Last week, we were talking about having a soul-themed edition of Travelin’ Music, and I still think that’s a great idea. But not tonight. When we all step aboard the Soul Train, I want to be here. And tonight, I’m not.
In fact, as I mentioned in comments earlier, I’m not going to be around for the next two weeks. And unlike my recent cross-country “vacation,” this time I’m not bringing you with me. As Rick said to Ilsa, “Where I’m going, you can’t follow. What I’ve got to do, you can’t be any part of.” I’m headed out to the high desert of Oregon again for a couple of weeks of whitewater rafting, fishing and camping, and among that region’s many charms is the fact that cell phones and computers are utterly useless out there.
So for tonight, I’ll leave you with this, a piece that serves as the official theme song for the group of guys who have made this same trip annually for almost 20 years now. In fact, somebody at work asked me the other day whether I was ever going to get too old for this trip, given that we run the trip ourselves, without guides.
“Maybe someday,” I told her. “Someday when I’m dead and buried, that is.”
Be kind to each other while I’m gone.

Saul Good- Taken directly from your own propaganda:
One of the town’s Muslim imams wounded in the attack told Human Rights Watch that a Christian pastor tried to stop the attack but was beaten by the armed mob.
The three Muslim leaders were there; the three pastors were there; the chiefs of the Berom and Hausa were there. We then went home. After 15-20 minutes we saw people dropping [entering the town] from the mountains. They were Berom – the tribe of the governor. They were armed with cutlasses, guns, sticks, and bags of stones. It was not the Christians from our community but those from outside who came.
Why do you lie?

Critics of unconditional aid are routinely caricatured as heartless or cruel. Ask why government is favoring one class of occupations over others, and you will be called anti-teacher or anti-cop or anti-fire fighter. Government spending, you will be told, is the best form of economic stimulus—even though the trillions that already have been spent have brought nothing but doldrums. The message from Washington is that the status quo must be perpetuated. The message is that the zombies must not be allowed to die.
Our kid’s educational level ranks somewhere between Zimbabwe and Pakistan and the Teacher’s Union gets more money.
Where do you think the priorities lie, more votes for our rulers or our children’s future?

Saul knows nothing but what his progressive masters have told him, Report. All those that love the progressive movement should read a little bit. May I suggest the “Forgotten Man” or “Lenin, Stalin and Hitler, the Age of Social Catastrophe”. Progressive/Socialist experiments have ALWAYS ended up with the “common man”, (which the progressives movement is supposed to be designed to help)living in misery and pain. And, their ideology can end with huge amounts of human blood being spilled (as it did with Lenin and Stalin). It is a movement built upon supposed ideological and intellectual superiority by those that think these things endow them to know what is best for the “common man”. The same mistakes made years ago by the socialist/progressives are being made today now that they are in power. The chilling thing is, our present circumstance is very close to that of the Great Depression and we have a government that is comprised of people that think the same way Roosevelt and the Progressives thought. Any person who has read any American history knows now that Hoover’s and Roosevelt’s progressive ideology only made the misery of the great depression worse. Only WW II and its directed and massive production by private enterprise brought the country out of what would have been pretty much our economic end. Yes we have two wars now but our production nowadays is outsourced and the effects are not the same and a large portion of the money is spent outside of our borders. Both parties are responsible for these wars and our outsourcing of American jobs. But, we do have progressive fools currently controlling the government that still believe that they know what is best for all us and that is that government control and government spending, even though we are way beyond “broke” and are now can best described as “economically pathetic”. We are at the mercy of foreign leaders and that isnt’t where we should be.

If the Progressive thinkers in our government had control prior to the debacle brought about by the Bush Depression, we would not be in this position. You do realize the workers of the USA are the most productive in the world? Given that thought, if jobs had not been outsourced and a loss of 8 million mainly manufacturing jobs, the middle class would have pushed the economy through the Bush-era errors.

Religious freedom shall not be limited except when a government can prove a “compelling interest” to do so.
What compels the Taliban to restrict an individual’s religious freedom? What compels the federal government to restrict an individual’s religious freedom? Especially when it is the church who’s saving a government program money by not requiring payment for its facilities.
It really wasn’t a big deal for our church members. Like I said, we considered it our civic duty as well as our Christian duty. I dare say that many of the girls were of the Christian faith, but still….

Are you so desperate that you need to take the money we give to the less fortunate, from the less fortunate? That’s what would happen if we were taxed. Less money, less outreach.
Our minister pays taxes. He’s not ordained, works part-time, receives no benefits, owns his own home. He has a full-time job that requires he pay taxes. Because he does own his own home, we pay taxes on our parsonage as it’s a source of income at present.
I’m pretty sure we pay property taxes on a piece of undeveloped land adjacent to the church. We’re not using it for church functions so it’s not exempt.
Our music director, gone now, paid taxes on her piddlin’ little paycheck. She, too, had a full-time job outside the church. All working members of the congregation pay taxes.
We also pay taxes on goods and services. We could haul around our tax number when making purchases, but it’s not always convenient. Even when we do, not all businesses will honor our tax exempt status.
No big deal. What…..do you need a loan? We have a benevolent fund…no strings attached.

While YOUR church may be one that runs a tight budget and does what it can to help those in need… I can say that MANY do not. He’s going with some of the other “riches” in his “posse” to Alaska soon. They make that trip every year… oh…it’s a “MISSION” to help those silly Native’s who live there find jeezbus (whom they already know)… yet the REAL mission (as per the newsletter that comes to my mailbox from them every year)…is the great HUNTING and FISHING they get to do while there. Should that person’s mega church pay taxes? Yes…it should.
Loan? ME? No…thanks for the offer…my wife and I have no outstanding debt. Never have and never will. Not on our home, not on our cars, not on anything we purchase…We live within our means. Yet I wasn’t asking for one…I was simply saying that the religious institutions in this nation take in Billions upon Billions of dollars each and every year…most of it tax free…they pay no property taxes, no income taxes to many on their payroll don’t have to be paid, and they even get a pass on paying sales tax when they buy that 100″ flat screen for the pastor’s office. @@,
Here’s a perfect example where a religious institution had it tax exempt status taken away:
http://www.oyez.org/cases/1980-1989/1982/1982_81_3/
”
Facts of the Case:
Bob Jones University was dedicated to “fundamentalist Christian beliefs” which included prohibitions against interracial dating and marriage. Such behavior would lead to expulsion. In 1970, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) changed its formal policy to adopt a district court decision that prohibited the IRS from giving tax-exempt status to private schools engaging in racial discrimination. The IRS believed that the University’s policies amounted to racism and revoked its tax-exempt status. The University claimed that the IRS had abridged its religious liberty. This case was decided together with Goldsboro Christian Schools Inc. v. United States, in which Goldsboro maintained a racially discriminatory admissions policy based upon its interpretation of the Bible, accepting for the most part only Caucasian students. The IRS determined that Goldsboro was not an exempt organization and hence was required to pay federal social security and unemployment taxes. After paying a portion of such taxes for certain years, Goldsboro filed a refund suit claiming that the denial of its tax-exempt status violated the U.S. Constitution.
Question:
Can the government prohibit race discrimination at the expense of the First Amendment’s Free Exercise Clauses?
Conclusion:
The Court found that the IRS was correct in its decision to revoke the tax-exempt status of Bob Jones University and the Goldsboro Christian School. These institutions did not meet the requirement by providing “beneficial and stabilizing influences in community life” to be supported by taxpayers with a special tax status. The schools could not meet this requirement due to their discriminatory policies. The Court declared that racial discrimination in education violated a “fundamental national public policy.” The government may justify a limitation on religious liberties by showing it is necessary to accomplish an “overriding governmental interest.” Prohibiting racial discrimination was such a governmental interest. Hence, the Court found that “not all burdens on religion are unconstitutional.”
Bob Jones U tried to use their institution as a RELIGIOUS one in order to avoid paying taxes…
A bit more on churches and taxes:
“America’s tax laws are designed to favor non-profit and charitable institutions which presumably benefit the community. The buildings of private schools and universities, for example, are exempt from property taxes. Donations to charities like the Red Cross are tax deductible. Organizations which engage in medical or scientific research can take advantage of favorable tax laws. Environmental groups can raise tax-free funds by selling books.
Churches, however, tend to benefit the most from the various tax exemptions available, in particular because they qualify for many of them automatically, whereas non-religious groups have to go through a more complicated application and approval process. Non-religious groups also have to be more accountable for where their money goes, while churches, in order to avoid possibly excessive entanglements between church and state, do not have to submit financial disclosure statements. ”
The non profit Animal Rescue my wife and I sit on the Board of Directors for has more stringent regulations compared to a religious institution. Our group takes in a bout $50K a year in donations (and spends considerably more on vet care, etc…)… Yet a church or temple can take in millions per year and never have to disclose just HOW and for WHAT they used those funds. Fair? Depends upon who’s running the show and how much GOOD they do with those funds… I can tell you that the pastor down my street does little in the name of “helping”…well unless that includes he and his family.

Dusty,
We want the Phillies to lose, every game, every day and I’m much more a fan of the islands between Beaufort and Charleston than I am of Myrtle Beach. I love the Outer Banks though once you cross into North Carolina so maybe I’m a Myrtle Beach snob.

Oh yeah, this is comforting-
A two-year study by a group of academics on American Muslims and terrorism concluded that contemporary mosques are actually a deterrent to the spread of militant Islam and terrorism. The study was conducted by professors with Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy and the University of North Carolina.-Urinal

With a spiritual leader like Reichsmarshall Limbaugh, it’s hardly a wonder so many righties have become such obnoxious, racist jerks….
Other than the obvious racism and stupidity from that statement, let us take std apart farther than he has done for himself:
1. the obvious racists are blacks, with their overwhelming continued support for Obozo, despite him having delivered NOTHING of value, unless you count taxes as ‘value’;
2. black support continues to remain high for Obozo, as polls nationwide show his general levels of support for his policies and actions so far plummeting, below even that of their hated psycho-target, GWB;
3. and why is this you ask, are they more ignorant or blind than most of the rest of America….not really, they are simply locked into skin color, victimization, social justice, blah, blah, blah, and not using their brains as opposed to their hearts, or just simple out and out pure racism, take your pick – neither one is very pretty, is it?
4. take a look at Congress, Rangel and Waters….think std or his crowd will renounce them and trample on them as quickly as Obozo and his stooges did that poor black woman from Georgia?
Racism as displayed by the likes of std show the lack of awareness and ignorance of its perpetrator, but thankfully he is too stupid to realize it and continues to show his racist streaks to us all.
Maybe that is why you are still such an “obnoxious, racist jerks..”

So why don’t you explain exactly how “our government’s thought’s on religion sound very much like the taliban’s”
NO PROSELYTIZING!
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
@@,
You’re being elusive enough to qualify for political office. Again, you said “our government’s thought’s on religion sound very much like the taliban’s”
You couldn’t be more wrong! Our government’s rules on “proselytizing” apply only to to groups while they are involved in functions/activities that are associated with the government. The thought process behind that is the separation of church and state. It applies to all religions. Whether you agree with separation or not, that is the thought process behind the rules. With the taliban the “church”/ mosque IS the state. The rules on proselytizing apply to every religion other than islam to protect the state religion, islam. The thought processes of the US government and the taliban are diametrically opposed.

Well, I do beleive the Rev. Postlewaite cut loose with the most boringest sermon I ever heard this a.m. There was elbows flying everywhere while the women tried to keep their men awake. To tell the truth, I don’t recall alot of it—something about treating your brother the way you would want him to treat you. Only I don’t have a brother, so I kind of tuned out right there. It all made me wish the Rev. Jim Bob Buice hadn’t of been caught buck-nekkid in the bushes with that young boy. The Rev. Jim Bob, he knew how to rile people up. Even to the point that old Connie Singletree would get up and start shouting and speaking in tongues.
Anyhow, I was reading this a.m. about how the people that use to work for this Handel woman down at the capital are speaking up about how nasty she was to work for. They’re saying she was nastier than a boar hog in a mud puddle. I don’t know which would be a better sight down at the guvner’s mansion, a woman with constant PMS or a crook that will steal us blind while we’re looking. I reckon old King Roy is setting back grinning and getting ready to settle scores down there, knowing about half the Republican voters will vote for him no matter who wins the primary.
Have a good Sabbath everybody. And don’t worry, you’ll be able to buy booze tomorrow.
