Time to hang out the “Gone fishin’ sign once again

Last week, we were talking about having a soul-themed edition of Travelin’ Music, and I still think that’s a great idea. But not tonight. When we all step aboard the Soul Train, I want to be here. And tonight, I’m not.

In fact, as I mentioned in comments earlier, I’m not going to be around for the next two weeks. And unlike my recent cross-country “vacation,” this time I’m not bringing you with me. As Rick said to Ilsa, “Where I’m going, you can’t follow. What I’ve got to do, you can’t be any part of.” I’m headed out to the high desert of Oregon again for a couple of weeks of whitewater rafting, fishing and camping, and among that region’s many charms is the fact that cell phones and computers are utterly useless out there.

So for tonight, I’ll leave you with this, a piece that serves as the official theme song for the group of guys who have made this same trip annually for almost 20 years now. In fact, somebody at work asked me the other day whether I was ever going to get too old for this trip, given that we run the trip ourselves, without guides.

“Maybe someday,” I told her. “Someday when I’m dead and buried, that is.”

Be kind to each other while I’m gone.

“Again, to say to a highly educated person like OBL or his deputy “I know better than you about Islam and what it does and does not teach” strikes me as a terribly superior attitude”

but I have NOT said that. I don’t know anything about Islam. I make my judgement of their actions based on what I learned during the “re-education” of our police forces about rape. Rape is not about sex, it’s about power. Terrorism is not about religion, it is about power.

It all stems from power. People like OBL reason FROM power TO religion, not the other way around…though they might not realize it. Just as a rapist will plead his sexual drives for commiting a rape. Terrorism is about power, rape is about power.

It’s not an easy concept to grasp…if it was it wouldn’t have taken so long to re-educate the police. But once you DO grasp it, you can easily see it.

It’s not about religion. It’s about power. Or, as I like to put it: religion is the excuse, power is the reason.

“I think a lot of the House seats we’re going to lose are those who have been the toughest for the Democrats to pull into line — the Democrats that have been the most difficult,” Waxman said.

Sure hope he’s right that the ranks of the Blue Dogs will be hit hardest in November. These DINOs take the party name and vote Republican. Maybe we’ll be seeing some truth in advertising for a change. If they’re going to be Republicans, at least join the party. And please, Arkansas voters, kick Blanche Lincoln, another Blue Dog, to the curb. It’s largely thanks to her that single-payer and Medicare buy-in didn’t even make the committee floor.

I’m an unabashed conservative and most regulars know it. I do have to say that it’s indeed good to also know that the other regulars, regardless of political stripes are law abiding citizens who mean no harm to anyone.. I guess I needed to say that when everyday you read or see on the news reports about crime in this country. If you’ve been around for at least 30 years, you know that it, crime is out of control in this country. Morality has broken down and maybe it’s because we’ve turned away from our God.

Del,

There is indeed way too much crime, particularly violent crime in this country, but I am not so sure that crime has gone up in the past thirty years. I do know that New York City’s Time Square used to be a cesspool, but if you look at it today, the tourists are there again. Crime in NYC, I believe is down. I believe white collar crime is up. Now, as for the reasons, you may well be right, in my opinion, that lack of morality is a factor. However, as to “turning away from God”, I don’t think so. Can we have a good, law abiding atheist at the time having a criminal who is a Christian? I think the answer is obvious. Modern Japan is largely a nation of atheists. Yet, crime in Japan is demonstrably lower than that in the US. It is not about belief in God over there; rather it is about a sense of duty, morality and family. And the strongest anti-gun laws in the world.

I grew up in the 40’s, 50’s and early 60’s. It was a far different America then, in contrast to what it is today. I’ve been to Japan and like the people, however, their culture is and has been, since as far back as we know far different from ours, so I don’t think we can make a really fair comparison there. Guns, well I grew up with them, learned and used many in the military and own several today as a collector and as a sportsman. I don’t see guns per say as the root cause for our crime issues today. I see it as a decay in our moral culture. Crime has gone up in all category’s over the last 50 years.

When I was going for my first degree I had a psych class and the prof was explaining his policy on missing tests. He said he was a Civil War buff and that towards the end of the war and the outcome appearing more and more certain that when a soldier was wounded there were always an excess number of fellow soldiers “helping” the wounded soldier to the back of the line. At one point, one of the generals had his calvalry officers mounted at the back of the line and if a group of soldiers came to the back of the line helping a wounded soldier the officer would ask the “helpers” to “show blood” or get back to the front of the line. So, the prof said “If you miss one of my exams, you better show blood” lol

SECRETARY OF DEFENSE Robert Gates called for the elimination of the Norfolkbased Joint Forces Command on Monday as part of a broader effort to reduce certain kinds of military spending – especially a growing reliance on defense contractors. “The culture of endless money that has taken hold must be replaced by a culture of savings and restraint,” Gates said.

After the wildest, most irresponsible, totally debauched spending spree in the history of the entire world, the liberals finally find some “restraint” when it comes to National Security, of course.

“So what does Hausknecht think justices need to consider if the issue goes before the high court? “I will say that the Supreme Court, even the liberals on the court, ought to be thinking at least twice about the culture wars they will ignite — just like they did with Roe v. Wade — if they were to affirm this ruling,” he replies.”

So let me get this straight…. this so called “judicial analyst” (who happens to work for one of the most bigoted religious groups in the country: Focus on the Family) says that instead of weighing in on what our nation’s LAWS say… our SC justices should ALL become “activist judges” and instead of considering our laws and our Constitution… they should consider the “culture wars” that will take place if gay marriages are allowed.

First of all…perhaps Hausknecht here should realize that the “culture war” he speaks of…is already going on. WHO started it? The Talibangelical right that his group represents. One day when gay marriages ARE allowed nationwide (and it’s not an “if” but a “when”)… he and the rest of the bigots will see that the number of gay people remains as consistent in our society as it’s always been…no more…no less.

Just what is it about gay marriage and it being legal that makes the Talibangelicals think that if it’s legal…straight guys are going divorce their wives and marry their fishing buddy? Where does that rational even come from? Since gay marriages have been allowed in some states….perhaps they can show the “evidence” that comes from those states backing their positions… how in those states…more kids are “choosing” to be gay…and that people are leaving their marriages to BECOME gay…and that basically those states are on fire and burning right now as I type… to be honest…the longer these rights have been on the books in those states…the more and more it disproves every argument they make AGAINST gay marriage.

So I say…PLEASE give Larry Craig and his “wide stance” the right to divorce his wife and marry his fishing buddy!

One passenger stood up to retrieve belongings from the overhead compartment before the crew had given permission. Mr. Slater instructed the person to remain seated. The passenger defied him. Mr. Slater reached the passenger just as the person was pulling down the luggage, which struck Mr. Slater in the head.

Mr. Slater asked for an apology. The passenger instead cursed at him. Mr. Slater got on the plane’s public-address system and cursed out the passenger for all to hear. Then, after declaring that 20 years in the airline industry was enough, he blurted out, “It’s been great!” He activated the inflatable evacuation slide at a service exit and left the world of flight attending behind.

[...]

[A] former flight attendant, Janet Bavasso, who lives next door to Mr. Slater in Queens, found nothing mysterious at all.

“Enough is enough — good for him,” Ms. Bavasso said. “If he would have called me, I would have picked him up.”

Attendant shoulda notified the authorities so the in a hurry passenger would be detained for a long time, then sued him, then retired.

‘nuther topic, say in the paper where a number of communities are responding to citizen complaints by shutting down red light runner and speeding cameras. People say they’re unAmerican. I wonder if there are the same people who want to arrest and deport illegals because ‘they’re breaking the law.’

The people probably don’t even see the inconsistency.

2 thoughts on that … 1) where’s SoCo when you need him? and 2) I’m staying on your good side

We used to send them over to fat boy’s platoon on Parris Island.

Ah, yes. The infamous Special Strengthening Platoon, the ultimate horror for every Parris Island recruit who wanted to finish his three months of he[[ and move on to advanced infantry training at Camp Lejeune. Each strength test carried the threat of failure, in which case the recruit was sent to Special Strengthening Platoon to lift steel logs and endure other strength-building exercises with others. Upon completion of SSP, the recruit was sent back to begin boot camp all over again, regardless of how long he had previously been in boot camp.

Good, Good, Good Tuesday morning to all y’all. I hope you will all (yes, you too Whiner) have a truly wonderful day!!!

Saul,
Focus On The Family should be renamed Focus On Only One Kind Of Family.
Never have understood how the so called “Religious” of all types forget we are ALL family…Where’s the Pointer Sisters when I need ‘em… :D

Today is voting day…My last day to try to stick it to Deal. If Karen wins, it will make Sister Sarah of the Tundra insufferable, I know, but King Roy will have an easier time against her.

USinUK,
A special good morning to you I say while bowing at the hip (and vertebrae cracking)…I was looking up recipe’s for diabetics and can’t find any British one…can you help?

New York currently boasts at least 30 mosques so it’s not as if there is pressing need to find space for worshippers,” the letter added.

They have never been to New York, I bet…There is ALWAYS a need for space there.

Good Leonard Pitts column. Sad. But thought-provoking.

A requiem for Willy Brown

I was struck by the idea that boys who don’t have male role models (fathers, not just any male role model) don’t learn nuturing traits and grow up handicapped, then father kids with less than optimal results. So much for young, unmarried girls having kids, keeping the children and thinking everything will be fine because she wants a baby and that’s what counts. At least, that’s how I read Pitts’s writing.

Then again, maybe guys like Lee Willie DeJesus are just plain stupid.

Paul – I read it as you don’t need ANY man around to father your child, you need a good’un. Lee Willie DeJesus isn’t one of those.

the only positive to come out of it – scum like that get their comeuppance in prison as they are the bottom of food chain …
