NOTE: This post, a copy of today’s AJC column, includes material published earlier on the blog.
Eight years ago this week, the Bush administration was set to launch an all-out “shock and awe” publicity campaign designed to drive us into war in Iraq. (You may recall that the effort was held back until after Labor Day because, as a White House official later explained, “from a marketing point of view, you don’t introduce new products in August.”)
It’s important that the American people remember that campaign, because it reminds us how easily fear can be used to manipulate public opinion. Dire warnings of mushroom clouds rising over American cities and of Iraqi unmanned aerial vehicles launching WMD attacks against us may seem implausible in hindsight, but coming from top U.S. officials, they seemed all too real. Over the next few months, they frightened the American people and Congress into an ill-conceived invasion that would cost more than 4,000 American lives and hundreds of billions of dollars.
Tonight, President Obama is scheduled to go on national television to announce that the U.S. combat role in Iraq has finally ended. Although 50,000 troops remain, they are no longer actively deployed in support of Iraqi security. In fact, in his radio address Saturday, Obama reiterated his pledge that “by the end of next year, all of our troops will be home.”
The most interesting thing about the president’s speech tonight will be its tone. As he did Saturday, Obama will no doubt offer a well-deserved tribute to the more than a million Americans who have served in uniform in Iraq. He is also certain to note that the drawdown honors his 2008 campaign pledge. (It’s hard to give him a lot of credit for that, though, since the withdrawal schedule was largely set by President Bush.)
In a speech last week to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vice President Joe Biden was largely upbeat about the situation in Iraq, noting that violence has decreased from three or four years ago and that Iraqi security forces now have responsibility for defending their country. Biden also claimed that “Iraqi leaders who once settled disputes through violence are at this very moment ironing out their differences in face-to-face negotiations,” predicting that those negotiations will soon produce a new Iraqi government.
I wish I shared Biden’s optimism, but I don’t. While the 2007 surge of U.S. troops succeeded in halting the unraveling of Iraq, the larger goals of the surge remain unmet. The Iraqis have yet to enact an oil law to fairly distribute the proceeds of their national wealth, and they have yet to work out how to share power among their major sects. As a result, more than five months after national elections in March, no new national government has taken shape.
And without progress, there will be regression. Although it remains below peak levels, violence has begun to increase again, and the Iraqi people appear increasingly discouraged about the prospects of democracy actually functioning. Each week without an elected government moves them closer to reverting to cruder, more familiar forms of authority.
For all those reasons and more, I suspect that Obama will be more careful than Biden in expressing his expectations about Iraq’s future. At best, he could argue that the U.S. military mission in Iraq has been a success, but he cannot claim that the war itself has been won.
In fact, the Iraq war is likely to end as the war in Vietnam ended. That doesn’t mean that the last Americans in Baghdad will have to be airlifted by helicopter from the Green Zone. It does mean that as in Vietnam, events in Iraq have now been arranged to allow U.S. forces to be withdrawn under seemingly honorable conditions, leaving Iraq’s future to be determined by Iraqis.
As it should have been all along.

In the main, I agree with what you wrote…except I have very little sympathy for their “no government” problem. If they wanted a functioning government, they should not have opted for a parliamentary system. They sowed it, now they have to reap the consequences.

Man, the last nine years have been grueling with these endless wars. Will obama have the guts to get out of afghanistan and cut our losses? I, like millions of others are tired of war and its collateral damage to the men, families, and our country. We had saddam boxed in, war was so unnecessary but here we are dazed and confused almost a decade later.

Well, there you go again. Blaming it all on Bush. This Obama’s been President for almost two whole years, so he gets the blame now. Besides, Bush was a Great President that always told the truth and acted all honest-like.
I thought I’d add that to save Sister Dusty some time so she can focus more on her Whopper Jr. at lunch break.
Anyhow, in a way it’s kind of a sad time, what with the war about over for us in Iraq except for 50,000 or so of our troops and maybe another 1,000 deaths of our troops there. I reckon the Towelheads don’t care if the troops we leave ain’t combat troops because they’re going to try and kill them just the same. Anyways, I’m sure glad none of my family was killed in that war. Too bad about the other families, but you got to crack some eggs to make a omelette. Maybe if us Republicans can get back in power we can find another place to start a war.
Have a good day everybody.

“In June 2010, 42 percent of respondents told Gallup that they were conservatives, while 20 percent claimed to be liberals, and 35 percent said they were moderates,” he said. “The nearly even division in partisanship and the conservative tilt in ideology suggest that the current equilibrium in the electorate is far more Republican than the status quo in the House.”

Excuse my cynicism, but he’s pledged to withdraw all forces by the end of next year? He’s had more time to consider this, but if his Gitmo pledge is considered….

Since Jay was either too busy or too lazy to write an original article this AM about the situation in Iraq, here’s a link to a Yahoo.com story entitled “Fearing the future, few Iraqis cheer US departure” :
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ml_iraq
From the article:
“Of course we were against the occupation, but in 2007 the Americans came up with a good plan for fighting al-Qaida, not Iraq,” said Col. Abdelsaad Abbas Mohammed, a Fallujah commander in the government-supported Sunni militia, known as the Awakening Councils. “Americans have committed many mistakes, but they did not go into houses and chop people’s heads off.”
In the three provinces that make up the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq, the American military departure is also cause for concern. The Americans have often been perceived as the protectors of the minority Kurdish population, which was repressed under Saddam, but later carved out a relative oasis of stability in northern Iraq.
Othman Ahmed, 38, and a lawyer from the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah, said Iraqi politicians would like to return Iraq to the strong centralized government of the former regime — meaning the Kurds’ hard-won autonomy could be at jeopardy. The friction between the Kurds and the central government is considered a potential flashpoint. Both claim a wide swath of territory stretching from the Syrian to the Iranian border, which includes the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.”

Almost to a man, they “had priorities other than military service”.) so will they learn nothing at all from the deadly debacles that they speciously foisted and fear-mongered on the nation and world.
6,787 GIs KIA’d needlessly. And counting. Tens of thousands more maimed and ruined. Countless families broken just to satisfy the vicarious bloodlust of gutless little men in Washington and elsewhere. Ungodly amounts of Uncle Sam’s money spent, wasted, “lost” and given away to the corporate paymasters who now run the country.
And one has to wonder if it is not at all out of the realm of possibility that a bunch of thick headed, small-balled chickenhawks, with DickHead Cheney in the lead role, are trying to find some clandestine, back room, closed door gathering place to plan the next invasion. Welcome to Tehran!

The little drone, Ahmadinejad has his own drone in the works.
Ahmadinejad said Sunday that if Israel ever attacked Iran, “the span of our reaction would be the entire planet Earth.”
The drone has been in the works for seven or eight years, Alizadeh said, and won’t “disturb the regional balance” until mass production is carried out successfully. At one point about three years ago, supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei visited the plant where it was being built, he said.
“I asked the leader to do a favor and pray for the drone,” Alizadeh said. “He stroked the head of the drone and said a prayer. Believe me, after that prayer, we all got a special energy.”–LATimes

Jay,
The Bush/Cheney ill-conceived, unecessary fiasco that is the Iraq war, “is” because the nightmare continues. First, is was never worth the lives of our military or the lives of innocent civilians, especially children. If we haven’t learned anything else about this tragedy, and we probably haven’t, then it should be to think for ourselves and question the motives and the rhetoric of “leaders”, especially when that rhetoric is a call for the use of force. Second, when so-called leaders, especially those who have never served in the military or in combat, call those of us who question their call for the use of force “unpatriotic or “traitor”, we should be especially supicious.

“The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday that over the last five years, the Dallas Democrat has awarded up to $20,000 in 15 scholarships to two grandsons, two great-nephews, and aide Rod Givens’ children between 2005 and 2008. USinUK, Mick: there was a little piece just yesterday in the Financial Times attempting a defense of Tony Blair, that other former UK leader much loathed in the UK, but not so much in the US.
“… Vitriol has been poured on to Mr Blair from both the left and the right. Tony Parsons, writing in the left-leaning Mirror newspaper, suggested that “Tony Blair should amputate a limb and give that to the British Legion”, adding that “boys will be in wheelchairs for the rest of their lives because of this pious, Bible-bashing hypocrite”. Writing in the rightwing Daily Mail, Max Hastings suggested that “Blair’s £5m gift is designed to make himself feel better”, and noted “there is a long tradition of big crooks giving big to charity”.
Perhaps it is this kind of reaction that persuaded Mr Blair to fly to the US on the day of his book launch, for a dinner at the White House, linked to the Middle East peace talks. It is one of the oddities of modern British politics that the two dominant figures of the past 30 years – Mr Blair and Lady Thatcher, the Conservative former prime minister – have both ended up far more revered in the US than in the UK. Both were accused by their enemies in Britain of succumbing to megalomania. Both exhibited a kind of moral fervour and certainty that goes over well in the US, but seems to alienate British commentators, who prefer their leaders dry, with a twist of irony.”

And that was to liberate those wretched people from a psychopathic dictator who also fooled the entire world that he had the WMD. Unfortunately, Muslims being Muslims, involved us in defending the good ones against the bad ones. In hindsight, had we known that any difficulties ensued in the courageous effort would trigger the unpatriotic rejections of the Democrat Party, we would have turned a blind eye to the perpetual slaughter of the Iraqi people. We have not completed nation building, or, said another way, we have not won the peace yet. However, we have won the war and this stupid mindset that we somehow lost or are ending this in a Vietnam style military stalemate is a ridiculous proposition.

AmVet, I beg to differ. the neo-cons learned much from Vietnam. have you ever heard the old marketing mantra; “give them a razor, then sell them the blades.”? the Cold War in general, and Vietnam (actually, SE Asia, we/CIA were waging war in Laos before the Gulf of Tonkin) in particular followed this business plan. the “razor” is the threat of worldwide Communism and dominoes falling, the blades are provided by the military-industrial complex (weapons). of course, you can’t “sell” weapons without a war…, well you can, but you sell a whole lot more when you’re at war. so, Ike was right. the M-I complext “partners” with neo-cons (especially chickenhawks like Cheney). since Communism self-destructed, there had to be a new “razor” for America; enter “global war on terrorism”. it will be interesting to see how much Obama speaks to Afghanistan. I think there are subtle, tactical differences in fighting a Cold War and a War on Terrorism, and I think the M-I complex knows this. the cynic in me thinks (knows) they “own” Obama, just as Wall Street and the insurance companies do. Anyone remember Country Joe and the Fish?
Come on Wall Street, don’t move slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go.
There’s plenty good money to be made
Supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.
It’s “what we’ve been fighting for”.

When the trumpet sounds you and the other born-again believers in that automobile will be instantly caught away — you will disappear, leaving behind only your clothes and physical things that cannot inherit eternal life. That unsaved person or persons in the automobile will suddenly be startled to find the car suddenly somewhere crashes…. Other cars on the highway driven by believers will suddenly be out of control and stark pandemonium will occur on … every highway in the world where Christians are caught away from the drivers wheel.”

Jay, you mention what the Iraqis have not done… Let me see, I think it took 11 years of 13 colonies working towards a common goal to come up with our Constitution.
Keep looking at the negatives…. What about the positives, the construction of schools, education for girls, better medical facilities, people being taught how to farm, raise cattle, the opening of small manufacturing businesses…. etc, etc….
Has it been perfect no, will it soon be perfect no… You have people that now have a taste of Democracy and they are trying to embrace the idea,, however, on the other hand, you have people that want to go back to the old ways…
As a retired military officer, having served in two wars, I mourn the loss of our young people and those injured during the War. I guess I was spared, and I thank God for that…. The theme of the post was how the Beck/King example illustrate the tactics of those who disagree with them. With Beck, it’s the familiar playbook of personal attacks, demonizing, searching for character flaws to weaken credibility and support.
My experience on this blog is that flaws in Dr. King’s past are raised in response to this tactic by the Left on one of their heroes. The Left, perceiving it an effective tactic, minimizes or downplays its importance relative to their icons.
It has nothing to do with length of service. There was, what, 11 years from Dr. King assuming leadership of the SCLC to his assassination, while Beck’s been on Fox how long? If anything, that illustrates how rapidly the Left moves against those whom they want to neutralize.

Driving to work this morning, I allowed myself to listen to thirty-seven minutes of professional concern troll Little Tommy Friedman being interviewed by Brian Lehrer. I don’t really have an excuse for that.
But anyway, Friedman informed me that he was perfectly fine with building “the World Trade Center Mosque”, he supported the people who provided the permitting, etc. All very good. Very civilized, nothing to offend the New York Times’ readership, nor NPR’s listeners.
You know there’s a “but” coming, right? I’ll paraphrase Mister “Suck on This”–
“…but wouldn’t it be good if they raised the money for this World Trade Center Mosque project from a million American Muslims, sending ten dollars each, in support of this outreach?” For good measure Little Tommy repeated this to make sure we Got It.
There was something so… so our-Paul about this.
So very “Yes, I’ve carefully considered both sides and I’ve staked out a Perfectly Reasonable position. But I will feed the FoxNews Stupids something they can hang on so that I will continue to have some cred in the opposite camp, if only to get myself quoted far and wide as That Liberal Who Can Bravely Disagree With You Dirty Hippies.”
And really, to fully appreciate how intellectually dishonest and offensive his little “one million Mooselems” bit really is, consider this. Consider how I’d be regarded if I were to note a local synagogue or Jewish community center being built, somewhere. Suppose I were to suggest “sure, this is a nice synagogue they’re building, but wouldn’t it be nice if it were funded by a million American Jews sending ten bucks apiece, to tell the world they’re not cool with Israel routinely incinerating Palestinian children in retaliation for some jerry-rigged Hamas attack? Very reasonable suggestion, yes?”

Here’s further evidence of Hitchens’s “conservatism”.
“In 2006 in a town hall meeting in Pennsylvania debating the Jewish Tradition with Martin Amis, Hitchens commented on his political philosophy by stating “I am no longer a socialist, but I still am a Marxist”. In 2009, in an article for The Atlantic entitled “The Revenge of Karl Marx”, Hitchens frames the late-2000s recession in terms of Marx’s economic analysis and notes how much Marx admired the capitalist system he was calling for the end of, but says that Marx ultimately failed to grasp how revolutionary capitalist innovation was. Hitchens was and still is a strong admirer of Argentine revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara, commenting that “[Che's] death meant a lot to me and countless like me at the time, he was a role model, albeit an impossible one for us bourgeois romantics insofar as he went and did what revolutionaries were meant to do — fought and died for his beliefs.”"

Iraq in a rear view mirror should hold the warning of “Objects in mirror appear stupider than you Think” After reading David Brook’s take on this subject I can only shake my head in consternation. I wonder if we would ask American’s before we invaded if it would be worth the price in lives and treasure, would they would have been behind it? And not just American lives, our casualties have been miniscule in comparison to Iraqi deaths. Sadam was definitely a very bad guy but in my opinion the entire war was not worth the price of deposing him. Not to mention the black hole it left in the Middle East which Mahmoud Ahma-crazy-jad was more than happy to fill.
I would venture that everyday Iraqis would agree. Brooks mentions they have more cell phones now. Now there’s a trade off, personal communications are up but life expectancy is considerably down. Oh, and oil production is nearly to pre-Sadam levels, and wasn’t that the whole point friends and neighbors? That is a hard choice to make, an I-phone or your kid blown up? “Faith in a higher power. Faith in a sovereign God. Pretty simple actually.”
LL–Maybe I’m splitting hairs a little bit, but any God which exists outside of the world we know, who can “do anything” as you stated above, is the very definition of “supernatural”:
1. Of or relating to existence outside the natural world.
2. Attributed to a power that seems to violate or go beyond natural forces.
3. Of or relating to a deity.
4. Of or relating to the immediate exercise of divine power; miraculous.
5. Of or relating to the miraculous.
I understand the motivation for believing in such a supernatural being, given our limited powers of understanding and our desire for security in an unsecure world. Personally, I believe in God as well, or more specifically, Emmanuel: God Within.

Unfortunately the Bible is often used out of context. Take for instance when Jesus said it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven. He was illustrating how many “rich” people make their wealth their god and cannot seem to let it go. But this verse is often used to ridicule Jesus’s comment. It’s a “big picture” thing. Yoiu can take one verse that says Judas went and hung himself. You can then find another verse in the Bible that says go do ye likewise.
Again, I don’t pretend to have all the answers about the Bible. I just profess to be a Christian and try like crazy to live through Christ’s teachings.

“I’m not measuring your faith, or lack thereof. I won’t criticize you for what you believe.”
No problem, LL, that’s probably the most loving position to take anyway. The reason I don’t buy into mainstream Christian/Jewish/Muslim thought is due to the dichotomy which is created by appeals to the supernatural. In my entire life, I have never seen the Laws of Physics violated. To be forced to repudiate everything I have seen/heard/felt/experienced in order to join some club, however grandiose the promises of an afterlife that membership to that club includes, is too steep of a price to pay for me. I’ve got enough of my own schizophrenia to deal with without having to rationalize two different realities: the reality we can see, hear, taste, touch and smell vs. the reality described in supernaturally based books like the Bible.
“I just find it sad that so many relish the opportunity to take a shot at Christian’s about virtually anything. These same people play PC with every other group in the world, but Christian’s are open game.”
I can’t speak for others, since I lump all mythology into the same boat, but my guess is that Christianity is picked on more here in the US simply because it is far and away the dominant religion. Thus far, I have never been proselytized by a Muslim, Buddhist or Shinto.

Maybe Iraq won’t be a stable democracy as many of us would hope. Maybe that’s because Obama published his withdrawal schedule in th NY Times. While the cost in lives and dollars is horrendous, the implication that the Iraqis will wid up doing what they wold have done anyway is insulting and preposterous. Here are a few of th epositives. An evil dictator was displaced. The Iraqis have at last a chance at democracy, a chance they certainly wouldn’t have had otherwise. Tens of thousands of terrorists have been killed. There hasn’t been another 9/11 tragedy. The oil has been flowing.

Dear Normal.
One thing I do to support the troops is to actually support them by not speaking against them while they are fighting. I have served as a volunteer in VA hospital, just not at this time. I help and contribute to the gift boxes sent to our two church members who serve in Iraq and Afghainstan. I receive the USO magazine “On Patrol ” which came after I sent a contribution. (It even has a nice “Poet’s corner” with poetry written by people in the Service”. I do not put stickers of any kind on my car. Is there anything else you would like to know?
Or maybe you would like to know that my parents are buried in the National Cemetery at Beaufort, SC? That every generation of my family has has someone who fought or served this country? That my oldest son has also served in the military? Just giving you an update since you seem to think yhou are the only one knows anything about serving in the military or supporting them.
