Who’s the real Christian? Beck? Obama? You? Me?

Glenn Beck attacks Barack Obama’s religious beliefs, claiming “it’s a perversion of the gospel of Jesus Christ as most Christians know it.”

But in turn, at least some in the Christian evangelical community say similar things about Beck.

“Glenn Beck promotes a false gospel,” says Christianinvestigator.com. “However, many of his political ideas can help America. Our country was founded on Judeo-Christian values. Mormonism is not a Christian denomination but a cult of Christianity.”

Reports CNN:

Brannon Howse, a conservative writer and founder of Worldview Weekend, which organizes Christian conferences, criticized evangelical participation in that event in a column this week.

“The Apostle Paul warns Christians against uniting with unbelievers in spiritual endeavors,” Howse wrote. “While I applaud and agree with many of Glenn Beck’s conservative and constitutional views, that does not give me or any other Bible-believing Christian justification to compromise Biblical truth by spiritually joining Beck.”

Much of the criticism – along with confusion about the propriety of evangelicals politically linking arms with Mormons – is less formal and more rooted among in-the-pews churchgoers than evangelical elites.

“Jesus Christ’s Church has universally rejected Mormonism’s Anti-Trinitarian theology and its claim that mortals may become God,” David Shedlock, a contributor to the evangelical blog Caffeinated Thoughts, wrote in a post this month. “Beck asks Christian leaders to ‘put differences aside,’ but Beck himself daily peppers his broadcasts with Mormon distinctives because he cannot keep his beliefs to himself.”

Sad stuff, for politics, for religion, for Chrisitianity.

But that’s what happens once you inject religion into politics. Debates about the right government policy degrade into debates over who is more Christian than the other, or whether they’re Christian at all. It’s remarkable how many times we have to relearn that lesson.

Slovak rampage gunman had assault rifle legally. In case you were wondering.

The shooting started on Monday morning in a flat inhabited by a Roma family in a housing estate in an otherwise quiet northwestern district of the city.

The man — a former soldier, according to Slovak media — shot dead four women and one man in the flat and another man outside, before killing a 52-year-old woman with one of a series of random shots into windows.

Police said 13 people had been wounded, reducing the official numbers from Monday by two.

They also declined to speculate on a motive for one of the worst such incidents in the country’s history.

Good morning.

The one true religion is the Religion of the true Americans.
Everyone should know the great spirit.

Many, many moons ago, My great grand-father Walking Turtle explained the human soul. He said, “Jumping Turtle, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

I pondered on this for a long time, then respectfully asked, “Who wins Grand pappy?”.

He replied, “The one you feed”.

Long piece, but it says so much about why America’s Elder-hostiles are such a pain in the ass.

=====

[T]he spectre of “socialized medicine” prevents us moving to single payer, where the incentives for prudent life cycle management of risk across all age and income groups would be better aligned. Why, when we already have what is in effect single payer for the elderly and the poor, do some believe that single payer is “socialized medicine” and why do they fear it so?

I gained some insight into this recently when an elderly relative started complaining about “Obamacare” and how it would lead to “socialized medicine.” Knowing the person had heart surgery courtesy of Medicare and was receiving ongoing monitoring and care, I said, “I didn’t realize you were so unhappy with Medicare.” To which I received the reply: “I’m not talking about Medicare, I’m talking about socialized medicine.”

“How is Medicare different from socialized medicine?” I asked.

“Medicare isn’t socialized,” came the reply. “I pay for it. I pay every month and when I’ve had surgery, I’ve had to pay some of it. Medicare is like any other insurance.”

“Well,” I said, “I know you’re paying a premium for Part B and I know there are copayments and deductibles, but Medicare is a government run health insurance program.”

To which the reply was: “But I’m talking about socialized medicine. You know that whenever the government gets involved in anything, it never does a good job.”

“I had no idea you were having problems with Medicare.” said I. “I always had the impression you were pretty satisfied with it. And with the VA, too. I know you’ve used the VA for some care recently. What problems have you had with Medicare or the VA?”

“Well, none with Medicare or the VA, but I’m not talking about Medicare. I’m talking about socialized medicine.”

“So you’re happy with Medicare?”

“Yes.”

“Would you mind if your [adult] children could buy into it? Your son is unemployed. Would it be OK if he could buy into Medicare?”

“Well, sure. As long as he has to pay like I do.”

You were all wondering how someone could say, “Keep your government hands off my Medicare?” Well, there you have it. Now that I’ve told you, I’m still not sure I understand it. It was one of the most frustrating and at the same time enlightening conversations I have had in a long time. The person with whom I was conversing is intelligent, educated, and not senile.

I’m just not sure how to use the above information. I was unable to persuade my elderly relative. I confess that since the conversation, I have despaired that the national conversation will ever be much better.

Jeremy,

I respect that you are more than likely a good person, as most Mormons are. I think the service that young Mormons are required to do is a good thing. I do think they should rethink making them bike around in 98 degree heat in a suit, but that is just my opinion as a fellow cyclist. :)

I do think Joseph Smith was somewhat deranged though. Seriously, Jesus really was born in Missouri and he looked in a hat with a bunch of rocks in it and was dictated to by an angel? I think he might be considered a pedophile by today’s standards, which Warren Jeffs and his ilk continue in his name today. Until reading John Krakauer’s “Under the Banner of Heaven” I really did not know what Mormons believed, but I found that book very disturbing.

A common theme in most religions is the subjugation of women. Catholicism, Islam, Mormonism, Geez we did not even get the right to vote in the land of the free until 1920, decades after Black men. Albeit Blacks, both men and women, were just as subjugated.

I realize you’re having fun asking people about restoring the country’s honor and all, but you just might want to watch Beck’s interview on the subject to make sure you’re accurately representing the situation:

I’d post links about how Candidate Obama said we needed to do all this restoration stuff, but I’m limited to just a couple links per post. :-)

Bruno

One of my more frustrating moments was when I signed up for a new cable tv service, looked through the listings and thought “neat, Benny Hill!” Set up the recorder and let it run. Okay, so the guide said “Benny Hinn” and I figured some type guy fatfingered it and it was a misprint. Next evening I settle in, turn on the recorder and it’s “what the heck is this?!!?”

Gotta admit, if it wasn’t played for being real it’d be almost as amusing as Benny Hill -

Dear GOP is Gone: Thank you for the respectful tone of you comments. I believe you too are sincere. All I would like to say is simply that history is a difficult thing to protect and many times it gets distorted. There are a lot of twisted things that get said about my faith. People use to believe that we had horns sticking out of our heads. That was a relatively easy myth to debunk however when we would just show people our heads and that they did in fact not have horns, funny but true. Joseph Smith did not believe that Jesus was born in Missouri. He believed he was born in Bethlehem of Judea, near Jerusalem. I believe this false rumor that Joseph Smith believed Jesus was born in Missouri probably came from two historical facts. First, we hold it as our belief that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, another testament of Jesus Christ, which neither adds nor takes away from the true word of the gospel contained in the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with his people that lived on the American continent anciently just as the Bible is a record of the Jews in ancient Israel. From the various prophets’ writings in the Book of Mormon we learn what Jesus meant when he said in the New Testament in John 10:16, “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” Some of the other sheep of which Jesus spoke were those living here on the American continent and their record of the Savior’s visit is recorded in the Book of Mormon. Secondly, in the early days of the church it was established in Missouri. I think these two things were wrongly put together to lead someone to say that we believe Jesus was born in Missouri when we do not believe this. So we believe that he visited ancient America after his death and resurrection and taught his people there, not that he was born in America. I hope that clears it up.

Jeremy OIson

Also, just because I didn’t talk about the other false rumors doesn’t mean that I think they are true, I just don’t have the time to pick apart every single accusation that is made. I just picked this one to demonstrate how facts can be twisted. I mean, come on, have you been watching Glenn Beck, then you must know how it has happened to the United State’s history, how it is being mis-represented, twisted, and in some cases we are being told out right lies…it is the same thing.

It’s funny how you all seem to know what mormons believe, and what you say it so far fetch and wrong. Do your homework if you want to know what they believe go talk to them, not base your info and what your pastors may tell you which is false. We do believe their is a god, we do believe christ atoned for our sins, we do believe in the bible to be the word of god. We believe that are forefathers were inspired men of god, that were led to this land, and set up are constiution and were inspired of god, which has changed, that is why are society is rapidly eroding. Read about how the Constittion was set up, and you see what their beliefs were for this country, that’s why we have prospered, then any other country, because we as a country believed in God. That is changing, the constituion has changed and we as a country will no longer be blessed by god. It will only get worse as are society’s believe in a god and his commandents are being thrown to the side. Educate read, and do your homework.

Anyone who believes in a religion that teaches against the salvation offered by the slain lamb has a spirit of anti-christ in them. They don’t understand the sacrificial system from the Torah and how it applies to the messiah. They don’t understand it was the atonement for our sins and it was laid upon the innocent animal in the Torah and innocent man, the messiah. He was the picture of the sacrificial system, and the end of it.

There is no way God had a sexual relationship with Mary, God is a SPIRIT not a man, however he did put on a robe of flesh and came to be among us as Emmanuel. The Word made flesh, God with us. The Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, no sex involved,it implanted in her womb. To even think anyone of us is going to become a god is blasphemy against God. So God’s Spirit brought Emmanuel to us, his death allowed his Spirit to dwell inside of us. Why do you think the Holy Spirit came to us after his death? It couldn’t dwell inside of him and us at the same time.

Glenn is a good man, he’s just totally lost in this religion, as a child of God, I pray for Beck to find the truth and wake up and realize how wrong his doctrine is. If it was the truth it wouldn’t need it’s own special bible, it would be found within the bible. The oracles of God was given to the Jews, not the mormons. You can’t make up your own doctrine, which Glenn seems to think you can because he says, he doesn’t care if you worship a fork, he doesn’t care what your religion is because God is universal. I guess that means anything goes with God, even fork worship. He’s so wrong on that and if he would get out of the mormon book he might just discover that God destroyed pagans and their false gods. He didn’t welcome them. I wish he would shut up on the lil hinting of mormonism and keep the conservative side.
His Bat Creek Stone was an example, he made like science was behind it, but he only used mormon scientists and authors to legitimize it. He has said on his radio that we are all gods, angels. No we’re not Glenn, we’re human beings born of flesh and blood. Gods aren’t corrupt, angels aren’t corrupt, we die, they don’t.

Those of you that insist that “Mormons” are not, by your definition, ‘Christians’ are absolutely correct. They are NOT! It is sad that some of them try so hard to qualify, under your definitions, as ‘Christians’. They are members of The Church of Jesus Christ. That is the Gospel of Jesus Christ as restored through a prophet of Jesus Christ because his gospel had been so bastardized and distorted hundreds of years after his death. If His gospel was left, intact, upon the earth, in it’s pure and original form, all of you evangelicals know that (or maybe you don’t) because your not members of the organization that claims to have his gospel and authority, to act in his name, from the time he left the earth and the keys to the administration of his ordinances upon the earth, and left with one who was one of his original Apostels.
Now let’s get back to what the real issue is here…..politics….not religion. You Christian “Religionists” alienate otherwise good people, that have conservative values, but don’t want to deal with your strident dogma. Wake up, separate religion from politics and get something done.

Folks who say the Mormons dont believe in Christ dont know what they are talking about. We believe Christ died on the cross for our sins. We do not worship the cross because we believe the biggest gift of Christ was the resurrection so that all may be resurrected on judgement day. Forgiveness of our sins without the chance of resurrection would be pointless. The Mormon church is set up as Christ set up his church. What other church on earth has a prophet and 12 apostles. Jesus and the Apostles did not take payment for their services. What other church on earth has serving members who do not accept payment for their service. They all have jobs and support themselves. No one in the church receives retirement or has a home and utilites paid for them by church members. Our church leaders don’t have million dollar homes built by church money. God gave all his instructions to prophets in the bible and God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. So why would he not have prophets today. Do you think God has nothing to tell us anymore. Do you suppose that man is so smart that we dont need communications with our God anymore. And this different Jesus Christ I hear all these folks saying the Mormons believe in. We believe in the Jesus Christ of the bible as our savior and redeemer. The Jesus born of the Virging Mary. Those who call us a cult are those who are afraid of us and of the truths that we believe. Who feel that if they call us a cult it will scare others from the truth. Call us what you may. It will not lead me from my belief in God and my willingness to help my fellow brother. If your hungry, I’ll feed you. If your naked, I’ll clothe you. God gave us the right to choose what we do with our lives and it is those choices that will decide what happens to us on judgement day. Choose wisely my friends. God bless you all.

There is and only will be one Jesus Christ.

Mormonisn, Also known as “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints”, is a Christian, Bible based faith.

The Book of Mormon is a companion to the Bible, not a replacement!

The Book of Mormon chronicles Gods word as it was given to the peoples of this continent and it in no way belittles, degrades, nor disputes the Bible or Jesus Christ.

As one of the fastest growing religions in the world, it might be prudent for all of the “Mormon Bashers” to do a little actual research.

If you are honest Christians it would be a good thing to know what you are talking about before trying to belittle a faith that is home to so many wonderful and humble followers of Jesus!

Glenn Beck may not be a saint, but he is on the right track. This country needs to renew its MORAL COMPASS.

Faith in Jesus and following his teachings is the path.

There have been, and will continue to be many great Mormon leaders in the public realm.

Who’s the real Christian? Only God knows, but it is real hard to believe a real Christian can support partial birth abortion . . . that’s striking and killing a live human being in the head during the birth process. For that reason, I am pretty sure our president is not a true Christian, or he would not support such a barbaric practice.

Beck should be talking to the thousands of Mormons who still accept polygamy as a cover to have sex with underaged females along with their deep beliefs that Black people are descendants of Cain of the Bible whom they believe God cursed with black skin as a sign of evil after killing his brother Abel. Beck’s religious rants much like those of Jim Jones of Jonestown, Guyana notoriety who took is followers on a walk to death. Beck’s picture of American History is if God desired a “White Nation” where the white man should reign in supremacy and never allow anyone of the non white race to rise in leadership over the white man. He wants death to Obama which is sick.

Yes you can look at the cross as a negative-but you can also look at it as a possitive. I wear my cross necklace to remind myself and others of the sacrifice that Jesus made for ME and all others who believe in HIM. Wearing the cross suggests that I am a believer and should act accordingly. The cross becomes a public display and I can then be held accountable. Rather puts me on the spot, dosen’t it. It’s a good thing…:D

I am a devout Christian and also a devout Mormon. To me a Mormon is a Christian in the truest sense of the word. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints it the same church that Jesus Christ established during his ministry. It has been restored back to the earth. We have the same organization that existed in Christ’s time. We have twelve apostles, we send missionaries two by two to preach the gospel, we have the authority to perform ordinances by the power of God, etc. This priesthood authority is held by the lay people of the church not by an oppressive few church leaders. I am glad that I belong to this church and am a true Christian. People persecuted the early Christians and called them a peculiar people. It is not much different today.

Anonymous, why are you “anonymous”? Are you ashamed of your anti-Mormon vitriol? Are you ashamed that you are so judgmental? so in contrast with the doctrines of Christ? Are you ashamed that you seem to get your beliefs from “Christian Bookstores”? Do you believe that Christ is the literal Son of God? Many protestants do not. Mormons do. Do you believe that Jesus literally rose from the Dead? Many protestants do not. Mormons do. Do you believe that Jesus Christ will come again to reign over the earth? Many protestants do not. Mormons do. Since you seem to get your information mostly from bookstores, you should read Stephen Robinson’s “Are Mormons Christians?” If you did, you would know that believers in the divinity and saving grace of Jesus Christ are all “Christians”. Your ignorance and hatred betrays your allegation that you are Christian. The Mormon Church has provided hundreds of millions of dollars in relief to non-Mormons around the world, including the rebuilding of other churches such as the $1 million to the Catholic Church in Salt Lake City. The membership of the Mormon Church is loaded with highly educated and accomplished individuals. Are you saying they are all deluded and only you know “the real thing”? Wake up, get on your knees and come to know the real Christ, who loves ALL men, not just those who worship a cross.

I agree totally with the following which someone posted on Aug 30.

“The basic message of the Gospel is that the blood of Jesus shed on the Cross paid for the sins of who-so-ever calls upon him and makes him their Lord and Savior. Leaving this major fact out is heresy!”

How can anyone equate ‘Muslims’ with Christians? Baptist, Catholic, etc. Folks, look at the message they are spreading…

Good job, Tom.. I agree with you.. such dumb comments some people are making, and not dealing with God and his Son, Jesus Christ personally and accepting Him as Lord and Saviour. I can’t imagine trying to make it through ONE day without Christ.

For all of you, religion is only another word for politics. The bible is religions constitution. God is the spiritual link in man of a consciousness which may unite us, in a common good, but has not…ever. Each religion has it’s own demagogue depending on where you live. The belief that any one of them is better than the other proves mans lack of belief in a common good. Religion bashing is the same as any other creation of man, in error, at fault, imperfect and to the detriment of man. Here is a simple example of the ineptness of man to care about his own in the furtherment of his own greed… high school football…
31 deaths reported since 1995..9.237 heat illnesses (nationwide) from 2005-2009. This is what adults do to children in the name of “the game”. I believe that is neglect in legal terms. Knowing that harm will come as the result of a certain activity. Manipulating the minds of children to perform certain acts that are known to cause injury and death in the name of a game which is not really a game but in fact an industry created to promote gambling.
There are many, many more examples. This one seems to me to be the most ludacris use of “a pre game prayer, in Jesus’ name”.
Humans must control something. It is inborn to us. And in that process, if you cannot be controlled, you die. Politics and religion are the tools used for this and both are really only other words for economic oppression. Your minutes are counted from the day you are born and as you grow older those minutes are used to project the wealth of politicians and religious leaders. And, they are wealthy. Why would a man put himself through the hell of being laid open in a political campaign? It certainly is NOT for God and country or the pitance pay he will receive “serving” the people. And why do religious leaders get their 10%? Money cannot save ANY soul, but in fact further corrupts it.
Spirituality is all yours. It is YOUR belief in God, if you do BELIEVE in God.

Mormons Are First Century Christians

Glenn Beck’s theology is based on First Century Christianity, not Fourth Century Creeds. For example, the Church of Jesus Christ (LDS) views on Baptism, Lay Ministry, the Trinity, Theosis, Grace vs. Works, the Divinity of Jesus Christ comport more closely with Early Christianity than any other denomination. And Mormons’ teenagers have been judged to “top the charts” in Christian Characteristics by a UNC-Chapel Hill study. Read about it here:

http://MormonsAreChristian.blogspot.com

Those who would denigrate Glenn Beck’s religion, usually have an ulterior motive. 11 of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were non-Trinitarian Christians. Those who insist on a narrow definition of Christianity are doing our Republic an injustice.

First Century, I would agree with a lot of that. But don’t you think Beck deserves similar criticism for criticizing Obama’s brand of Christianity?
