Maybe it’s just an ugly scam.
Maybe it’s a well-coordinated, fairly sophisticated conspiracy among several young men to shake down Bishop Eddie Long, a successful, revered leader who has built New Birth Missionary Baptist Church into a powerhouse of Christian service.
Sad as that would be, it would certainly be the better outcome. Because if the opposite proves true and the allegations against Long are valid, the tragedy deepens.
Lawsuits filed this week by three young men who entered Long’s orbit as mere boys allege truly troubling predatory behavior on the part not just of Long but of those close to him. In short, they claim that Long prostituted the faith he preached and the resources of the church he led in order to satisfy his sexual urges with those who had almost no defense against him.
The allegations include claims that Long, an outspoken critic of gay rights and gay marriage, participated in “covenant ceremonies” in which he and young male parishioners exchanged vows of commitment.
Through his attorney, the bishop strenuously denies all such charges. However, radio interviews and a news conference scheduled for Thursday were canceled, and Long apparently will not address the issue until Sunday, before his New Birth congregation.
In the meantime, Long’s attorney has described the lawsuits as an attack not just on the pastor but on New Birth and its 25,000-member congregation. Church members no doubt feel that way as well, and most have rallied to defend their leader.
If the charges prove false, New Birth is indeed a victim of injustice almost as great as that perpetrated against Long. But if the charges are correct, then New Birth served as an accomplice, witting or unwitting, in a gross betrayal of faith.
Under the circumstances, it’s possible that the truth about the alleged seductions can be established one way or the other relatively quickly. The lawsuits include multiple details of travel and gifts that can be verified or discredited. They cite witnesses who will be legally obligated to testify honestly in court to what they saw or risk charges of perjury. Photos of Long taken by the bishop in his bathroom mirror and allegedly e-mailed to the young men have already been leaked, and other material might be forthcoming.
If the truth is not established fairly soon, however, church elders should launch an independent probe of the allegations. That would be difficult for an institution such as New Birth, which bears Long’s strong and charismatic imprint. But people should never be afraid to seek the truth, especially in a situation like this.
As we all know — as Long himself has no doubt preached — none of us is immune to temptation. We also know that it is human instinct to look up to leaders, both secular and religious, in the belief that they are less vulnerable to the weaknesses that dog all of us.
The danger is that by elevating leaders in our eyes, we elevate them in their own eyes as well. To satisfy our own need to believe in someone better and stronger than we are, we turn mortals into demi-gods and then marvel when they start to act accordingly. Even on the truly humble and well-intentioned, unquestioned faith and confidence can over time have a corrosive effect.
As a young pastor in the ’60s, the late Earl Paulk had been one of the few Atlanta-area white clergy to support Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his civil rights struggle. His leadership skills helped build Chapel Hill Harvester Church into an institution with national influence, politically and spiritually.
Then came his fall. Beginning in the ’90s, Paulk was hit by repeated charges of sexual coercion much like those now facing Long, devastating a congregation that believed in him.
Heros often fail us, but betrayal by a religious leader is probably felt more intensely than any other. Yeah, Mel Gibson turned out to be a jerk, but really, who cares? Yes, President Clinton tarnished his office and legacy, but most people didn’t feel that betrayal personally. With a religious leader the betrayal is intimate, in some ways as deeply felt as betrayal by a spouse or parent.
But just a year ago, speaking at Paulk’s funeral, Long himself took the opportunity to remind mourners that even leaders are not granted perfection.
“We did not, in case you didn’t know, fall down out of heaven,” Long said. “We were taken from among men so we could minister to men.”

Spirit, change God to Cosmos, or “Big Bang” to Cosmic Fart and there’s your answer. it’s (religion) all just semantic, cultural “elitism” isn’t it? you say intelligent design, I say big bang – let’s call the whole thing off! on a more (or less) serious note, I favor the “big bang” because an explosion is random and the end result is unknown. if you look at life (homo sapiens, anyway), there would appear to be nothing “intelligent” about the “design”. if some “Creator” is responsible, he/she must have “designed” this mess with a wicked hangover. even if there is an “end game” to the intelligent design, is ANYTHING going as planned? as I said, at least with the big bang, I am not disappointed because there is no plan.

Romans 1:19-20… whether you believe the Holy Scriptures or not will not matter to no one except yourself if you leave the world lost in darkness and spiritualy dead in trespasses and sin and of course those you may influence. The Word of God has stood the test of time. The word of God endured before you and I arrived on the cemetery called the earth due to one man’s rebellion against a Holy God who alone is Good. Both you and I will be judged by the Word of God. You are not the first to make fun of the truth. One of the many names for my Lord Jesus Christ is THE WORD,He will have the last Word in the final analysis my friend. Do the work, put in the research concerning the history of mankind of all who trifle with the Only True Living God who sent Jesus Christ into the world according to the scriptures. LMAO..there are those who think Eddie Long is teflon..think again religious nutjobs. Long through his attorney admitted he sent pics to those boys and countered by saying he was in gym clothes and nothing wrong with it. Wait one dam.n minute!! Why in the he.ll would a grown as.s. married man send photos of himself posing in a bathroom of all place to you men? Can anyone with any common sense and logic tell me why? I don’t want to hear all this BS about he is a good Bishop or Pastor. First of all he is not a Bishop, unless he is emulated the priest. Secondly, its a baptist church where there are no Bishops.
Eddie Long and Creflow are nothing but PIMPS of PIETY! These people who can’t pay their damn bills and giving money to these charlatans deserve what they get. Since when any man is above another? Stupid mindless sheep who follow men who covet material possessions. Get over it Eddie is pervert.

The bishop will wrap his response to the allegations in a feel-good sermon for the sheep at New Birth and they will swallow it whole. We balcks are often an emotional people who all too often place logic on the shelf and latch on to theatrics as the gospel, no pun intended. Picture this: tens of slaves armed to help master push Creek Indians off their land and further up country in South Carolina in the 1700’s and not one thought to turn their guns on their master. What is wrong with this picture?

The most important thing that NO ONE has really said anything about are the other young men who “might be” in danger at the Longfellow mentoring foundation. If my child were in the program, I think I would “error on the side of caution” and I would definitely question my child about the things that were occurring past and present.
However, I don’t believe that the allegations are a scam. I think B.J. Bernstein is a smart lady and would not have pursued such a high profile case without due diligence. I also find it hard to believe that three young men would put themselves out there for the world to see and not actually be telling the truth. It’s still very hard for a young black man to come out of the closet in 2010.
If true, I hope Bishop Eddie Long will admit it on Sunday, step down and move on with his life. It would be a very bad scenario for him to say that none of it occurred; only to have additional people come forward and tarnish his reputation further. The allegations are bigger than Bishop Eddie Long, because this involved a 25,000 plus congregation and other people who were in close contact with him.
If not, he should make a statement to clear his name and the church of responsibility for this huge mess. I wouldn’t want him to wait and let this play out in the media or in a court room. It’s an ugly situation and more than just his personal life is involved, because he is accused of putting young men on the payroll for unmentioned job descriptions, taking them around the world for no apparent valuable reasons and buying them lavish gifts. In my opinion, that is a waste of the churches valuable resources and should be investigated.
Otherwise, I will continue to pray for him (regardless of the situation), the young men, others who might be out there and his entire congregation. This is sad no matter what the outcome.

Ty,
I think it is too late now. I believe Bishop Long is living in some unrealistic world of fantasy. First, he underestimated the strength and intelligence of these young men. I know his type. They pray on the weak. In his mind, he is still believes these young men are weak. If not, he would have settled immediately. I am sure the attorney reached out to the church prior to going public.
And once again, for those who keep trying to defend the pictures. What old man takes pictures of himself of that nature? Time and time again, we know why people take these pictures–to send to someone else.
If not the pictures, what about the car? What about the allias. We know this is true because the AJC investigated the claim and found it to be true. Do you need an actual picture of him having sexual relations? Come on now.

Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence.
No one shall be held guilty of any penal offense on account of any act or omission which did not constitute a penal offense, under national or international law, at the time it was committed. Nor shall a heavier penalty be imposed than the one that was applicable at the time the penal offense was committed.
PLAIN LANGUAGE VERSION:
You should be considered innocent until it can be proved that you are guilty. If you are accused of a crime, you should always have the right to defend yourself. Nobody has the right to condemn you and punish you for something you have not done.

Part I: The vicious nature of some comments is as injurious as the activities we are discussing. Many of the members of New Birth are innocent victims as well (some are not) and we need to be careful that we are not making more victims as we exploit this tragedy to perpetuate our own private and personal agendas and vendettas against the church.
Some people who are commenting are exploiting this situation to perpetuate their dislike/hate of Christianity. The real issue is that when there are no basic moral or ethical standards where human sexuality is concerned we open the door for any and all type of sexual exploitation; crossing boundaries; pushing the limits of behavior, then blaming that behavior as genetically inspired, or otherwise out of our self-control (we can’t help it). Humans are not animals, we get to chose what we do and to whom we do it, sexually or otherwise. All sexual activity is a choice, good bad or ugly.
Secondly as these discussions go, we are not saying anything about the alleged victims in this case. Homosexuality and heterosexuality is not the issue in this case. Clergy (priest, Imam, Rev. Bishop, Rabbi, etc) sexual exploitation is. Clergy (especially pastoral clergy-put your religious equivalent in here) should under no circumstances be engaging in sexual activity with the sheep they pastor, even if the sheep consent or initiate the encounter. For that matter, choir directors, deacons, trustees, etc., should not be having sex (homosexually or heterosexually) with persons they council, lead, direct or have influence over. It is never morally or ethically acceptable. It can never be morally or ethically justified, ever. Unfortunately, we have not been trained to understand this, to know what it is and how to take steps to prevent it. So we (clergy and non clergy) have engaged in activities that are hurtful, not only to the clergy but to the church and the willing accomplices.
David Cassidy
September 24th, 2010
9:41 am
Part II: Thirdly, Bishop Long may be the victim. To “knowingly” “do dirt” with the intention of hitting “pay-dirt” is the moral equivalent of Judas exploiting Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. If these young men are proven to have gathered together to exploit Bishop Long, (to exercise some sort of vendetta) then we have another serious problem in our churches; violence as a tool of conflict resolution. Sometimes our good is “evil spoke of”. However, we should never forget that those who cheat with you will cheat on you and those who lie with you will also lie on you. When Judas sells you out you die just like Jesus.
Bishop Long can also be the victim of collusion if the members who were close to him, covered his activities instead of correcting them. Those who did not hold him accountable for his alleged unethical behaviors created and perpetuated an environment that made exploitation possible. In this case he became a victim of his own status and the power and protection bestowed upon him by his church’s authority.
No one is unwounded. Those who seek to exploit this to support their own sexual, religious, or political agendas are wounded too. Hurting people hurt people.

In all seriousness as far as any church investigation is concerned, there is a very simple formula that was given by Jesus for these situtations:
Matthew 18
“15″If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.”

Will he tone it down and walk the path of humility our Lord walked? Will he admit his pride and arrogancy has helped put him in this position?
If this can change him for the better, then “all things work together for the good…”

I would like to see his congreation stand by him and help him repent and pray for him..there in his church for Sundays to come if there is truth in this. Get the splinter in you own eye!!!

Don’t Forget. (cue Kung Fu chimes and Asian flute); “yes grasshopper – you have snatched the pebble from my hand – time for you to leave.” did you read my @@ post about the law being “opiate of the masses”. religion HAS NO MEANING beyond the ability to control the behaviors of otherwise uneducated, superstitious, fear-driven lemmings. that’s not to say that religion does not have meaning to educated, critical thinking, knowledge-driven people, who simply embrace a lifestyle because it helps them get through the day (like any opiate or drug), but as jcon noted, it is a deeply personal thing, and the idea that folks like Crefalo Dollar, Earl Paulk, Eddie Long, the Pope, Billy Graham or Pat Robertson believe they are some sort of conduit or facilitator between the known and the unknown; well, that’s about a “meaningful” as the difference between enjoying a bourbon on the rocks at the end of the day, and drinking oneself to death.

Why does everyone think that because you are a preacher you cant have money? Has anyone ever considered that Bishop or other leaders might own a few businesses on their own, invest in real estate, or the stock market, be part of a MLM company, wrote a book, own some sort of intellectual property or any of the other tons of ways to create wealth for yourself??? Why does a preacher or religious leader always have to be “preying on the flock”. I’m not rushing to judgment on any of this sex/gay ALLEGATIONS simply because ALL OF THE FACTS are not known. But I am sick of people accusing religious leaders of “stealing from the church or the flock” without any facts, truth, or EVIDENCE!!! Does any accuse Tony Robbins, Les Miles, John Maxwell, Zig Ziegler, Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki or countless others of getting rich off of their flock?? All of these individuals have a “faithful” following of people, are paid to speak at events & etc…, and they also save, invest, and own other businesses, non-profit organizations, intellectual property, minerals & metals and etc… But you never hear of them being accused of getting rich off of their “flock”.

Church folk are plain disturbing. How can you say the pictures prove nothing, i mean really. Why would a SANE man want to send other men pictures of himself. I mean come on people. STOP being over spiritual and look at the common sense in things. It’s a sad thing to happen, but being ignorant is far worse!

Bill Graham at the start of his career in 1957 sat down with his staff and made these rules:
He would never handle any of the contributions for the ministry
He stayed in the same little home (and is still there) in N.C.
He would never ride or be alone with a female other than a family member
He would have an aide with him at all times when traveling (even to walk first into a hotel room, etc.)
There were some other rules but he was a very wise man and the Lord was able to use him greatly.

Dear “mystified”,
Here is wikipedia’s definition for bigot:
A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, irrationality, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs or genetics. The predominant usage in modern American English refers to persons hostile to those of differing race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, various mental disorders, or religion.

The Boner can’t relate at all to the Bishop’s dilemma. He just goes for the chicks, although he has said on occasion he might could swing the other way, if the meat looked real good.
The Boner hopes everyone likes his Plague on America. He worked very hard on it. You can tell, can’t you?
Now, to get down to the real nitty gritty. Debbie, the Boner’s old lady, caught him last night with Chrissy on the satanic altar. She was royally p!ssed. Debbie didn’t even know about the satanic altar being installed in the guest house. You can just imagine the fit she pitched when she saw her darling hubby and Chrissy going at it. Debbie called them all kinds of bad names. I can’t say them here, but “hypocrites” was the very milder one.The Boner tried to calm her down, telling her that Newtered’s wives understand this sort of thing, why can’t she? After all, it’s the message that counts, not how he lives. Geez, woman, get a grip already! I don’t know how this will all play out but Chrissy got on her broom as quick as she could and was outta here! Then of course, the Boner escaped to the tanning bed. Don’t know as yet whether Debbie will be filing or not.
Now the DEA wants us to send them all our old Vicodin, Percoset, Oxycontin, etc. Hell, I ain’t sending them mine, I’m selling them all to Rush. He’s offering some pretty big dough for all that he can get. Rush will put them to good use, you better believe it!
Old Rush can relate to the Bishop’s problem! Maybe he’ll counsel him.

Long is a charlatan just like the majority of these megacon businesses. Oh the weak minded folks just don’t want to believe their “Pastor” is guilty. Think again. Billy Graham has money, The Pope has money, but do you have to flaunt it? Some wear sucess in their heart, others externally. As christians, we are to walk humbley. We should use Jesus as our pattern, not Donald Trump or Tony Robbins.

Sounds like you condone is behavior of sending pics to young me. This BS of health and fitness is total BS, if he wanted them to be health then why did he not send them a routine or a regiment rather than a picture. I know the majority of Georgians are slow but this is pathetic. NO MARRIED MAN SHOULD SEND YOUNG MEN PIC OF HIMSELF IN THE BATHROOM, PERIOD, OR ANYWHERE ELSE.!! He had people over the youth academy, did he send them pics too? Guess not! A grown man sending pics to young men..pathetic and sad. I guess the label he calls him self “Bishop” helps him to emulate his priest friends.
Has he giving young women of the church gifts such as cars, vacations, money, jewelry, etc. All I hear is about the young men he seems to flaunt himself around.
Real men stand up…you know darn well you would not even send your close friends a pic of you in spandex or any other pic. Long is a p…y! never worked hard a day in his life and all he has done is con these dumb women into coming to his business. Pimps of Piety nothing more. Jets, cars, bodyguards, rolex…LMAO..hoodwinked the flock.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
First of all NO I am not defending the fact that he “allegedly” sent pictures to young men… keyword “ALLEGEDLY”! Defending the fact of why he took the pics! Two things stike me:
1) Rather this is true or not, Eddie Long should not be in this position. Too many church are personality cults, where the minister is not accountable to anyone. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Newbirth needs an expert in organizational governance to come in and set up a heirarchy where everyone holds everyone accountable.
2) Just like the Bynum/Weeks road show, the enemies of God have a reason to celebrate. The church is supposed to represent God on earth. It has been granted both authority and power, along with that power and authority comes responsiblity. Without evaluating the merits of this suit, simply ask yourself how the world sees the behavior of the church and is called to salvation.

@@, am not contesting or questioning your ethics or experience as a juror. I have never been charged in criminal court, but I have participated in the civil (Family Law) dog and pony show more times than I care to discuss. at the end of the day, it is not possible for the court to administer “justice” and it is not possible because people lie. as was noted, in civil court (especially family court), “perjury” (lies) is a legal tactic and not a sanctionable offense. politicians lie, ministers lie, attorneys murderers lie, and police officers lie. not all, but think about the weakest link in a chain. we “presume” the chain will support the weight, but for some reason we do not “presume” there is a weak link. ergo, I am not one to take such “leaps of faith”. oh, and about 15 years ago I was found to be in contempt and thrown off a jury in a civil case because I refused to listen to a married man and his mistress squabble over a wrongful termination.

Great, BALANCED, blog!
Honestly, I don’t have a single personal pic of him not dressed like that unless it was a formal setting. He’s been into body building since a cancer scare some years ago. If you go into the church gym, there are portraits of him and other dressed in the same manner. He’s known for the muscle shirt thing.
I wonder… Why is BJ already doing the media rounds? Doesn’t that compromise her clients? She also needs to advise them. Anthony still has his Facebook page going with some questionable photos of himself to say the least. They say, “A strong case is tried before the court. A weak case is tried before the media.”
I was with him a lot during the time this supposedly happened and none of these names ring a bell.
I haven’t attended New Birth in a couple of years, but my leaving have nothing to do with him. It was the members and SOME of the leadership. A great amount of this congregation is troubling. They do view and treat him as God, which as a result creates an unproductive atmosphere. They hang on every word, I guess, but his “I am not God” speeches. “The danger is that by elevating leaders in our eyes, we elevate them in their own eyes as well. To satisfy our own need to believe in someone better and stronger than we are, we turn mortals into demi-gods and then marvel when they start to act accordingly.” <- VERY well put!
I still tune to service online. And I will say that while I was trying to bring something to the table for the church unlike 80% that want to take, when I was hit with devastating news (and honestly tried to hide it) Bishop Long and New Birth went WAY out of their way for me.
One of these guys broke into the office and made off with $100+k. Apparently, that wasn’t enough.
The only things I can see him guilty of is an ego that has to be put in check occasionally, dressing poorly and a bad hair piece.

——–In terms of all this legal analysis, Eddie Long has not been charged with a crime — at least not yet– where the result of the trial would be a guilty verdict or finding of not guilty. In criminal cases, the burden of proof is “guilt beyond a reasonable doubt,” a very high standard. The cases brought by these young men are civil cases where the burden of proof is “a preponderance of the evidence.” That means that the trier of fact (judge or civil jury) need only favor one side by just enough to tip the evidentiary balance slightly to one side or the other. Normally, plaintiffs (those who bring the civil suit) want to tip the balance of evidence very clearly in their favor. What will be crucial in this civil case will be the evidence the young man have to present to show the defendant (Eddie Long)liable for injuries or damage to these young. If Long had a chnace to settle this carse before it went public, he shiould have doen it. Because if these young men have a lot of evidence, Long and his entire congregation will lose…big.

How interesting it all is. You place theses HUMANS above everyone. You buy them fancy clothes, jewerly, big fancy cars, and homes. You give them your last dollar and worship them. ok. Then you FLIP out when they only do as Humans do and that is, just be human. THESE humans are NOT GOD.
You see a homeless person who ask you for a dollar, or a homeless child that could use any hand out. Yet you turn your back look the other way.
Yet you call yourself a christian. Reminds me of back during slavery, You Lynch some one and have the NERVE to go to church and pray to God and claim your a Christian and claim you are living accourding to the word of God. Oh Really? WHAT GOD? Zeus? Odin, Buddah? Perhaps thats who you are putting your faith in because NONE of them are real.
The real God dont need your money. God does not need Jewerly and a fancy suit to get his word across.
Nor does he live in a Mansion. Nor does he send pictures of him self Flexing his muscles and showing you his body Oops..that would be Heady Eddie. Anyway. Sad, Tragic..thats just a few adjectives to discribe this circus That YOU folks created and some of you are still in denial.
But no I am not going to condemn this man. I sin myself daily in one way or another. However, I will not condemn Homosexuals, whores, or any one else why? because who am I? I fall short in the sight of the creator as well. So I will NOT judge Heady Eddie. On the same coin I will NOT give anyone like him my hard earned money to listen to him preach the word of God to me. The bottom line is that we yearn for things to talk about. We need things to talk about. We want things to talk about. Jay and folks like him help to fill that void for us. We should thank those that offer up blogs for our daily use. We should also give a moment of our time to the advertisements that help fund these blogs for without them, what would we have. Where would we go. What would we do.
By the way, Jay, might I suggest that you create a little more ambiance by introducing perhaps a coffee-shop screen background with persons sitting around tables and conversing. You could even let the regulars choose a character on screen to represent them, an avatar if you will. Their posts could show up in little bubbles. The possibilities… and if this idea pans out, please do remember from whence it came. Thank you ever so much.
