So Newt Gingrich thinks that we — the United States of America, champion of religious freedom — should reduce ourselves to the level of Saudi Arabia. The former speaker of the House believes that the American people must abandon the standards of freedom championed by Thomas Jefferson and our other Founding Fathers — “American elites,” he would sneeringly call them — to instead mirror the intolerance of Wahhabi extremists on the Arabian peninsula.
“There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia,” Gingrich writes in a new blog post. “The time for double standards that allow Islamists to behave aggressively toward us while they demand our weakness and submission is over.”
So let’s toss the First Amendment overboard, huh Newt? To defeat Islamic extremists, we must become like Islamic extremists, because apparently their way leads to strength and ours to weakness. With arguments such as this, Gingrich betrays an utter lack of confidence in the founding principles of this nation:
“America is experiencing an Islamist cultural-political offensive designed to undermine and destroy our civilization. Sadly, too many of our elites are the willing apologists for those who would destroy them if they could.
No self deception.
The time to take a stand is now – at this site on this issue.”
It really doesn’t bother me much when people such as Sarah Palin spout this nonsense. She doesn’t know much, she hasn’t been exposed to much, and in the absence of knowledge she falls back upon instinct. I think that instinct often leads her astray, but at least she’s being fundamentally honest about her beliefs.
Gingrich, on the other hand, has a Phd in history from Tulane. He is driven not by ignorance but by a vile and knowing cynicism.
Gingrich may rail against submission and surrender, but submission and surrender is precisely what he counsels. We cannot fight Islamist extremism by becoming like them. From the very beginning, Osama bin Laden has tried to frame this conflict as a war between the West and Islam, because that’s how he attracts volunteers willing to die for his lunatic cause. With statements endorsing this as a war with Islam, Gingrich enlists himself in bin Laden’s unholy cause.
And what drives this craven, cowardly abandonment of the concepts that have long made the United States so admired? Because, in the grasping mind of Gingrich, we are threatened by an “Islamist cultural-political offensive designed to undermine and destroy our civilization”? Seriously?
America’s military dominance is dwarfed only by its global dominance in the political and cultural spheres, yet Gingrich believes that to avoid defeat at Islamic hands we must abandon our fundamental principles and behave as they do?
No. We are a far stronger, and far better, nation than he believes us to be.
