Thirty-six days after the Deepwater Horizon exploded, killing 11 crew members and setting off a massive oil leak, BP may finally be ready to attempt to seal the drill site with a “top kill” of heavy mud followed by cement.
I’ve seen estimates of success at 60 to 70 percent, so keep your fingers crossed.
All of them. It’s a critical moment, the last best chance to stop the flow for weeks if not months. If this doesn’t work…
Here’s how BP describes the process:
“A total of 50,000 barrels of mud will be on location to kill the well – far more than necessary, but we want to be prepared for anything. Pumping capacity on location is more than 30,000 hydraulic horsepower.
The mud will be pumped down the 6-5/8 inch drill pipe (pipe is connected to the Q4000), then through 3-inch hoses, which go through the manifold on the seafloor. Then the mud moves through another set of 3-inch hoses attached to the Deepwater Horizon BOP choke and kill lines.
With the manifold, we can also pump the ‘junk shot’ if necessary to stop too much of the kill mud going out through the top of the BOP rather than going down into the well to stop the flow. By switching valves in the subsea manifold, we can inject the ‘bridging material’ (the junk), which will prevent such losses and enable the top kill to continue.
We’ve been testing the junk shot on-shore, looking at different configurations of what might restrict the flow out of the Deepwater Horizon riser and what types of materials would help shut it off. Materials in a junk shot can include well-known items such as pieces of tires, golf balls, and pieces of rope.”
After initialing declaring that public access to the video feed would be halted during the operation, BP relented last night and announced the feed would continue. It warned:
“Throughout the extended top kill procedure – which may take up to two days to complete – very significant changes in the appearance of the flows at the seabed may be expected. These will not provide a reliable indicator of the overall progress, or success or failure, of the top kill operation as a whole. BP will report on the progress of the operation as appropriate and on its outcome when complete.”
BP had suggested the operation could begin as early as dawn today, but as of 7:30 a.m., there is no indication from the video that operations had actually begun.
On Thursday, Interior Department officials are expected to deliver the results of a 30-day review of the offshore drilling program to President Obama, including recommendations for how tighten oversight. The next day, Obama is scheduled to visit the Gulf.
Congress has also been investigating, as The New York Times reports:
In the hours before the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded last month in the Gulf of Mexico, there were strong warning signs that something was terribly wrong with the well, according to a Congressional committee that was briefed on the accident by executives from BP.
Among the red flags, the panel said, were several equipment readings suggesting that gas was bubbling into the well, a potential sign of an impending blowout. Investigators also noted “other events in the 24 hours before the explosion that require further inquiry,” including a critical decision to replace heavy mud in the pipe rising from the seabed with seawater, possibly increasing the risk of an explosion.
…. Some of those who survived the explosion, including managers from BP and Transocean, are expected to testify at hearings in Louisiana to be held by the Coast Guard and the federal Minerals Management Service, beginning Wednesday.
The testimony may help clear up some of the uncertainties about the day of the accident, including who was making the decisions. But the new information from BP — combined with past testimony by executives, analysis of documents by The New York Times and interviews with independent drilling experts — is beginning to paint a picture of a complex operation that went awry just as it was drawing to a close.
Drilling logs from the Deepwater Horizon suggest that shortly after midnight on the morning of the explosion, attention had turned to temporarily plugging and capping the well so the rig could disconnect and move to another job. Halliburton, the contractor hired by BP to provide cementing services, had spent the past several weeks cementing each new segment of the well into place. Halliburton was also responsible for plugging it….
However, in testimony before Congressional hearings, Halliburton executives have said that the company adhered strictly to the specifications provided by BP for the cementing of the well.”
The only break we’ve seemed to get in this whole tragedy has been with the weather. NOAA predicts that it will continue to be calm, for the most part keeping the oil offshore, although portions of the Louisiana coast have already been hammered. Bad as it is, the only solace is that it could be much much worse.
Like I said, keep your fingers crossed, and pray.

But see, here’s the thing. You set up a rig to go somewhere in the ocean so deep we can’t even send a manned craft to inspect it. You go drill several miles deeper to bring out massive amounts of rotting, toxic crap Mother Nature, in her wisdom, doesn’t generally loose upon her subjects but in bits and pieces here and there.
If you do all this, it’d probably be a good idea to have backups to the backups to the backup plan to account for everything going kablooie before of the decaying toxic crap every gets out of its miles-deep hold, before you drill baby drill.
Just saying.

As long as the well pressure is dropping and they are not simply getting a false indicator of reduced pressure via reduced pipe outlet pressure due to a partially clogged pipe, then sure, it has a chance at working. I mean, anyone that knows their fluid mechanics will tell you that. After all, this isn’t rocket science. Even those Republicans, with their limited educations, that are doing all the whining about Obama not doing something more should know that. Then again, perhaps a little pictorial showing them where to insert said pipe along with an arrow showing circular motion afterward would help them to understand.

So there, I done my bragging and I’m thru with it.
Anyhow, what BP needs to stop this leak is some good old GA clay. That stuff will stop anything. If you cut a artery just slap some GA clay on it and the bleeding will stop. Heck, the stuff’s so good it won’t even come out of clothes no matter how many times you wash them. Just put a big blob of GA clay on the end of a line and lower it to the ocean bottom and that leak will be as gone as Obama in November 2012.

I agree, but in their defense, people on here that have never lived in a hurricane zone are clueless. People choose to stay for many reasons, one of which is the fact that they suffered no adverse conditions in prior hurricanes, so they dropped their guard. (Been there, done that)
But, it was a conscious choice to stay.
And for those that put the blame on the last in line in regards to agreed upon responsibility, they are only fooling themselves.

Lesson learned: Private enterprise does not always do it better and there is a role for government regulations, including environmental protection. There are some things we should not allow to be done until we have real methods to address the potential disasters and there should be no liability caps. Oh, and having Dick Cheney meet behind closed doors with oil executives to create an energy plan has real consequences….

Plenty, and if you’ll note in Karl Rove’s book (backed up with memos and logs) they warned Louisiana and New Orleans days before Katrina and recommended evacuation days before. Their recommendations were ignored.
As to this current disaster, do you think every oil boom in the nation is in use right now? Do you think dispersal chemicals could have been used earlier and more frequently? More burns, perhaps?
Why do you find it so incomprehensible to admit that this administration, given their proclivity for inserting their noses in virtually everything they have no business doing so, is so hesitant to do so for this natural disaster.

Hospitals are required to have a Disaster Recovery Plan (often called a Business Continuity Plan). Banks are required to have them also….and the government requires that they be tested every year. I understand that every oil platform must have such a plan on file with the Feds. Why then did BP have to “manufacture” that “dome”? Why wasn’t it already sitting there waiting to be used? Was their plan reviewed and tested (to the degree that it could be tested)? It seems they are really just winging it.

“and, as anyone knows who sat and watched the news for the weekend leading up to the Monday landfall, the NWS predicted EVERYthing that was going to happen – and they were right on the money.”
And my point – having lived through several – is that they are “predictions”. Folks that live there (including those in gov’t) have a tendency to be skeptical. It is the cry wolf syndrome. Pack it up, leave for several days, then come back to minimal damage, folks tend to ignore the warnings. Predictions that were more often wrong than right. So just because that got that “one” right means very little to folks that go through 5-10 a year. It still boils down to the inhabitants – they leave, problem doesn’t exist.

Famous oil. rig. fire. fighter? Jesus, they’ll make a celebrity out of anyone.
Red Adair deserved all the fame he acquired. The guy was simply fearless, not to mention amazingly effective. It says a lot about him that when Saddam left Kuwaiti oil wells burning out of control and nobody could get within 100 yards of one, the first person that the U.S. government called was Red Adair.

He wasn’t a big fan of OSHA either. There’s a story in there about some inspector insisting his men use modern, plastic hard helmets instead of the metal ones they were using. Red told the guy to follow him, and started walking towards a burning well. When the plastic helmet started to MELT around the guy’s ears…end of requirement to use plastic helmets!

Lawd-ah-mercy!
On Apr. 30, the Huffington Post published a story stating:
In what is looming as another public relations predicament for Goldman Sachs, the banking giant admitted today that it made “a substantial financial bet against the Gulf of Mexico” one day before the sinking of an oil rig in that body of water.
The new revelations came to light after government investigators turned up new emails from Goldman employee Fabrice “Fabulous Fab” Tourre in which he bragged to a girlfriend that the firm was taking a “big short” position on the Gulf.
“One oil rig goes down and we’re going to be rolling in dough,” Mr. Tourre wrote in one email. “Suck it, fishies and birdies!”
Try to remember, Huff’nPuffers…Andy Borowitz is a comedian! The stuff he writes is satire!
Not being aware that the author, Andy Borowitz, is a comedian, scores of Internet sites ran with the story as being genuine. As of today, Google search on Goldman Sachs shorted “Gulf of Mexico” pulls up 207,000 returns, beginning with the Huffington Post link. Many, such as Infowars, pulled their stories when they realized the mistake.
Huffington has scrubbed all the comments to protect their gullible.
Remember…ANDY BOROWITZ IS A COMEDIAN! Always look for the byline, ANDY BOROWITZ.

And Obama isn’t doing anything because he has no idea what to do. “Plug the damn hole” is a great sound bite, but is worthless coming from an armchair deepwater scientist. Worthless. The government doesn’t have the expertise to deal with this and they need to stop bashing BP for sound bites and figure out how they CAN help in areas they do have some expertise.

I guess we really would not be having this situation had the politicians, mostly Democrat, and the environmental whackos not removed drilling on land, such as ANWAR, where had such a spill occured, it could have been repaired much easier, much more quickly, and considerably less messier than we see now.
But, with this deep water accident, yet another chapter is written on the incompetent sap we have as an alleged president, a fool who has done virtually nothing publicly or privately, showing that he has absolutely no grasp whatsoever on what is occurring.
The very environmentalists who shoved the drilling offshore to protect their precious little marshlands and associated flora and fauna hold a degree of responsibility as well.
Obama’s fault, as some mushroom head suggested? No, not really.
Reaction, action, repair or control to the disaster being measured in near geological time Obama’s fault? Yes, totally. The ensuing massive ecological disaster being spread while Nero fiddles also Obama’s fault? Absolutely.

So, the DOJ is preparing to sue AZ for it’s immigration law. Holder says “”The regulation of our borders and the immigration that occurs by crossing our borders is something that is inherently something I believe for the national government to take responsibility for.”
Then do it! Unbelievable. The only reason AZ had to create the law is because the govt has not taken responsibility for it. Sounds like Bosch is in charge of the DOJ with logic like that.

No matter who replaced Dumb and Dumber, with their bookend disasters, the nation was going to let out an enormous, collective sigh of relief. We survived the Reign of Error. I personally reprised Gerald Ford’s famous quote, “Our long national nightmare is over.”

The Repubs in Congress are beginning to show their inner feelings. After their meeting President Obama, they essentially said “he should not come to meetings with the grown-ups and men and women of superior intelligence and moral certitude.”
They did not have any other way of calling him “boy”, so it was decided that he did not belong in the same meeting with those ladies and gentlemen assembled for the President’s called meeting.
The President stated that he wanted to have bi-partisan, candid discussions with Congress to address problems relating to the citizens of this country. The Repubs used this meeting as a backhanded method to assail the President’s character and expose their own racist proclivities.

Awww …just another day at the blogging booth…
I liked President Bush. He did what he thought was best for the country no matter who liked it. a man of good character.
President Obama is not my favorite president. But he is not an oil disaster expert and I do not expect him to be. As far as I can see, the government is doing its part in working with BP. the admiral of the Coast Guard is an ideal spokesman. A stable “iron” man if ever I saw one.
Sooo…
President Bush is in no way responsible for Katrina. He doesn’t generate hurricanes. He followed the law on giving help. There are always things that can be done better.
President Obama is in no way responsible for a leaking oil well under the sea. He did not cause it. He is following protocol with the Coast Guard and whomever is assigned to such catastrophes.
BP is also doing all it can to stop the leak. Neither the government or BP can make a profit, save all lives, or have complete knowledge of such disasters. The experts are working on it. Armchair experts always say that “something could be done better”.
Forget it! For once, I agree with Bookman. Keep your fingers crossed and pray. That is the SENSIBLE thing to do., ’specially for those out there doing the dirty and dangerous work on this problem. Don’t forget them or the fishermen who are losing their income and their environment.. So many suffer!! Let us not aggrevate this tragedy with petty bickering.

The drill head will produce more heavy mud so the leak will backlash a portion of the dynamic pressure in order to stagnate the flow of seawater. In physics, this is known as a random, predeterministic predipation. There will be a fix to stop the highly pressurized black gold and BP will profit from it by offering it to other oil rig companies and Obama will take his share as ‘well’. There will be slight changes to the coastal areas in the coming months but nothing major. The fix is already cemented and we will see the oil pretty much disappear from the ocean. The heavy mud is good stuff as I have seen it – same stuff Bookman uses for his regular facials at the AJC Gym/Spa. Questions?
