Joe Sestak lets loose GOP impeachment fantasies

U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, the underdog who beat Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senate primary, says he turned down a nice job offer by the Obama administration that would have kept him from challenging Specter.

That news has Washington Republicans all up in arms, outraged at such blatantly criminal and unethical behavior at the highest levels of American government.

Well. Kinda sorta. They are at least going through the motions of pretending to believe it’s an outrage, including calling for appointment of a special prosecutor and uttering that magic word they do love so well: “Impeachable.”

It just sounds so juicy and full of promise, doesn’t it? “Impeachable.” Certain mouths begin to water at the prospect.

But it’s laughable, and Republicans in Washington know it. You can see it in their body language and hear it in their voices, even as they profess to be appalled. These are people who can look the camera in the eye and tell you with a straight face that the sun will rise in the West tomorrow, but even they can’t work up much feigned anger at this.

Nor can the experts. Listen to Melanie Sloan, the head of CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics):

“There has never been a prosecution based on such facts and I find it impossible to believe there would be. I think this is really just politics as usual. Parties routinely do what they can to clear the field for preferred candidates.”

Listen to Richard Painter, chief ethics officer under the last President Bush, who says this “is nothing new and it hardly rises to the level of a major ethics controversy”:

Congress gives us plenty of genuine ethics concerns to worry about – particularly the role of campaign contributions which are de facto “bribes” (watch carefully what happens to the banking reform bill when it goes to House-Senate conference). Voters should not be distracted by media generated sideshows having little to do with what goes on in Washington.

Listen to Peter Zeidenberg, a former federal prosecutor with the Justice Department’s Public Integrity unit:

“Talk about criminalizing the political process! It would be horrible precedent if what really truly is political horsetrading were viewed in the criminal context of: is this a corrupt bribe?”

On the other side, of course, are such legal giants as Dick Morris, Sean Hannity and Karl Rove (who I see described on one conservative blog as “Carl Rove, who was George Bush’s legal adviser…).

If the White House had offered Sestak a job so that he would vote a certain way on a bill, or to buy his silence about an illegal or unethical act, this would have legs. But it’s nothing like that, and Washington Republicans know it. They also know that every administration since George Washington has tried to arrange the political landscape to its liking in exactly this manner. You’ve got a lot of people with ambition and talent jostling in Washington for position, and the folks at the top, at the White House, have always tried to stage-manage the process to protect their best interests. The same is true of every governor’s office in the country and in many a mayoral office as well.

What you’re seeing is the national GOP playacting — and playacting pretty poorly, with no heart in the performance — just to get the folks back home stirred up and full of hope.

Curiously, in a supposed anti-incumbent year, most of the departing are not retiring but seeking higher office. We may recycle more than we replace. The bad news is that a frustrating 114 seats still have but one contestant. Two of them aren’t even incumbents, meaning they will affect state policy without being vetted by voters. And I have to think that we’d be better off if many had run instead for the Legislature — and cut down on the number running unopposed. Georgia’s problems are numerous. They aren’t going away. There’s too much stale thinking at the Capitol, on both sides of the aisle. New voices would be welcome.

Ooohhhhh, I see how this plays out now….it’s only AFTER the “FACT(S)” or lack thereof, that the status quo becomes justifiable/acceptable to dems?

“This isn’t “change”; it’s sanctification of the status quo.”–Barack Obama

Got it!

I will say this…if the administration is reluctant to come forth with the details, it’s because they know THE PEOPLE would not approve. Quid pro quo? Status quo? No difference! Some of us, at least, have grown a bit tired of it.

Obviously not you, jay. Both are NOW acceptable.

I do luv, Joe, though. He never changes.

Thanks to the $787 billion stimulus package, Biden said he and Melody Barnes, White House Domestic Policy Council director, have talked at length about ways to “generate new ideas about how to deal with future employment needs,” Biden said. “We have new ideas about how to spend government money wisely.”

First off, it’s not government’s money. Second? Politicians require $787 billion before they can come up with new ideas??? Do tell.

That’s a helluva a raise to support the status quo.

I think it is wrong for impeachment speculation while Obama is on vacation. It’s been almost a month since his last one. Hopefully, he’ll be able to get a round of golf in.
Give the man some peace, please. He’s been so busy…saving Nashville, TN from the floods, saving S. Korea from N. Korea, plugging that darn hole in the gulf. I mean deadgum, he’s going down for the 2nd time in 6 weeks tomorrow.
All of this on the heels of saving our economy from 8% unemployment and solving the borders immigration problems.

“OFF TOPIC #1)

To my Conservative friends out there …….. research project:

“Supposedly (repeat supposedly) the West Point graduation ceremony last week was opened to the general public for the first time in 100 years. Obviously, is this is true it was because the Obama staff wanted to saturate the audience with people who would provide some “enthusiastic” as opposed to “tepid” applause during his remarks.

If any of you can help me verify that one way or the other I would most appreciate it.

In addition, I have the entire tape of the graduation event and by the weekend hope to review every cadet (1,010) who received a diploma to determine if “any” did not shake the president’s hand. That part takes about an hour.

Stay tuned.

Øbungle can’t be impeached because he’s not POTUS. He is an illegal alien illegally occupying the CEO. He should be arrested, drug from The White House in chains, charged with illegally entering the country, embezzlement of public funds, perjury, suborning perjury, misprision of a felony, and marrying a transvestite. After serving a length prison sentence he should be deported as an undesirable and illegal alien. This would be justice but it won’t happen because we are a nation of sheep. Have a nice day.

Just goes to show the intrinsic stupidity of the democrats. This isn’t about impeaching Obama, although who knows what might happen down the road with this fool in the office, it’s about defeating Joe Sestak. Sestak has been given a “poker call” even by members of his own party. He’s looking like an idiot for making accusations and then not having what it takes to back up his words.

“If the White House had offered Sestak a job so that he would vote a certain way on a bill, . . . this would have legs”

Yet, you completely and totally dismissed the issue of the Colorado congressman’s brother being nominated for a judgeship he was clearly not qualified for in exchange for that congressman’s vote on health care reform, Jay.

Don’t you just hate it when you aren’t consistent?

I was wrong in thinking it would take a while for you to comment on this issue, but am surprised you actually try to rationalize it away. Especially your “Axelrod says there was nothing to this” defense which then leads to the conclusion that SOMEONE is lying. So you either have an illegal act perpetrated by the White House and they are lying about it, or you have a sitting congressman and candidate for Senate who is lying.

And it is just another “Ignore that man behind the curtain” day in Bookman-land.

There is nothing I’d like better than to see Obama out of office. But the thought of impeaching the first black president on anything other than blantantly criminal behavior is not a prospect I would relish. More than anything, what this episode proves, if true, is that Obama is nothing but a rank politician and all the talk of “transparency,” “hope” and “change you can believe in” is just so much hooey. But is anyone really shocked by that?

Zedd: you are spot on with the legal citations, however the bigger question is who in this country determines what illegal things are “really important”. I am constantly amazed that there is someone obviously out there, who determines what illegalities are serious enough to be bothered with. We know illegal immigration has been determined to be ok, bribes given to congressman and Senators are not “really illegal”, illegal campaign contributions given by some groups are “ok”, whereas from other groups are serious violations. If we are not going to enforce these laws or repeal them, can we vote on who decides which one gets enforced.

Sad, tragic, but true——————————A real disappointment. On Topic———————-

From Don Emmerich–

“Had McCain-Palin won the election, we’d still have a viable antiwar movement, not just Cindy Sheehan and her ragtag gang.[5] We’d still have millions of Americans decrying the wars in the Middle East and the nation’s abandonment of the rule of law. But Obama has managed to silence all but a handful of these critics. The moment he gave his victory speech in Grant Park, those who’d spent the previous eight years protesting the policies of the Bush-Cheney regime decided that the fight was over. They suddenly became apologists for executive power and in no time at all could be found defending their man’s broken campaign promises.

So I hope we’ve all learned our lesson. Some of you, I’m happy to see, have concluded that they’re all a bunch of crooks and have completely abandoned faith in the American political system. Others continue hoping—in my opinion, hoping against hope. Well, fine, that’s your right.”

Never settle for evil. Lessor or otherwise.

Well, use to be bribes was pretty simple. A guy offered you a pint of booze if you voted for a guy. So you went in an voted and picked up your pint on the way out. Then they kilt that off by making the liquor stores close on election day. So not only can’t you have a stiff gulp on Sunday after a boring sermon but you can’t have one on election day when you find out who’s going to be sticking it to you for the next two years.

And now the bribes got all fancy and you can’t hardly tell what’s a bribe and what’s not. Let’s just get back to booze as a bribe. It’ll never do you wrong. And you can even take a picture of it as proof.

I googled “Obama at the West Point commencement ceremony” and found a video of him giving his speech. The applause was tepid and panning out to the cadets it showed many not even clapping. Yesterday or today the top uniformed officers in the military wrote letters disagreeing with congress for plans to prematurely vote on repealing DADT. Conway and Casey were very vocal. Obama and the far left democrats don’t have many friends in the military.

Oil Spill, what oil spill asked Obama?

Could this be Mr. Obama’s Katrina? It could be even worse. The federal response to Katrina was governed by the 1988 Stafford Act, which says that in natural disasters on-shore states are in charge, not Washington. The federal obligation is to “support . . . State and local assistance efforts” by providing whatever resources a governor requests and then writing big checks for the cleanup. Mr. Bush had to deal with a Louisiana governor and a New Orleans mayor who were, by federal law, in charge.

But BP’s well was drilled in federal waters. Washington, not Louisiana, is in charge. This is Mr. Obama’s responsibility. He says his administration has been prepared for the worst from the start. Mr. Obama’s failure to lead in cleaning up the spill could lead voters to echo his complaint in Katrina’s aftermath: “I wish that the federal government had been up to the task.”

First of all, Dave R., the congressman in question is from Utah, not Colorado.

Second, the nominee you claim is clearly unqualified is Scott Matheson, former U.S. attorney, law degree from Yale, former Rhodes scholar, former dean of the University of Utah law school. Orrin Hatch has agreed to help shepherd his nomination through the Senate, that’s how unqualified he is and how partisan this nomination is.

“It should be crystal clear that Scott Matheson is eminently qualified, and I applaud the president for appointing him,” Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah told the Salt Lake Tribune. “The timing, I can see why it raises eyebrows. [But] I find it hard to believe. I see no evidence” of vote buying.

And if you want to go the “but Matheson never served as a judge” route, neither had John Roberts, Antony Scalia or Clarence Thomas when appointed to the appellate court.

Third, Rep. Jim Matheson voted AGAINST the health-care reform bill, and his brother’s nomination remains in effect.

Other than those points, you’re absolutely correct.

And don’t get me started on Sen Orrin Hatch, either. Completely off topic, but:

A number of years ago I was flying Delta from Atlanta to Washington, D.C. Our flight was seriously delayed in boarding and the counter agent was having a difficult time in calming down a man who was giving her grief about the delay. As I listened in, I heard this person say, “The Senator has to get to Washington for some very important votes”, and used the dreaded words “Don’t you know who Senator Hatch is?”.

As I have a deep appreciation for those who try to get us from point A to point B, and a deep loathing for self-important politicians and their entourages, I politely interrupted the discourse and asked the Delta employee why we were delayed for so long. She informed me that the main cabin door was showing not being sealed correctly, and that maintenance was checking it out.

I turned to Hatch’s aide and told him, “I don’t know about you, but the reason I fly Delta is NOT for cabin depressurization at 30,000 ft, so just go back to your Senator and tell him to cool his heels like the rest of us and leave this lady alone”.

Needless to say, there was no further hassle from the Senator and his aide.

The problem with Obama is that he keeps trying to extend his hand and be nice. Bush had far less power and support and still got EVERYTHING he wanted done. Obama needs to say the hell with it and do what he wants. He got health care and financial reform through without repubs. Well, screw them and keep going. They aren’t going to support anything he does out of principle, anger, and hatred that flows from them especially when they are out of power.

And don’t forget about the turncoats like Sestack, Liberman, and Blanche Lincoln and don’t support them.

Problem solved

Saul – Yeah…because Bush and the right were SO good to them!

I would say yes he was, but that wouldn’t give him credit for continued support of the military since he left office.

It’s so much nicer working for a man who deplores your very existance.

Jay, the Bush Admin was ethical? Wha? I don’t know about everything else, but the Iraq War thing seems to be one big ole lie. Powell believed much of it was BS, Col. Wilkerson was amazed anyone bought the UN speech Powell gave, Cheney said there were WMD’s in Iraq, the whisper campaign that Iraqi agents met al Quada, the illegal immigration blindness for the benefit of agri-biz donors, etc, etc, etc. I simply don’t see the W Admin as ethical.

And how many times was he impeached? I’d think Nixon would have something to say on the subject.

Seriously, on this “Senategate” thing I don’t think it has any legs. My only point was that if a Republican was in the White House, the MSM would be running with this for all it was worth. That’s the hypocrisy !

Your right……why would we expect democrats ( or most politicians) to obey and be held accountable to law at this point. If Obama DID break the law, how many of you that would support him would want him held accountable and dealt with…..How many would just laugh it off………..Sad that this guy was an Admiral ( Sestack) in our Navy and has lived by a code of honor his entire life. It will be interesting to see how many flea’s he has after laying with dogs?

JKL2… okay…show me ONE thing in “writing” where Obama has ever stated that he “deplores” the existence of our men and women in uniform. I mean… he was never a member of the military, but he was certainly NO Dick Cheney or Bush for that matter.

Sad that you can not see how by sending our troops into battle in Iraq… to be killed, or permanently injured for life…that you do NOT see how that act was an “abuse” of them.

Saul- but he was certainly NO Dick Cheney or Bush for that matter.

The American apology tour has done nothing but make us a laughing stock of the countries that are trying to do us harm. Just wait until Iraq becomes the new Saigon when we pull out. Are you going to send the military back in, getting Soldiers killed, to clean up the mess or are you just going to let thousands die for helping us?

Chicago is asking to mobilize the National Guard to help protect its streets. I think you’ll find it’s currently more dangerous than Iraq.

JKL2, ss you probably recall his comrades in the Tweedledee Party – Pelosi, Reid, Clinton, Obama et al “took impeachment off the table” after the neo-cons got decimated in historic fashion in 2006.

Does his lack of support for the wounded when they came back from his wars mean anything to you? Does his lack of supplying the troops with the equipment they needed or for that matter enough troops to do the job the first time mean anything?

I’m sorry but the rah-rah stuff just isn’t enough for someone who is the President and sends people to war.

18 USC 600, 595, 211 – three felonies. I suppose people lie all the time about “sex” too under oath so its OK to lie in court – if and only if your a Democrat. Sestak brought this up because it is and was an outrage.

Tired of one law for Democrats, another law for everyone else.

Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth – act and speak with integrity – or go to prison when you get caught playing fast and loose with the law.

I will agree somewhat on that. Hard to impeach someone for something you voted for. I guess Clinton was lying when he said,

“Earlier today, I ordered America’s armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq’s nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors.”

They loved it when Clinton said it, they loved it w/Bush after 9/11, they have no recollection of any of that ever happening today under Obama. Time to “drain the swamp” and we can start with Pelosi.
