To start this Friday on a lighter note, this is pretty funny:
Back when I was in college (Carnegie Mellon class of 2000), a friend who was attending the University of Chicago gave me a placard that was posted hither and thither on Chicago’s South Side: a dorky-faced guy with a ridiculously toothy grin smiling out at us. It read
“Barack Obama
for State Senate”My buddy Josh and I thought this was hilarious. Over the years, we turned the guy on the placard into a superhero. We’d be studying for one hard exam or another and would say to one another: “You know who could ace the piss out of this test right now?” The other would respond, “Barack Obama!” to which the first would respond, inevitably, “… for state senate!”
Or we’d be at the gym: “Man, these weights are tough! … Know who could lift them without breaking a sweat?” “Barack Obama!” “… for state senate!”
The years go by. It’s 2004. There’s a dude up on the stage at the Democratic National Convention who’s making everyone ask, “Why do I have to vote for Kerry? Why can’t I vote for this guy?” Josh and I called one another: “Uh … dude, do you see who’s on stage right now?” It was surreal.
It’s still surreal. Every few months it occurs to me afresh that Josh and I were making this obscure local politician the punchline of a joke probably a decade before he became president of the United States. Bizarre.
You may now commence with the “He’s still the punchline of a joke” discussion.

Agreed, and at least you ended up with a cogent point.

Typically an insult reveals more about the person insulting than the person being insulted. My basic point is blaming Bush will work for so long. Every president does it so what Obama is doing is not unusual. However, It won’t work forever.
It also loses points with moderates because Obama proclaimed or his supporters proclaim he was different than all those Washington politicians. However,
I still believe that two years is to short of a time to evaluate his performance but 10 years is way to long.

Obama will be a one-term elected official for the same reason Jimmy Carter was a one term elected official. They are bad leaders who surround themselves with a bad cabinet.
Can we add George H.W. Bush to this list? You bias the argument by selectively leaving out others who fit the one-term criterion.

You seem to be excusing the problems or performance so far of the country during Obama administations (sic) (You may want to consider proof reading or getting a spell checker) on the problems of Bush and before you said it would take at least 10 years to clean it up.
And you seem to have a very difficult time with standard written English. Just this morning, I gave Obama a grade of C-. And inferred he deserved worse. Claiming that it is unfair to compare his presidency with Obama’s because it took him four years to fail, while Obama has taken less than two years to completely screw up our economy and lose prestige in the World, Jimmy Carter suggests that fair-minded Americans give President Obama a chance to redeem himself before they judge his tenure against his own.

Talk about a joke! How dare Obama blame Bush for the current predicament! Here are some quotes I think you will find interesting:
“I tell you what the numbers are showing. They’re showing that we’ve inherited an economic slowdown and the country is in an economic slowdown. And so what a President should ask and what the Congress should ask is what can we do to stimulate economic growth. And we responded with tax relief.” – George W. Bush 8/23/2001
“The President’s policies, complemented by 12 interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve to ease deflationary pressures, are succeeding. Despite the recession we inherited and despite 9/11 and the corporate scandals, this economy is growing. America has now entered its second year of economic growth.” Dick Cheney 1/10/2003
And finally, when asked by a REPORTER… “and we’re running a $455 billion deficit, as are you, all other things being equal, wouldn’t you be upset about it?”
BUSH replied, “Let me tell you something, the deficit was caused by a recession which we inherited and did something about. The deficit was caused because we spent more money on fighting a war, and the American people expect a President to do what is necessary to win a war. So I look forward to taking this debate on. I really do. We did the right thing when it came to tax relief. We inherited a tough situation.” 8/14/2003

The Dems actual took the House and Senate in Jan 2007. The problems in the housing market started prior to 2007. Bush was also in favor of expanding home ownership plus Greenspan keep interest rates low fueling the housing bubble. Also, there was resistance by both Bush and Clinton administration to regulate parts of the financial industry that contributed to the downfall of the economy. The financial industry is a heavy contributir to both parties.
Unfortunely, for both conservative and liberal, democrats and republicans their is blame all around. I wish one party was at fault that would make correcting the problem easy.

OTPVol, very good post. I think the difference between Carter and Obama lies somewhere between Carter’s humility and Obama’s hubris. Of course, this is as much due to the eras (1970’s vs. 2000’s) and their cultural/ethnic values (white, Christian, southern Democrat from two-parent home, born and raised in same hometown vs. black, hybrid indoctrination, northern – CHICAGO – Democrat from single family home, who moved often). and, I am not some “he’s a Muslim” birther. They were born and raised in different environments and different eras, but I think they were both, as you note “idealists” who for whatever reason did not demonstrate the ability to lead a nation. As a sidebar, I think Carter had some decent “ideas” – he was the first to warn of the geo-political and economic consequences of our consumerist gluttony and dependence on oil, but again, perhaps the dream that things could be played out any other way, prevented effected his leadership. I think Obama is, as was noted (Bada Bing, I think) like a hologram or some “post-Bush” fabrication. Very much form over substance, which unfortunately is the nature of the beast in contemporary politics. You gotta sell the sizzle, not the steak, right?

President Obama is already one of the greatest presidents this country has ever had. I believe that by the end of his 2 terms, he might very well be hailed as the greatest ever, because of the nature of the enormous problems this country has because of mistakes, actions and inactions by past presidents. In just 18 short months, President Obama has already pulled the American economy literally out of the ditch and turned it around, provided healthcare for most, if not all, Americans (we are the last civilized country to do so for its people), appointed (and is in the process of appointing) 2 female Supreme Court justices, won a Nobel Peace Prize, presided over the safe rescue of a ship’s captain from pirates, improved our relations with people all around the world (including China and Russia), begun to pull our troops out of Iraq, gotten BP to put up $20 billion as the START of a fund to reimburse aggrieved fisherman and their families — the list goes on and on. How many past presidents ever had to deal with even ONE of these challenges? Those who did can be counted on one hand, and NONE ever had to deal with them all.
Just one of these successful accomplishments in a 4 or 8 year term would have been hailed as a success for any other president, but just think — President Obama has done ALL of them — in just 18 short months. There is still a lot to do; no other president has inherited the kinds of problems this president has, but we can all thank God that we have President Obama in the White House, because he is so obviously the man for the job in these treacherous times in which we live.

What have the Democrats given you? Besides some sense of entitlement to sit on your butt and collect a check every month. The Democrats praise you for making nothing of yourself, but tax the hell out of you and penalize you if you make something out of yourself. Does that sound right to you? Does a crack head, drunk, or sorry piece of crap deserve the same lifestyle as a doctor, lawyer, engineer, business owner that put their selves through school and did what they were supposed to? Give me a break with all that garbage that the Republicans were the ones that screwed you. The Democrats are doing the exact same things that you said you wouldn’t vote for. Grow a set and make something of yourself, instead of letting the government and hard working Americans pay for your laziness and keep your head just above water, while you step on the heads of others to keep you air coming.

Yeah, he is the right man to be leading this country. All I’ve seen is more debt, more unemployed, more foreclosures, and did I mention more debt, in his 18 months in the White House. Oh yeah, don’t let me forget about that small oil spill that is still gushing, ruining the lives of people all along the Gulf, and that’s making its way to my Panama City beach house as we speak. Stop bringing the “Racial” card into this. Or better yet for the people of all skin colors that want to base their “hate” on skin color, start your own blog because hating just because of a skin color makes the majority of us sick. No one brought up the “Race Card” when W was in office so let’s not start now because we have a president that is half black and half white.
The bottom line, no matter who posts what, is that Dems are going to back obama and the Repubs are going to blast him. And, by the way folks, this is all according to God’s design. I believe this country has had its chance and has blown it. When God has given nations in the past chance after chance and they continue to get worse, it usually means that God’s grace is about to give out on this country and we have but only ourselves to blame!

HBD,
You can not sit there and honestly propose that your job skills and advancement in this country has been a roller coaster ride based on the political powers in office. Maybe you should polish up your skills and hold a job for more than a political term. If you’re incapable of doing so, then that sounds like a personal problem, not a political party problem. If you want to believe that Republicans target you and fire you from a job when they are in power, then you sir are crazy, and there is no need in defending my claims. This country is the greatest place on Earth where anyone can make something of their selves no matter of their race, background, people in power, or anything, so it is very short sided of you to blame a political party for your ups and downs in life. And I have experienced a few ups and downs in my life as well, but don’t point the finger at the President, especially when the finger always ends up pointing back at me when the storm clears and I realize the real reason.

Dusty, I think Obama is reverse Quixotic; as we know, the man of La Mancha “lived a fool and died a sage…”, whereas Obama lived (campaigned) a sage, but is dying (politically) a fool. and how about the irony in the windmill metaphor; he isn’t attacking windmills, he’s encouraging Americans to build windmills to attack “climate change”.

HDB,
Economic Spiral? It’s people exactly like you that denounce George W. and call him the worst ever. It’s not his fault that you and others like yourself can’t hold jobs. Go ahead and blame him for all of your troubles, it’s exactly what Liberals do. You know, point the finger at someone else and divert any question that may hurt your stance on a topic. Yeah, the wars have cost this country, but Obama doubled the deficit in less than a year with something that hasn’t done a damn thing to help America’s situation. George W. lowered your taxes, and allowed you to keep more of your pay check, but I guess that point is moot since he was a Republican and you couldn’t find a job or hold one as you put it. Luckily Obama is a Democrat and you have companies beating down your door for you to be an employee of theirs in this hard economic time, right?

Contractor, I have long maintained there is little difference between Bush and Obama, save a few ideological trademarks. But let’s be honest about W. His “tax cuts” increased the deficit, which has not “helped” America. You issue him a hall pass on the wars; the cost of which was not added to the deficit until Obama took office. Ditto the TARP tab, which was opened within weeks of Obama’s election, and handed to him when he was sworn in. Make no mistake, Bush’s wars were a “stimulus package” for oil companies and defense contractors, just as TARP was a “stimulus” package for Wall Street, and very little of Obama’s “stimulus” fund ever filtered down to Main Street. This whole he said/she said nonsense reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine and Puddy are talking to the priest about heaven and hell and he considers their situation as says; “…it’s easy – you’re both going to hell.” I could care less if Obama is a Marxist, or a Muslim, or black, or white, or mixed-race. He campaigned on the promise of “transparency” in DC and a “change” to the status quo inside the Beltway. Any President’s policies are mere window dressing to keep his party’s base happy, but ALL presidents are beholden to special interests and not any base. Obama has failed to fulfill his state promise(s) and has lost his “vision”. I guess this makes him neither a “joke” or a “clown” but simply a failure. Bush, on the other hand, was a “success” in terms of funneling money – what some like to refer to as the “redistribution of wealth” – to his corporate benefactors, so in that regard he was a great president, if you accept he never really made any promises to the American people to begin with.

Since our experiences differ, you may not be able to understand my experiences. Administrations set the ENVIRONMENT for opportunity….and under Republicans, for me, that environment did not exist!! I have PERSONALLY been told that certain employment laws..i.e., Affirmative Action, equal opportuinty….would NOT be enforced under the Reagan Administration!! Unemployment periods were extended for upwards of TWO years…and that paradigm continued under Republican rule. When Democrats were in power, my salary almost quadrupled in a four-year period…working in private industry!! When 9/11 hit, my company (United Airlines) LAID OFF 25,000 people in a two-week period…and many of us have YET to recover from that!! Under Obama, I was able to return to the industry I loved being in….and that happened in LESS than six months!!
It doesn’t happen that way for everyone….but that’s what happened to me!!
To assume that I had no skill set is a mistake….for I was college educated and experienced.

Sick of Dems, you’re not a racist in my book. you’re “sick of democrats”. but get a grip. all you gloom and doom Obama-bashers keep yammering like chicken littles about all this “damage” he has done to the US. the 21st century US is damaged goods, and it has nothing to do with the ideologies democrats or republicans. it has to do with the naked greed and dishonesty that infects most Americans, be they conservative or liberal. well, let me back track, most of the truly (paleo) conservatives I know are neither greedy or dishonest. ditto my truly (is paleo-liberal a word?). they are neither, but the eschew the “I know what’s best for you because you’re a victim” approach to most neo-liberals. see my point? Bush was not a paleocon and Obama is not a paleolib. They’re both politicians, which makes them twin sons from different mothers. when you are born into wealth like Bush, do you actually think “ideology” matters? only if country clubs, boarding schools and the like have ideological roots? for neo-liberals political power is the currencey (think pimp/hooker), but for neo-conservatives it’s not about the color of the skin, but the color of money folks (think post-industrial robber baron). Herman Cain and Condi Rice? You might as well be a liberal citing Bruce Springsteen or Barbara Streisand as benchmarks of the liberal ethos

neo-Carlinist,
I know the episode you’re talking about, and it’s a good one. Puttey is a funny dude, ha ha. “Hey, you stole my Jesus fish”.
I can agree with you on what you said. I was still a tad young when George W ran for his first term, so I can’t recall exactly what his campaigning was like, but if you said he didn’t promise anything, then he is not held to anything is how I see it. NOW, I don’t see that as letting him off the hook to do what he wants and ruin America, but I think he gets a ‘B’ average from me as far as what he did in his tenure. I believe he was un-fairly criticized for 9/11, and then Katrina, so the flood gates were open for the war and everything else once people sank their teeth in. I just know Katrina was a natural disaster that no one could have stopped.
Obama like you said promised the world to everyone. Low class people were singing his praises thinking their mortgage was gonna get paid and that they were never have to worry about money ever again. He said he was bringing troops home, hasn’t happened, said the economy would flourish under his time, it has only sunken lower. I understand it’s not like a light switch, but I believe a year and a half is enough time to get the ball rolling. And personally, I absolutely hate his stance on immigration, and how he tries to put that in the very back of his agenda, unless it’s fighting to knock down a law he doesn’t see eye to eye with. He has forced Healthcare on this country.
Obviously you see how I feel about him, and I definitely respect the post that you directed towards me, cause it was civil, so thank you.

Affirmative action is a mistake in itself. You bark against the same people you claim that are against you, but you sit there and use your skin color to advance yourself to a level that you may not deserve. Don’t get me wrong, if you deserve it, then, you deserve all good things that come to you. But getting a job, admission to a college solely based on color is completely racist and shouldn’t be allowed in this country.
Your income quadrupled? How did that happen? So you’re saying that Republicans were using that money you weren’t making and giving it to something else, but the Democrats are just handing over more money to your industry to put in your pocket? You can not sit there and blame the Republicans because you were laid off, and were for two years. Did you ever think of going out and finding another job instead of sitting on your tail for two years? It’s a filthy lie if you tell me you continued to looked for work, and turned over every rock, looked in every nook and cranny, and couldn’t find anything for two years. Obama did not give you your job back, as much as you would like to think so.
“During President George W. Bush’s terms, which included a mild economic downturn in 2001, the unemployment rate actually averaged 5.53 percent, which compares very favorably with the average since Harry Truman’s second term in 1948 of 5.67 percent.”
Guess those were hard times for you and others like you huh, full-employment.

HBD,
Your symptomatic of what’s wrong with Dem voters. You think your fortunes in life are all tied to powers beyond your control and especially to what part is in power. That is incredibly shortsighted. Its hard to fathom someone being unemployed for 2 whole years just because a different party is in power. Its absurd in fact. George Bush doesn’t sit up there with levers or buttons that he pushes that automatically push black employment numbers up or down. The idea in and of itself is preposterous that you can’t get a job because Bush was president. Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds?
Are you going to sit there with a straight face and tell me that people from 3,000 miles away in Honduras who don’t even speak our language can travel 3,000 miles, get a job, make enough money to support themselves, and make enough money to support a family back in Honduras? And you can’t?

So I think most conservatives like me have had about enough of the Fox News tea-party paranoia and thinks its scaring people away. People have wised up to the fear spread around by the gun shops that Obama was taken over everything.
2 years later, he’s supported the military, put more money for road construction, and cut taxes. AND I still have my weapons (plus a little more ammo). Don’t know ’bout you, but everyone I’m talking to thinks this whole “Obama is like hitler thing” is a false alarm.
