A self-made man of independence takes his stand

trailier_me_061810_06-20-2010_PQ1G0VO1.embedded.prod_affiliate.81

David Jungerman is a 72-year-old Missouri farmer — a rather cantankerous 72-year old Missouri farmer. Not long ago, he hired someone to paint a pithy message on the side of an old trailer.

“Are you a producer or parasite,” the sign reads. “Democrats — party of parasites.”

Then Jungerman planted the trailer on his property along U.S. 71 south of Kansas City, where thousands could see it every day, because he wanted to protest those who “always have their hand out for whatever the government will give them.”

Some didn’t like it. At least one jerk didn’t like it a lot, and tried to burn it down. Twice. Local Democratic leaders have condemned the attempted arson.

But as it turns out, this stalwart champion of personal independence, this stubborn opponent of government handouts, has himself sought out and received federal handouts. And not just a little. Since 1995, the Kansas City Star reports, Jungerman has collected more than $1 million in federal farm subsidies. He of course claims that his case is different. It’s just his own tax money coming back to him, you see?

And now you know … the rest of the story. Good day!

If the government wants to give out free money, then even a libertarian is going to take it. Why? Because otherwise they would be at a competitive disadvantage to everyone else.

What solves the problem is to stop giving out free money to people. Simple concept, hard for the left to understand.

You know how lots of states are depending on the Federal Government to close their revenue gaps? Why not just lower Federal taxes so there is room for the states to raise a bit, and then we don’t have to do this silly transfer thing. I’d rather my tax dollars go to a more local government that is responsive to the needs of myself and my neighbors.

Well, he got that right. Librul Democrats are like tapeworms. They suck up everything we produce and leave us Producers to barely get by. I’m glad he could get his message across. At least he’s luckier than my buddy Joe Bill was. Old Joe Bill’s got a big barn by the road running by his farm. He painted it black and then put in big white letters “Democrats Such Big Ones.” Anyhow, the cops come and made him paint it over. Said there was a law against it. The same one that made Joe Bill tear off the bumper sticker on his truck that said “S— Happens.”

You can make all the fun you want, but the guy from Missouri’s got a point. We need more self-made men. I’m proud to be self-made. I never spent but five grades in the guvmint school. And my Daddy paid taxes to build the road that run by our place. And he also paid taxes to pay for the police and fire department and all that stuff. And when I left the 5th grade in my senior year, I never went to work in no guvmint job. No sirree, I went right out into Private Innerprize. And I worked and worked to move from farming to hanging sheetrock to the success I got today as a beer truck driver. I earned every penny of my Social Security and Medicare and the guvmint better keep its hands off of both.

So I can’t hardly wait till November when us hard-working people Take Our Country Back. We’ll cut out all the handouts and welfare and this Affirmative Action stuff and gay rights and all that stuff.

Don’t get me started. I’m just going to cut myself off now and get back to work so guvmint can steal everything I make and give it to a bunch of shiftless bums. Have a good day everybody.

So what makes this guy think he’s entitled to a refund of taxes he’s paid? Even if he has paid over a million. Is everybody entitled to a refund?

People can sure come up with some convoluted explanations to justify inconsistencies in their behavior. Especially when they condemn it in others.

As far as all the other posts about the level of farm subsidies, paying people who aren’t farmers, etc. Democrats have had a year and a half to even introduce legislation to stop this. Problem is, influential Dems support it. Along with influential Reps. Isn’t what many of us thought they meant by ‘bipartisanship.’

Larger issue: shows why making actual cuts or ending some programs is going to be so difficult. But if it’s too difficult for the current members, voters’ll take a chance on someone else.

LHU

I believe what many are concerned with is the cut in their old-age benefits while others make no sacrifice, in order to pay for benefits for middle and upper middle income people. Remember the half a trillion in medicare cuts? Even backing out Advantage it was quite a bit. Some said it was scare tactics – but Dems have allowed a 21 percent reduction in medical reimbursements to take effect for them – and for vets, too.

Paul, you’re right, it is a bipartisan problem. One of the biggest defenders of farm handouts is Saxby Chambliss, Republican of Georgia, who fights reform at every chance.

And Union, I don’t believe it. A handful of crops — peanut, cotton and tobacco, for instance — require allotments to grow and sell, but that in itself is a much-abused form of subsidy that the feds have tried to banish and the farmers have insisted remain. But that’s about it.

Or to put it another way, the government made available to Mr.Jungerman, subsidies, and he took full advantage of them.

How ’bout THIS ONE?

A Treasury Department inspector general reports that 4,608 people have claimed the homebuyer tax credit even though their home is a government prison. Some of them could have been filing jointly with spouses eligible for the credit, but more than 700 not only didn’t file jointly but were serving life sentences!

Of those returns from single-filing lifers, 174 were filed by paid, professional tax preparers. So again the middlemen are aiding and abetting.

Some other choice tidbits from the IG’s report, which you can read in whole here.

– Florida prisoners seem to have been especially diligent about defrauding the government. More than half the inmates who got the credit and are serving life sentences were in Florida.

– Many of the fraudulent inmate returns slipped past screens set up by the IRS that were supposed to catch them. IRS employees also failed to follow up on other signs of fraud in numerous returns, the IG said.

– More than 80 IRS employees claimed the credit even though they don’t seem to have bought a house in the required time period.

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/business/hancock/blog/2010/06/the_mortgage_disaster_was_the.html

According to Breitbart, 1,300 prison inmates wrongly received more than $9 Million in homebuyer tax credits.

You know, when I first read Jay’s take on this, I said, “Wow! Jay might actually have made a cogent point today”.

Then, reality set in.

With very little research, I noticed the telling difference between two stories – one by a newspaper (the Kansas City Star), and one by a columnist for something not resembling a newspaper (Jay and the AJC).

Here is the paragraph from the REAL newspaper (the one which reports the WHOLE story):

“Jungerman said he put up the sign to protest people who pay no taxes, but, “Always have their hand out for whatever the government will give them” in social programs.”

And here’s Jay’s justification for vilifying Mr Jungerman:

“Then Jungerman planted the trailer on his property along U.S. 71 south of Kansas City, where thousands could see it every day, because he wanted to protest those who “always have their hand out for whatever the government will give them.”

Does the reading comprehension-challenged see the difference in the basic thrust of these stories?

The REAL newspaper tells what appears to be the whole story, citing Mr. Jungerman’s opposition to those who do not pay ANY taxes, yet receive handouts, while the pseudo newspaper omits this primary point entirely in order to tell a story that now has a completely new meaning.

Now, some will mistakenly come to a conclusion that I am supporting Mr. Jungerman’s use of tax dollars, and as usual, you would be wrong. I do not support farm subsidies of any kind. However, I suspect that if he has received an average of $66,000 in Federal subsidies per year for 15 years, he’s likely paying far more than that in taxes each year.

And of course, that makes the REAL newspaper’s story much more accurate, and not a cheap shot at someone from the pseudo-newspaper columnist who finds it necessary to omit the salient point of the story to make his weak point even remotely valid.
