and elusive as dragonflies.

Is the nature of this dialogue indicative of the tensions created by voicelessness born of modern exclusionary practices? The dissonances a kind of poetry amongst clouds?

Smokey tangentials. The discussion moved so very quickly to faith and sexuality, gender and godlessness and evil. Many people just want to have a particular discussion in the public sphere. I feel their need. Corruption, Fraud, Faith and Loss. History of black resistance, wisdom and discernment, sense of belonging and tragedy…

Im a little confused are you all saying that preachers should be poor? Example, my pastor (who was mentioned in an a previous example) has is PhD and his wife is a doctor at one of the best hospitals in the country…. but since he’s a pastor when he pulls up in a 2009 something you say its from the church’s money? Would you be more conviced to be a believer if he drove a ‘94 toyota? If you are blessed, who says you can not be blessed in all areas of life? If any many is using the word of God or some imitation of it to deceive God’s people then he (that man) will have to answer to God. SO it is not fair to portray the acts of one or two man and then extend them to all men of that race, culture, or positions. Thats what we call prejudices, sterotypes, and better known as ignorance.

In reference to Matthew 7:1, if we read verses two through five, it should be clear that these verses
are instructing us not to judge hypocritically, self-righteously, and unfairly. This does not
mean that we are prohibited from investigating or judging what is taught by church leaders. If we
go forward and read verses 15 through 20, Jesus continues by saying, “Beware of false prophets,
who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them
by their fruits….” How are we to know who the false teachers and false prophets are if we do not
judge their teachings and behavior by the Word of God? John 7:24 states that we are to “judge with righteous judgment” — meaning that we are commanded to exercise moral and doctrinal discernment. In Romans 16:17-18, Paul commands believers to “note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.”

Hypocrisy! Bishop Eddie Long led campaigns agains Homosexuality. Meanwhile, if the allegations are true, he was enticing young men with church money to perform sex acts. The photos in his bathroorm, the trips to various places, etc. The attorney for the Plaintiff apparently has received numerous calls from other alleged young victims. Many were looking for spiritual guidance and mentorship. New Birthers appear to remain resolute in their support of their bishop, despite the evidence emerging. Once they stop blaming the devil for “attacking Bishop”, perhaps they’ll get their head out of the sand and realize…he is only a man, but a man who while doing some very good things, was allegedly doing some rather horrible things to boys.

When you call an apple tree an apple tree, that is not judging. Simply put, a tree is known by the fruit it bears. Granted, that this fruit is being examined and the results are forthcoming, but if it looks like a crab apple, smell like a crab apple, feels like a crab apple, and taste like a crab apple, it is a crab apple.

I agree with Roland Martin, Long should step down. This ministry is of God and it’s much bigger than Long. My dad, a former pastor now with Alzheimer, and Parkinson disease oft time said, “Follow me as Long as I follow Christ”. My prayers are with the saints of this church, what God has joined together, let no man put asunder. Homosexuality and sodomy is a sin, it does not matter who does it.

Its always religion that has been mankind’s problems. It seems all kinds of things are and have been done in the name of religion. Religion not god is a true opium to people. They are very politicized as well and were the ministers in the black community that got some blacks to vote for republicans in first and second terms or Bush Jr. For this the former Pres promised them religious set aside money called “faith based” initiatives….i.e. the pay off…money changers in the church. They always have so much hate to say but deep down they are gay. It is usually the case when you get this much hate it masks the truth. If this country could and just past itself and just let people scandals like this and others, like TD Jakes’ son getting caught soliciting male sex in a park in Dallas, TX. I think it is high time we pass whatever laws are needed to protect people for who they and make sure all Americans are safe and can live the lives they are meant to live unhindered by the fears and hate of other people. If we all would get on our own knees, learn the word of God, know God’s expectations for ourselves as well as for those who lead us, these kinds of incidents would not shock us. God is a “Spirit”; and, His true worshippers will worship Him in Spirit and in Truth (the Word). God is not homosexual; and, those who wonder it are completely lost in darkness for even having spiritual ignorance enough to even foolishly speak such a thing. Whether Bishop Eddie Long is guilty or not, God will not be mocked, and will expose the truth in His timing. However, Elders of Long’s Church ought to conduct an internal investigation because the matter has been brought out and made public. Congregants of New-Birth should not sit idly and assume Long is not guilty any more than non-congregants should assume his guilt. Those who are members of Long’s congregation are the ones following his lead, and supporting that ministry. They should, thus, be the ones more concerned than anyone. The job of all saints of God is to pray for Bishop Long, his accusers, and the church-at-large. Sin is not justifiable when you know better. To not know better is justifiable for learning better. The truth (God’s Word) shall set us all free. Without knowledge of it, we all parish; whether saved or not!

This a great article. It cuts right kdown the middle. It’s true, we should be afraid of the truth. There’s no need to persecute or defend Long. But we do need to know if any person in power is using that power to abuse vulnerable people. If the allegations are false then the accusers should be properly dealt with. But if they are true then Bishop Long has to do what he has encouraged so many others to do: confront his demons and began his own healing. The truth will set us all free.

Bishop Eddie Long is one of my favorite spiritual leaders. Its hard to believe that he would do something like this. He is innocent until proven guilty in my eyes. Only God can judge. Where were the guardians years ago when this was supposed to be going on? I don’t think I would let my child go on any long trips if I wasn’t a chaperone. And my child would not be taking money, cars, clothes or anything else without me knowing why they got and where it came from. I’m not blaming anyone. This new generation of kids should focus on education. No one should want to pull down another person. I just want people to stop judging and look at what were doing before we fault somebody else. Everything we do in the closet, in the dark and behind the closed door is not pretty. Even if the allegations made against him are true I will still continue to pray for him and his family. Yes, we all do wrong and come short of perfection. Many of us use the saying of Jesus, “Judge not that you be not judged” as a free ticket to do whatever they want to do and use certain scripture to justify their own selfish desires. They know that GOD is merciful and that he understands and this is true, but he also expects us to do our best and knows when we aren’t trying to. I do believe in forgiveness and that THE MOST HIGH will forgive a person if they are sincere. However, there are still consequences we must pay. THE MOST HIGH also punishes us in his own way to remind us that we should uphold his holy standard. People often feel as if they can do certain things and get away with it, because THE MOST HIGH doesn’t respond to the wrong they are doing immediately. God’s time is the best time, and when does addresses the issue, I feel sorry for the person who THE MOST HIGH shows his wrath.

I don’t know if these allegations against Eddie Long are true, and I say allegations because that is just how the reports about Eddie Longs’ conduct should be viewed. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty by a jury of their peers. However, even if these allegations are proven to be false in a court of law, the effects that this incident will be the same as if he was found guilty. Why? Because many people are going to believe these allegations that have been made against the preacher and many people already do believe the allegations. So, he is going to end up suffering in many ways either outcome, in which I’m sure these sufferings have only just begun for him.

Let us pray that God brings restoration to all that are involved.

I read below his phone was stolen in June. So it could be an extortion attempt. We will know for sure tomorrow as Bishop Long given his history of honesty, and integrity, regardless of whether or not you agree with his particular bent on Christianity, is unlikely to lie. What he reveals Sunday will I feel be the truth. It would simply be out of character for Bishop Long not to tell the truth. Let us hope and pray these allegations are false. But if not he is unlikely to prolong his own personal agony over this matter.

After years of watching the coordinated selective shakedown of Catholic clergy, I can tell you that gay politics may be involved here. The Catholic Church was selectively targeted for attacks because of its unwavering opposition to gay marriage, abortion, embryonic stem cell research, male clergy, and other positions that contradict the Brave New World of the secular progressives. (The rate of sexual improprieties in the Catholic church was always far less than public school teachers and equal to protestant groups — yet the Catholic Church alone has been in the crosshairs of powerful international special interest groups.)

As a result of studying the issue for years, I urge that Eddie Long is innocent until proven guilty. Note that the reports are all mentioning (1) his strong opposition to homosexuality and abortion and (2) his church’s large influence in society and public policy — the two things that together trigger massive, well-funded negative PR campaigns from the Leftists.

Even if Eddie Long is guilty, it is still God’s prerogative to judge him, not men. He has to stand before God. To decide to take judgement into your own hands will bring a curse upon you. An eternal curse. If Eddie Long did not break any laws (e,g sleeping with an underage boy etc.,) then it is his business to face God and seek repentance if he is indeed guilty. It is the business of the church members to set him aside and look for another leader if he is not morally fit to lead them anymore or they look for another church. Whatever the situation, you nor I are not biblically empowered to judge him otherwise we stand condemned by God. Be careful pharisees and Saduccees.

There’s certainly going to be an element of racism involved in the reporting in the coming days (NY Times headline: “Sex Scandal Threatens a Georgia Pastor’s Empire”.. they didn’t phrase Haggard’s downfall that way).

But what’s important is that Long is a fraud and I hope this scandal encourages two things:

1) More skepticism and scrutiny of Protestant mega-church pastors (regardless of race) who preach reactionary political doctrines. Long, for example, preaches “prosperity gospel” and is well-connected to the white Christian Right elite (Bush, Robertson, etc.).

2) A deep introspection on the part of Protestants on issues relating to power, hierarchy, belief, morality, and what exactly religion is supposed to be about. Catholics have certainly had time to do this as well.

At the core of a lot of American Christianity is hypocrisy and, frankly, disbelief. I don’t think you even need to know much about Jesus to understand basic right and wrong.

It also just so happens that Jesus was NOT a supporter of extravagant wealth and consumption, arrogance, jingoism and enthusiastic war-mongering, and a disdain for the poor.

He supported the direct opposite of those values. Period.

I for one never though any minister fell out of heaven! Only Christ came from heaven .

I know they are QUITE capable of committing sin! I do not see them as they think I do.

The saying “where there is smoke there’s fire” is true, however just because someone is in the fire where all the smoke is doesn’t mean he started the fire.
One can come upon a fire after it was started by someone else.

It could be these young men are lying. But why would they make up such filth on a man who claims anointing and calling from God? They would have to be very very low in their thinking and possess no morals!
Why else would an innocent man, a pastor be accused falsely if the accusers were not the lowest of the low? Unless it is true!

Have they no shame? No conscience? No sense of honor? No fear of God?
Are they insane? Do they not realize the evil of this if it is false?
Do they not realize the evil of this if it is true?

I hope these charges against Long are not true.

But the Bible says The righteous are bold as a lion. It is strange Long did not immediately issue a statement saying the charges are not true! Why didn’t he immediately address the boys publicly saying, “You young men know this is not true! Why are you doing this to me, to the church and to God? Let me pray for you now!”

Jesus said to not judge by outward appearance. Any by outward appearance Long is in deep trouble. This will not go away unless God supernaturally removes it.

Joseph in the Bible was falsely accused of rape, but David really did commit adultery and have Uriah killed.
But homosexuality is a perverse form of sex. It is condemned by God and is an abomination (disgusting). Homosexuality is truly disgusting and for a pastor to be accused of it is a fulfillment of prophecy that evil men and seducers will wax worse and worse.
Long looks and acts guilty not innocent.
I hope he is innocent.
May God not only help Long who is being accused, but God help his accusers!

If the charges are true and Eddie Long did use church trips and gifts to turn these young men’s heads for sexual favors, did he use tax free church funds for purposes other than those of the church? Isn’t that an IRS question if the allegations should be proven. We all pay an enormous amount more in taxes because churches and other tax free groups don’t pay taxes. We do with less disposable income because these organizations are supposed to be spending money for social and religious work. So I do care how tax free dollars are spent.

Someone here commented that the phots came fromt he young men. THe source of the photos has NOT been verified or said to have come from the young men so why is it beeing said here in the comments? Just more individulas that go with the “guilty until proven innocent” ideal.

Bishop Walter Dixon of Atlanta, GA Prayer for the alleged victims Anthony Flagg, Spencer Le Grande, Maurice Robinson and Jamal Parris of the Bishop Eddie Long Sexual Scandals.
My Dear Brother and Sister in Christ
I have been lead by the “Holy Spirit” to write this prayer on behalf of the alleged victims involved in the Bishop Eddie Long of New Birth Missionary Church of Christ, located in Lithonia, Georgia. While I can’t say who is guilty or not, I must say as a father, uncle, nephew and a minister, we as Christians must pray for all including Anthony Flagg, Spencer Le Grande, Maurice Robinson and Jamal Parris.
Scriptures: All have sinned: Romans 3:23, 1 John 1:8, There is a penalty for sin- Romans 6:23 John 3:18. You cannot save yourself-Titus 3:5, James 2:10. Salvation has been provided-Ephesians 2:8-9, John 3:16, John 14:6. The conditions are simple Repent-Luke 13:3. Confess- 1 John 1:9, Romans 10:9. Believe-Acts 16:31. Now is the time for decision- Joshus-24:15. 2 Corinthians- 6:2. Share your new faith Confess Christ before men- Matthew 10:32-33.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him. (John 3:16, 17).
Therefore having been justified by faith, I have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also I have obtained my introduction by faith into this grace in which I stand; and I exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but I also exult in my tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out within my heart through the Holy Spirit who was given to me (Romans 5:1-5).
They may be afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed knowing that by faith He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise me also with Jesus and will present these young men mind, body and most important, there soul with him.
Therefore they do not lose heart, but through their inner flesh is decaying yet their inner soul is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for them an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while they look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporally, but the things which are not seen are eternal (2.Corinthians 4:8,9,14 16-18).
As they lay their fragile body down by faith for their Lord Jesus Christ to be near them to defend them, within them to refresh them, around them to preserve them, before them to guide them, behind them to justify them, above them to bless them. One day we pray they will lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Ghost for all the remaining days of their life.
Our Father, be gracious to your children Anthony Flagg, Spencer Le Grande, Maurice Robinson and Jamal Parris. O God, according to Thy loving kindness and According to the greatness of Thy compassion. They asked for your help, Father they maybe perplexed and maybe afraid sometimes for not being able to see that which the next hour may bring. God if it is your will give your children extended years while they are on earth through your “Grace”.
Father whatever may need to be done to their souls and flesh, please do it? Father once again I ask you to send your angle down from Heaven to watch over them as they weather this storm. Father as they exit this dark tunnel let them be stronger by a renewed Christian faith in your son Jesus name.

This is a very sad allegation and hurts Lord Jesus and the body of Christ. I find it interesting that Bishop Long did not deny these charges. Lets be careful not to start attacking prosperity and whether or not this is valid Biblically. The behavior in question is Brother Long’s character and morals. Let’s pray that if Bishop Long is truly guilty of these charges, he will come forward and make a proper confession. This will enable us to learn from this and make sure in the future we hold our spiritual leaders accountable…let’s make sure when we appoint leaders in the churches and Christian organizations, that we check out their background and as the Bible instruct “not put a novice” in charge.

Ah, sad — but time and time again, the people who speak out most loudly against homosexuality are themselves homosexuals. I hope the bishop stops living his false life with his wife and becomes honest about who he is. I hope he finds a nice man his age to spend the rest of his life with.

Now that would be the happiest ending to this sad story. If he lives in love, and not coercion and deceit, then he will have heaven on earth.

It upsets me to hear such allegations, and if they are true, than it will come to the light. If it is not true, God will come through for Pastor Long. WE OFTEN MAKE THE MISTAKE OF PUTTING PEOPLE WHO ARE IN AUTHORITY OR LEADERSHIP ON A PEDASTOOL . I do not make any excuses for sin at all, but the bible says WE ALL SIN and fall short from the glory of God. This is just another notch for the Devil to use so people will make the excuse that all Christians are hypocrites and going to church is a waste of time. EDDIE LONG DID NOT DIE ON THE CROSS FOR OUR SINS, JESUS CHRIST DID. WE MUST FOLLOW JESUS AND NOT HAVE SATAN DISTRACT US WITH IMPERFECT MEN AND WOMEN. Whooh! I’m sure glad that God is not like man, cause we’d all be struck down right in the middle of our own mess.

All members of the church should demand that no confidential settlement be permitted. The plaintiffs are represented by an outstanding attorney, one who has gone to bat for a young black man in the past and succeeded. Church members should think also of young black men and demand justice, either for the Bishop or the alleged victims. Sweeping it under the rug with a huge cash payment is not the work of any God that I know.

On the other hand, it’s tough economy, people need money and suing those who have them, can be a nice and easy way to get a lot of it, in addition, gay “right” people can be suspected in orchestrating this scandals. Somehow the most powerful gay opposers publicly becoming gays themselves. Do not tell me it’s a coincidence. I am not Long’s supporter, but dumb of you if you think it’s all black and white issue, there is plenty of shadows of gray. Wise up. These gay activists are really getting uglier every day. If this were truly a shakedown, we’d never have heard about it. Who goes to the media, asks for a jury trial and suspiciously asks for no specific dollar amounts in the FOUR lawsuits if they are only after money? And no reputable lawyer these days would take a case knowing they were going to lose or that it was a scam. Such thinking reeks of desperation to continue to believe this man is who he says he is despite evidence to the contrary.

Finally, if this were the shakedown the defense would have us believe, the shakedown would have taken place under a gag order, a confidentiality agreement and an undisclosed sum of money changing hands without public knowledge. No one interested in money publicly humiliates the target, THEN asks for money.

JimmyZATL, I agree and I have said this from the beginning. These young men broke into a office, his office from which I understand has a laptop computer and other items. But, the steal his IPhone. Think people and get away from the hate for one moment. They took this Iphone to get the pictures off and they returned the key to the desk. They were on a mission and this I know. These pictures could be for his wife. I have pictures only for my spouse to see on my Phone.

If these allegations are true, which knowing the legel system as I do, (BJ Bernstein would not proceed to litigation if she did not have what is considered a winnable case, put her reputation and law career on the line if she did not have creditable evidence) it is highly unlikely that the suits would have been filed, I blame the PARENTS of these boys,

Too often we hear that black boys living in single female parents household, need a ROLE model, so Mom will seek despeartely anything walking to give her son a ROLE model, without holding the ABSENT USELESS SPERM DONORS of these sons accountable for being the MALE ROLE MODELS IN THEIR SONS lives. Had these absent sperm donors acted like real men, these young and impressionable boys would have not been easy prey for the predator.

If when the fatal attraction started with their sons, the unwarranted expensive gifts and trips started flowing in,moving into expensive apartments they had confronted the mighty Biship Long, and gotten in his face, their sons would not now be confused as to what their sexual identities are, think about the years of psychological work that is going to have to take place to balance these young men out. No wonder the great mighty Bishop Long needed body guards, the coward that he is, was too afaird that some real father would have beaten the stuff out of him, when he found out what Long was doing to his son.

Back to the mothers, too often I hear black women who are mothers, have too casual an attitude about raising their sons to be strong independent men. They are looking for someone to take on the responsibility of raising their sons, and provide for them too. Maybe as the investigation progresses, it will be revealed that the mothers involved in this litigation, were equally as complict and negligent as the witnesses and elders of New Birth Missionary Church, by their silences, by allowing these lavish and expensive gifts/trips to be heaped on their sons. Black women you need to assume responsibility for these children you brign into the world and turn over to ROLE MODELS without supervision and accountability. How hard was it to ask, Why my son is getting all of this, what does spiritual son mean and what does my son have to do to be a spiritual son?

Jay, how can the elders of New Birth initiate an independant investigation? They do not exist. In 1994, Long abolished the church board. He is God in his New Birth (Cult) Kingdom. It is ashame. But, that is what happens in cults of personality.

I have no opinion on Long’s guilt right now, to me there’s just not enough info to come down on either side. I did want to say I’m worn out with people taking a statement made only for the court of law (innocent until proven guilty) out of context. We all have the right to have opinions about an accused persons guilt or innocence based on ANY information as long as we aren’t serving on their jury. It may not seem fair, particularly when that opinion doesn’t match yours, but there is NOTHING wrong with that. This isn’t a court of law and you have every right to have (and express) your opinion on a person’s guilt in the court of public opinion. Also, I’m so confused as to how homosexuality becomes the focus of churches. How about campaigning against murder or child abuse? All sins are equal I know, but maybe the church should be a little more focused on those sins.

I’ve heard that Bernstein is a great attorney and that she would not have initiated the lawsuit if she didn’t have the documents to back it up.

I watched Jamal Parris speak about Bishop Long on TV last night and it seemed very credible. But what was more interesting was the reaction of some members from New Birth after seeing Jamal speak out. THAT is the video to see. In case you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a MUST SEE!

Let me start off by saying that I am not a member of New Birth. Second I want to say that I am thoroughly disgusted with what I’ve seen and heard as it relates to this story. Bishop Long is like any other person that runs a empire HE’S A BUSINESS MAN FIRST – he just happens to be a preacher. He no different that a doctor – they too are business people first, then your doctor. I am personally upset knowing that a “father” figure such as himself, sent buff pictures of himself in workout clothes to these young men. What are they suppose to think? What are they suppose to get out of that? I find that to be completely unacceptable. Shame on him. I don’t want to judge the Bishop because I myself don’t want to be judged, however he has put himself out there. Let’s see, there was Bishop Earl Paulk, Rev. Jim Swaggart, the Catholic priests (oh yes did I mention that I’m Catholic), and countless others out there that we don’t even know about. My gut tells me that the powers that be at New Birth knew about some of this – they’ve been awfully guiet! It’s interesting that you’ve only seen black ministers come out in support of the Bishop. What’s up with Bernice King…she’s his right hand person, where is Creflo Dollar (watch out now!), where is Andy Young. None of these other powerful figures in out black community have come out in support of the Bishop. Let’s be real about this….this type of non-sense has been going on for years in all churches. And even in the Muslim community, remember the Honorable Elijah Muhammad? He fathered many children by women in his flock. The Bishop just got caught! Come clean Eddie Long and set yourself free. Set these young men free. Has anyone other than me noticed how strange it is that these 4 young men have very similar features and skin tones? Get you good Attorney Eddie, cause the one you’ve got is going to help you go down. Settle this mess out of court and make it go away before you lose more credibility with some members of your congregation and the general public. I love the lord.

I think (cause what I feel does not matter AND when you put emotion into it you lose site of realization) is that something definitely happened, these young men are victims in some way and that Eddie Long wants his congragation to view him as the patron saint. He needs his ego stroked. He’s going to look out there one day and instead of there being 25,000, he will talking and an echo will be coming back at him. He has not played this smart at all! He needs a smart attorney, he needs to keep his mouth shut and he needs to continue to do business as usual. The pulpit hell and damnation preaching he’s doing is making him look like a fool. I could be a believer in his innocence, but some of the stupid moves he’s made call me to wonder – among other things.
