Who’s the real Christian? Beck? Obama? You? Me?

Glenn Beck attacks Barack Obama’s religious beliefs, claiming “it’s a perversion of the gospel of Jesus Christ as most Christians know it.”

But in turn, at least some in the Christian evangelical community say similar things about Beck.

“Glenn Beck promotes a false gospel,” says Christianinvestigator.com. “However, many of his political ideas can help America. Our country was founded on Judeo-Christian values. Mormonism is not a Christian denomination but a cult of Christianity.”

Reports CNN:

Brannon Howse, a conservative writer and founder of Worldview Weekend, which organizes Christian conferences, criticized evangelical participation in that event in a column this week.

“The Apostle Paul warns Christians against uniting with unbelievers in spiritual endeavors,” Howse wrote. “While I applaud and agree with many of Glenn Beck’s conservative and constitutional views, that does not give me or any other Bible-believing Christian justification to compromise Biblical truth by spiritually joining Beck.”

Much of the criticism – along with confusion about the propriety of evangelicals politically linking arms with Mormons – is less formal and more rooted among in-the-pews churchgoers than evangelical elites.

“Jesus Christ’s Church has universally rejected Mormonism’s Anti-Trinitarian theology and its claim that mortals may become God,” David Shedlock, a contributor to the evangelical blog Caffeinated Thoughts, wrote in a post this month. “Beck asks Christian leaders to ‘put differences aside,’ but Beck himself daily peppers his broadcasts with Mormon distinctives because he cannot keep his beliefs to himself.”

Sad stuff, for politics, for religion, for Chrisitianity.

But that’s what happens once you inject religion into politics. Debates about the right government policy degrade into debates over who is more Christian than the other, or whether they’re Christian at all. It’s remarkable how many times we have to relearn that lesson.

If you were in court the minute an Attorney inserts subject it is open for discussion by the opposing side! Glen Beck started all of this. It is fair to now talk about it. He should have kept his big fake mouth closed as to who was and was not a Christian, seeing as how Mormons and Christians have two different gospels and tenets of faith!

“As a country we’ve dummied down standards. We’ve reduced them due to political pressure and, we’ve actually been lying to children and parents telling them they’re ready when they’re not,” Duncan said on Sunday during ABC’s “This Week”.

Arne goes on to say that teachers’ unions aren’t to blame. My question is….what other kind of political pressure is there?

For those of you who think the Trinitarian concept came 300 years after Christ. All that happened at that point was that the early church fathers rejected the false doctrine of those who did not believe in the Trinity and the Diety of Christ :

Reading your post is like going to the Democratic National Committee to learn what Republicans believe.

“Mormons do not believe in the same Jesus or God.”

Lots of Mainstream Christians (MCs) do not believe in the same Jesus or God as other MCs (think attributes, characteristics, or emphasis).

“You will never see a Cross over their Church or inside of it.”

I read a book by a Mormon on this. Said they view the cross as originating as an instrument of torture and death. Their emphasis is on atonement (Gethsemane thru resurrection) and they emphasize a concept, not a symbol.

“You will find the Mormon Religion under the title cult or different Religions in any Christian bookstore.”

And as Michener noted in that Chesapeake book I just read, a few hundred years ago most mainstream books referred to Negroes as lazy, indolent, etc etc. Prejudices are still prejudices even when held by the majority.

The rest of your numbered points are nonsense. I won’t say lies because you’re probably ignorant.

If you have the ability, you may want to read thru this. It’s not from one of their officials, it was written by one guy giving a lecture. But it’s probably the most thought-provoking all encompassing one I’ve ever read on the topic. It’s called “The Fallacy of Fundamentalist Assumptions.”

I’m afraid Glen Beck is and always has been an arch-conservative. And since it’s the tendency of those who love wealth by far the most (as he demonstrates so handily) to skew their religion to support their greed, I say take what he says with a very small grain of salt.

And since Jesus told us to love God first and each other as if they’re us, and that it’s impossible to serve two masters – God AND mammon (wealth) – then the safest approach for any of us who want to believe is to choose our own course and who we believe in carefully.

Beck will always reveal his true religious identity through his politics and these have little to do with the complete Christianity taught by Jesus. Remember what Jesus told the young rich man who came to him wanting eternal life?

“Go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven,” he said, “and come and follow me.” And “your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.“

Now what, young rich Glen? Do you really believe you can get that fat a$$ through the eye of a tiny needle? Somehow I think you believe you can, and won’t that be a rude awakening, speaking of awakenings!

You need to go through the N.T. and read what “the Paul” said about those who reject the Diety of Christ. It had already started back then and it was rejected as “fase doctrine”. Christ was not a created being from the Father. He was One with the Father.

John 1

“1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Many “groups” including the one we are talking about reject the full Diety of Christ and believe that He was a “created” being. That is false doctrine.

It is 3:00 PM and the postings so far are an unbelievable reflection of 21st century christianity.

There is a reason there are over 33,000 protestant denominations on the planet. The reason is over 33,000 different “interpretations” of the christian bible.

And there are over a thousand “protestant versions” of the christian bible available. It is about to the point where one can find a bible or denomination that teaches about anything one wants to hear.

There are over 700 million protestants scattered among the 33,000 plus protestant denominations. That is an average of about 21 million per denomination. The largest US protestant denomination is the Southern Baptist Convention churches of about 16 million.

There are protestant minister that say Mormons are christians and protestant ministers that say Mormons are not christian.

I have an idea, probably a silly idea, but here goes. Why don’t you let Jesus decide who is a christian?

26But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.

27So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

28He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

29But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.

30Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

“The basic message of the Gospel is that the blood of Jesus shed on the Cross paid for the sins of who-so-ever calls upon him and makes him their Lord and Savior. Leaving this major fact out is heresy!”

So, you’ve finally told us an element of what real Christians believe?

That Christians believe in human sacrifice. That the God-but-not-Jesus-God requires torture and blood. That God-but-not-Jesus-God committed suicide to appease himself.

Got it.

Now, what happens to us when we die? Do we get the George Carlin god who calls himself Father (why “Father” anyhow? Why not “Mother” ?) but tortures us forever if we don’t do what he wants? And where did that doctrine come from, anyhow? And does this mean the 99.99 percent of people who died without hearing about Jesus, even without going through that ‘speak and accept’ ritual, get to be the torturees for eternity?

First off, this thread has been amazingly civil. Congratulations…

I am not myself a Christian and would not therefore presuppose to define who is and who is not a “Christian” or for that matter who is and who is not a “Jew.” Ask a Lubovitcher and a Reconstructionist is not a “real Jew.” Ask Abie Shapiro and he’ll tell you Rachel Leibowitz is not a “good Jew” because she doesn’t keep kosher. Ask John Smith and they’re all Jews. I think much the same can be said for Christians.

When foreigners come here and are so taken by the plethora of brands and that so many Americans are deeply religious and highly sectarian, they often have trouble understanding that this is, itself, the beauty of our freedom of religion. We don’t really have to worry too much about a religious take over for the simple reason there would be way too many contenders.

Those who get their BVD’s in a wad over religion in politics need only look at this particular thread. It will never get too far because those promoting it will fall apart when it comes to who’s going to be the creed of choice…i.e. who are the “real Christians.” And that, IMHO, is a good thing.

Can’t… stop…. laughing….

I suppose the point is, it’s really, really, really easy to ridicule another’s beliefs. Correctly stated or not. I think people who do are of the same cut as those who resort to the namecalling thing – it makes them feel superior and feel ‘good’ because they’ve exposed ‘evil’ and ’saved’ others.

I think it’s kinda sad -

Paul,

Yeah, and for folks like me who think being gay and all is a borned thing, and if God sent you to hell just cause you was like all gay and stuff, then that just doesn’t make any sense to me because that would imply that God had done gone and messed up with making you gay and all, which ya’ know, God can’t do, cause he/she can’t mess up. Ya’ know?

That is exactly why so many will not admit to one teensy tiny little bit that being gay or straight is anything other than a choice. Wait… I mean, being gay’s a choice. Straight people were born that way…. wait… to be consistent, didn’t they have to choose to be straight? I mean, if God is fair and all….

I find it disgusting the Left finds fault with the Beck rally. If political, it was in the mind of the observer, not the program.

Beck is political on his radio and TV programs, but this is a man who fulfilled the promise the rally would not be political. Instead, he begged 500,000 people live, and untold numbers on C-Span, to pray on their knees, in front of their children. The Left finds fault in that? I’m not surprised. It seems anything to do with God is only used by the Left when it supports other purposes, like supporting the Ground Zero mosque.

Naw, the real story is that Jay knows that Beck resonates with something big in this country. It doesn’t have so much to do with Beck himself but what has created the Glenn Beck phenomenon. Beck is just a side effect of the unrest that is building in this country. In the big scheme of things, he is nothing but just another opinion, but the fact that his message resonates so well with a very large number of Americans points to something very important. That something is that when confronted with the reality of what progressives/liberals want to do, Americans do not like it. Obama and his “Chicago 3″ (Rham, Axlerod and Jarrett) have made a laughing stock of the American presidency. Pelosi and Reid had already destroyed the credibility of the two houses of congress. Politically speaking ,the alignment and control of the three branches by the progressive/liberals was truly the “Storm of the Century” and we are all going to suffer from it. OF course, so will they. But that wrong will be righted shortly.

Now that Obama has saved our economy and everyone who wants a job has one… and a good one at that, and you can’t even find a house to buy ’cause all the ones that were for sale are now sold, it’s a mighty fine time to argue who is Christian and who isn’t.

If you include Obama in with those three you can have your own Four Men of the Apocalypse (Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Rove) like we used to have back in the day…..sigh…..that was fun.

If you want to see how religious Beck’s followers’ are then read their comments on this site http://wp.me/pNmlT-mI which is critical of Beck and his rally. They are completely blind to facts presented to them if they are contrary to their beliefs. And many respects, their views towards others or the country don’t sound very christian. It is scary to see the hold he has over them despite him offering so little substance or truth.

Now I am getting somewhere. I split the post in two pieces and submitted them. The first paragraph went down in flames. The second one made it. It must have to do with black churches and Jesse, Sharpton and MLK, all of whom were (and are) very good at mixing politics and religion. And the liberals sit and say nothing. No, the problems arise for people like Jay when conservatives dare to mix the two. Therefore, they can be construed as hypocrits. No, they are hypocrits!

D.C. WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!!

WASHINGTON — Government anti-poverty programs that have grown to meet the needs of recession victims now serve a record one in six Americans and are continuing to expand.
More than 50 million Americans are on Medicaid, the federal-state program aimed principally at the poor, a survey of state data by USA TODAY shows. That’s up at least 17% since the recession began in December 2007.
