Congress close to financial reform; GOP recoils

For months, Congress has debated how — and in some case whether — to tighten regulation of Wall Street in the wake of the 2008 economic meltdown. Throughout the process, Republicans have been doing the banksters’ bidding, fighting hard to defend the overdogs and the uptrodden.

Early this morning, however, House and Senate negotiators finally settled their differences, producing financial reform legislation that both chambers are expected to adopt next week and send to the president for his signature.

The response from the GOP was immediate.

U.S. Rep. Joe Barton issued a heartfelt apology to Goldman Sachs, AIG and Bernie Madoff, proclaiming it a “tragedy of the first proportion.” Newt Gingrich, on Fox News, explained how this confirms the existence of a secular-socialist conspiracy. “Frankly,” he said, “‘Chavez’ and ‘Hitler’ have the exact same number of letters as ‘Barack’.”

Glenn Beck kept crying, Bill Kristol kept pressing his case that the best way to fix the economy was to invade Iran, Sharron Angle observed that this was nothing that Second Amendment remedies couldn’t fix, and John McCain insisted that his debate with JD Hayworth be canceled so he could fly to Washington to stare off into space while other people talked about things he didn’t understand.

Is this a great country, or what?

Go to go to work.

What DO you liberals do for a living?

But just for fun:

Are you a Democrat, a Republican, or a Southerner?

Here is a little test that will help you decide.

The answer can be found by posing the following question:

You’re walking down a
deserted street with your wife
and two small children.

Suddenly, an Islamic
Terrorist with a huge knife
comes around the corner,
locks eyes with you,
screams obscenities, praises
Allah, raises the knife, and charges at you…

You are carrying a
Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP, and you are an expert shot.
You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.
What do you do?
…………………………………………………………..
THINK CAREFULLY AND
THEN SCROLL DOWN:

Democrat’s Answer:
Well, that’s not enough information to answer the question!
Does the man look poor or oppressed? And Am I Racial Profiling?
Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?
Could we run away?
What does my wife think?
What about the kids?
Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?
What does the law say about this situation?
Does the pistol have appropriate safety built into it?
Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kindof message does this send to society and to my children?
Is it possible he’d be happy with just killing me?
Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me?
If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me?
Should I call 9-1-1?
Why is this street so deserted?
We need to raise taxes, have paint & weed day.
Can we make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.
I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come to a consensus.
This is all so confusing!

Republican’s Answer:

BANG!

Southerner’s Answer:

What some of you don’t recollect is that mortgage writers were STEERING people who qualified for good mortgage loans into subprime and risky loans for the sole reason that they would get a bigger bonus. They were misleading and flat out lying to mortgage customers – all so they could get a fat bonus.

Uh no…everyone will get a piece of the pie. The point being this comes as no surprise to the Reps as we see thru Obis nonsense. His constituency does not.

This banking sillyness will impact the Dems who dont read their cc agreements, checking account agreements, loan agreements then whine and complain about “I didnt know” and other stupid statements…the very ones Obi promised to help.

For the rest of us its pretty much business as usual…close a few credit card accounts, pay them off prior to the high interests rates kicked in, move checking accounts around.

Obama and the members of Congress who voted for this much of nothing are behaving like “fluff girls”.

After 10 -20 years and at least a war or two to get the economy churning…we could get our economy up and going again…THEN, we could do it ALL again in another 30-50 years..

Regarding the financial reform bill…..

You know the usual pattern: Conservatives will moan because they don’t read the bill or know what’s in the bill and say “but nobody’s read it.” Then they’ll tune into Beck and Hannity (who haven’t read it, either) to “tell” them what they think is in the bill. Beck and Hannity will have found out what to “think’ was in the bill from conservative think tanks who are all tied into lobbyists who already hate the bill.

Endless cycle of idiocy.

“But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy. ”

Yeah, Doggone, THAT worked out just swell, didn’t it?

We found out that increased costs for businesses was in the bill, despite promises to the contrary. We found out that it was going to increase the deficit, despite promises to the contrary. And we found out that low income people would be losing their low cost plans, despite promises to the contrary. We found out the stimulus bill didn’t create many jobs at all, unless you were in the public sector, despite promises to the contrary. We found out that unemployment did go up above 8%, despite promises to the contrary.

And why, given this sterling track record, would you expect this new bill to actually do what it is intended to do?

Tax Payer, well, perhaps Beck is the Wingnut Messiah. If it is the Word of Beck, it must be true. And if the bloggers on the right can get their factoids from conservative media, I suppose we should not be surprised when their representatives in Congress hop on the bandwagon.
Why read, why think, why investigate, when you can get a quick factoid from Beck?

Poor Dusty. She cannot defend her false claims so she does what she does best. Makes more false claims. You brought up the pacifier, Dusty, so you keep it. Further, you clearly do not have more important things to do than doing your so-called quibbling since you are here doing it. Finally, if you got oily from your Gulf visit, try GoJo.

This Guy- And you have facts around this?

It’s called criminal testimony. Not to worry as I’m sure the “Teflon Messiah” will find someone to fall on the sword for him. I wouldn’t be surprized if Emanuel gets taken down eventually.

Paul,

Beck is a liar. Is that good enough for you?

NIF,

“HE trying to impose a no drill moratorium. He was turned away by the Federal legal system. NOW HIS IS FIGHTING TO IMPOSE HIS WILL WHICH WILL CAUSE JOBS TO BE LOST.”

Obama is trying to avoid another deepwater spill. The judge that shot down the moratorium should have recused himself from the lawsuit due to his investments in oil companies. Those jobs would not have been lost, but only put on hold for a few months. Those people could have gotten unemployment, you know, the big checks that the GOP claims is keeping people from looking for jobs.

You get on this blog daily and spew Limbaugh lies and delusions.

Dusty- The only thing I like in Chicago is the dinosauer in their museum

Comiskey Park is really nice (no matter how the President mispronounces it). I could also name a player, past or present, who plays for the Sox that I respected.

The Museum of Science and Industry is also nice as well as the prevouis mentioned Field museum.

JKL2, So if I testify as follows, “I think that JKL2 is stating what he hopes is true, not what is, in fact, true.”, my testimony would be fact? No?

Interesting that all of the foreclosures on my street were at the hands of self professed republicans. Young couples in over their heads. Trying to be bigshots. But like the rest, total imposters.

Jay,

I didn’t realize you had such a cool sense of humor.

But, how sad it could actually be true commentary from the party of NO WAY!

“The country has been a world leader for 150 years. It has been under the same laws for 300 years.”

Let’s see, the USA became a world leader in 1860. Neat!

And the Constitution went into effect in 1710, exactly 77 years before it was written. Cool!

Is this a great country or what?

theeyeshaveit-

My fault again. I forgot you demwits would revert back to the Clinton example of testifying as an inconvenience rather than a means of discovery. Oral sex isn’t really sex (and don’t think that hasn’t had an impact on children) because I’m not sure what the definition of “it” is.

I believe they said it was an audio tape though. But I’m sure no level of evidence will be able to convince you of the truth. (waiting for granny to respond)

How can anyone post comments on a topic of exaggeration? Oh well maybe a little travlin music later on might lighten things up a bit. The Democrats have been having it rough these past months, so some exaggeration probably boosts their morale.

One requirement of presenting a valid point in a supporting a position is to have a valid understanding of the matter being discussed.

How many of those that are opposed to financial reform are aware of credit default swaps, derivatives, fidicuary responsibilities and insurance contracts?
