While I’m no fan of Ron Paul’s politics, I confess I do admire the man’s willingness to speak truth to power, even on the many occasions when his version of the truth directly contradicts my own.
On the proposed Manhattan mosque, he doesn’t disappoint:
Is the controversy over building a mosque near Ground Zero a grand distraction or a grand opportunity? Or is it, once again, grandiose demagoguery?
It has been said, “Nero fiddled while Rome burned.” Are we not overly preoccupied with this controversy, now being used in various ways by grandstanding politicians? It looks to me like the politicians are “fiddling while the economy burns.”
The debate should have provided the conservative defenders of property rights with a perfect example of how the right to own property also protects the 1st Amendment rights of assembly and religion by supporting the building of the mosque.
Instead, we hear lip service given to the property rights position while demanding that the need to be “sensitive” requires an all-out assault on the building of a mosque, several blocks from “ground zero.”
Just think of what might (not) have happened if the whole issue had been ignored and the national debate stuck with war, peace, and prosperity. There certainly would have been a lot less emotionalism on both sides. The fact that so much attention has been given the mosque debate raises the question of just why and driven by whom?
In my opinion it has come from the neo-conservatives who demand continual war in the Middle East and Central Asia and are compelled to constantly justify it.
They never miss a chance to use hatred toward Muslims to rally support for the ill conceived preventative wars. A select quote from soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq expressing concern over the mosque is pure propaganda and an affront to their bravery and sacrifice.
The claim that we are in the Middle East to protect our liberties is misleading. To continue this charade, millions of Muslims are indicted and we are obligated to rescue them from their religious and political leaders. And we’re supposed to believe that abusing our liberties here at home and pursuing unconstitutional wars overseas will solve our problems.
The nineteen suicide bombers didn’t come from Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan or Iran. Fifteen came from our ally Saudi Arabia, a country that harbors strong American resentment, yet we invade and occupy Iraq where no al Qaeda existed prior to 9/11.
Many fellow conservatives say they understand the property rights and 1st Amendment issues and don’t want a legal ban on building the mosque. They just want everybody to be “sensitive” and force, through public pressure, cancellation of the mosque construction.
This sentiment seems to confirm that Islam itself is to be made the issue, and radical religious Islamic views were the only reasons for 9/11. If it became known that 9/11 resulted in part from a desire to retaliate against what many Muslims saw as American aggression and occupation, the need to demonize Islam would be difficult if not impossible.
There is no doubt that a small portion of radical, angry Islamists do want to kill us but the question remains, what exactly motivates this hatred?
If Islam is further discredited by making the building of the mosque the issue, then the false justification for our wars in the Middle East will continue to be acceptable.
The justification to ban the mosque is no more rational than banning a soccer field in the same place because all the suicide bombers loved to play soccer.
Conservatives are once again, unfortunately, failing to defend private property rights, a policy we claim to cherish. In addition conservatives missed a chance to challenge the hypocrisy of the left which now claims they defend property rights of Muslims, yet rarely if ever, the property rights of American private businesses.
Defending the controversial use of property should be no more difficult than defending the 1st Amendment principle of defending controversial speech. But many conservatives and liberals do not want to diminish the hatred for Islam, the driving emotion that keeps us in the wars in the Middle East and Central Asia.
It is repeatedly said that 64% of the people, after listening to the political demagogues, don’t want the mosque to be built. What would we do if 75% of the people insist that no more Catholic churches be built in New York City? The point being is that majorities can become oppressors of minority rights as well as individual dictators. Statistics of support (are) irrelevant when it comes to the purpose of government in a free society — protecting liberty.
The outcry over the building of the mosque, near ground zero, implies that Islam alone was responsible for the 9/11 attacks. According to those who are condemning the building of the mosque, the nineteen suicide terrorists on 9/11 spoke for all Muslims. This is like blaming all Christians for the wars of aggression and occupation because some Christians supported the neo-conservative’s aggressive wars.
The House Speaker is now treading on a slippery slope by demanding a congressional investigation to find out just who is funding the mosque — a bold rejection of property rights, 1st Amendment rights, and the Rule of Law — in order to look tough against Islam.
This is all about hate and Islamaphobia.
We now have an epidemic of “sunshine patriots” on both the right and the left who are all for freedom, as long as there’s no controversy and nobody is offended.
Political demagoguery rules when truth and liberty are ignored.

And, josef, let’s not forget that it’s an election year! Politics has once again become a blood sport in an even year.
I remember listening to Robert Reich speak at a conference I attended some years ago, and he liked to discuss the origin of the word “politics”. He said it was a combination word derived from the Greek word “poli”, meaning “many” and “tics” which are small blood sucking insects.

I can foresee unintended consequences to federally funded stem cell research.
Black markets…violation of medical ethics…a whole slew of endless possibilities. On the other hand…
——————————————————————————————————————-
That makes no sense whatsoever! By definition, a black market is ILLEGAL so restricting federally funded research does NOTHING to prevent that, unless of course you think researchers are more likely to sell the embryos they are doing research on than fertility clinics are to sell the excess embryo’s they are disposing. As for violation of medical ethics, what exactly do you have mind? And how are they more likely to violate these ethics than the fertility clinics? And why couldn’t those potential violations simply be outlawed? Well that’s 2 of the “endless possibilities” how about putting a few more out there. As for your link, well, duh. If you can’t do research on embryonic stem cells doesn’t it kind of follow that adult stem cell research would move ahead??? Bottom line, if you’re going to make embryos that will eventually be destroyed there is no morally defensible argument as to why they couldn’t be used for good.

With the Payroll side consistently running a surplus, and the Income tax side of the government consistently running a deficit, it not so much a case of the government borrowing from itself, as the income tax side borrowing from the payroll tax side. In other words, the poor are being forced to lend to the rich through the tax system.
I’ll bet that some people think that tax cuts actually trickle down when in fact, they flow uphill. It is something entirely different that trickles down.

I really don’t understand. I am a neo conservative and I don’t hate. I support the rights involved here. I also understand that so few Americans on either side of the political spectrum truly understand the constitutionality or underlying basis of any major issue like this. It’s all about the emotion. I think “light weight” conservatives and independents are still offended by the 9-11 bombings and the fact that the bombers did it in the name of Islam and Allah. When the “non-violent” Muslims fail to condemn the issue or stand with America against the extremism, it shouldn’t be a surprise when mainstreet America fails to support this cause.

According to Stratfor, Turkey’s secularists are in trouble.
Here’s an interesting fellow (imam) who’s based in Pennsylvania and dedicated to their downfall. He’s described by our government and media as a moderate Muslim.
Fethullah Gülen’s Grand Ambition
Turkey’s Islamist Danger
In the sermons, he said:
You must move in the arteries of the system without anyone noticing your existence until you reach all the power centers … until the conditions are ripe, they [the followers] must continue like this. If they do something prematurely, the world will crush our heads, and Muslims will suffer everywhere, like in the tragedies in Algeria, like in 1982 [in] Syria … like in the yearly disasters and tragedies in Egypt. The time is not yet right. You must wait for the time when you are complete and conditions are ripe, until we can shoulder the entire world and carry it … You must wait until such time as you have gotten all the state power, until you have brought to your side all the power of the constitutional institutions in Turkey … Until that time, any step taken would be too early—like breaking an egg without waiting the full forty days for it to hatch. It would be like killing the chick inside. The work to be done is [in] confronting the world. Now, I have expressed my feelings and thoughts to you all—in confidence … trusting your loyalty and secrecy. I know that when you leave here—[just] as you discard your empty juice boxes, you must discard the thoughts and the feelings that I expressed here.
He continued,
When everything was closed and all doors were locked, our houses of isik [light] assumed a mission greater than that of older times. In the past, some of the duties of these houses were carried out by madrasas [Islamic schools], some by schools, some by tekkes [Islamist lodges] … These isik homes had to be the schools, had to be madrasas, [had to be] tekkes all at the same time. The permission did not come from the state, or the state’s laws, or the people who govern us. The permission was given by God … who wanted His name learned and talked about, studied, and discussed in those houses, as it used to be in the mosques.
In another sermon, Gülen said,
Now it is a painful spring that we live in. A nation is being born again. A nation of millions [is] being born—one that will live for long centuries, God willing … It is being born with its own culture, its own civilization. If giving birth to one person is so painful, the birth of millions cannot be pain-free. Naturally we will suffer pain. It won’t be easy for a nation that has accepted atheism, has accepted materialism, a nation accustomed to running away from itself, to come back riding on its horse. It will not be easy, but it is worth all our suffering and the sacrifices.
And, in yet another sermon, he declared,
The philosophy of our service is that we open a house somewhere and, with the patience of a spider, we lay our web to wait for people to get caught in the web; and we teach those who do. We don’t lay the web to eat or consume them but to show them the way to their resurrection, to blow life into their dead bodies and souls, to give them a life.
[snip]
So long as U.S. and Western officials fail to recognize that Gülen’s rhetoric of tolerance is only skin-deep, they may be setting the stage for a dialogue, albeit not of religious tolerance, but rather to find an answer to the question, “Who lost Turkey?”

How about creating embryos for the sole purpose of stem cell research. If there’s a buck to be made, somebody…somewhere is gonna figure out how to make that buck.
—————————————————————————-
You missed my point completely. IF there was a black market for embryos, who do you think would be more likely to sell embryos, a fertility clinic employee whose choice would be to sell the embryo or discard it, or a scientist who needs the embryo for their research. You also don’t seem to understand that this ruling only affects FEDERALLY FUNDED research. There is nothing preventing private researchers from doing the research RIGHT NOW.
As for spikes in insurance premiums????? First, the stem cell research is generally for chronic problems. So, while the initial payment may be higher than existing treatment, in the long run it would likely be lower. Take dialysis for example. It costs about $44,000 per year. A transplant costs about $35,000 as a one time expense. Even if creating a new kidney from stem cells cost $200,000, you’d still be financially ahead in about 6 years! Or Parkinson’s disease. If you could restore function of the striato-nigral tract in the brain through stem cells you could prevent years of expensive medicines, doctor visits, possible disability payments, hospital admissions for complications etc. Spinal cord injuries? Again you could save years of disability payments and medical care. And if you’re worried about the costs of these newer treatments, how does that differ from ANY new medical treatment? Your argument makes no sense and is quite lacking in the compassion area.
As for the credit card argument, I have no idea what you are talking about. Apparently you don’t either.

It really does not matter what we all think….we are NOT the victims here. The leader of this center should, out of respect, not build if that is what even ONE victims’ family member wants. paleo-neo-Carlinist: I’ve been challenging the anti-Muslim crowd to do just that. However, that would require honesty, courage and clarity of thought, three qualities I find lacking in that bunch. Many conservatives have (rightly) pointed out one of Obama’s biggest downfalls, The Law Of Unintended Consequences. Yet somehow, they don’t see the three fingers pointing back at themselves when they protest the building of the Muslim center.

“do you know only Muslims are aloud to live in Mecca?”
And what does that have to do with doing the right thing? According to your line of thinking, we should find the most repressive regime on earth and model ourselves after them. That’ll really show them!!

It must be your bedtime. With such a hedious religion you SHOULD get it, but dropping out of school, obviously was your wrong choice. I geuss you just don’t get it. The muslims that want that mosque built there should first take care of their own prejudices. Such a loving religion, NOT!

For the morning crew, here are some Scarlet Begonias to start the day with:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQSeWLuU8hw&feature=related
Song lyrics specially for the effervescent USinUK:
As I was walking round Grosvenor Square
Not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air
From the other direction she was calling my eye
It could be an illusion, but I might as well try
Might as well try
She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes
And I knew without asking she was into the blues
She wore scarlet begonias, tucked into her curls
I knew right away she was not like other girls
Other girls
In the thick of the evening when the dealing got rough
She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff
As I picked up my matches and was closing the door
I had one of those flashes I had been there before
Been there before
Well I ain’t often right but I’ve never been wrong
It seldom turns out the way it does in the song
Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right
Well there ain’t nothing wrong with the way she moves
Scarlet begonias or a touch of the blues
And there’s nothing wrong with the look that’s in her eyes
I had to learn the hard way to let her pass by
Let her pass by
The wind in the willows playing Tea for Two
The sky was yellow and the sun was blue
Strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand
Everybody is playing in the heart of gold band
Heart of gold band
Two strawmen fighting it out

Isn’t the claim that opposition to the mosque is “all about hate and Islamaphobia” a negative stereotype of a group based on the comments of a minority of its members? Is that just as bad as claiming all Muslims are terrorists because some are?

Well on its face I would say no, because what we’re accusing the Park51 opponents of doing is based on a specific issue where they’ve taken a specific stand.
However it’s worth noting that Jay’s headline is somewhat misleading. Ron Paul doesn’t actually quite say that all Park51 opposition is all about hate and Islamaphobia. The sentence one about calls to investigate the cultural center’s backers.
Given the context, I believe Ron Paul is correct.

oops, let me fix that…
It’s worth noting that Jay’s headline is somewhat misleading. Ron Paul doesn’t actually quite say that all Park51 opposition is all about hate and Islamaphobia. The sentence follows one about calls to investigate the cultural center’s backers. Specifically, this:
The House Speaker is now treading on a slippery slope by demanding a congressional investigation to find out just who is funding the mosque — a bold rejection of property rights, 1st Amendment rights, and the Rule of Law — in order to look tough against Islam.

ISLAM IS NOT A RELIGION!
IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS, MILITANT AND BARBARIC CULT, WHOSE CORE PRINCIPLES ARE IN DIRECT CONFLICT WITH THE PRINCIPLES OF THE UNITED STATES. MOSQUES ARE MILITARY CENTERS AND SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED ANYWHERE.
ISLAM DOES NOT ALLOW FOR:
-FREEDOM OF SPEECH
-FREEDOM OF RELIGION
-IMPOSES CRUEL & UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT (HOMOSEXUALS ARE TO BE KILLED, FORNICATORS WHIPPED, THIEVES TO HAVE HAND CHOPPED OFF)
-THERE IS NO SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE UNDER ISLAM
PEDOPHILIA IS ACCEPTABLE UNDER ISLAM, BECAUSE THAT IS THE EXAMPLE THAT MUHAMMAD PROVIDED, WHO MARRIED A 7 YEAR OLD GIRL AND CONSUMMATED THE MARRIAGE! COMPARE THAT TO THE EXAMPLE THAT JESUS PROVIDED – SINLESS!
TO READ MORE ON WHAT ISLAM TEACHES, GOOGLE: TOP TEN REASONS WHY SHARIA IS BAD FOR ALL SOCIETIES
GOOGLE: PAMPHLETS FOUND IN AMERICAN MOSQUES
THE IMAM AT THIS MOSQUE WANTS TO IMPLEMENT SHARIA/ISLAMIC LAW HERE IN THE U.S. DOES THIS SOUND “FRIENDLY” TO YOU?
THE NAME OF THE MOSQUE IS GOING TO BE CALLED “CORDOBA HOUSE,” WHICH IS THE NAME OF A TOWN IN SPAIN WHERE MUSLIMS ATTACKED IT, DESTROYED IT, DESTROYED A CHURCH THERE AND BUILT A MOSQUE ON TOP OF IT! DOES THIS SOUND “FRIENDLY” TO YOU?!
MOSQUEs AT GROUND ZERO ARE UNDOUBTEDLY POLITICAL AND MILITARY CENTERS FOR ISLAM! PERIOD.
Well, when all the liberal homosexuals and women find themselves governed under Sharia Law maybe they will understand Islam is really not a friendly religion! And when their daughters are slain because of Honor Killings under Sharia Law they will realize Islam is not a friendly religion! Islam is not your friend! It is an aniquated religion that is years behind the time that treats women worse than and animal with no rights and they are haters of the Western world!

Grand morning all. Found my wallet, but only after I has cancelled all of my credit cards. For the time being, it’s back to the old fashioned way…Go to the Bank and write a check for “cash” to get money. Oh the good old days
It seems to be typical of the Neo Cons to use emotion as they do. They have no answers for any of the valid problems we have, so to try to get elected they shout “BOOGIE MAN”. I truly hope that the populous wakes up and see’s them for what they are before November. It’s time to slap their widdle butts…

Yes, my monitor was there too…and all my money (six bucks and change).
I use a fanny pack like an over the shoulder bag to carry my personal stuff in. I have decorated the strap with memorabilia pins which made them think the bag wasn’t mine. I have a Breast Cancer pin on it and they couldn’t believe a man would display one. I have it for my sister, of course. Anyway, all is good…
