David Jungerman is a 72-year-old Missouri farmer — a rather cantankerous 72-year old Missouri farmer. Not long ago, he hired someone to paint a pithy message on the side of an old trailer.
“Are you a producer or parasite,” the sign reads. “Democrats — party of parasites.”
Then Jungerman planted the trailer on his property along U.S. 71 south of Kansas City, where thousands could see it every day, because he wanted to protest those who “always have their hand out for whatever the government will give them.”
Some didn’t like it. At least one jerk didn’t like it a lot, and tried to burn it down. Twice. Local Democratic leaders have condemned the attempted arson.
But as it turns out, this stalwart champion of personal independence, this stubborn opponent of government handouts, has himself sought out and received federal handouts. And not just a little. Since 1995, the Kansas City Star reports, Jungerman has collected more than $1 million in federal farm subsidies. He of course claims that his case is different. It’s just his own tax money coming back to him, you see?
And now you know … the rest of the story. Good day!

“The problem is that they’ve worked themselves into an ideological corner where any debate, discussion, or willingness to work with democrats to sponsor ANYTHING is seen as traitorous.”
Now that is the kettle calling the pot black! However the socialist want a government like Europe and the conservatives want the government founded by our forefathers. The democrats have allowed the liberal socialist to control their party. That means government of the few control the many. Rich liberals will attain freedome for themselves then kick the freedom shut behind them but put a carrot on a stick to maintain control. That is socialism. It is traitorous.

Jay,
“The biggest obstacle to that change are the farmers whom you depict as unhappy captives of the system.”
Wrong.
The biggest obstacles are the politicians who continue to pass the laws that enable this system. Farmers are less than 3% of the electorate.

The Democrat’s (and Jay Bookman’s) idea of GOP hypocrisy is when a Republican wants to collect Social Security and Medicare after paying into those systems for a lifetime.
If someone pays into a system for 50 years, is is NOT hypocrisy to collect a pittance of what was paid in.
Farm subsidies are a sticky subject. While there is a LOT of pork in subsidies … and this guy might be getting some of it… at least they go to stabilize the food supply (and thus, society). I, frankly , don’t know how they can run that system and guarantee zero pork and a stable food supply.

Aren’t you doing exactly what you criticize me doing? And it’s not helping either way. Just because we elected a black democrat to the Oval Office, it’s now a socialist revolution. Thanks for proving my point- you guys point fingers, call names, and have yet to produce one sensible solution to a single problem in this country. The endless squawking about socialism and “big government” isn’t presenting any sensible legislation that actually address a problem. And prove how government has EVER shrunk when a conservative held the White House. They lower taxes for a while, and increase deficits in the process because they never do away with anything. What administration has done away with a federal department or post? None I can remember on either side of political fence.

Yeah…but sadly…there are many “students” who can’t even name their OWN father…let alone our founding ones.
Thanks for your answer… I agree with it except that UNIONS are to blame. Other states have teacher’s unions…and STILL they produce better students. Yes…we have some very good schools in GA… but the MAJORITY of them suck. Can we not “emulate” a “better” school system? Send those in charge of education to LEARN THEMSELVES what other successful districts around the nation do to produce a successful student? Heck…all they need to do is examine the successful one’s HERE and do what they can to emulate them.
Yet all I ever see are those standing on a podium seeking our votes… those who PROMISE a better education for the children in GA…and not one has come through in the years I’ve been here. Sad.

Well, I’ve been away trying to follow @@’s instructions and all I can say is it’s certainly difficult to GFY.
Anyway, my advice re: Georgia education measurement is not to follow the test scores too closely, particularly the SAT. The comparisons are completely unfair. Georgia tests everybody, regardless of vocational intent. Other states held up as models of educational attainment test only those in college preparatory tracks. So you let me test only my best students while you test every student. Let’s see how we compare.
I don’t defend grade inflation and the Hope program that spurs it. Many of our students shouldn’t even be applying for college. I’ve taught a lot of those students in a college setting, and believe me, the low level of preparation for college studies is jaw-dropping.
At the same time, I’m not ready to assert that Georgia is at the bottom of educational achievement on the basis of published test scores. Surely, we have some teachers who need to find other occupations. Most, however, are dedicated, but they’re expected to teach children without any parental support or even without real government support. We’re subscribing to the WalMart philosophy of education: “Here he is, Teach. Pour the knowledge in.” From my personal observation, a few supposedly educated people on this blog could use another dunkin’.

Private sector: “If someone pays into a system for 50 years, is is NOT hypocrisy to collect a pittance of what was paid in. ” Social Security was never intended as a savings account. You and I are paying for current retirees. Our kids will pay for us. It’s not about drawing out part of what you’ve paid in since you’re not paying now for your future retirement. You’re paying now for the current recipients.
It’s humane, perhaps even noble, for a nation to care for its indigent and elderly. I can’t imagine NOT doing it. But if one accepts such sweeping statements about those receiving government “handouts”, then any program, entitlement or otherwise, becomes questionable.

TRUE!….but actually the MAJORITY of the fruit and vegetables sold in our Krogers and Publix come from other nations…those same ones that use pesticides and practices that were banned here in our nation many years ago…but you forgot one thing..MANY of that produce is “produced” by American Corporations that own the land and pay slave wages in those other lands… that USE the very chemicals that are banned here…and either way…ALL of it is BOUGHT by American Corporations that import it and distribute it. We import WAY more fruit then we grow here…all one needs to do is look at the labels which state WHERE it was grown.
Oh I”m SURE someone will blame this on the liberals. I actually blame BOTH parties…most of all the FDA. Sure…we grow food here…lots and lots of FrankenFood. Yet I suspect that many just don’t care WHERE something was grown when they purchase it. Let alone the wasted OIL and resources it took to ship that same produce here from thousands of miles away. No…I’m not talking about things “exotic” that don’t grow here… I mean…why do we buy ORANGES from South America when we grow them here? Why do we import so many apples? Just look at the “concentrate” Apple Juice sold in most stores and see where they purchased their apples from… and we here? While using much of what we grow…can we NOT offset it by the amount of apples we EXPORT? It truly makes no sense… none at all.

Jay – of course farmers will fight change with every bit of their power. They are afraid. They don’t like the current system, but the devil you know is better than the one you don’t! I am a rural guy that lives in an area surrounded by farmland. I know these farmers personally. To a man they are all conservative republicans, but each and every one of them takes advantage of the farm subsidy system. They do this out of fear. We aren’t talking about big-city folks that work in IT and can easily move all of their assets from one city to the next in search of a better job opportunity. These are people whose ENTIRE livelihood is tied up in land and farm equipment that is worth millions of dollars. If that business fails, they lose everything.
But none of these folks (even the big farmers in the area) live like kings. Their homes and vehicles are probably less expensive than the vast majority of the people on this blog. Their assets are substantially more than ours, but those assets are used as collateral to take out huge loans that are necessary for the farmer to buy the supplies he needs to plant his crops. They work longer, harder hours than most of us, and they risks they take each year are substantial.
So call them hypocrites if you wish, just try not to do it with a mouthful of food.

If there was too much corn, then the price of corn goes down, which would mean, less tax money generated for our big brother… This is why they give our farmers these subsidies, to control thier tax revenue..
So what if he received them from our government, the government created the laws, he is just following them, but he also is producing something of substance… instead of sitting at home and not working because of a monthly income provided by our government for nothing!! So let me ask you this…why not let them EXPORT their excess crops? I mean…we IMPORT many and much of our own produce…and I know we export…but with all the starving people in the world…and those that can’t grow what WE can here…why not export it instead of paying the BIGGEST Corporate Owned farms? Lance: the subsidies were originally created to help keep farmers from losing their farms to the banks. I remember when that was a huge problem and the big corporately owned farms were taking over family businesses. Nobody wants to go back to that, I’m sure. Farmers rarely live the high life. I’ve known many myself over the years. But, as with any system, there are those who take every penny of the subsidy they can get who aren’t really trying to do any better. They are certainly no worse than anyone else in a government money program and give the whole program a tainted image. Same thing with any “subsidy” or “entitlement” program out there. Some use it to better themselves or as a temporary bridge to better, and some use it for the free handout as long as possible.

How many people who share this man’s strength of view are living on “disability” checks? Rural southern states have two to three times the rate of participation in SSDI and SSI as do states like, say, Colorado. (And yes, SSI is means-tested and can be distributed to individuals who have not paid into Social Security).
Being “on disability” is an acceptable way of life in some communities (I’m related to some of these people). And they talk about it freely because it’s not “welfare”. But it IS a government handout, just from a different program that tries to address the same problem: grinding poverty.
Disability disproportionately affects the very poor. Factors such as lack of adequate medical care, prenatal care, and education, along with poor nutrition, substandard housing, dangerous jobs, etc. lead to chronic health conditions, accidents, and birth defects that are often preventable. This has been known for a long time, and is true globally.
To some in this country it’s totally acceptable to live on the dole when the cumulative effects of a life of poverty have caused bodily harm. But to try to prevent this from occuring in the first place is socialist anathema.

Typical BS.
Skimming 15.3% off of a worker’s total compensation pretty much prohibits most people from saving the amount that they SHOULD be saving for their own retirement. This forced “contribution” during working years results in forced dependency for that same worker on the government in retirement. Thus, the Democrats force a “contribution” from all workers to pay for someone else’s retirement, and then call those same workers (if they are Republican) “hypocrites” if they accept Social Security and Medicare in retirement (Which they do because they don’t have enough left over after the forced contribution to save for their own retirements). Nice.
I make a decent wage, but I don’t have 15% to contribute to someone else’s retirement (SS and Medicare payroll taxes) AND 15% to contribute to my own. Thus, I am a hypocrite because I will need Social Security because the government has crippled my ability to provide for myself.

Maybe technically, but I’m over 65 and I regard my United Healthcare insurance as my primary policy, not the Medicare I pay for. Maybe I look at it that way because my doctor no longer takes Medicare. The government can cut Medicare reimbursements only so much before doctors start rejecting Medicare, and that trend is increasing. I hold onto Medicare only because once you drop it, signing up for it again is prohibitively expensive because of the penalty involved. For now, Medicare for me is just a card I carry in my wallet. The $96 per month is still less expensive than the future cost of signing up for it again if that became necessary. It’s a ridiculous situation when the government makes Medicare so unattractive to many doctors that it’s rejected as a form of payment.

1. Wrong. The prevaliing will of a majority of the people of this country is the reason Blacks are no longer in slavery. Slaves were emancipated by “big government” proclamation long before the will of the people prevailed and they were physically released from the bonds of slavery.
2. Wrong. People fight wars. The war and the people may be managed/conducted by big government, but the government doesn’t fight the wars, people do. If everyone involved stopped fighting there wouldn’t be any war; this actually happens at times.
3. Wrong. These people are or were not dictators. Our “Big government” is a creation of the American people through constitutional processes.
Look, the blame for our big government ills lies stricly on the backs of voters. Voters can fix the problems; they [up to this point] lack the will. If we aren’t diligent we may all too soon lack the means, even if the will exists.

” bet the same rednecks living “on disability” listen to Glenn Beck and think Sarah Palin is the second coming, and don’t remotely see conflict in this.”
If they listen to Beck and Palin then they are really disabled. Do you have a problem with ADA? You helped millions receive money and put employers through great expense.

Well, I’ve been away trying to follow @@’s instructions and all I can say is it’s certainly difficult to GFY.
Where did I tell you to GFY? I told you to KMA (kiss my ass) for helping out two families in need AND the economy. Turns out it didn’t, in fact, help the economy, but then…that’s what we get for believing Obama.

Dear Mr. Bookman,
So do you propose ending all farm subsidies? I’m sure the farmers and consumers of food (uh, that’s everyone) would like to know the effects of that.
Do you believe farm subsidies are ‘handouts’ as you imply?

private sector: what would you suggest we do, enact the death panels and throw Grandma out with the trash? Social Security is supported by both sides of the political fence as a means of taking care of those who can’t take care of themselves. It’s not, nor ever was intended to be like your retirement plan or 401K. The reason most people don’t save is because they try to live beyond their means. And FYI, SS tax is only about 6% of your pay. Check your paystub, it’s called FICA. I love my parents dearly, but I’m glad I don’t have to foot the bill for their retirement years. The medical costs alone would bankrupt me!
Some of the rest of the taxes we pay are what bothers most people. But, let’s face it, without some type of government to argue about, we wouldn’t have the country we have. And we all hope it will be there when we need it- look at the current outcry over government taking over, and footing the bill for, the oil rig mess BP caused. You can’t have a government that is absent from all things except what we want them for. It needs improvement, no doubt about it!

williebkind – I do not have a problem with the general premise of ADA. And as I said in my first posting, I believe that disability benefits (and accommodations) are warranted in a great many cases.
However, what I’m trying to point out is the hypocrisy (tying back to Jay’s original article). There is a segment of our southern population that is contemptuous toward “those people” who receive welfare, while they themselves are living off SSI for various reasons and not thinking of it as a handout. Or even if they themselves are not “on disability” they have no problems with the others in their community living that way due to their nerves, or heart, or what have you. (These folks are usually poor and rural and NOT minority).

(June 24) — More Americans now believe the country is moving in the wrong direction, and fewer approve of President Barack Obama’s performance than at any time since he took office, in the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.
Obama’s approval rating has fallen to 45 percent, compared with 48 percent disapproval. And 62 percent of the 1,000 adults surveyed in recent days said the U.S. is on the wrong track, up from 56 percent last month.

These old farts sit around listening to Neal Boortz and Rush Limbaugh all day and then go out and spread that horse manure around like it’s freakin’ peanut butter. Face it, entitlements are fifty percent of the federal budget. They go to the rich and the poor.
Find something else to get torqued about, like $10 billion a month for wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

That is just the amount that shows up on your paycheck, dumbazz. If you were ever self employed, you would realize that what you pay is 12.4%. What you don’t realize when you are employed by someone else is that you STILL pay it. The government , realizing that if people actually knew how much they were taking then there would be a revolt, forced employers to show only half the amount taken. That is money that you would get if you were getting all of your paycheck like if you were self employed. And the deception worked… it duped YOU, dumbazz

Let’s help you libs out a little, this man is CORRECT when only 50% of the people in this welfare laden country work and one of them gets taxpayer money back they are getting their tax money back. When one of you free loaders refuse to work or pay taxes but rather live off your monthly check–WHEN YOU ARE CAPABLE OF WORKING- you are getting the money that the government took from those that do work ! and that is what you are, a parasite ! look you the definition or do you need the government to guy you a dictionary ?
