Last week, we were talking about having a soul-themed edition of Travelin’ Music, and I still think that’s a great idea. But not tonight. When we all step aboard the Soul Train, I want to be here. And tonight, I’m not.
In fact, as I mentioned in comments earlier, I’m not going to be around for the next two weeks. And unlike my recent cross-country “vacation,” this time I’m not bringing you with me. As Rick said to Ilsa, “Where I’m going, you can’t follow. What I’ve got to do, you can’t be any part of.” I’m headed out to the high desert of Oregon again for a couple of weeks of whitewater rafting, fishing and camping, and among that region’s many charms is the fact that cell phones and computers are utterly useless out there.
So for tonight, I’ll leave you with this, a piece that serves as the official theme song for the group of guys who have made this same trip annually for almost 20 years now. In fact, somebody at work asked me the other day whether I was ever going to get too old for this trip, given that we run the trip ourselves, without guides.
“Maybe someday,” I told her. “Someday when I’m dead and buried, that is.”
Be kind to each other while I’m gone.

The exact same thing happened to me when leaving israel in 1986. I was with a group and had to get back to the states early. On my passport picture I had a beard but shaved it off in israel. That and the fact I was travelling alone got me interrogated and strip searched along with three arab guys. In my opinion, the israeli security has adopted gestapo tactics in treating people – the irony. I had a marshall sit next to me all the way to rome and I looked as american as apple pie at the time. Eye opener..

With a spiritual leader like Reichsmarshall Limbaugh, it’s hardly a wonder so many righties have become such obnoxious, racist jerks.
http://mediamatters.org/blog/201008060038
If you thought Rush Limbaugh would simply be content to just echo his fellow conservatives in a misguided and counterfactual attack on Michelle Obama by comparing her to and calling her “Marie Antoinette” you would be very wrong. Today, he added to that smear the racially charged rhetoric that he’s employed for years.
As he referred to her as “Michelle ‘Antoinette’ Obama,” Limbaugh also claimed that the allegedly insensitive actions of the Obama family were taking place because they “look at it as if they are owed” these luxuries because of past racial discrimination. He added that they are “flying all over the country while everyone else is tightening their belts, ’cause they deserve it. This is owed to them.”
At this point it’s worth noting that press secretary Robert Gibbs explicitly said that “It’s a private trip and is being paid for that way,” but even so I don’t think anyone expects that any member of any first family should or would travel without a security detail and the standard staffing commensurate with what is, after all, the family of the American president.
But the introduction of the racial component went even further over the rails, when Limbaugh later said that “the media” feels Mrs. Obama “deserves” the trip because of America’s “slave past,” adding “It’s only fair that people of color get their taste of the wealth of America, too.” This has nothing to do with what has happened so far and is even more disconnected from reality than the initial charges of so-called elitism. It’s just the injection of the most divisive issue for no good reason.

British doctor and nine others killed in Afghanistan ambush
It is understood that the victims were lined up, robbed and shot dead with AK-47 rifles. “Yesterday (Friday) at around 8am, one of our patrols confronted a group of foreigners. They were Christian missionaries and we killed them all,” said Zabihullah Mujahed, a spokesman for the Taliban.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/afghanistan/7931862/British-doctor-and-nine-others-killed-in-Afghanistan-ambush.html
The dead were believed to be medical workers on an eye care mission from International Assistance Mission (IAM), a Christian charity specialising in health and economic development.
A statement from IAM said: “We have been informed that 10 people, both foreign and Afghan, were murdered in Badakhshan.
“It is likely that they are members of the International Assistance Mission (IAM) eye camp team.
“The team had been in Nuristan at the invitation of communities there. After having completed their medical work the team was returning to Kabul.

Indeed, but it’s to be expected when mercy mission teams like that ride around without armed escorts. Did they really think that the insurgents would respect the fact that they were unallied medical personnel? Anything or anyone with the word Christian in the name is going to be a target of Muslim extremists. If they’ll hang a 7-year-old boy, they certainly won’t hesitate to shoot adults.

There is nothing new here. The desire to destroy someone at any cost was seen in the ’90’s with Clinton as well as is mentioned in Bob Inglis’s recent interview:
The religious right has not hesitated to speak out on things they disapprove of in the past. So where are they when “false witness” is made against their political foes. Morality is not selective. You don’t get to practice it just when it’s convenient or helpful to your cause and still claim the moral high ground. Their silence makes them as guilty and the liars themselves.

Despite Democratic majorities in the House and Senate and the ease with which Obama won the presidential election over McCain-Palin, the Democratic Party has totally collapsed.
The Democrats have abandoned every constituency. Democrats have discarded the American people. Democrats, in pursuit of campaign contributions, represent the moneyed interests on Wall Street, the munitions companies, the insurance companies, the agribusinesses that have destroyed independent farmers, despoilers of the environment, unaccountable police and the builders of detention centers. The exception is Rep. Dennis Kucinich.
The Democrats have become Brownshirt Republicans.
The American people, except for the 1 percent of super-rich, have been abandoned.
This is called “trickle-up” economics. You tax the little guy and give the money to the armaments companies.

The team killed were part of the International Assistance Mission which has been working in Afghainstan for several years. Part of their protocol includes that there is no proselytizing (preaching), They are like the good Samaritan. This team went to help the sick and blind in a part of the country that had to be reached on pack animals..
I begin to wonder when some start to rationalize why these ten should not have gone to help the sick of the world. They shouldn’t go because it is dangerous? They shouldn’t go because the team was probably Christians and therefore should stay home? Does that mean we should not go to certain doctors in America because they are MUSLIM and we are not? That the primary goal of any doctor is NOT to help the sick?
We who are blessed should not be demeaning those who will even give up their lives to help the helpless sick of this world. Those who dare to give and sacrifice are the givers of this world. If we cannot go outselves, at least we can support those who dare to do so. Remember Albert Schweitzer and Mother Teresa? Were they wrong to do what they did?

Nobody’s saying that, Dusty. Too bad you never acquired reading abilities during your technical training.
It’s a deadly game over there. The battle is for the hearts and minds of the millions of villagers. The Taliban and their allies see mercy teams such as the one recently killed as countering the image they want to have the villagers form of the foreigners. It is indeed despicable to murder people who are trying to provide medical help to those who have had no access to it, and it is even more despicable to murder those people because they don’t share a religious faith with those conducting the killing.
The people who sent that team over there with no military protection may have had good intentions, but they were hopelessly naive to assume that the team’s safety would be assured by virtue of its merciful mission. I’ve seen no one on this blog attempt to justify the atrocious murders.

My reading abilities are quite in order. So is my intuition. You don’t quite undstand the team that went to the mountains of Afghanistan and were killed.
They did not want the military with them so they would not be mistaken as militants. They did not preach because their mission was to heal. They did not go as enemies of the Taliban or anybody else. They went to help anyone who needed it and there were many who did..
Of course they knew there was danger. They did not EXPECT to be killed because their sponsor had been working in Afghanstan for many years without a problem.
We can say there is no justice. Perhaps the citizens of Afghanistan my perceive even better what has beset them in the way of the Taliban. People who give their lives for the good of others are the strongest.. That applies to our military also. They all sacrifice for others.

I don’t think anyone insinuated that the killings were OK as you said. What most people don’t think about is the Taliban is more connected that what people perceive. If the IMA posts on their website that they sponsor Christian missions, is it not likely that the Taliban sees that group as a “Christian” group. They’ve already said they were looking over the Wikileaks stuff to see who were cooperating with the Americans, so that would lead one to believe they connect over the internet. As was stated earlier, it’s an “us versus them” situation over there. I would not have sent that medical team in there without protection. They may have been doing those missions for years and years, but things over there are not the same anymore. You’ve got a group that’s desperate to maintain power over the locals, and they’ve shown that they will kill their own to do that, so what would be any different or special about not killing outsiders?
I applaud any aid groups that go there to help people. I see them returning home from time to time. I just would not send anyone there without protection.

This web site may gross you out but it is worth reading–especially if you have small children! Or if you suffer from dental problems.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/01/23/nigeria.massacre.probe/index.html
“Lagos, Nigeria (CNN) — Reports of at least 150 Muslims killed in recent religious clashes in Nigeria should be investigated, a human rights group urged Saturday.
Witnesses told Human Rights Watch that armed men attacked Kuru Karama in central Nigeria on Tuesday, “killing many as they tried to flee and burning many others alive,” the international organization said Saturday.
The assailants targeted Muslims, reportedly killing at least 150, Human Rights Watch said.
Community leaders from Jos, a city about 19 miles north of Kuru Karama, and journalists told the organization that later in the week they saw dozens of bodies lodged in wells or sewage pits. The bodies of 121 people, including 22 children, had been recovered, the organization said. Most of the homes in the town were burned down, along with three mosques, the group said.”
RELIGION causes DIVISION among humans… that DIVISION “caused” by religion makes humans feel as if only THEIR cult-like beliefs are the ONLY “CORRECT” beliefs…
So sad that “GOOD” Christians did do enough to those in Africa when they took humans and made them slaves which they took to far away lands…. now they feel they that since they can’t have them as slaves any longer (slaves being something the bible condones)… they send humans there to tell them that THEIR beliefs are whacky… so they need to believe in OTHER whacky beliefs instead.
Leave them alone. Leave ALL those who are not Christians alone and let them “find” what ever beliefs they want to simply “believe” on their own… as if a “talking snake” is more believable compared to any of their own beliefs…..

Saul has a brother, who….?`
My church offered its facilities to Clayton County’s CHILDTECH program. It was made clear to all church members, that if they were on the premises (our facilities) there was to be no talk of religion in adherence to the separation clause.
Guess what? We never discussed religion when we encountered the toddlers or their teenage moms. It was more important that the program have a facility free of charge.
Come to think of it, our government’s thoughts on religion sound very much like the Taliban’s. Once a government sponsored program sets foot on OUR property, we have to keep our mouths shut. Same thing when they use it as a voting precinct. We’ve even been asked to remove all literature from the fellowship hall where the voting takes place.
No problem….it’s part of our civic outreach, not religious outreach.

According to the majority of jay’s left-wingers, anybody lacking a college education is ignorant.
Some of the smartest people I know never made it past the eighth grade. My grandmother never made it past the third, but WISDOM and STREET SMARTS? She had those…a real survivor, she.
When talking about the “dullards” your word, not mine…I was thinking of two in particular…good people, one a very hard worker…both with college degrees…one a teacher.
Maybe Normal would like to give us his definition of ignorant. I don’t even consider the kids I’ve worked with over the years as ignorant…challenged maybe, but far from ignorant.
I don’t use the word, ignorant, to define people.

Dr. Karen certainly knew what politicians were all about:
Most of the time I listen to politicians on the TV with an autistic head on, you know the kind of head where you can instantly tell when someone is lying through their teeth or is simply delivering a foil of bullsh*t, liberally peppered with terms designed to disguise that there is absolutely nothing inside the hot air that they are spouting. If you squint your eyes a little and just listen to the words, the child or the dog inside you, the bit that is innocent and can still tell the difference, will raise it’s ears and say, “That person is offering me what looks like food but when I go to eat it they will grab me by the paws and squeeze me til it hurts, best I don’t listen to them”. So I am torn but find myself switching on the TV to listen to various puffy people talking sh*t.

To say something like that, especially on a day when we learn that the taliban mercilessly executed a group of people for their religious beliefs, is repulsive and stunningly ignorant. Just admit you were wrong and move on.
