Handel’s fate may depend on who her runoff foe turns out to be
The polls close in a half hour, putting an end to a lot of recent conjecture and providing fodder for a whole new round of predictions and projections, particularly in the governor’s race.
On the Democratic side, I don’t think there’s much suspense. Roy Barnes is almost certain to win without a runoff, although I also remember an election night eight years ago when Barnes was also expected to win pretty handily. I’m sure Barnes remembers it even better.
I suspect Karen Handel will come out of tonight as the GOP frontrunner, with a close and late-called race for the all-important second-place among John Oxendine, Nathan Deal and Eric Johnson. Handel no doubt hopes it will be Oxendine, whose candidacy and political career have been fatally — and justifiably — damaged. If Ox sustains enough support to make it into the two-person runoff, Handel will win the nomination easily.
If it’s Deal or Johnson, things get more tricky. With her blanket condemnation of GOP legislative leadership on ethics grounds, Handel angered a good deal of the party establishment. And despite her endorsement from Sarah Palin, she’s vulnerable to attacks from her party’s right. If the rest of the party unites against her in the runoff, which seems possible if not probable, she could lose.
Nothing to do now but wait for the numbers to roll in.

If @@ voted a Republican ballot in her area it would be throwing her vote away. I’ve done the same thing a few times myself when there was no compelling Republican race in my area. I’ve managed to get Cynthia McKinney expelled twice that way.

@@ voting Republican is like me voting Democratic in my area. I’m wasn’t too excited about the choices on either ballot, so I flipped a coin to decide. Wouldn’t you know, I ended up with a Democratic ballot. I let my daughter decide who to pick. I figured it was a throw away vote anyway.

The Democrat controlled Congress must pass legislation to end the Bush/Cheney tax cuts for the rich immediately. Congress must not wait until the end of the year for them to expire. Congress must vote to end the Bush/Cheney tax cuts before the August recess. Congress must also pass legislation to stop multinational corporations from shipping American jobs and factories overseas. Congress must vote on this legislation before the August recess.

Two of the north end families have been feuding for generations. I think Handel has a tough time with Eric Johnson in the second spot, but beats Deal or Oxendine easily in a runoff. She’s a little too easily swayed by confrontation to suit my tastes. Deal was never thought well enough of up here in the N-Ga area, and Oxendine is just a little bit weird.
It was difficult for me to vote for more than 5 or 6 people on the ballot this year. Frankly, I left most of my choices blank, because many of the candidates didn’t deserve my vote. I wouldn’t give Isakson a vote if I had a gun to my head. Same with Cagle. Insurance commissioner is going to be an interesting one on the GOP side, as is the AG spot.

I’ll say one good thing about Charley…he did a lot to help senior citizens here. Still does. They loved the guy…both white and black. To them, he was a legend.
Charley’s in his 80’s now…in very bad health. Don’t know what St. Peter will have to say to Charley when he shows up. I think Charley worries about it too.
Charley definitely knew the art of the deal. If an opportunity knocked, he was there to take full advantage of it. If it was conflict of interest, he didn’t care.

Mick, While your intent is noble, you’re missing some very important facts of economics. If we make goods on shore with $25/hr employees vs. offshore with $1/day employees, goods will be more expensive for everyone who buys them. Assuming you eliminate the foreign made competition via your import taxes, American consumers will pay even more. In that scenario, what is driving income up to balance the increased cost of goods? Nothing. AND, a fair amount of what we’re trading with these countries, many of them dirt poor, is food. What goods do we currently make that a laborer in Taiwan can afford and can’t get cheaper locally. Not much.
While I agree there are companies who offshore production and services just to make a bigger profit to satisfy the investment community, many of them are faced with either finding ways to reduce costs or failing entirely because they can’t compete with lower cost producers. And failing to satisfy the investment community is a certain road to failure as well when the money source dries up.
It’s a global economy and we can’t realistically take our toys and go home. As I said, your wishes are noble, but not realistic in the world we live in.

I wonder if Handel will participate in debates now. For some reason I do not see her defeating Barnes in a general election, she is really not known outside of Atlanta, mainly North Fulton. Barnes may win on name recognition alone and the teachers have had enough of the furloughs and pay cuts.

Given how undeniably red this state is, we could EASILY have a scenario where both our Governor (Handel) and Lt. Gov (Cagle) DO NOT have college degrees.

#3 – Repeal the 16th Amendment (Income Tax) and replace it with a Flat Tax or Fair Tax, a National Lottery and massive consumption taxes on alcohol, tobacco and marijuana.
#4 – Congress must repeal The War Powers Act. This law allows the POTUS to start wars without an official declaration by Congress. Congress granted it and they can take it back. Get it done.

I can show you plenty of waiters and waitresses, burger king shift managers, and people in the unemployment line, with master degrees ..not all education is valuable in the marketplace..ask the english major who was stacking boxes at barnes and noble the other day..probably for an hourly wage.

And whether you like her or not, the impact of Sarah Palin on Republican politics throughtout the nation is undeniable. Does anyone think Handel gets the most votes, or even in the run-off, WITHOUT Palin’s endorsement? Tonight just further strengthens her standing as the Republican King (Queen) Maker.
It’s going to be fascinating to watch her go after the Republican nomination for President, to see both how she holds up and how the non-Repubican public responds to her.

IRONICALLY, handel is just the candidate americans with new eyes are looking for. america it seems are all now ready to put integrity back into government because they see what the reverse is doing to this country. it is handel’s PALINESQUE attitude that will serve her well in the now conclusive runoff. the palin-factor is real and working. the woman has political eyes we need almost as badly as we need political air.

I can never understand it when people immediately tout that their candidate “has integrity” or “is a man/woman of integrity.”
Exactly how are you so sure that Handel has integrity? What has she done to warrant your assurances? And I don’t mean to pick on you and Handel……I would say the same about anyone on here bragging about their candidate’s integrity. None us know these people beyond their campaign stumps and maybe a couple years in public office. Just because someone has managed to avoid public scandal does not automatically mean they have integrity.
How many politicians, athletes, and celebrities that we all thought had “integrity” have we seen go down in flames in ethical scandals???
Face it, you and I don’t really know if Handel (or any other candidate) has integrity or not. If that’s your lead selling point about your candidate then be careful you’re not just drinking the campaign/party ideology Kool-Aid.

Again, you are naive. You obviously don’t understand that a $15/hr employee costs the company more like $25/hr “loaded” with benefits, payroll taxes, etc. That’s the problem with you and many like you, Mick. Your intentions are grand, but you’re uneducated and lack the understanding of how things acutally work in the real world. Do yourself a favor and go find out what the terms “loaded” costs mean from an employers standpoint and the term EBIT. When you figure out what EBIT is, then figure out what a normal company budgets for the “T”.
And, Mick, nobody wants the wars we’re in or any other war. The statement you made above is just plain dumb. Whether you choose to believe it or not, we were/are going to fight this battle with the muslim nations eventually. It was either going to be on our turf or theirs and we were either going to do something to stop the terrorist attacks or they would have continued and they would have become more and more agressive toward us. They were executing terrorist attacks all through the Clinton adminstration, so don’t act like Bush’s policies caused it all. The 911 guys trained for what they did while Clinton was in office, not Bush. There is no “be nice to them and they’ll leave us alone”. That doesn’t work with bullies. Ask most of Europe how that worked with Hitler.

KAO, Bill Gates went to one of the best private high schools in the nation while Karen went to a failing inner city school in Baltimore. The school Bill Gates went to got him his start in programming by having better computer access than most universities of the time! Graduating from his prep school was pretty much as good as graduating from the average state university. Karen on the other hand “walked across the stage” of her high school’s graduation ceremony which is an odd way to answer the question of if she even graduated.
Karen has done well for herself but had been very generous with her bio. It is silly to compare her to someone like Bill Gates.

how shallow to access the intellect of someone simply by the school they probably could only afford. how many brilliant minds have formed corporations in this country that ph.d’s have employed under? the major portion of ones growth and intellect is inate and many times comes long AFTER leaving their ivy league or State institutions.

until you can find a reason to call her a woman without integrity you MUST respect her for the reputation she has ganared so far and the way she has conducted her life so far. had we done that with obama we would not be where we are today. obama’s background was filled with quesitonable associations including his supporting a pro-communist candidate in Kenya called Raili Odinga who vowed to bring Sharia Law to Kenya if he were elected, but you simply dismissed that?

realistically, Jack – only if warranted.
lets face it: what palin did was beat democrats at their own game. they tried to render her and her family peniless. she took the ball away from them and gave them no place else to run. she not only cut off their legs of trivial lawsuits taking up her time so as to force her to become an ineffective governor but in the process she carved out a huge piece of the american financial $$ for her and her family.
while democrats thought they were cutting her down; she accepted it as pruning and branched out the more beautiful with each pruning. you havent thrown a single punch at her that she has not tossed right back into your court, now have you? if you think you have, please name one.
obama with the excellent school but palin with the excellent execution, application?
