Time to hang out the “Gone fishin’ sign once again

Last week, we were talking about having a soul-themed edition of Travelin’ Music, and I still think that’s a great idea. But not tonight. When we all step aboard the Soul Train, I want to be here. And tonight, I’m not.

In fact, as I mentioned in comments earlier, I’m not going to be around for the next two weeks. And unlike my recent cross-country “vacation,” this time I’m not bringing you with me. As Rick said to Ilsa, “Where I’m going, you can’t follow. What I’ve got to do, you can’t be any part of.” I’m headed out to the high desert of Oregon again for a couple of weeks of whitewater rafting, fishing and camping, and among that region’s many charms is the fact that cell phones and computers are utterly useless out there.

So for tonight, I’ll leave you with this, a piece that serves as the official theme song for the group of guys who have made this same trip annually for almost 20 years now. In fact, somebody at work asked me the other day whether I was ever going to get too old for this trip, given that we run the trip ourselves, without guides.

“Maybe someday,” I told her. “Someday when I’m dead and buried, that is.”

Be kind to each other while I’m gone.

I too take an annual hiking trip every year with the same 3 friends. We started it in 1985. I know you’ve probably got enough great stories from your annual trips with your buddies to write a book or two. I know I do (but I suck at writing)… perhaps one day you will. :) Have a great trip!

Doggone, if I ever do… I don’t think my first would be on that topic… most likely be about the lives of the countless dogs my wife and I have saved and their stories…. as far as hiking-camping stories go… Not like it will be on par with jay’s book (which I’ll be reading next week) or Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods” (which I loaned to one of my hiking buddies about 10 years ago and which was never returned). I remember hearing that they were going to make that into a the “final movie” for Newman and Redford… sad they never got to shoot that. Would have been perfect casting for it.

Anyway…sorry I never read that in your Bio here Jay… Duh me!

“sad they never got to shoot that. Would have been perfect casting for it. ”

Not to me. I never finished reading that book. I found the author to be, in the words of Linda Ellerbee “a self absorbed jerk” The only thing good about it, in my mind, was a t-shirt I saw that said “Bill Bryson is a candyass”

Doggone…I guess it (my enjoyment of that book) depends on personal experience with regards to hiking sections of the AT. I remember years ago hiking parts up north and bringing a friend that had stuffed his pack with so many cans and so much junk that he was literally falling down every 50 yards and wanting to rest (and we were in our 20’s)… after he threatened to “bury” his cans and some other stuff he had that he didn’t need….I had to take half the stuff in his pack and then along the way whenever we encountered any other hikers along the trail he was BEGGING them to take stuff from him/us (which many gladly did)… Bryson’s friend was very much like my hiking companion on that trip. Simply NOT prepared for what it took to “hike” since he thought it was more like “camping”….Anyway… I did in fact enjoy it. Heck… I probably have very different taste in most music and movies compared to most as well.

Anyway… broadband light is flickering from the storm so it’s time to log off… stuff to take care of out in the “real world”… that one outside where the Terrorists Lurk!

Good (fill in the blank) to all…..!

Anyhow, all I want before I die is as much vacation time as Bookman gets. He’s got the dream job. He comes up with a few copied words to get people fired up, waits for people to start blasting each other, kicks one or two off of the blog, and then goes on vacation.

I have probably white water rafted on every major river, and caught my fair share of salmon, trout and sturgeon….Not to mention hitting every honky tonk I could find then most people could claim…Love that place. I have lived in Ga since 1977, and this may hurt some of you, but I’ve had enough of hicksville. I’ve sold my house, made an offer on a condo in the artsy section of Portland, and have already made reservations on Delta for my three dogs and cat. Maybe the next time Jay goes on vacation to Oregon, we’ll get together for a few microbrews. And on Sunday I’ll wander down to the grocery store and buy all the beer and wine I want.

josef, imo, as in everything in life, its being in the right place at the right time. She has to hook up with a partner who can compliment her strengths. If she is a great singer, find a great guitarist. If her power is in the guitar, find a great vocalist.

If she is great at both, find a partner who does one or the other exceptionally.

And then have lottery winning luck.

Don’t be afraid to play the small venues. Even places like Swallow at the Hallow or Fat Matts Rib Shack can get you started.

I’m sick of people throwing off on GA and I want them out of this state. Just because the people and their kids are dumb is no reason to throw off on us.
