ADL abandons its principles, surrenders its cause

The Anti-Defamation League calls itself “the nation’s premier civil rights/human relations agency,” proclaiming in its mission statement that “its ultimate purpose is to secure justice and fair treatment to all citizens alike and to put an end forever to unjust and unfair discrimination against and ridicule of any sect or body of citizens.”

A group deserving of such a description could never have put out a statement like this:

We regard freedom of religion as a cornerstone of the American democracy, and that freedom must include the right of all Americans – Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and other faiths – to build community centers and houses of worship.

We categorically reject appeals to bigotry on the basis of religion, and condemn those whose opposition to this proposed Islamic Center is a manifestation of such bigotry.

However, there are understandably strong passions and keen sensitivities surrounding the World Trade Center site. We are ever mindful of the tragedy which befell our nation there, the pain we all still feel – and especially the anguish of the families and friends of those who were killed on September 11, 2001.

The controversy which has emerged regarding the building of an Islamic Center at this location is counterproductive to the healing process. Therefore, under these unique circumstances, we believe the City of New York would be better served if an alternative location could be found.

In recommending that a different location be found for the Islamic Center, we are mindful that some legitimate questions have been raised about who is providing the funding to build it, and what connections, if any, its leaders might have with groups whose ideologies stand in contradiction to our shared values. These questions deserve a response, and we hope those backing the project will be transparent and forthcoming. But regardless of how they respond, the issue at stake is a broader one.

Proponents of the Islamic Center may have every right to build at this site, and may even have chosen the site to send a positive message about Islam. The bigotry some have expressed in attacking them is unfair, and wrong. But ultimately this is not a question of rights, but a question of what is right. In our judgment, building an Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain – unnecessarily – and that is not right.

Such a statement contradicts everything the ADL has claimed to defend, as those who drafted it know all too well. In one sentence they explain and defend their principles; in the next, they abandon those principles. They condemn bigotry, then surrender to it. It’s a deeply disappointing display of moral cowardice, a surrender to the very forces in human nature that the ADL exists to combat.

Del said Crazy time we’re living in. Hopefully, America has had enough and we’ll soon be seeing change we can really believe in.

Del,

The times they are a changing. The majority is not liking the fact that (in some states sooner than others) the erstwhile white majority will soon become the minority. That is the change that makes many of you so nervous. But that change is irrevocable. Believe in that.

Del…
Not too long ago I was doing some reading on the public sentiments during the massive immigration of the late 19th Century…it was amazing just how much like today those “debates” were, only the targets were Jews (relgion) and Italians (race) and today we see their grandchildren doing the same thing…I daresay two generations from now there’ll be some other groups and the Muslims and Latinois will be right there in the choir…

If your telling me that the white majority offends you and the change you believe in, is only to see white Americans become a minority, well, you just called yourself a racist, so I won’t have to.

Muslims also died in the Twin Towers attack — in fact, at least 59 Muslims were murdered by the terrorists on 9-11, a grim tally greater than the number of pseudo-Islamic conspirators behind the attack. Since 9-11, most “Islamic” terrorist attacks have targeted Muslims, such as the recent bombing of the shrine of a Muslim saint in Pakistan.

Maybe it’s a gross oversimplification, but so much of our behavior as humans can be explained in terms of the fact that we humans are “pack animals”. Even in the smallest of groups (2), inevitably a hierarchy develops. While getting my hair cut yesterday, the discussion turned to the behavior of rabbits. I remarked that differently from other animal groups, the females are the dominant ones. The hairdresser quipped “You mean, just like humans.” Being completely outnumbered at the time, I had to meekly agree.

Thanks for the reference, Am, although I think my original charge was directed toward my fellow “conservatives” on board, though your statement contains a lot of truth as well. I know I’ve likely beaten the dead horse beyond recognition, but have one last question for the self-identified Christians on board, e.g. Scout, Dusty, @@, Peadawg, et al.:

Q: What is the ultimate meaning/value of being a Christian?

(1) It is a great guide to living well here on Earth

(2) It answers our deepest questions regarding existence and the meaning of life

(3) It is a conduit to guaranteeing a pleasant afterlife

(4) All or none of the above

(5) Other

While I’m sure that I’ve come across as being critical or anti-Christian to some of you, that’s not my intent. I’m really trying to delve into your psyches to see where you’re coming from. Like Hillbilly, I’d say all of the above. I’m not a Biblical scholar much less a theologian but I do take the Bible literally and believe it to be the errant word of God. I’ve read through the Bible a couple of times and understand that some books and passages like Leviticus for an example are difficult reads, however, you need to understand what God was dealing with in those times. I’ve not been a practicing Christian all of my life, only in the last 18 years. I’m a sinner like all of us and don’t put myself above my fellow man.

“Over the past year, we have significantly strengthened each of the three major elements – manpower, infrastructure, and technology. Currently we have over 20,000 Border Patrol Agents nationwide, more than ever before in the history of the country. As of July 1, 2010, we have constructed nearly all of the fencing that Congress has requested us to build – we have completed 646 miles along the southwest border, with about five miles to be completed this year. We have greatly improved our technological profile, purchasing and deploying 41 mobile surveillance systems (MSSs) to provide added radar and camera coverage along the borders, among other technologies, with plans to purchase additional off-the-shelf technology in FY 2010 and FY 2011. CBP also recently received approval to increase the miles of airspace available for Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) operations performed by the Office of Air and Marine(OAM) along the southwest border, enabling CBP to deploy UASs from the eastern tip of California extending east across the border into Texas.”

You may be right on that one, Dave, since we are all small specks in the grand scheme of things. What I’m trying to find out is the individual motivations of the various posters who identify with Christianity. Earlier, Scout seemed to be critical/concerned that Muslims extend their religious faith into arenas that Westerners typically don’t, such as common law, foreign policy, etc. From my perspective, many Christians do advocate a greater role for their religion than the law allows. Mike Huckabee, for example, stated that our Constitution needs to get in line with God’s Laws during the last Presidential election. I give him credit for being sincere in his beliefs, but am not sure if that statement was appropriate and whether it helped him or hurt him politically.

In my own, limited ways, I have tried to “serve God” via my service to other humans.

That may well be part of your way of serving but it isn’t for me to say what another person’s way of serving should be. That’s between that person and God. I think we have different roles we are supposed to play, in our service. Yours and mine might be the same, similar, or quite different. I’m not a predestinationist in the classic sense but I do believe each of us has a pre-determined purpose for being here. We have free will, so it’s up to us to find that purpose and work to fulfill it. No matter how well or how poorly we do at achieving that, we will fall short because we are human. That’s why we need Christ, in my opinion. Those are my thoughts.

LOL–I’m sure you meant the un – errant word of God, Del. I got yuor message, though.

“I’m a sinner like all of us and don’t put myself above my fellow man.”

Obviously, I’m no judge of anyone else’s heart, Del, but when you say it that way it strikes a good chord with me.

“(Hopefully Bruno enjoyed this message but if not, he can KMA, just sayin…)”

“inerrant.”

Yep, that’ll work. I was sure you wouldn’t want your statement to meant the OPPOSITE of what you were trying to say!

“Mike Huckabee, for example, stated that our Constitution needs to get in line with God’s Laws during the last Presidential election. I give him credit for being sincere in his beliefs, but am not sure if that statement was appropriate and whether it helped him or hurt him politically.”

Bruno, agreed. I, too, question those that wish to work their specific religious beliefs into our laws. I think Huckabee’s reliance on faith, when discussing government, will ultimately keep him from ever gaining the trust of a diverse group of voters.

Which brings me to another point. Why do so many Christians wear their faith as a badge of honor? Not that it isn’t, mind you, but I have given over 140 double donations of platelets in the past 6 1/2 years and helped save about 300 lives, but you don’t see me bringing that up in every conversation I have, nor do I try to get more people to donate as I do.

I realize there is a lot of joy in the Christian faith, but not everyone wants to share in that joy. Or belief.

Oh, well, in THAT case, Hope & Change is only 0 for 1 then.

Ex-presidents? One of the great stories is GHWB and Billy Boy working WITH each other for the tsunami survivors and after Katrina.

And for all you fellow Georgians and Jimmuh loathers out there, turn on How weather changed the World. it’s about the sandstorm that doomed operation Eagle Claw.” (Spin it how you must.)

“Why do so many Christians wear their faith as a badge of honor?”

I have my own opinion on this, which isn’t going to be popular…maybe, but I think there are too many people (not just Christians) who don’t truly take the trouble to UNDERSTAND *why* they should believe in their own religion. I think too many people carry the burden of being taught to believe because they were taught they would be punished if they didn’t.

So they don’t believe because they understandy why they should. They believe because they are afraid NOT to believe.

Just my opinion, but I think GWB did an excellent job of representing his faith while being very careful not to step on the toes of anyone who chose a different path. I doubt if any of the Libs on board will agree, but I think he is a good guy, fairly humble at heart, and a straight shooter. Obama? I don’t doubt that his “intentions” may be good, but I trust neither his judgment or honesty. I view him as a slick Chicago politician who really doesn’t understand the fundamentals of the business world. I don’t see the economy improving until we get new leadership in both Congress and the WH.

Doggone/GA, at 5:51, just like Yankee fans!

I love the Yanks but any serious NYY fan has suffered through some serious and long droughts (like virtually all of the 80s and the first half of the 90s).

Lots of johnny-come-latelys and fair winded fowl who wouldn’t know Ron Guidry from Ron Blomberg.

And I know it’s my hangup, but if you wear a red or green or yellow or pink Yankee cap, you deserve whatever mayhem befalls you.

BTW, arguably the greatest put down in baseball history was when the Braves eliminated (and embarrassed) the Mets one season and Chipper told their fans, “Now you can go home and be Yankee fans.”

Deliciously evil!

As for making jokes about Al, Bill, Teddy, John Edwards…..don’t you think that if they kept their pants on, nobody would make jokes. Shouldn’t they respect their wives?

“No matter how well or how poorly we do at achieving that, we will fall short because we are human. That’s why we need Christ, in my opinion.”

There may be something to what you say, HD. I know that the basis for most “12-step” programs is that we’re too weak as humans to do it on our own.

Doggone,

You make a great point that many believe but don’t take the time or trouble to truly understand why they believe. Understanding the basis for ones belief is essential, otherwise it is meaningless. I grew up in a home that believed, however, it wasn’t the priority, so, while I considered myself a believer, I really didn’t understand why and therefore didn’t really practice what I professed to believe in. I went into the military and had Methodist stamped on my dog tags but that’s as far as it went for several years of my life.

Hey Doggone/GA, I’ve been meaning to ask you about your nom de blogue.

None of beeswax, but it crossed my mind when I recently bought a Marvin Gaye compilation and this, of course, was on it.
