Obama administration apologizes, offers to rehire Sherrod

In his just-concluded press conference, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has publicly apologized to Shirley Sherrod for acting much too hastily, and without full possession of the facts. He seems to have taken his mistakes to heart, and his regret seems sincere.

The department has also offered to rehire Sherrod, an offer that she is reportedly considering.

I think it’s fair to say that Vilsack and the administration overreacted, out of fear and ignorance, and were “snookered” by Andrew Breitbart and others, as the NAACP put it. The secretary has now apologized, as has the NAACP. The actual perpetrators of the fraud have not followed suit, and almost certainly will never do so.

If Jay would complain about perpetrating fraud he should clean up his own act first. He claimed Brietbart had the full video based only upon the fact that Brietbart released another clip; he refuses to note another edit spot on the full video; he ignores the fact that even though she was not a government employee she was indeed considering giving help (tax dollars) based on race; he misses the point entirely that the federal bureaucracy is full of inept buffoons like the people who fired her; he minimizes the approval of racist statements by the NAACP crowd in attendance, which was the thrust of the video clip that Brietbart presented; he thinks it is OK for the NAACP to call Tea Partiers racist based on false reports of racist slurs that were supposedly yelled at a healthcare protest (this has been thoroughly refuted) but not OK for Brietbart to show actual video of racist comments at the NAACP.

What a buffoon. And he has kids – hey, if he can mention them to make his point then I can bring them up too….he might be a clown but NOT a hypocrite…..one day they will see what an intellectually dishonest cretin their Daddy is.

Firing of Sherrod was irresponsible. Whatever happen occured a long time ago and before she worked for the US government.

Before you you get to self righteous about the right wing media please remember how quickly Obama condemned the police officer earlier in his presidency without getting all the facts.

Also, the crowd chuckled when she stated she was deciding on how much help she was going to give him. Somewhat troubling even in the context of the entire video.

Jay

July 21st, 2010
6:09 pm

Oh, I see, RW. YOU don’t think it was about the crowd. It’s just Breitbart who was claiming that, supposedly from the beginning. It was never REALLY about Shirley Sherrod.

Well, that fallback position is just as indefensible. Here’s what Breitbart said in his first post on the subject:
http://biggovernment.com/abreitbart/2010/07/19/video-proof-the-naacp-awards-racism2010/

“Context is everything.

In this piece you will see video evidence of racism coming from a federal appointee and NAACP award recipient and in another clip from the same event a perfect rationalization for why the Tea Party needs to exist…”

He then goes into a long recounting of the Tea Party vs. NAACP feud before returning to the tape.

“We are in possession of a video from in which Shirley Sherrod, USDA Georgia Director of Rural Development, speaks at the NAACP Freedom Fund dinner in Georgia. In her meandering speech to what appears to be an all-black audience, this federally appointed executive bureaucrat lays out in stark detail, that her federal duties are managed through the prism of race and class distinctions.

In the first video, Sherrod describes how she racially discriminates against a white farmer. She describes how she is torn over how much she will choose to help him. And, she admits that she doesn’t do everything she can for him, because he is white. Eventually, her basic humanity informs that this white man is poor and needs help. But she decides that he should get help from “one of his own kind”. She refers him to a white lawyer.

Sherrod’s racist tale is received by the NAACP audience with nodding approval and murmurs of recognition and agreement. Hardly the behavior of the group now holding itself up as the supreme judge of another groups’ racial tolerance.

The crowd reaction is mentioned, but only in passing. The emphasis is on “racism coming from a federal appointee and NAACP award recipient” who manages her federal duties “through the prism of race and class distinctions” and “racially discriminates against a white farmer.”

Breitbart’s latest claims are after-the-fact baloney, to use a sadly inadequate euphemism.

We see that you and Jay want to go off on that issue…not the one at hand…answers the question of earlier, I’d say…

I agree he should be fired, but he took his marching orders from the White House…anybody who thinks otherwise is in Lala Land

I agree but you can’t fire the president. I believe he was directed by the White House.

I know….I’m not black so I have no point of reference, but for the first third of the video when Mrs. Sherrod was reflecting back, I kept thinking to myself…

She’s talking to the NAACP, the second A stands for Advancement. Hard to get there from where she began. She did, however, acknowledge great strides.

I say start at the point where we are today and move forward. Leave all the excess baggage behind. It just weighs everybody down.

Let’s see. Some blogger posts something on his website about some bureaucrat. White House goes berserk and orders the bureaucrat fired.

Conclusion: It’s the blogger’s fault she was fired!

LOL.

Dusty said of Ms. Sherrod A declared racist by her own admission.!

Dusty,

You complained about all the attention that has been given here regarding the Sherrod case. However, it is apparent that you have not bothered to read much of what has been afforded us in the way of videos, quotes and comments. Please go back and read so that your comments don’t come out looking so like much of a disconnect.

eyes,

Fox could be trying to be tricky by half here if they were reporting this on their website earlier, but they claim they first broadcast the story that night and Sherrod had already been fired. The broadcast part of that story should be pretty easy to check since I’m sure Media Matters has them recorded 24/7.

And I’m more than happy to have others go to that link to make the same judgment themselves. It says what it says.

Fair enough. It doesn’t really square with you not linking to the story in the first place though.

Hillbilly:

The lesson here is, when the going gets tough, there’s always somebody willing to shove you into the mouth of the volcano, as a sacrifice.

‘Ya know, my husband is affectionately known as the King of Cliches, but I swear you’ve got him beat. I read some of your stuff to him…he thinks it’s great.

I agree with you on the anglo bent…but, man, somebody of that level of education and intelligence out living with the Indians! That book was generations ahead of its time…

I’m going to assume that you are talking about Rev. Jesse Bushyhead…patriarch of the Bushyhead clan…

Man, it sure does sound like the NAACP is all over kookman’s rear end, hahahaha, someone provided him some serious motivation.

It’s all in a day’s pay, eh, jay?

Tell you what, I can see this Sherrod story becoming the basis for a screenplay one day.

Agreed we can’t fire him, but he needs to have his feet held to the fire on this one…no free pass with a “we’re sorry…” delivered by the press secretary…cheap cheep in my opinion…

BTW
He better be careful, sounds like Brother Jesse’s coming his way with the shears!
