While I’m no fan of Ron Paul’s politics, I confess I do admire the man’s willingness to speak truth to power, even on the many occasions when his version of the truth directly contradicts my own.
On the proposed Manhattan mosque, he doesn’t disappoint:
Is the controversy over building a mosque near Ground Zero a grand distraction or a grand opportunity? Or is it, once again, grandiose demagoguery?
It has been said, “Nero fiddled while Rome burned.” Are we not overly preoccupied with this controversy, now being used in various ways by grandstanding politicians? It looks to me like the politicians are “fiddling while the economy burns.”
The debate should have provided the conservative defenders of property rights with a perfect example of how the right to own property also protects the 1st Amendment rights of assembly and religion by supporting the building of the mosque.
Instead, we hear lip service given to the property rights position while demanding that the need to be “sensitive” requires an all-out assault on the building of a mosque, several blocks from “ground zero.”
Just think of what might (not) have happened if the whole issue had been ignored and the national debate stuck with war, peace, and prosperity. There certainly would have been a lot less emotionalism on both sides. The fact that so much attention has been given the mosque debate raises the question of just why and driven by whom?
In my opinion it has come from the neo-conservatives who demand continual war in the Middle East and Central Asia and are compelled to constantly justify it.
They never miss a chance to use hatred toward Muslims to rally support for the ill conceived preventative wars. A select quote from soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq expressing concern over the mosque is pure propaganda and an affront to their bravery and sacrifice.
The claim that we are in the Middle East to protect our liberties is misleading. To continue this charade, millions of Muslims are indicted and we are obligated to rescue them from their religious and political leaders. And we’re supposed to believe that abusing our liberties here at home and pursuing unconstitutional wars overseas will solve our problems.
The nineteen suicide bombers didn’t come from Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan or Iran. Fifteen came from our ally Saudi Arabia, a country that harbors strong American resentment, yet we invade and occupy Iraq where no al Qaeda existed prior to 9/11.
Many fellow conservatives say they understand the property rights and 1st Amendment issues and don’t want a legal ban on building the mosque. They just want everybody to be “sensitive” and force, through public pressure, cancellation of the mosque construction.
This sentiment seems to confirm that Islam itself is to be made the issue, and radical religious Islamic views were the only reasons for 9/11. If it became known that 9/11 resulted in part from a desire to retaliate against what many Muslims saw as American aggression and occupation, the need to demonize Islam would be difficult if not impossible.
There is no doubt that a small portion of radical, angry Islamists do want to kill us but the question remains, what exactly motivates this hatred?
If Islam is further discredited by making the building of the mosque the issue, then the false justification for our wars in the Middle East will continue to be acceptable.
The justification to ban the mosque is no more rational than banning a soccer field in the same place because all the suicide bombers loved to play soccer.
Conservatives are once again, unfortunately, failing to defend private property rights, a policy we claim to cherish. In addition conservatives missed a chance to challenge the hypocrisy of the left which now claims they defend property rights of Muslims, yet rarely if ever, the property rights of American private businesses.
Defending the controversial use of property should be no more difficult than defending the 1st Amendment principle of defending controversial speech. But many conservatives and liberals do not want to diminish the hatred for Islam, the driving emotion that keeps us in the wars in the Middle East and Central Asia.
It is repeatedly said that 64% of the people, after listening to the political demagogues, don’t want the mosque to be built. What would we do if 75% of the people insist that no more Catholic churches be built in New York City? The point being is that majorities can become oppressors of minority rights as well as individual dictators. Statistics of support (are) irrelevant when it comes to the purpose of government in a free society — protecting liberty.
The outcry over the building of the mosque, near ground zero, implies that Islam alone was responsible for the 9/11 attacks. According to those who are condemning the building of the mosque, the nineteen suicide terrorists on 9/11 spoke for all Muslims. This is like blaming all Christians for the wars of aggression and occupation because some Christians supported the neo-conservative’s aggressive wars.
The House Speaker is now treading on a slippery slope by demanding a congressional investigation to find out just who is funding the mosque — a bold rejection of property rights, 1st Amendment rights, and the Rule of Law — in order to look tough against Islam.
This is all about hate and Islamaphobia.
We now have an epidemic of “sunshine patriots” on both the right and the left who are all for freedom, as long as there’s no controversy and nobody is offended.
Political demagoguery rules when truth and liberty are ignored.

How about a synagogue or church at the saddam statue site?”
barking frog–Maybe you’re being “tongue-in-cheek” (a sticky tongue at that), but the argument that we have to demand “quid pro quo” treatment from our enemies before we agree to do the right thing is morally bankrupt.
——————————-
moral bankruptcy would be without morals and we would therefore not do
the right thing, but the right thing , not the legal thing, would be to not build
the church or synagogue.

Unfortunately, once you learns about Libertarian ideals, if you agree with their ideas once, you are probably in agreement with them all the time. Libertarians are all about this simple rule: “live and let live.” Ie, government keeps out of your business unless you physically or financially (through fraud) harm someone else.

Scout,
I would agree with you if Islam was “just” a religion. It is not.
Would you say that Christianity is “just” a religion? Just curious. And to answer your question downstairs, no it does not upset me, and yes I agree that we do — to a large extent — have different roles. As an American, though, I must add, “as we so choose” because I was born here and indoctrinated into the ideas of freedom and self-determination, things that freedom-loving men frequently attempt to deny women. My point is, God made me a woman, but you can’t make me “act like one.” If I do, it’s because I choose to.

“The anti-Mosque issue, not limited to lower Manhattan, is not about sensitivity; it’s about exploiting peoples differences for political gain—again.”
I would add that this is about fanning people’s willful igonorance and fear as well. How else can you explain that so many people believe that President Obama is Muslim? And so what if HE WAS or IS????? What is the point?
Most Americans are so stupid. And every politician knows it. That’s why they turn into big ‘ol PANDER bears just before elections.
I was in Dubai this year and visited the Burj Khalifa. It’s the world’s tallest building and is absolutely breath-taking in it’s beauty. Excavation started Jan 2004. The grand opening was Jan 2010. Where is our 9/11 Memorial? Why do we still have a hole in the ground where the Twin Towers once stood? Answer: Because we’re too easily distracted by the shiny objects offered by sources like Faux News.

Manhattan is not that big. Almost anywhere on the island can be declared “hallowed ground” because it is near the WTC site. If the WTC site is so hallowed why has nothing been built in 9 years? I think we need to follow the money on this issue and find out who is funding all this “anti mosque- islamic cultural center”? The money trail always reveals the real reason for such demonstrations. There has been a mosque since 1970 within the shadows of the WTC – not one problem. And FYI= Islam is one of the 3 great religions of the world and has been for centuries. Terrorism is not a religion but an extremist group who happen to espouse a religion. I guess you say that about people who are Christian who bomb abortion clinics. And there has been a mosque inside the Pentagon since 9/11. No this is all about divide the “little people” so that those behind the scenes with money and power can keep their status quo and make the “little people” feel like they have a say in something.

Scout…if Christianity is “just” a religion…but Islam is not…feel free to explain a place like Liberty University..and their law school…and how they “train” their little Christian Soldiers who attend there to get active in politics and change or challenge all laws that don’t subscribe to their theocratic society wishes?
Yes Scout…there are “some” Christians here in the USA who wish nothing more then for this to be a society where you would not even ALLOW Muslims to exist.
Why are those same Christians taught to get SO involved with politics? I mean…it’s “just” a religion…right?

Six questions for those that oppose the Park51 mosque, by FDL.
1. Since the proposed site for the Park51 worship space is 2 blocks away from Ground Zero, why do you keep calling it the “Ground Zero Mosque”?
2. What precisely is an acceptable distance from the former site of the World Trade Center for Muslims to practice their religion? (Terms like “so close” or “in the shadow of” or “steps away” are obviously subjective.)
3. Is there a difference between violent Islamic extremists and mainstream Muslims?
4. If your answer to #3 is “yes,” why is there an objection to Muslims practicing their religion in Lower Manhattan?
5. Since Muslims have been holding religious services at Park51 for over a year, should they be stopped?
6. As Park51 is private property, are you in favor of the government regulating how the space is utilized?

Love your logic Keep Up and Janet, as long as Christians have ever done anything wrong, then its carte blanche for the bombs of Islam. Christian rule in the dark ages allowed for an eye for an eye judicial system, or rather looked the other way, no pun intended. Most Islamic countries still practice that today, including our good oil buddies Saudi Arabia, where still on their hot topic list is whether to surgically paralyze a man who caused the paralysis of his victim. Great religion indeed.

In my worthless opinion, other than John McCain, Ron Paul was the ONLY man among the GOP’s 10 candidates for POTUS in 2008 that was more than just a foolish Bush clone.
And it sure was rewarding that those were the last two standing. And what should have been an enormous eye opener for the neo-cons is now all but forgotten as they bellyache that they got destroyed in back to backers because they weren’t conservative enough! (Great game plan neo-cons.)
As much as there are aspects that I agree with and admire about Dr. Paul, he is the nonetheless susceptible to the disease of Washington Republicanism.
For example, unlike virtually every other Republican he acknowledges that the sovereignty of We the People has been hijacked.
BUT, alas, he identifies the wrong culprits. Instead of fingering the banksters, casino capitalists and plutocrats in this country, he blames the UN in his American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2009.
So he too shows very little moral courage vis a vis standing up to the corporate destroyers of capitalism.

As a strict Constitutionalist, I’m a fan of Dr.Paul. IMO, he’s “Founding Father material”. I don’t really have an heavy opinion of the “Ground Zero” mosque as there are far too many holes with the “official” 9/11 story (*see “Loose Change”, WTC7, Thermate traces, etc.). We do (however) need to take a stand against mass (3rd world) immigration (illegal & “legal”…H-1B visa workers swiping American jobs). However, it’s doubtful the bastion of traitors on “Capitol hill” (save for rare patriots like Dr.Paul) will do anything outside the agenda set by their Globalist Elite ma$ters.

I’m grateful that no one I knew or loved was murdered in the Twin Towers debacle. Radical musilms planned, executed, and rejoiced over this killing. Musilms around the world hit the streets in celebration when the second tower came tumbling down. I know. I was in Europe when 9/11 happened and witnessed the jubalation first hand. From what I understand, the vast majority of the families of 9/11 victims don’t want this Islamic facility built. Should their wishes be ignored? Should we as a nation tell them to just “get over it!” Yes, as Americans we have the right to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and all the other freedoms that have been held up as reasons to humiliate these families even more. But as for me, I strongly believe that no one has the right to be stupid by offending those families who have suffered more than enough. Ron Paul, Jay Bookman, President Obama, Muslims of all varities, and anybody else who feels that they can justify the building of this center on American rights have missed the point entirely. This issue is not about rights! It’s about respect. Grow up! Every schoo child on the playground knows this.

Not saying I disagree, but Ron Paul uses a god-awful metaphor. If the 9/11 mass murderers had done what they did in the name of soccer, than yeah, I wouldn’t want a soccer field built by ground zero. But they didn’t, they instead did it in the name of Islam. Other Muslims may not want the association, but those aren’t the ones I’m trying to avoid appeasing. I can’t help but think they are all cheering in whatever afterlife they may have that a mosque is being built by the site of their triumph.

Liberal and conservative alike are completely missing the point and allowing their sheets to show all around with their charges. The foray into calling it the Burlington Coat Factory mosque–Cynthia’s words there, too–or the Ground Zero mosque…this is the Cordoba Center…a mosque is only a part of what is at work here, but left and right alike have focused on the mosque end of it. And that is Islamaphobia and both sides are playing it for all its worth. Meanwhile our Muslim fellow countrymen have to wonder just who their friends among their fellow Americans are.

Jay, I know I am preaching to the converted, but ALL politics (even the liberal side) is rooted in “…hate and fill-in-the-blank-phobia.” fear of climate change, poverty, and bigotry are also threats to the Republic when some politico trots out a solution to these very complex problems. I do find the neo-con habit of ignoring Paul and projecting his very libertarian position toward “liberals” and “lefties” to be amusing. very much an “emperor’s new clothes” moment. my only beef with Paul is his “loyalty” to the two-party ruse. perhaps he feels he can do more good as an ombudsman, vis a vis a GOP ex-pat. he is proabably more paleo-conservative than libertarian; but either way, I guess he figures he’d rather return the GOP to a paleo-con party, as opposed to the finger-in-the-air rebranding that seems to infect the neo-cons. either way, it makes for good copy.
Keep up the good fight!

They’re both a hatchback configuration, which I really like.
Audi’s style has grown on me quite a bit until now it’s one of my favorite lines.
Ford’s coming on strong – I did a doubletake in Dublin – thought I’d spotted a new Bentley from the rear quarter, and it was a Ford!

Hey “Dawgs” Although your non-acadmeically reviewed websites and biased google searches I’m sure pull up some amazingly accurate and truthful information. How about if you want to learn something about Islam you try reading a book. Here’s a start: The Koran. See: “Bo god, but God” and “What Went Wrong.” Educate yourself instead of looking like a fool and perpetuating nonsense, hate-filled rhetoric.
I can google “10 Reason why Jesus was a prick” and find everything I need for a string of hatred on another prophet.
As for for Mr. Paul, my homeboy,………… RON PAUL 2012!!!!!

I’ve been gone for most of the day, but this Community Center thing has gone way past the pale. Would all of you Mosque haters feel better if, along with the swimming pool, theater, and bowling ally, they add a synagogue and a Chapel?
Did you fall asleep in school when we learned about freedom of worship?
Have you ever looked at how many Muslims were killed in the Towers? Over 300. More than 10% of the total killed.
The men who flew the planes into the Towers were not Muslims…they were pathetic killers. thugs, who had nothing to do with the Islam faith or the Koran.
“If anyone harms (others), God will harm him, and if anyone shows hostility to others, God will show hostility to him.” Sunan of Abu-Dawood, Hadith 1625.
“Those who believe (in the Quran), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians…and (all) who believe in God and the last day and work righteousness, shall have their reward with their Lord; on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” The Qur’an, 2:62
This is how a true follower of Islam is supposed to believe, so quit your mindless hating and start studying your supposed “enemy”.

Thank you for making my point. I’m sure the FBI spent some time on that group. The point is that the FBI probably spends about 95+% of their time in those types of cases on Muslim groups in an attempt to weed out terrorists there.
However, most of that is probably classified and we will never know for sure.

Are the folks who say this is about respect and sensitivity, not legal rights or the Constitution, the same one who opposed Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court because she would supposedly not follow the rule of law and would not be an objective, impartial arbiter of disputes because she allows political philosophy to overtake the Constitution?

“but left and right alike have focused on the mosque end of it.”
Because that is how it is being “marketed” by the haters…but if writers like Jay want to use it as a reference, I think it would be surrounded by quotation marks…to take it out of the realm of reality, and make it clear that it IS a quote.

Non-chickenhawk birds of a feather, flock together:
Washington (CNN) – Rep. Joe Sestak, the Pennsylvania Democratic Senate nominee, is picking up an endorsement from an unlikely source: a former Republican senator from the state of Nebraska.
Chuck Hagel, a former two-term Republican senator, will announce his endorsement of Sestak on Tuesday, Sestak spokesman Jonathon Dworkin confirmed to CNN.

RW said, Two weeks of vacation just to come back and recycle the very same topics? Oh well, if it was all about hate and Islamaphobia then the question wouldn’t be about the location of the mosque it would be about the very existence of a mosque.
Think of it this way….let’s roll back the clock to, say, around 1961. You’re black and want to get a seat on the bus. The white bus driver tells you, “I know you want to sit up front, but you got to be sensitive to white folks feelings. Look. You can sit anyplace else on the bus, just not up front, OK?”

Sharia and civil law is an interesting one…until 1839 women living in jurisdictions operating under British law were not allowed to own and dispose of property under their own names and separate of a man. (Thank you Mississippi and the Chickasaw nation for that repeal). Jewish women were allowed to under Jewish law. There was a conflict there. The tacit agreement was that Jewish law in matters of civil law would be respected until such time as the case might reach the English law courts at which time English law would prevail. Thus a Jewish woman’s control of her property was fine as long as the matter was kept within the community.

Scout…when you post ignorant diatribe…I’ll be glad to point it out. But hey, you do realize that calling someone ignorant is not name calling. I would use stupid to name call. Ignorant assumes you are not informed or educated but that you have the ability to learn. Sadly, I fear you will never use that grey matter to think and learn. Therefore you are doomed to remain ignorant. And I will exercise my right daily to call you ignorant when you post racist and hate slurs and comments.

Scout,
Welcome back. How I’ve missed you.
Let’s be honest now, huh? The proposed building will be more than a mosque; it will be a community center. And it will not be on the so called sacred ground of Ground Zero. Hey, there is even a striptease show about a block up the street. And there are guys handing out fliers for that little bit of adult fun. Not a problem, I suspect.
