McChrystal ousted, replaced by Petraeus

President Obama dismissed Gen. McChrystal today.

“I welcome debate among my team, but I won’t tolerate division,” Obama said, noting the strict code of conduct required of our military. “The strength and greatness of our military is rooted in the fact that this code applies equally to newly enlisted privates and to general officer who command them.” He stressed the importance of the chain of command “and respect for civilian control over that chain of command.”

McChrystal, who met the president briefly this morning, released a statement confirming his resignation and reiterating his support for U.S. policy in Afghanistan.

Obama replaced McChrystal with Gen. David Petraeus. His standing and reputation should reassure leaders in Afghanistan and in NATO capitols while minimizing the chaos inevitable in a change of command.

Given the circumstances, the situation has been handled about as well and as swiftly as possible.

I never thought of this consequence:

Forget about all the members of Congress who are supposedly about to suffer from “Obamacare” blowback in the mid-term elections. Forget about the deficit, the bureaucracy, and any other critiques you might have heard about President Barack Obama’s health-care reform passed earlier this year. There’s a far bigger consequence looming abroad: U.S. health-care reform will exact an excruciating cost on the developing world. Here’s why: Tens of thousands of doctors are about to leave their home countries — where they are often desperately needed — to come to the United States to meet America’s growing demand.

Your 6:51 indicates the Gen. McKhrystal made disparaging remarks about the President.

Sorry, the Vice President, The Abm. to Afghanistan, Special Middle East envoy and the Pentagon hierachy was included. If you read the UCMJ, he clearly violated what an officer can publically say about other officers and civilian leadership.

Being a military man, you should know the chain of command and unit cohesion is paramount.
It does not matter if Gen. McKhrstal voted for President Obama or not, he violated the terms of the UCMJ. Secondly, the man is a 4-star and West Point graduate, therefore, he is aware of the terms and conditions by which ALL members of the military are required to operate.

No, Jackie, you are incorrect. Again. First, I stated that McChrystal DIDN’T make any disparaging remarks against Hope & Change, but only one remark directly attributed to him was against Holbrooke.

ALL other remarks were attributed to aides or subordinates.

Now, for me, making the remark about Holbrooke doesn’t even come close to violating the UCMJ, as ambassadors are not in the chain of command, and especially if it was true.

They could have tried to fire him, and had a real war on their hands they could never win (because McChrystal actually knows how to fight), of they could accept his resignation. It was the best solution to this, and as Dennis Miller pointed out tonight, McChrystal will never have to buy a beer or a round of golf for himself the rest of his life.

Where?

It’s interesting. When I was living in Jackson, I knew that two of my great grandfathers were in the Siege there. When I moved away from home, my first apartment was, for lack of a better word, haunted. There was always just the strangest feeling. Years later when I was digging around, I found out that it was right on the battle lines and that one of the great-grandfathers had been wounded there. Perhaps, even, on the very spot…the same two were in the Battle of Peachtree Creek and, some days when I am out strolling about the neighborhood, from out of nowhere there comes again that “feeling.”

It’s similar to what I feel when I’m in New Orleans…a feeling of connectedness to the very cobblestones…to look at a building and know that, so many generations ago, that which made me walked these streets, looked out of that balcony there…

Capt Cleland was a member of the 1st Cav Division. He dropped a “frag” when he was exiting from the Huey. Instead of killing others and possibly bring down the helicopter, he fell on the granade himself.

For Sen. Chambliss to call this man “unpatriotic” and morphed his picture to that of Osama Bin Laden is truly a sad commentary. Sen. Chambliss was able to get a deferment because of “bad knees” while others went to war. In celebrating his victory, he had the Confederate flag on stag and said to his audience, “we have taken our government back from them.”

And that is the point, the insistence that the natives change to be like the immigrant. Woodrow Wilson once said that “the South is the only place where nothing has to be explained to me.” Our detractor cannot grasp that “those people” he feels so superior to are “my” people and that I am connected with them in a fashion that transcends race, creed or color and that an attack on them is an attack on me.

And, I believe, that is why there exists such an antipathy toward Southerners, it is a jealousy of that sense of belonging.

Union – “he turned in his resignation”

 and I’ll bet you think people leave their positions to spend more time with their family, too.

he “was resigned”, as the saying goes …

“McChrystal, on the morning of his firing, made it apparent that he still didn’t understand the gravity of his offense. Arriving at the Pentagon, he was asked by NBC News whether he had offered his resignation. “Come on, you know better than that. No!” he replied. ”

Dawg Dad, you obviously never served in the military or if you did, you kept out of trouble and never had to deal with the UCMJ but… Trust me… I was a legal officer and a Commanding Officer and what General McChystal said and did was definitely insubordination. He had to go on that principle alone despite the fact that PRESBO isn’t up to the task.
