Travelin’ Music from out on Texas Highway 61

When I was out west earlier this month, an old running buddy — let’s call him Marv — and I grabbed daughter Elly and revisited one of our early haunts, a little blues joint outside Vancouver, WA known as the Cascade Tavern. That night, we were treated to the musical stylings of Bug Henderson, who had been booked into the Portland Blues Festival that weekend until the promoter pulled the gig on him at the last minute.

Bugs was not a happy man about that cancellation — in fact, he put an awful lot of feeling that night into a song about how hard it is to make a living with his “starvation box” of a guitar. But since he was in town anyway, he ended up at the Cascade. His loss was our gain, because he’s quite a picker.

Here he is playing Dylan’s “Highway 61,” Texas blues style. Enjoy your evening folks.

He was a great blues harp player, and lived hard, as those pictures suggest. He was big in Portland for years until Uncle Sam forced him to do eight to ten in the federal pen on cocaine peddling charges. His band stuck together in his absence — played as the No DeLay Band — and was waiting for him upon his release.

He picked up his career from there. As I understand it, he died of cancer — a day or two after being diagnosed. I’m guessing he thought he felt bad, but it didn’t feel that much different than he always did. bad.

A blues song in its own right.

“Out of the supercharged intellectual world, three jarring theories of the twentieth century emerged: Einstein’s relativity, Heisenberg’s uncertainty and Kurt Godel’s incompleteness.”

“Godel (one of the most significant mathematicians of all time) decided to become a U.S. citizen in 1947. He took his preparation for the exam very seriously, studied the Constitution carefully, and (as might be expected by the formulator of the incompleteness theory) found what he believed to be a logical flaw. There was an internal inconsistency, he insisted, that would allow the entire government to degenerate into tyranny.”

“Einstein” by Walter Isaacson

“He rather excitedly told me in looking at the Constitution to his distress he had found some inner constradictions and that he could show in a perfectly legal manner it would be possible for somebody to become a dictator and set up a Fascist regime, never intended by those who drew up the Constitution.”

“Out of the supercharged intellectual world, three jarring theories of the twentieth century emerged: Einstein’s relativity, Heisenberg’s uncertainty and Kurt Godel’s incompleteness.”

Though not as well known as Einstein’s Special Relativity or even Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, Godel Incompleteness Theorem shook the foundations of both mathematics and philosophy by proving that any system of propositions is (1) Incomplete (i.e. there will always be true statements that are unprovable within the system) and (2) Inconsistent (i.e. there will always be contradictory statements within the system).

IMO, this is the message that Jesus brought to us 2000 years earlier by elevating the “spirit” of the Law over the “letter” of the Law. The Sadduces and Pharisees of his time thought that it was enough to follow the “letter” of the Law.

popeye,

Jefferson is a street in the infamous Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco where the hippie movement began and ended. You created a Jefferson airplane by splitting the side of a cardboard match open enough to allow a joint to fit in. Close the hole in the match by holding both ends and it formed an “airplane” (the joint being the fuselage and the match the wings). Don’t Bogart that joint my friend. ;-)

Josef…I don’t normally copy/paste long posts…but I can’t help it. I know you’ll enjoy this one!

Part of rebuilding New Orleans caused residents often to be challenged with the task of tracing home titles back potentially hundreds of years. With a community rich with history stretching back over two centuries, houses have been passed along through generations of family, sometimes making it quite difficult to establish ownership. Here’s a great letter an attorney wrote to the FHA on behalf of a client:

You have to love this lawyer……..

A New Orleans lawyer sought an FHA loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted if he could prove satisfactory title to a parcel of property being offered as collateral. The title to the property dated back to 1803, which took the lawyer three months to track down. After sending the information to the FHA, he received the following reply.

(Actual reply from FHA):

“Upon review of your letter adjoining your client’s loan application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented the application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear the title back to its origin.”

Annoyed, the lawyer responded as follows: (Actual response):

Your letter regarding title in Case No.189156 has been received. I note that you wish to have title extended further than the 206 years covered by the present application. I was unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly those working in the property area, would not know that Louisiana was purchased by the United States from France in 1803, the year of origin identified in our application. For the edification of uninformed FHA bureaucrats, the title to the land prior to U.S. ownership was obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain . The land came into the possession of Spain by Right of Discovery made in the year 1492 by a sea captain named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to India by the Spanish monarch, Queen Isabella. The good Queen Isabella, being a pious woman and almost as careful about titles as the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope before she sold her jewels to finance Columbus ’s expedition. Now the Pope, as I’m sure you may know, is the emissary of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and God, it is commonly accepted, created this world. Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume that God also made that part of the world called Louisiana . God, therefore, would be the owner of origin and His origins date back to before the beginning of time, the world as we know it, and the FHA. I hope you find God’s original claim to be satisfactory. Now, may we have our damn loan?

The loan was immediately approved.

Actually the first Dead show I saw was the last one before he went into the coma. It was at RFK in DC, Bob Dylan opened with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as his band. It was early July and 97 degrees when the Dead took the stage. I’m not so sure Jerry was NEVER the same, those Hampton shows in ‘88 stack up pretty well against anything else I’ve heard. When he came out of the coma he couldn’t even play his guitar and basically had to re-learn it all. Merl Saunders stayed at his house and helped him through it. When he came back to the stage this was the first song they played.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1976-06-03.mtx.seamons.91912.sbeok.shnf

Your rain falls like crazy fingers
Peals of fragile thunder keeping time
Recall the days that still are to come some seem blue.
Hang your heart on laughing willow stray
Down to the water, deep sea of love
beneath the sweet calm face of the sea swift undertow.

Life may be sweeter for this, I don’t know,
See how it feels in the end.
May Lady Lullaby sing plainly for you soft, strong, sweet and true.
Cloud hands reaching from a rainbow tapping at the window, touch your hair
So swift and bright strange figures of light float in air.

Who can stop what must arrive now? Something new is waiting to be born
Dark as the night you’re still by my side shine inside .
Gone are the days we stopped to decide where we should go, we just ride.
Gone are the broken eyes we saw through in dreams gone, both dream and lie.

Life may be sweeter for this, I don’t know,
Feels like it might be all right,
While Lady Lullaby sings plainly through you Love still rings true.
midnight on a carousel ride, reaching for the gold ring down inside.
Never could reach it, just slips away but I try.

Got this from Amnesty International last night…

Dear Norm

We are thrilled to report that earlier this week Congress passed the Tribal Law and Order Act as an amendment to H.R. 725, a groundbreaking and long-overdue piece of legislation that tackles violent crime against Native American and Alaska Native women.

A huge thank you to the thousands of Amnesty supporters like you who took action to make this human rights victory possible.

Because of you, Native American and Alaska Native women will no longer be trapped in a mindboggling, jurisdictional maze that allows perpetrators to rape with impunity.

Every Native American and Alaska Native woman will be given the chance to:

get a police response,
have access to a rape kit,
have the opportunity to see her case prosecuted, and
see justice served for crimes committed against her.
Spurred by our hard-hitting 2007 report, Maze of Injustice, Amnesty’s millions-strong, global human rights movement has worked tirelessly to ensure this legislation became a reality.

People like you have set the stage for reversing the devastating rate of sexual violence that Native American and Alaska Native women have endured for much too long.

This is what we can accomplish when we work together.

I want to thank you again for all you do. This is a truly amazing victory for women’s human rights and we couldn’t have done it without you.

Thank you,
Rachel and the rest of the Stop Violence Against Women team

If you don’t eat your meat, you can’t have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?!
