Experts worry the controversy surrounding an Islamic center near ground zero in Lower Manhattan is playing right into the hands of radical extremists.
The supercharged debate over the proposed center has attracted the attention of a quiet, underground audience — young Muslims who drift in and out of jihadi chat rooms and frequent radical Islamic sites on the Web. It has become the No. 1 topic of discussion in recent days and proof positive, according to some of the posted messages, that America is indeed at war with Islam.
“This, unfortunately, is playing right into their hands,” said Evan F. Kohlmann, who tracks these kinds of websites and chat rooms for Flashpoint Global partners, a New York-based security firm. “Extremists are encouraging all this, with glee.
“It is their sense that by doing this that Americans are going to alienate American Muslims to the point where even relatively moderate Muslims are going to be pushed into joining extremist movements like al-Qaida. They couldn’t be happier.”

I’m not sure if blueberries grow well in GA,
I think they grow well just about everywhere. I know they do well in S. Georgia and mine are doing fine in E. Tennessee. I know they do well in Michigan and I had some nice ones from Fla earlier this year.

“Go over to Afghanistan as an infantry soldier. You’ll catch on”
So, do I have this right: all of our soldiers in Afghanistan are hell-bent on killing every Muslim they encounter, because ALL Muslims are out to “get” them? You must feel really sorry for the poor, deluded soldiers over there who are working hard to HELP those “murderous” Muslims.

Some of my Revolutionary ancestors were living in the Jersey/PA/Delaware are during that little dust up, before they found their way further south. Whether we were there, Scotland, Ireland, Virginia, or further South, I reckon we’ve been trouble, about everywhere we went.
Seriously, I’ve never really had any trouble, in my travels, anywhere. Pretty much all you have to do is treat the people you meet with respect. They’ll usually give it back to you.

Scout, hang in there. The Progressives obviously turn to name calling and attempts to belittle the opposition when they have no legitimate rebuttal. It’s in their playbook, sorta like the race card when anyone in the equation is black. They attempt to excuse the backward and superstitious Muslim beliefs by separating in their minds the American Muslims from the rest in the world. They think a Muslim stoning a woman to death today would magically turn to a good guy just because he immigrates to America tomorrow. The progressives soo envy Europe, they should turn to their European brothers for opinions on Muslims. I’m with you, assimilate if you want to live in America. Now, they can call me a bigot also.

Indeed those extremists are fomenting hate and widening the divisions in our society. Those left wing extremists Jay Bookman, Cynthia Tucker, the Head of Hamas, Nazzi Pelosi, and Imam Hussein Øbungle are spewing their hate and disinformation. This is not about the right to purchase property but about the propriety of gloating over murder. The KKK has a perfect right to buy land next to The King Center and erect a shrine to James Earl Ray. The admirers of Ted Bundy have a perfect legal right to purchase land next to Florida State and display autopsy pictures of the women he dismembered. No one is questioning the legal right of the Fuzzy, Wuzzy, Muzzies to buy property next to the WTC and gloat over the jihadists slaughter of 3,000 innocent Americans. The question is the judgment of allowing this intention insult and affront to the feelings of Americans. But you can’t reason with a liberal anymore than you can teach cats to dance Swan Lake..

I’ll be an honest person and admit I don’t know enough about Islam to really judge it. Most people don’t or have had experience with it in a limited way. I’m not sure how I feel about it, but I see a real problem with the way we’re making it into today’s boogey-man issue. Scout and I discussed it at some length over the weekend over on CT’s blog, and it worries me how this issue is stirring up fear and foolishness in us. Human history is rife with examples of what happens when the fundamentalists or extremists get in the driver’s seat. The ultimate outcome is that they take the car screaming down the road for a while, and do okay until they hit the curves. Humans don’t like totalitarianism long-term. And the larger it grows, the harder it is to maintain the tight fundamental vision. To people in general, it seems great for a while to have stability and control and peace offered by the extremists, but it never lasts. Every country that fundamental Islam has control in is either plunging into civil war or on the edge of it. Their fight right now is to keep the image of control propped up, and it isn’t working. That’s why, even with my reservations, I just don’t fear them as much as some here do. And I can’t let fear take root like that in my consciousness. Read, learn, and remain open to knowledge- that’s all we should do, and be willing to adjust our ideas as we learn. Fear is hard to let go of, and the longer we let it guide our thoughts, the harder it is to see anything else. I’m willing to admit I’m studying and trying to give all the facts time to sink in and not be emotional in my judgments. That ain’t easy…
We have to be very, very careful how we politicize this issue and how it ripples out through the uninformed masses. My one very real fear is that this issue, this fear, this hatred will take a firm hold in American consciousness and will bear some ugly fruit. We won’t just control them “dang ragheads.” It won’t stop there. Then the same sort of fear-based justification will lead to all sorts of ridiculous attacks on everything a community sees as aberrant. I don’t think we’re considering the long term ramifications of how this can affect us. And in the end, how will that be any better? We’ll end up being just as cruel, extreme, and inexcusable as we’re accusing them of being.
I’m out for the evening. I look forward to watching this rant unfold tomorrow evening and to what polarizing issue will be next.

Scout–What I think you are failing to appreciate is that we all have a role to play in this world. Your job was providing security. My job (and DF’s) is to help sick people get well. Josef’s job is to educate our children. Jay’s job is to stir up the you-know-what on the blog.
And as important as your job was, it’s not the only one that needs doing. Military societies have been tried, and all have failed because there’s more to life than that. I believe that’s why you don’t have more takers in your quest to get everyone else on board here to fear/hate Muslims. While you’re arresting them, DF and I are helping them feel better, joseph is teaching them, and Jay’s stirring their political pots.

Which is my perspective as well, RF. We have to keep faith in the human spirit. The truth is that most of the world is corrupt and honest people barely stand a chance in most societies. We just have to keep moving forward here in the USA and lead by example. Which is why I’m tremendously disappointed in my fellow conservatives for suggesting we trash our Constitution simply because other societies aren’t as free as we are. To me, the best way to stick a thumb in their eyes is to do the opposite.

I was tremendously impressed with a VH1 interview of George in which he played a song for everyone at the host’s request. Later, the host revealed that the guitar was actually an extremely cheap guitar that his girlfriend owned and accidentally left in the studio. Rather than protest and refuse to play, George quietly tuned the cheap thing up and made some beautiful music with it. A true professional.

The 30% speak again. So, according to NPR (liberal leanings notwithstanding), and Jay Bookman, who endorses this report, only Republican or Conservative extremists are “boosting” Islamic extremists. Then by your logic, one would assume, 70% of the populace is now republican or conservative since they oppose, not the religion, but the wisdom of building a mosque in the shadow of Ground Zero. How refreshing. Because if it was just about religion the multitude of mosques in NYC proper (which I heard numbered 100, more or less) would have received the same disdain and attention. Correct me if I’m wrong, but haven’t a few dems disagreed also. It’s not about freedom of religion no matter how many times you say it. It’s about respect, understanding and the realization that just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. The opponents of the mosque’s location have always stated such. Yet you continue to disregard it just because Obama suppports it. Or does he. Seems to always be changing his mind. I know you see it too.

Aahhh, how quickly you change your story when they are laughing in your face-
Petroleum-eating bacteria – which had dined for eons on oil seeping naturally through the sea floor – proliferated in the cloud of oil that drifted underwater for months after the April 20 accident. They not only outcompeted fellow microbes, they each ramped up their own internal metabolic machinery to digest the oil as efficiently as possible. -Urinal
Invisible microbes eating invisible oil, yay!

mornin’.
I see that most peaceful Republicans continue refusing to refudiate their own extremists (even though I asked them nicely and said “pls”), and that nobody seems willing to call the community center what the developers have chosen to call it.

In a typical example of government shutting the barn door after the horse has left — actually a few years after it’s left in this case — even the FHA is raising its lending standards, although calling requiring a 3.5% down payment a “standard” would be laugh-out-loud funny if those sorts of Barney Frank- and Chris Dodd- mandated levels hadn’t cost the rest of us our jobs, our home values, and our retirement savings.
The good news is, there is hardly any economy left for them to trash!

speaking of Salon…. see this?
http://www.salon.com/technology/how_the_world_works/2010/08/16/worst_american_of_all_time_jimmy_carter
So Jimmy Carter is the WORST AMERICAN EVER???
Not “prez”…but American… well behind “true” Americans like Charles Manson, Al Capone, Nixon, etc…
Here’s the list (btw…Obama is the SECOND worst American ever)…
I’d like to see their “best American’s” list…Rush, Sarah, Beck, Hannity, you know…all of those who served their country just like Carter did…
Here’s the full list:

Hate baggers in full effect ya’ll…
I don’t know how made it through that horrible two weeks… you’ve settled in nicely though, none the worse for wear and back to your hate and obstructionism.
Here’s a novel thought. Why don’t you and yours (you know, Real AMericans) actually propose something new that will help the country?
We know all about what you hate baggers are against, ad nauseum… Why don’t you open up and let us know a little about what you’re FOR???

I said:
Osama wins everytime you let hate or fear excuse your words or actions
in regards to Islam and all muslims.
You said:
No one I’ve seen here is accusing “all muslims” of horrific acts.
Note:
You are right. I didn’t either. My words remain true.
Perhaps you think fear and hate are winning ways?
